Assembly Instructions
Rutland Shade Pergola

Before you commence the assembly process, we recommend that you read these instructions
thoroughly beforehand to familiarise yourself with the assembly process and to also check that you have
the correct components. If for any reason you need assistance, you can find our contact details on the
final page of these instructions.
We strongly recommend that any assembly is carried out on an open flat, level surface if possible and
with sufficient space. You will also require the assistance of at least 2 adults to complete assembly
safely.
If for any reason you don’t feel confident in completing this project, we would recommend consulting a
qualified professional to undertake the work.

Tools required:
10mm socket, No2 Pozidriv screwdriver (or electric driver), step ladder or
platform.

Step 2
Begin by laying the posts on a flat, level surface and then
placing one of the runners, countersinks uppermost on
top of it as shown. Use the markings on the runner to
correctly space and align the posts at 90° to the runner
with the post top flush with the top edge of the runner
and fix each one into place with 2 x 70mm coachscrews.
Repeat for the remaining posts and runner.
Use your assistants to lift the 2 post assemblies into the
vertical position as shown, parallel to each other and
approximately the length of a rafter apart.

Position a rafter (ensure the short fixing batten is
lowermost) with each end housed against the post and
flush with the top of the post as shown. Fix each end into
place with 2 x 70mm coachscrews.
Add the remaining rafter to the other end of the structure
in the same manner as before.

Add a brace to both sides of each post securing into place
with 2 x 65mm woodscrews through the brace into the
runner/rafter and a single 75mm woodscrew through the
brace into the post.
Continue adding braces until all 12 are installed as shown.

Lower the roof runner onto the fixing battens on the inner
face of the rafters, using the markings on the fixing
battens to position them centrally…
...then fix into place with 120mm coachscrew through the
top of the roof runner into the fixing batten at both ends.

Lower a roof slat onto the end of the assembly positioned so
that its edges are flush with the rafter and runner edges,
fixing both ends and the centre into place with 2 x 65mm
woodscrews. Repeat for the other end.
Now take the remaining roof slats and space them equally
across the roof as shown before, fixing both ends and the
centre of each slat into place with 2 x 65mm woodscrews.

Now take a panel slat and attach it directly beneath the
rafter. Ensure both ends are flush with the posts before
securing each end into place with 2 x 65mm woodscrews.
Add a second panel slat, this time at the bottom of the
posts, fixing into place in the same way. Now measure the
gap between the underside of the top panel slat and the top
edge of the lower panel slat and make a note of it for
reference in the next step.

Lay out the remaining panel slats as shown and measure the
distance across the slats, noting down this measurement and
number of slats. Now calculate the spacing for your panel
slats as follows:
Step 12 measurement minus Step 13 measurement divided
by (number of slats plus 1).
Example: 2365mm –1330mm = 1035mm, 14 slats + 1 = 15
So, 1035mm ÷ 15 = 69mm
If you wish to increase the spacing you can of course remove
slats and redo the calculation shown in the previous step.
Fix the panel slats into place with 2 x 65mm woodscrews in
each end, spacing them as you go using the figure calculated
in the previous step.

Now attach the panel rail down the centre of the panel slats
,vertically centred on the slats before fixing into place with 2
x 65mm woodscrews per slat.
