Unfortunately for staffies Zoe and Brim, their lease on the laundry of the family home had run out and was
time to move into a new residence! After a short family meeting it was agreed that they both would be happy
to share the same house, but insisted they have their own entry door!

Gable end
Mark out the gable ends (see Diagram 1). Measure the distance from the saw blade to the
outer edge of the base plate (100mm). Securely clamp a straightedge parallel to the set-out
line. Carefully guide the saw along the edge. Repeat this process for the opposite gable end.
Door openings
Use a jigsaw to cut the door openings. Tip: Drill a 10mm starter hole in both corners of the
door opening to start and finish the jigsaw cut. Round over all cut edges with a trimmer or
router fitted with a 5mm round over bit.
Fixing cleats
Glue and screw the fixing cleats to the inside of the sides, ensuring the edges are flush.
Three 28 x 8g screws in each piece will do the trick.
Assembly
Glue and screw fixing cleats along the bottom inside edge of the front gable (between the
openings) and along the bottom edge of the back gable. Screw (no glue*) through the
front gable piece into the fixing cleat attached to the side. Repeat the process for the back
gable. Attach bottom.
Planing
The protruding square edge of the side panels will hinder the roof panels. This is best
removed with a plane or circular saw, either powered or hand. Tip: Planing in towards the
centre from both sides will avoid ‘‘blowing out’’ the face of the gable ends.
Roof support
Glue and screw some fixing cleats to the inside face of each gable. The angle of the ridge
(peak of roof) needs to be bisected (halved) and may be cut on a mitre saw or by hand.
It may also be left square short of the ridge - Zoe and Brim won’t tell anyone!

Ridge support
Bevel the top edge of the ridge in both directions to correspond with the roof pitch. This
beveling is safely done by using a planer, with the piece securely clamped in a vice. Attach
the ridge by screwing through the gable end with one 40mm x 8g screw. (No glue*)
Roofing
Begin by screwing the first roof panel to the gable ends. (Work from the bottom up to the
ridge.) The overlap then next panel and screw through both pieces. 40mm x 8 galvanised
screws are used. Repeat this process for the opposite side.
Waterproofing
A small gap is formed where the square edges of the roof panels meet at the ridge.
Squeeze a bead of paintable silicone onto both edges, cut a length of 12.5mm dowel to the
same length as the roof panels and bed it firmly into the silicone. Clean off excess silicone.
Provide some shade
Glue and screw (28 x 8g) the awning cleats to the front panel just above the door
openings. Glue and screw the awning roof panels to the cleats. I decided to bevel these
roof panels as a design feature. This was done with a jigsaw. Then round off the edges
with a trimmer.
Venting
Mark the central position of the vent and the cut-out size. Drill a 10mm starter hole in each
corner and cut out using a recip saw. Install another vent on the back gable end. Attach
with 12mm x 6g pan head self-tapping screws.
Finishing
I reckon my new mates Zoe and Brim will love their new residence! Apply two coats of
your favourite colour of exterior paint and set it down on a couple of bricks in a nice cool
shady spot. The owners are now happy to have their laundry back!
*Gluing the assembly process will not allow for any future disassembly. This may be
required for transportation purposes or even getting down the side of the house.
