This User Manual will assist you in the orre t installation and operation of the VM1 Vortex Mixer, as well as explain the safety requirements for its
use.
Important: Please read the contents of this User Manual efore unpacking and operating the product.
Unpacking and Checking
On e you have read these instru tions in full and understand the installation and safety requirements in luding those for unpa king the arton, please
arefully open the pa king and slowly remove the produ t. Carefully inspe t the ondition of the produ t to ensure it has not been damaged in
transit. Any damage should be reported immediately to the responsible arrier. If the produ t is damaged in any way, re-pa k the produ t into the
supplied pa kaging and notify the responsible arrier immediately.
Important: Do not operate the equipment if it has een damaged in any way. Any failures resulting through the use of a damaged product
will not e covered y the product warranty.

Intended Use
This Vortex Mixer is intended for the purpose of agitating vessels ontaining liquid to reate a vortex inside the vessel. The operator may load a
suitable arti le into the sili on rubber up for the purpose of ontrolled agitation of the arti le.
The Vortex Mixer is not intended to provide dire t- onta t between itself and an unprote ted medi al, food, biologi al or medi o- te hno item. In all
ases the item should be en losed in a suitable vessel as des ribed below.
Suita le Articles For Use With This Vortex Mixer
•Plasti or glass laboratory test tubes that are sealed and rated to withstand the intended velo ity of agitation.
•Plasti or glass laboratory sample vials, syringes or bottles that are sealed and rated to withstand the intended velo ity of agitation.
•
An example of a suitable arti le would be a sealed plasti laboratory entrifuge tube filled with water and oil.
Unsuita le Articles For Use With This Vortex Mixer
•Any item where the arti le is not sealed or during mixing may result in its ontents oming into onta t with the Vortex Mixer or the
Operator.
•Items weighing more than 500 grams.
•
An example of an unsuitable arti le would be an open ended test tube filled with blood. The tube should be sealed with a suitable ap
or stopper.
Suita le Environments For The Vortex Mixer
The Vortex Mixer is intended for use in a lean laboratory environment only where adequate ventilation, a good power supply and provisions
for routine leaning are available. The Vortex Mixer should not be used outdoors or in dirty, dusty, humid or windy environments. The
a eptable operating onditions are outlined further in this User Manual.
General Operation
•The Vortex Mixer is plugged into an appropriate power sour e. It is powered by an alternating urrent power supply with prote tive
earth and with the appropriate re epta le, rated voltage and frequen y for the ountry of its intended use. Further details on power
requirements are outlined in this User Manual.
•A suitable arti le (as defined above) is pla ed into the sili on up and held in pla e by the Operator or a laboratory retort lamp and
stand.
•The Vortex Mixer is operated via a front panel interfa e onsisting of an operating mode swit h and a mixing speed ontrol knob.
These ontrols allow the operator to set a required operating mode and agitation speed.
•The Vortex Mixer should be operated stri tly in a ordan e with the Operating Pro edures outlined further in this User Manual.
Operator Responsi ility – Safety Considerations
When operated in stri t a ordan e with this User Manual, plus routine leaning and maintenan e being arried out, the produ t shall provide safe
operation for the operator. The operator should be aware of the following before installing and operating the produ t :
Conditions of Operation
*Note: The term “Operator” referred to in this User Manual is the primary person who has been tasked to install, maintain and train in
the usage of this equipment. Other personnel shall be referred to as “Users”.
•The operator shall be aware that the prote tion provided by the equipment may be impaired if the equipment is used with a essories
not provided or re ommended by the manufa turer, is modified in any way or is used in a manner not spe ified by the manufa turer.
•The operator is responsible for ensuring all users of the produ t are qualified to do so, and are well versed in ommon safety
on epts. The produ t should only be operated by an adult who has read and understood this User Manual provided in the appropriate
language in its entirety.
•Any user must be informed by the responsible operator of any potential hazards that may arise through the use of this equipment in
the ourse of their work, in luding any lo al environmental hazards not related dire tly to the Vortex Mixer. They should also be able
to demonstrate that they understand any preventative safety measures in operation prior to operating the equipment.
•The operator shall agree to a ept responsibility for the use of the equipment in a ordan e with this User Manual, and be fully aware
that the equipment is designed for ommer ial use.
•It is assumed that the user and operator have had experien e in a ommer ial environment, and had appropriate training in how to
perform their work safely in a ordan e with any lo al operational health and safety regulations. The operator and all users should be
well versed in lo al emergen y pro edures as per the workpla e safety regulations in effe t.

•Avoid any dire t impa t with any surfa e of the equipment, in luding the asing, mixing up and most importantly the ontrol panel.
•Important: Do not use any sharp or pointed metal obje ts anywhere near the equipment, in parti ular the ontrol panel and
underneath the mixing up.
•Avoid using the equipment near any other vibrating equipment or sour e of ex essive vibration.
•Ensure the equipment is leaned and maintained in a ordan e with this User Manual.
•Ensure that all original safety warning labels are in an adequate, legible ondition and are firmly affixed to the equipment before using
the produ t.
•Plug the equipment dire tly into a wall power outlet. Do not plug the equipment into a multi-so ket adapter of any kind.
•The equipment is intended for operation in a ontrolled ele tromagneti environment. Avoid the use of transmitting devi es (e.g.
ellular or mobile telephones) near the equipment whilst operating. A minimum distan e of 2 Metres from the produ t is
re ommended for any transmitting devi e.
•The equipment must only be installed and operated in well ventilated areas. The unit is not intended for use in explosive atmospheres
or in onfined spa es.
•The allowed operating environment must be between 5° Celsius and 40° Celsius ambient air temperature.
•The maximum allowed relative humidity of the operating environment is 80%.
•The equipment should not be stored in dire t sunlight, near hemi als, or other ontaminants.
•If any of these safety re ommendations annot be a hieved or the equipment has been damaged in any way, the equipment should not
be installed or operated.
•Important : If you have any on erns or questions relating to operator or user safety, please onta t the appropriate Ratek Servi e
department before installing and operating the unit. Conta t details are provided in this User Manual.
Safety La els And Markings
The equipment is provided with safety aution labels. An explanation of ea h aution label is provided below. It is the responsibility of the
operator and user to fully understand the meaning of these warning labels prior to operating the equipment.
Very Important: At all times the silicon ru er mixing cup MUST REMAIN FITTED to the Vortex Mixer whilst in operation to avoid possi le
damage to glass and plastic vessels and to avoid injury.

The Vortex Mixer is powered by an alternating urrent power supply suffi ient to ause
harm if onta t with the ele tri al supply is made. Under no ir umstan es should any
part of the equipment be opened, un-s rewed, loosened or disassembled whilst power is
applied to the unit. Only authorized servi e agents are permitted to remove overs.
This label is fitted by the manufa turer and must not be removed under any
ir umstan es.

Operating Procedures
You must take the time to familiarize yourself ompletely with the following operating pro edures before installing or operating the Vortex Mixer in
order to a hieve the best performan e and maximum attainable user safety.
Identification of Controls & Functions
Throughout this User Manual, the numeri al element representing a ontrol or omponent of the Vortex Mixer will be used to identify it. The figure
below indi ates all key ontrols and omponents of the Vortex Mixer with their orresponding numeri al element labeled.

Throughout this User Manual, spe ifi warnings will be supplied whi h relate to the urrent operation being referred to. These warnings are supplied
in addition to the main warning labels affixed to the produ t and the key points outlined in the se tion of this User Manual titled ‘Operator
Responsibility – Safety Considerations’.

Safety Recommendations
The following safety re ommendations must be followed to prevent damage or injury. In addition to these safety re ommendations, it is assumed that
the user and operator have had experien e in a ommer ial environment, and had appropriate training in how to perform their work safely in
a ordan e with any lo al operational health and safety regulations. The operator and all users should be well versed in lo al emergen y pro edures
as per the workpla e safety regulations in effe t.
CAUTION
If the equipment is used in a manner not spe ified by the manufa turer, the prote tion provided by the equipment may be
impaired.
CAUTION
The equipment must only be used with a prote tive earth power so ket. The earth onta t provides prote tion to the user and
the equipment. If you do not have a prote tive earth power so ket, or you are unsure as to whether you have a prote tive
earth power so ket, do not onne t the equipment. In su h ases you should onsult your workpla e administrator or
ele tri al maintenan e staff to determine if a prote tive earth power so ket is available.
A surge protected power outlet is strongly recommended as it provides some protection for the equipment in areas of
poor electrical quality as well as providing some protection against lightning strikes. The equipment should e
operated on a good, relia le supply of power at all times.
Note: The Vortex Mixer should not be operated on the same ele tri al ir uit as other high voltage household applian es su h
as fridges, lothes dryers, washing ma hines or other ontinuous operation high voltage devi es. These types of devi es an
reate power flu tuations that are undesirable for ele tri ally sensitive equipment. Consult your workpla e administrator or
ele tri al maintenan e staff if you are unsure.
-ALWAYS wear prote tive eyewear when working with the equipment.
-ALWAYS pla e the Vortex Mixer on a strong, even, dry, flat, smooth surfa e to allow the rubber su tion feet to hold the
mixer se urely.
-ALWAYS turn off power before moving the equipment to a new lo ation.
-ALWAYS turn off the mains power supply at the outlet when the unit is not in operation.
-ALWAYS be areful of water or other liquids near the working area and ensure any spills annot ome in onta t with
the Vortex Mixer ontrol panel or mains power lead. Ensure ben hes are kept dry at all times.
-ALWAYS operate the Vortex Mixer in a well ventilated area with adequate learan e around the Vortex Mixer as
indi ated in ase of spillage.
-ALWAYS use only the original mains power lead. Repla ement non-genuine leads may not be suitable.
-ALWAYS ensure the equipment is included in your electrical test and tag register.
-NEVER operate the equipment if the electrical test tag is out of date.
-NEVER operate the equipment if you believe it is damaged in any way.
-NEVER operate the Vortex Mixer if the mains power supply able is damaged in any way

Preparation & Installation
The Vortex Mixer should be installed and operated in stri t a ordan e with the following instru tions.
CAUTION
Be areful when lifting and observe your lo al operational health and safety requirements for lifting before unpa king the arton.
Unpacking and Installing
-Carefully remove all pa kaging material from the Vortex Mixer, as well as the User Manual and any other supplied
a essories.
-Carefully inspe t the Vortex Mixer, mains power lead and all pa kaging for any signs of damage. If any signs of damage are
present, do not install or operate the equipment. Conta t the supplier of your equipment if you have a re eived a damaged
produ t.
-Pla e the Vortex Mixer in an upright position as per Figure 1 on a strong, even, flat, smooth surfa e and push the unit firmly
down until all 4 su tion feet are se urely held to the surfa e. Failing to se ure the mixer will allow it to move during
operation.
-Ensure that there is a minimum unobstru ted distan e of 100 millimetres between the left, right and rear panels of the
Vortex Mixer and any other obje t or wall.
-Ensure that there is a suitable mains power supply outlet within rea h of the supplied mains power lead without pla ing any
strain whatsoever on the lead or plug. The Vortex Mixer should not be plugged into any double-adapter, power board, or
power point splitter of any kind but instead dire tly into a orre tly earthed wall mounted power so ket.
-Ensure that there is a minimum unobstru ted distan e of 500 millimetres in front of the Vortex Mixer to allow adequate
room for the user to maintain a safe operating distan e of 300 millimetres.
CAUTION
The Vortex Mixer is designed for the purpose of agitating vessels ontaining liquid to reate a vortex inside the vessel.
The ontents of these vessels is the sole responsibility of the user or operator, and the use of orrosive, flammable,
ombustible, hazardous, environmentally unsafe or otherwise dangerous materials within the ontainer is done so at the risk
and liability of the user or operator.
ALWAYS be 100% sure of the ontents of your ontainers, the expe ted behavior on e agitated and the appli able safety
measures that should be employed when handling su h substan es.
ALWAYS ensure your ontainers are firmly sealed and there is no han e of the sample leaking onto the Vortex Mixer or
oming into onta t with the Operator.

Using The Vortex Mixer
Choosing a Suita le Vessel
-The Vortex Mixer should be used with slightly tapered vessels or parallel sided tubes for best results. Centrifuge tubes with
a tapered point are ideal and will lo ate neatly into the sili on mixing up. Other flat bottom vessels an be used however
the resulting mixing a tion will not be as vigorous. The vessel should lo ate inside the sili on mixing up.
-If the vessel does not lo ate inside the sili on mixing up, it is too large for use with the mixer and should not be used.
-All vessels must be overed or sealed with an appropriate ap to prevent spillage during mixing.
Connecting Power
CAUTION
The equipment must only be used with a prote tive earth power so ket. The earth onta t provides prote tion to the user and
the equipment. If you do not have a prote tive earth power so ket, or you are unsure as to whether you have a prote tive
earth power so ket, do not onne t the equipment. In su h ases you should onsult your workpla e administrator or ele tri al
maintenan e staff to determine if a prote tive earth power so ket is available.
The mains power supply must be rated to mat h the power requirement as identified on the produ t identifi ation label on the
bottom left orner of the rear panel. This is normally expressed in the format of Voltage Range and Frequen y.
A surge protected power outlet is strongly recommended as it provides some protection for the equipment in areas of
poor electrical quality as well as providing some protection against lightning strikes. The equipment should e
operated on a good, relia le supply of power at all times.

IMPORTANT : Use of an incorrect power supply will void the product warranty and waive all manufacturer lia ility for
any and all damage caused y such use. If you are unsure a out the rating of your power supply, consult your
workplace administrator or electrical maintenance staff to determine if your power supply is suita le for use with this
product efore connecting the power lead.
CAUTION
Regularly he k the mains power lead ondition over the life of the produ t, and do not operate the equipment if you suspe t
there is damage to any part of the equipment or the mains power lead.
-Insert the plug end of the mains power supply lead firmly into a properly rated, prote tive earthed wall mounted power
supply outlet.
If there are double-adapters or oversized DC power pa ks ausing obstru tion of the mains power lead plug, these should first
be removed.
-Ensuring your hands are dry, swit h on the power on the mains power supply outlet.
Changing Operating Modes
The Vortex Mixer features 2 operating modes as well as an adjustable mixing speed ontrol.
The “Off/Auto” mode allows the operator to leave the mixer in a “ready to mix” state. The mixer will operate when pressure is
applied to the sili on mixing up.
The “On” mode provides ontinuous mixing regardless of whether pressure is applied to the sili on mixing up.
To change the operating mode
-Push the operating mode swit h (element 2 in Figure 1) to the required setting.
-If “On” is sele ted the mixer will begin to mix and the speed an be adjusted.
-If “Off/Auto” is sele ted the mixer requires downward pressure on the sili on mixing up to begin mixing.

Adjusting The Mixing Control
The Vortex Mixer features adjustable mixing speed ontrol to deliver gentle agitation through to vigorous mixing whereby a
vortex forms within the vessel.
To change the mixing speed
-Slowly turn the agitation speed ontrol knob (element 3 in Figure 1) lo kwise to in rease the speed, or anti- lo kwise to
de rease the speed.
-The speed may be adjusted during mixing to a hieve the desired level of mixing inside the vessel.
Note: The mixing action can e altered y changing the angle at which the vessel is held.
Operating the Vortex Mixer
CAUTION
When working with glass tubes, flasks, bottles, breakable or other brittle or fragile arti les it is important to wear appropriate
safety eyewear and prote tive gloves to ensure operator safety. In addition, the Vortex Mixer should be used in a ordan e
with your operational health and safety poli ies.
-Sele t the required operating mode. Refer to the se tion in this User Manual titled “Changing Operating Modes” for
instru tions.
-Sele t the desired agitation speed. Refer to the se tion in this User Manual titled “Adjusting The Mixing Speed” for
instru tions.
-If operating in the ontinuous “On” mode, the mixer will already be operating.
-If operating in “Off/Auto” mode, the mixer will only operate on e gentle pressure is applied via your vessel to the sili on
mixing up.
-Pla e your thumb over the end of the vessel to ensure a se ure grip.
-Insert the bottom of the vessel into the sili on mixing up and apply gentle downward pressure.
-The speed may be adjusted as desired.
-Remove the vessel on e mixing is omplete.
-If the mixer is no longer being used, swit h the operating ontrol knob to “Off/Auto” (element 2 in Figure 1)
Note: To a hieve a full vortex inside the vessel, the mixer should be operated near maximum speed. There is no issue with
running the mixer for long periods at maximum speed.
Storing & Relocating The Vortex Mixer
The Vortex Mixer should be stored out of dire t sunlight at an ambient temperature below 30° Celsius in a lean and dry
lo ation whi h meets the environmental onditions required as detailed in the te hni al spe ifi ations of this User Manual.
-Swit h the operating ontrol knob to “Off/Auto” (element 2 in Figure 1)
-Unplug the equipment from the mains power supply outlet.
-Ensure the Vortex Mixer is lean and dry. If required, lean it a ording to the se tion of this User Manual titled “Routine
Cleaning & Maintenan e”.
-Relo ate it to an appropriate storage lo ation. Ensure the Vortex Mixer is stored in a lean and dry lo ation away from
potential damage by a idental kno ks and bumps.

Routine Cleaning And Maintenance
To maintain the Vortex Mixer in good, safe working order and ensure maximum produ t lifespan, regular leaning and general maintenan e is
required. The Vortex Mixer should be leaned at least on e every month for a unit being used on a daily basis, for infrequently used Vortex Mixers a
leaning frequen y of on e every 3 months is re ommended. On ea h o asion, the general maintenan e routine should be employed following
leaning.
Cleaning The Vortex Mixer
CAUTION
Do not use al ohol based leaners or solvents on the Vortex Mixer as these may break down ertain omponents of it’s
onstru tion, redu ing it’s life and potentially reating a hazardous situation. Use only a mild household detergent when leaning
the Vortex Mixer.
CAUTION
If the Vortex Mixer has been used with any dangerous, hemi al or biologi al substan es it should be de ontaminated prior to
leaning. De ontaminate the Vortex Mixer using a de ontamination pro edure appropriate to the ontaminant, however in all
ases ensure the following :
-No de ontamination or leaning agents are used whi h ould ause a hazardous situation to arise as a result of a
rea tion with parts of the Vortex Mixer or with any materials ontained in it. For example, substan es that may
ompromise the integrity or fun tion of ele tri al insulation, ele tri al omponents or other omponents.
-Ratek are onsulted prior to de ontamination or leaning being undertaken if there is any doubt about the ompatibility
of de ontamination or leaning agents with parts of the Vortex Mixer or with any materials ontained in it.
CAUTION
When leaning the unit, only use a damp sponge. Do not use a sodden wet sponge. Do not make any part of the ontrol panel,
any exposed ontrol or re epta le or any part of the Vortex Mixer ex essively wet. If these re epta les and ontrols remain wet
on e ele tri al power is restored they an reate a hazardous situation suffi ient to ause serious injury or risk to life due to
ele tri al sho k. Always ensure the unit and in parti ular all ontrols and re epta les are ompletely dry before restoring

Maintenance

If at any stage you experien e abnormal operation (anything other than that des ribed in this Operating Manual) this may indi ate a fault ondition. If
the Vortex Mixer fails to operate, this may also indi ate a fault ondition.
Fault onditions must be referred to an authorized servi e te hni ian immediately and the equipment should be unplugged from the mains power

Warranty Conditions
This Ratek produ t is overed by a 3 year parts and 12 months labour return-to-base warranty effe tive from the date of pur hase. The produ t
is manufa tured in Melbourne, Australia.
The warranty is offered by Ratek Instruments Pty. Ltd. lo ated at 60 Wadhurst Drive, Boronia, Vi toria, Australia 3155, phone number +613
9887 2161.
•This warranty overs the repair or repla ement of any parts or omponents found to be defe tive, subje t to the servi e options listed
below.
•The warranty is a return-to-base warranty, meaning the produ t must be returned to Ratek Instruments or an authorised Ratek agent
for servi e at the dis retion of Ratek Instruments. Where pra ti al an on-site repair may be arried out at the dis retion of Ratek
Instruments.
•This warranty ex ludes any defe t resulting from misuse, negle t, a idental damage, improper voltage, operation of the produ t outside
the a eptable operating onditions as indi ated in these operating instru tions or any alteration whi h affe ts the performan e of the
equipment.
•It does not extend to any osts asso iated with delivery of the produ t to or from Ratek Instruments or an authorised Ratek agent,
damage, or loss in urred during transport.
•This warranty is in addition to any Statutory regulations and provisions implied by the Trade Pra ti es A t and any relevant State or
Federal Government obligations, appli able only when pur hased within Australia.
•The produ t may be repla ed within the warranty period at the dis retion of Ratek Instruments, however repair will be the normal
ourse of a tion.
•For a period of 3 years from date of pur hase, repla ement parts will be supplied at no harge and the original omponents returned to
the repairer. These repla ement parts may be installed by an approved servi e agent with prior written agreement from Ratek
Instruments.
•For a period of 12 months from date of pur hase, servi e labour and repairs will be arried out at no harge by an approved repairer or
Ratek Instruments at the dis retion of Ratek Instruments.
•The limit of liability shall extend to the repair of the produ t only, all other ompensation laims are ex luded from this guarantee.
•The warranty does not extend to laims of suitability where the produ t does not deliver the intended fun tion or fails to operate.
•No laims of suitability are made in relation to the produ t by Ratek Instruments. Any laim of suitability lies with the operator.
•The produ t is used at the risk of the operator. Any loss or damage aused to any item used with the produ t in luding but not limited
to biologi al samples, tubes, ra ks, a essories, flasks, ontainers or the ontents of su h ontainers aused by the malfun tion of the
produ t or the failure of the produ t to fun tion is not overed by this warranty.
•Proof of pur hase is required for all warranty repairs.
DOA Product
Any laim under this warranty must be made within 7 days of the date of pur hase of the produ t. To make a laim under the Warranty,
you must present the produ t, together with proof of pur hase or issue, to the store where you pur hased the produ t from. If the
produ t is defe tive and does meet the Warranty, you will be provided with a repla ement produ t, or where that is not possible, a
refund. Ratek Instruments will pay your reasonable, dire t expenses of laiming under this Warranty. You may submit details and proof of
your expense laim to Ratek Instruments for onsideration.
This Warranty is provided in addition to other rights and remedies you have under law. Our goods ome with guarantees that annot be
ex luded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a repla ement or refund for a major failure and ompensation for any
reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or repla ed if the goods fail to be of a eptable
quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.

Return & Repair Procedures
The produ t is engineered from quality omponents designed to give long trouble-free operation. In the event that a te hni al problem
has o urred that requires servi ing by a Ratek Servi e agent, please follow these steps before returning the unit :
•Conta t the supplier from where the equipment was pur hased. If this is not possible, please onta t Ratek Instruments either via email
to servi e@ratek. om.au, or phone on +613 9887 2161 during business hours AEST. You may be referred to a lo al repair agent for
servi e.
•Clean the unit thoroughly in a ordan e with this Operating Manual. If ne essary, de ontaminate the unit to ensure safety for the
servi e te hni ians.
•Pa k the unit into it’s original pa kaging with the supplied mains power lead and use all original prote tive inserts. If the original
pa kaging is not available, the unit must be pa ked with extreme are to ensure a safe journey. “Fragile” and “This Way Up” labels should
be applied to the arton in a prominent lo ation. No liability for a unit damaged in transit will be a epted. Use only reputable arrier
servi es.
•Provide a full and omplete fault des ription and your return onta t details in the pa kage and return the produ t as advised by the
servi e representative.
