Manufacturers Statement
Operation of the Rotolight Anova and true‘continuous light output’:
The Rotolight Anova is the rst professional LED light on the market that is a true
continuous light source using a totally icker free lighting control method, which
provides a huge number of advantages over other LED lighting products - notably
that the Rotolight Anova can be used with all high speed Video cameras and short
exposure times for Photography.
Each Rotolight Anova is hand calibrated for colour accuracy and soak tested prior to
shipping at PineWood Film Studios, England where they are manufactured, ensuring
an extremely high level of quality and performance.
Whereas many other LED lights on the market advertise themselves as being a
‘continuous light source’, all other LED lights on the market currently utilise a lighting
control technique known as ‘Pulse Width Modulation’(PWM) which means that infact
the light is not totally continuos, it is rapidly ‘pulsing’ light but at rates not visible
to the human eye. Whilst the human eye may not notice the dierence, Video and
Photographic cameras can and as a result, when operating at higher frame rates
and speeds, or from a photographic perspective shorter exposure times, the result
is black/dark frames rendering the video or photo useless.. The Rotolight Anova does
not utilise PWM at any brightness level and therefore is a true professional lighting
source that can be used with all higher speed cameras and shorter exposure times
on stills cameras.
The other downside of LED lights that utilise PWM is that if you are using them in
conjunction with any other AC powered light sources, then there is a very strong
possibility they will result in a strobing eect due to the respective pulse from the AC
current and the competing PWM pulse of the LED lights going out of phase/sync. The
Rotolight Anova does not use PWM and will never cause strobing and therefore can
be seamlessly integrated into any existing Studio.
Expected Operation below 10% power level:
As the Rotolight Anova is the rst professional LED light on the market not to utilise
PWM and the many issues detailed above caused by it, the Anova instead features a
‘constant current dimming’ system which means the the LED’s never pulse even at
lower light levels.
Whereas all other professional LED’s currently on the market use PWM, many of them
only dim to a minimum of 10% or do not oer‘total fade to black’ functionality which
is a requirement for professional Studio operation.
One potential result of not using PWM and oering a total fade to black which the
Anova provides, is that at levels lower than 10% it may be possible for one or two
LED’s to icker or not re due to microscopic dierences in the current tolerances of
the LED’s, which are being starved of current at less than 10%. Do not be concerned,
this would be considered normal operation for the light and is simply a standard
design limitation of LED’s on the market if you want to oer a true continuous light
source which the Anova provides.
