Installation of Energiser and Fence
Electric fences should be installed and operated so that they cause no
danger to persons, animals or surroundings and as far as is reasonably
practicable, they are out of reach of children and not subject to mechanical
damage. Never connect more than one energiser to the same single or
multi-wire fence. Any other fence systems powered by a different energiser
should be at least 2.5 metres apart. If this gap is to be closed, use non-
conductive material or an isolated metal barrier. Any electric fence or part
thereof installed along a public road or pathway should be identified by
warning signs at regular intervals. The warning sign should have a yellow
background and be at least 100 mm x 200 mm. The words
“Caution Electric Fence” or symbol should appear in black,
permanent marking on both sides of the sign and be at least
25mm in height.
• Barbed wire must not be electried.
• If an electric fence has to be installed in the vicinity of overhead power
lines it should not cross above it or run in parallel to it for any great
distance. If it is necessary to pass under overhead powerlines it should be
done at right angles and the vertical distance between any fence wire and
the surface of the earth should not exceed two metres.
• If an electric fence has to be installed near any communication lines, the
distance from the lines and the fence or any part of it should be more than
two metres.
• If the energiser is installed in the vicinity of any building, care must be
taken to ensure that the earth for the electric fence is more than 10 metres
away from any domestic electricity board earth or telecommunications
system earth.
• Follow the manufacturer’s directions for proper earthing of your electric
fence.
• Use insulated cable for connecting leads that run inside buildings or
underground. Take care to avoid damage from animal hooves or vehicle
tyres and use a conduit of insulating material if needed.
• Do not install connecting leads in the same conduit as the mains supply
wiring, communication cables or data cables.
• Low output energisers provide satisfactory and safe performance for
deterring birds, household pets and training animals such as cows.
• If the electric fence is intended to deter birds from roosting on buildings,
do not connect the fence wire to the earth terminal. Use a warning sign at
any point where a person may access the fence wire.

How Electric Fencing Works
Manufacture Standard
Built to Comply with the following standards: CE, IPX4, EN60355-2-76
EN55014, EN301489, EN60950-1, EN301511.
Safety
• Keep combustible materials away from the connection to the fence
energiser.
• If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the
manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified person in order to
avoid a hazard.
Warning: Avoid touching electric fence wires, especially with the head,
neck or torso. Do not climb over, through or under multi-wire electric
fence. Use a gate or a specially designed crossing point. Incorporate a
non-electrified gate or crossing stile where an electric fence crosses a
public pathway. At any such crossing the adjacent electric fence should
carry warning signs.

STEP 5: Connect to Battery
Note:
When the energiser is rst switched on the LED indicators will go
through a sequence of flashing. This is the initial test mode.
The GSM function will not be fully operational until the
indicator light flashes green. This can take up to forty
five minutes.
Note:
If the top two lights are flashing alternately then
there is a fault with the energiser. Check your
battery connections. If they continue to flash
contact your retailer/service agent for repair.

Fence Line Maintenance
• Regularly test voltage at the furthest point on the fence line from the
energiser – we recommend Rutland Digital Tester 14-172 or 8-Light
Tester 14-173
• Routinely check all fence and
earth connections to ensure
they are sound
• For best performance, keep
fence line free of vegetation
• Keep insulators free from dirt,
dust and cobwebs

Energiser Features.
This section describes the features and use of the GSM functions
Sends SMS if fence voltage is low for any reason and can report fence
voltage at any time. Note: After first connecting the GSM Monitor to a
fence, or after turning the fence energiser on, allow several minutes for
the fence voltage to be registered by the GSM Monitor before a low voltage
warning will be issued.
Turn Energiser on/off by remote control.
Sends SMS if power supply suddenly fails (battery removed or rapidly
fails) The unit has an internal emergency backup supply which is
enough to send a power failed alert via an SMS message even if the
battery is removed from the unit.
Get status report any time (fence voltage, energiser on/off, hi/lo
power
mode) with the STA command
Simple easy to remember SMS commands e.g. STA to get status
report, ONN to turn energiser on Sends confirmation SMS after each
successful command.
Roaming SIM automatically switches to best network (even abroad)
SIM shipped fitted in unit means user doesn’t have to open it!
Requires contract and direct debit. Will also work with pay-as-you-go
SIM
**** Secret PIN option prevents unauthorized use. Unit can be disabled in the
event of theft. PIN is optional.

Contract SIM.
If the GSM enabled energiser comes with a pre-installed SIM you will need
to register the SIM with the airtime provider before you can use the GSM
functions (the energiser will work without SIM registration). Fill in the form
provided in the box and send it off (including direct debit mandate) to the
address on the form.
When the SIM has been registered the airtime provider will send confirmation
of the contract and the phone number for the SIM. When you have this you
can continue with the Quick Start guide below.
Pay as you go SIM.
If the GSM enabled energiser did not come with a pre-installed SIM you will
need to purchase a Pay As You Go SIM from a local retailer or mobile phone
supplier.
Before you can use the SIM in the energiser the SIM should be activated by
fitting it into a mobile phone. Follow the instructions provided with the SIM
to activate it and add credit. Test the SIM by sending a text or making a brief
phone call. When the SIM is working, remove it from the phone.
SIM Installation.
1. Disconnect the energiser from the battery and remove the cover using a
Torq #15 driver (Fig 1). Take care not to touch any electrical parts inside.
2. Locate the SIM holder (Fig 2).
3. Open the SIM holder by sliding the metal bar towards the hinge and lift the
metal bar (Fig 3)
Fig. 1 Fig. 2 Fig. 3

- 13 -
4. Slide the SIM into the SIM holder and ensure it is pushed all the way in
(Fig 4).
5. Ensure that the alignment notch is as shown in Fig 5, close the SIM holder
and lock it by sliding the metal bar away from the hinge.
Fig. 4 Fig. 5
6. Re-fit the cover and power the energiser up.
7. Wait up to 45 minutes or until the GSM status light on the energiser is
flashing green.
Quick Start Guide.
Follow these steps to get your GSM device working:
1) Register your SIM card
2) Turn on the device and wait for GSM light to flash green
(allow up to 45 minutes for the internal emergency battery to charge)
3) Once SIM is activated, create a new contact in your mobile phone for the
ESB Remote Monitoring Energiser mobile phone number
4) Text the word REG to the ESB device. Wait for a response.
5) To test the unit, wait 5 minutes then turn off the energiser. An SMS
warning message should be issued by the GSM device.

- 14 -
GSM status Indicator.
Off : The GSM function is not working (possibly because the
internal emergency supply is still charging). Wait up to 45
minutes for it to fully charge.
Red flashing: The GSM device is initializing. This may take several
minutes. If this indicator continues to flash for more than
several minutes it may be because there is no mobile phone
signal, the mobile phone network is busy or there is a
problem with the SIM or GSM module. Try relocating the
unit away from obstructions like metal structures or low
points in the terrain. If the problem persists try another
working SIM or test the SIM in a mobile phone. If necessary
return the unit to the point of purchase for repair.
Green flashing: The GSM device is ready.
Rapid green
Flashing: An SMS message is being sent or received.
Basic commands.
REG Registers a mobile phone number with the GSM device
PIN xxxx Stores a 4 digit security PIN number in the GSM device
ONN Turns the GSM device/energiser ON.
OFF Turns the GSM device/energiser OFF.
STA Requests the GSM device to send a status report via SMS message
including the electric fence voltage and the battery supply voltage
(if a battery energiser).
Note: In the case of a contracted SIM the mobile number for your the GSM
device is supplied to you during the
SIM card registration process.
Note: The SIM registration form can be found inside the packaging along
with the user manual.

- 15 -
Electric Fence Monitoring .
The GSM device will monitor the output from the energiser.
The GSM device has a maximum measuring capability of 8,500V.
If an electric fence has a higher voltage than this it will still be displayed as
8,500V.
The Low fence volts detection point is at approximately 3,000V If the fence
volts drop below this for more than a few seconds a warning will be sent.
Sends a warning via SMS message if the power supply is disconnected or
fails.

PIN Command.
Sets or changes the PIN number stored in the GSM unit. The PIN prevents
unauthorized commands from being acted upon by the GSM device and can
prevent an unauthorized user from re-enabling the unit in the event of theft.
When setting the PIN, choose a number combination which is difficult to
guess.
If no PIN is currently stored send PIN^xxxx where xxxx is the PIN you want
to use. IE: PIN^1234
If a PIN is stored and you wish to change it, send PIN^xxxx^nnnn where xxxx
is the current PIN and nnnn is the new PIN.
The current PIN must match the one already stored.
If a PIN is stored it will be needed with each subsequent command (except
STA).
If a PIN is stored, it will be needed if the REG command is sent from a new
phone. This prevents control of the GSM device from being taken over by an
unauthorized phone.
Note 1: The PIN is optional but recommended for increased security
Note 2: If used, the PIN must be 4 numbers
IMPORTANT: Keep you PIN number safe and do not disclose it.
