1. Ensure the electricityand water are turned onto theunit.
2. Press the start/ stop button “B”.
This will turntheshower on, the waterwillflow andthe
indicator lights willglow showing chosenPower Selection.
We recommended that youdonot enter the water spray
during this period, even iftheshower has just beenused.
3. Knob “A” controls the power selection.
Select “High”, “Med (medium)” or “Cold”
4. If the water is not at your desired showering temperature,
turn knob “C” asmall amount until youreachthe
desired showering temperature.
Turn clockwise (follow blue arrows) for cooler.
Turn anti-clockwise (follow redarrows) for warmer.

Onthe scale “1” is the coolest, whilst “9” is the hottest.
5. Whenyouhave finished showering, press the start/ stop button “B” again.
6. Water will continue to flow for up to 7 secondsbefore switching off.
This reduces the temperature ofthe water inthetank for thenext
user.
The indicator lights willgoout.
7. Wait for the water to stop, switchoffthe electricitysupply at the ceiling switchor local isolator.
Notes
•Wait20 seconds for thetemperature to stabilise after each adjustment.
•Theindicator lights illuminate when the heatersare on and, if the shower has been
recently used, they may take upto 20 secondsto come on
.
Duringthis time the water may go from very hot to coldbefore stabilising.
•Theposition of knob “C” will be approximately the same each time the shower is
used,varyingonly with incoming water temperature or pressure changes
(e.g. you will only need to change from summer to winter).
•Duringnormal operation, if an overheatedwater temperature is sensed then the
heater will switch off and the “Overheat” lightwill illuminate.
Water will continue to flow and cooldown before the heater switchesback on again.

INTRODUCTION
Thank youfor purchasing a quality Redring Expressions 500S Shower manufactured inEngland.
To enjoy your new shower atits best,please take time to readthismanualthoroughly to
familiarise yourself with all instructions, BEFORE beginning installation.
The Redring Expressions500S is anelectric shower incorporating our “Smart Technology” witha
“Set and Forget” functionof a push-buttonstart/stopfacilitywhichstarts the shower at a pre-set
power andflowrate reducing the amount of adjustmentrequired.
Yourshower is designed tostabilise temperature
changes caused by water pressure fluctuations.
These canresult fromtoilets beingflushed or taps being turned on and off.
Whenthis happens your showeringtemperature will be held withinacontrolled band, provided that
the minimum pressure required by the shower is maintained (see “Effect of Other Water Devices”).
1. Your shower has beendesigned for convenience, economy and safety of use, provided that it is
installed, used and maintained ingood working order and inaccordance withour instructionsand
recommendations.
2. Allwiring andinstallation must be supervisedby a suitably qualified person.
3. THISAPPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED.
4. The installationmust be inaccordance withthe current editionof BS.7671 (the“IEE Wiring
Regulations”) and “Part P” of the “Building Regulations” inforce at the time ofinstallation.
Installationsoutside England and Wales mustalsoconformto any local regulations ineffect.
This appliance is intended to be permanently connected tothe fixed electrical wiringofthe mains
supplywithits own dedicated supply.
5. This appliance must NOT be fitted where it may be subjected to freezing conditions
6. DO NOT switchthe appliance onif yoususpect it of being frozen.
Wait until youare sure it has thawed out.
7. DO NOT fitany sort of tap orcontrol onthe appliance outlet. The appliance is designed to have
anopenoutlet and should only be used with “Redring”recommended fittings.
8.
Theshower handset provided is designed to work withelectric showers.
Only use the manufacturers approvedaccessories with thisshower.
9. Takecare toavoid restricting the outlet ofthe pressure relief device. If water is discharged from
the pressure reliefdevice, maintenance will be required before the appliance canbe safely used.
10. Isolate the mains electricaland water supplybefore removingthe frontcover oftheappliance.

1. Water is heated instantaneously as it flowsover the
heating elements inthe copper cylinder (Diagram 8).
2. Theheaters are only switched onwhensufficient
water is flowing.
This is done automatically witha switchwhichworks
onwater pressure andis indicated by 2 or 3 lights
illuminating depending onknob“A” power selection.
3. Thewater is turned onand off by the solenoid valve
built intothe shower.
This is switched onwhen button “B” is pressed.
4. Theflowof water is automatically held at the levelset
by the user eventhoughthe supply pressure may
vary (see “Effect of Other Water Devices onIncoming
Water Supply”).
5. If the water supplyfalls below a set limit, the pressure
switchwill operate and switchoff thepower tothe
elements. This is indicated by the middle power indicationlights flickering and going out (see
“Effect ofOther Water Devices onIncoming Water Supply”).
6. As a further safeguard, a thermal cut-outswitches the power off if thewater temperature
climbs above the set limit and the “Overheat” light will illuminate.
This cut-out, whichgives anaudible click, may also operate due toresidual heat whenthe shower
is switched off. It will reset itself if waterisrunthroughthe shower for 10 to 20 seconds, and
the “Overheat” light will goout.
7. Thepressure relief device is tosafeguard against abnormal pressure conditions, and provides a
level ofappliance protectionshould anexcessive build ofpressure occur withinthe shower.
Effectof Seasonal Incoming Water Temperature Changes
The required water temperature is achieved by adjustingtherate ofwater flow.
Diagram 9 showsthe principle involved inrelating temperaturerise toflowrate.
The higher the water rate the lower thetemperature and vice versa.
The temperature of the water supplied fromthe mainscanvary considerably
throughout the year from5 to20°C.
This means that inthe winter, flow rate will be less thaninthe summer to
achieve the sameoutlet temperature.
Insummer the “Med (medium)” power setting may give adequate hotwater.
Insome winter conditions, it may be necessaryto select the inner or outer spray pattern only of
your shower handset. This will ensure correct operationof theshower witha slightlylower flowrate.
Effectof Other Water Devices on Incoming Water Supply
Yourshower is designedto stabilise temperature changes caused bywater pressure
fluctuations. These canresult fromtoilets beingflushed ortaps beingturned onand off.
Whenthis happens your showeringtemperature will be held withinacontrolled band, provided that
the minimum pressure required by the shower is maintained.
Yourshower requires a minimum running
pressure of 69kPa (0.7 bar, 10 psi).
At pressures above 69kPa (0.7 bar, 10 psi) it willminimise temperature fluctuations as detailed
above. Ifthe water pressure falls below69kPa (0.7 bar, 10 psi) it is likely that the pressure switch
w
illturnoffthe power tothe heating elements, resulting ina cold shower.
This will be indicated bythe middle power setting indicationlights flickering and going out.

We recommend that the installationis done inthe following sequence.
a. Fixing the shower to the wall b. Plumbing c. Electricalconnections
a. FIXING THESHOWER TO THE WALL
1. Positionthe riser railat a convenientheight formajority of users as
detailedin Diagram 1 and mark its position (alsosee separate
accessories fitting instructions).
2. Positionthe heater sothat the top of theunit is horizontaland level
with, or amaximum of 0.6 metres (2ft) below the topof the
riser rail. Choose a flat piece of wall toavoid the possibility of
distorting the backplate thusmaking thefront cover a poor fit.
3. Adjust the positiontoget the most convenient arrangement takingthe following intoaccount.
•The heater mustnotbe mountedin the directspray from the handset.
•The handset must not be ableto come intocontact withused water inthecubicle, bathor
basin. If it can, evenafter the hose has been retained by the retainingring (see separate
accessories fitting instructions sheet), a vacuumbreakermust be fitted.
4. Fix the riser rail withscrewsprovided (see separate instructions supplied withaccessories).
5. Decide the positionof the electrical cable into the unit. If toporbottomentry is chosen
(according to Diagram 7 onpage 9), cut away the walls inthe backplate as shownin Diagram 2.
6. Decide the positionofentry ofthecold water pipe intotheunit.
If top, cut away the backplate.
If rear, please read the sectiononplumbing.
If bottom, remove thefront cover (complete withknobs) and cutaway the detachable corner
sectionas shown.

7. If youhave not yet done so,remove the front cover assembly by undoing the retaining screws at
the top and bottomof the unit and lifting thecover off.
Your shower is provided with2 fixing positions inthe backplate (see Diagram 7 onpage 9).
The top-fixing hole is a “key-hole”slot(another key-hole is provided for alternate fixing), and
should be marked and drilled first.
Tightentop screwwith head protruding about 10mmfromthewall andhook the backplate over
thescrewhead. This allows for correct and accurate alignmentof your shower before marking
and fixing the bottomposition.
Youmay not wishtotightenupbothscrewsat this stage as the holes are elongated to allowfor
adjustment after other connections have takenplace.
b. PLUMBING
WARNING: ENSURE THAT THE MAINS WATERSUPPLY MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS
BELOW BEFORE CONTINUINGWITH INSTALLATION.
The heater must be connected to the mainscold water supply.
This must have a minimum running pressure of 69kPa (0.7 bar, 10 psi)
and a maximumpressure of690kPa (7.0 bar, 100 psi).
WARNING: BEFORE CONNECTING THE PIPE WORK TOTHE SHOWER,
ENSURE THATTHE PIPEWORK IS FULLY FLUSHEDOUT.
1. Unscrewthe “Red Cap” fromthe shower outlet pipeand discard it ina suitable manner.
It has beenused toseal the shower during transit, and is no longer required.
2. It is recommended that a WRAS(Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) listed isolating valve is
fitted tothe incoming mainscold water before theshower
unit.
This willallow the unit tobe serviced or exchanged withouthavingtoturnoff thewater at the
water stop valve.
3. Theheater canbe fed from a header tank provided this has a minimum head of7 metres (23ft).

Ø15mmcopper orstainless steel pipe should be used.
Toavoid cross threading, DO NOT REMOVE the nutfromthe elbow whenpositioning the pipe
.
If top entryisrequired, turnthe elbow 180° intothe required position.
If rear entry is required, treat as top entry withanadditional “Yorkshire” elbow (soldered type)
forfitting intothe rear channel.
Inmultiple installations, correctpipe work sizes should be calculated tomaintainadequate flow
toeach shower.
5. It is permissible touse a WRAS(Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) approved sealant sparingly
whilst avoiding excess finding its way intothe shower operating parts.
6. With isolating valve connected, flush thepipe work through to remove any particles etc,
before makingthefinal connectiontothe shower.
Blockage inthe water ways (particularly the handset and solenoid valve) will prevent theheater
working properly. Note: You may be charged for a service callif it is due toincorrect installation.
7. The shower is designed tohave anopenoutlet andshould onlybe used with “Redring”
recommended fittings.
Donotconnect thehandset until after the shower frontcover and corner section are fitted.

The personwho installed the shower is probably the best one to investigate andcorrect it and is

SELF HELP
If the shower is notworking satisfactorily, make the following checks before callingoutthe installer.
Anyone of these adjustments could restore the performance.
The shower cycles
from HOTto COLD The shower temperature is settoo hot causing the thermal cut-out (safety device) tooperate.
Turn knob “C” clockwise (direction of the “blue arrows”)
to increase water flow.
Slowly increase the water temperature by turning knob “C” anti-clockwise in the
direction of the “red arrows”until a comfortable showering temperature has
been reached.
YouMUST WAITapproximately 20seconds for each adjustment toaffect the
water temperature.
“Med (medium)” setting may need to be selected.
Water too HOT Increase water flow byadjusting knob “C”clockwise (direction of the “blue
arrows”).
“Med (medium)” setting may need to be selected.
Increase pressure to water supplye.g. fullyopen service valve or stopcock.
Check hose is not kinked restrictingthe water flow.
Clean shower handset.
Water too COLD Check power is onby neon being illuminated.
Decrease water flow by adjusting Knob“C” anti-clockwise (direction of the “red
arrows”).
“High” setting may need to be selected.
Select inner or outer only handset spray pattern.

Remember to upgrade the cable if it runs inthermal insulationina loft, or for a longer distance.
2. Ameansfor disconnectioninall poles must be incorporated inthefixed wiring inaccordance
withthe wiringrules.
We recommenda ceiling switchmounted ina convenient position.
3. Cut back cable as in Diagram 3. Connect cable to terminalblock making sure that allthe
retaining screws are VERY TIGHT and that no cable insulationis trapped under the screws.

4. Re-Fit the corner sectionback into the backplate.

5. Re-Fit the front cover (see Diagram 5),
a. Ensure knob “A”is aligned to the“High” position.
b. Ensure knob “C”is aligned to “12 o’clock.
c. Inthe main body ofthe shower, turn the “Camshaft” as shown.
d. In the main body of theshower, turn the “Numbered Dial” fully clockwise until it is at the position
shown. Note:- this instruction should be used if the “Drive Dial” becomes accidentally dislodged.
e. Fit the front cover of the shower to the main body.
Ensuring that the knobs correctly engaged to their mating component.
f. Check that knob “A” has been correctly aligned by ensuring that all3 power settings canbe selected.
g. Check that knob “C” has been correctlyaligned by turning anti-clockwise andensuring that knob turns
approximately 1 full turn and when turned back fullyclockwise, returns to “12 o’clock”.
h. Secure by replacing the top and bottom fasteningscrews.
6. Fit theshower hose, andoperate the shower first without the handset to flush out particles,
fit the handset and then operate the shower ason page 7 or 12 andcheck:
a. That the water gets to a satisfactory temperature and water flow can be adjusted bycontrol knob “C”.
b. Power selection operates in all 3 positions, giving achange in water temperature and that the power
indictor lightsfunctions correctly.
c. Check again for leaks
d. That the holes in the shower handset are not blocked
7. DEMONSTRATE OPERATION TO USERS
It is recommended that the shower unit and hose etc. be cleaned usinga soft cloth and that the useof
abrasive or solventbased cleaning fluid be avoided, especially on any plated finishes.
We recommend that beforeanycleaning, the isolating switch beturned off, thus avoiding accidentally
switching onthe shower.
WARNING: YOUMUST REGULARLYINSPECTTHE SHOWERHOSEFOR WEARANDDAMAGE.
REPLACEIFNECESSARY, OREVERYTWOYEARS, WITH OUR APPROVEDPART.
WARNING: IN ORDERTO MAINTAIN THE PERFORMANCE OF YOURSHOWER,
YOUMUST CLEANTHE SHOWERHANDSET REGULARLY
Allwater contains particles of lime-scal
e, whichbuild up in the shower handset and
unit reducing the performance.
It is therefore important to clean the shower handset bysimplyrubbing the rubber
nozzles, or soaking in a proprietary lime-scale removerand rinsing thoroughly before use.
NOTE: After use it is normal for somewater to drip from theshower handset for a

IF WATER IS TOO COLD
Turn knob“C” anti-clockwise in the
direction ofthe “red arrows” until the next
number is displayed in Window “D” and
continue turning anti-clockwise until you getthe
water temperature of your liking.
Wait20 seconds after eachadjustment for
the water temperatureto stabilise.
The final adjustment may be anywhere on the
scale, even between numbers.
If after turning fully anti-clockwise water is still
too cold,set shower pattern on shower handset
to outer or inner pattern only.
IF WATERIS TOO HOT
Turn knob“C” clockwise in the direction of the
“blue arrows” untilthe next number isdisplayed
in Window “D” and continue turning clockwise
until you get the water temperature of your liking.
Wait 20seconds after eachadjustment for the
water temperature to stabilise.
The final adjustment maybe anywhere on the
scale, even between numbers.
If after turning fully clockwise, water is stilltoo
hot, adjust knob “A” to “Med (medium)” setting
and re-adjust as above.
Waterflowwill be reduced on this setting.
1. Ensure the electricity and water are turned on to the unit.
2. Your shower has 2 control knobs(see Diagram 6).
Knob “A” controls the 3 power settings.
The most popular is “High”.
Thereare also options for a “Med (medium)”
or “Cold” shower (see notes 8and9).
Knob “C” controls the temperatureofthe water, and as a
helpfulguide the knob position is indicated by anumber
being displayed in Window “D”.
On the scale “1” is the coolest, whilst “9” is the hottest.
For this example turn knob “A” to “High”
and setknob “C” to displaynumber “5”.
3. Press button “B”. The water willflow and 3 lights will illuminate
to indicate that the selected power rating is “High” (indicated by “High” next to the Indicator Lights).
4. Allow about 20seconds for the temperatureofthe water to stabilise. It is recommended that you do
not wholly enter the waterspray during this period, especially if the shower has just been used.
5. Once atemperature setting to your likinghasbeen achieved, knob “C”willrarely need adjusting. You
must however take into account required adjustments for variations of incoming mains water temperature
between summer and winter(see “Effect of Seasonal Incoming Water Temperature Changes” page 10).
6. When you have finished showering, press button “B” only (the “Med (medium)” light willgo out).
Water will continue to flow for up to 7 seconds before switching off.
This reducesthe temperature of the water in thetank for the nextuser.
Wait for the water to stop, and then switchoff the electricityat the ceiling switchor local isolator.
7. The “Med (medium)” setting ofknob “A” reduces the powerusedby the shower givinga coolershower or
the option ofreduced water flow. This option is mainlyfor summer usage and ifthis is used then knob
“C” must be re-adjusted. On thissetting 2lights willilluminate.
8. The “Cold” setting of knob “A” will supply water without anyheating, and 1 light will illuminate.
9. Your shower is designed to stabilise temperature changes caused by water pressure fluctuations (see
“Effect of Other Water Devices on Incoming Water Supply” page 10).
WARNING: DO NOT SWITCH THE SHOWER ON IF YOUSUSPECT IT OFBEING FROZEN.
