2 SYSTEM COMPONENTS
2.1 Chapter Overview
This chapter outlines basic information and technical specifications for the
components of your SeaBat 8160 system.
2.2 Sonar Processor
The sonar processor is a dedicated computer that is responsible for the following
functions:
Sends DC power and control signals to the transceiver unit.
Receives digitized hydrophone signals and separates them into their
component parts for beamforming and processing.
Beamforms the received hydrophone signals.
Processes the beamformed signals to produce bottom range information
for each beam.
Manages seafloor bottom detection, graphical user interface, and serial
communications.
Processes bottom detection data for export to peripheral systems such
as bathymetric Data Acquisition Systems.
Receives and processes operator input.
Generates the graphical display.
2.2.1 Technical Specifications
The technical specifications of the sonar processor are listed in Table 2:

2.3 Transceiver Unit
The transceiver unit contains the system transmitter and receiver boards and is
responsible for the following functions:
Generates a synthesized calibration signal at power-on and injects it into
the receivers for use by the sonar processor.
Generates the transmit pulse and sends it to the projector array.
Receives reflected acoustic pulses from the receive array.
Amplifies, band-shifts, and multiplexes hydrophone signals, then sends
them to the sonar processor via the signal and control cable.
NOTE
The only operator control on the transceiver unit is the On/Off power isolation
switch on the rear panel. Once this switch is set to “On,” all power is controlled
by the sonar processor.
2.3.1 Technical Specifications
The technical specifications of the transceiver unit are listed in Table 3.

2.4 Processor to Transceiver Interconnection Cable
The processor to transceiver interconnection cable is a multiconductor cable that
provides a power, signal, and control interface between the sonar processor and
the transceiver unit. The standard cable length is 20 meters. Longer cables (up to
150 meters) may be ordered from RESON and will require adjustments to the
hardware.
2.5 Sonar Array
The sonar array transmits acoustic energy then receives the returning signal,
pre-amplifies it, and sends it to the transceiver unit. There are two distinct parts:
the transmit array and the receive array, arranged in a “T” configuration (see
section 2.5.2 Illustrations). Each array has an integrated 15 meter cable for
connection to the transceiver unit.
