How to Use This Guide
Welcome — you’ve made the right choice
The advantages of Sprint are as clear as each wireless call you
make. With PCS Service, we give you what you really want from a
wireless service provider – clear calls, easy-to-understand service
plans and self-servicing options for managing your account. All this
is designed to make your life easier and worry free.
We know you’re eager to start using your phone right away, and this
guide is divided into two sections that are designed to help you do
just that.
The first section will guide you through the steps required to
set up your PCS Service. It includes blanks so you can write
down important information we’ll share with you that you’ll want
to remember. Things like your new PCS Phone Number,
information about your service plan and your first invoice.
The second section will guide you through the basics of your
phone and service, with quick, easy-to-follow instructions.

This guide covers the basics, but your phone is capable of
performing a variety of advanced services. To learn to use all the
advanced features of your phone and service, visit

Readme First
Please make sure you review the following items before using the
Sprint PCS Phone (SPH-i500). Failure to do so may result in
unexpected problems.
Password Required to Synchronize
When you HotSync the first time, you are required to enter a
password to begin the operation. This password is defaulted to the
last 4 digits of your Sprint PCS phone number or “0000” if the
phone is not activated yet.
To unassign a password
1. From the phone application, select the menu icon.
2. Select Options and then Security.
3. Tap the Assigned box and enter your password (0000 or last 4-
digits of your mobile number) and tap OK.
4. Tap Unassigned to remove the current password.
New Users
If you have not used a Palm device in the past, insert the CD into
your computer and make your selections from the menu to begin
installation of the software.
Palm Desktop Software
Install the Palm Desktop® software on your computer so you can
enter and update information on your phone and on the desktop or
laptop computer. Data can be synchronized in both places with a
press of a button.

Palm Users
You must have Palm Desktop for Windows version 4.1 or higher to
perform a HotSync operation with the SPH-i500 handset.
Quick Reference
Avoiding Problems with your i500
1. DO NOT plug in the cradle or data cable prior to installing the
USB drivers on the distribution CD! If you have already done so,
please see the "Common Problems" section with the question "I
am having problems when trying to install a USB device or a
USB device is not recognized." for resolution.
2. The i500 is a native-mode USB device; you MUST have "Local
USB" checked in HotSync to ensure proper syncing with your PC
or laptop. If you also have Palm OS serial devices that you sync to
your system, we recommend that you leave the "Local Serial"
unchecked when not HotSyncing the legacy Palm OS serial
device(s) to avoid potentially confusing error messages from
HotSync.
3. NEVER plug in the USB cable while your system is booting up.
Plug in the USB cable prior to booting or after the system has
completely booted up and the HotSync icon is showing in your
system tray.
4. NEVER attempt to start a HotSync operation while your system is
booting up. ALWAYS wait until you see the HotSync icon in the
system tray prior to starting a HotSync operation.

5. If you are using the Sprint PCS Business Connection Palm client
on your i500, leave the handset out of the cradle while your
system is booting up. If the Business Connection client does a
scheduled sync or receives a pushed message while your system is
booting up, the device may not be properly recognized by your
system. If this occurs, simply reboot your system with the handset
out of the cradle.

• Your Social Security number or your driver’s license number.
• Your Electronic Serial Number (also known as ESN; refer to
step 5 to locate the number).
• The city and state where your phone will be primarily used.

www.sprintpcs.com. Your default password is the last four
digits of your Social Security number.

Finding your phone’s ESN
If you set up service using your PCS Phone, the network
automatically communicates the ESN to us. You’ll only need
this number when you’re setting up service online at
activate.sprintpcs.com or calling us from a phone other than your
new PCS Phone. The ESN, or Electronic Serial Number, is an 11-
digit number written on the barcode sticker attached to the phone.
To find it, remove the phone’s battery.

phone by holding down the key for a few seconds.

PCS Clear PaySM Program
(This section may not apply to you. If not, skip to section 7.)

Easy steps to follow to help keep you enjoying your
new PCS Service
• Dial from your PCS phone or log into
www.sprintpcs.com to find out how many minutes or how much
data (if applicable) you have currently used within your service
plan. If you have exceeded your minutes or data in your plan or
you have a past due balance, you should make a payment to keep
your service turned on.
There are two easy payment options:
• Make a payment at any Western Union location using the Swiftpay
form. To find the nearest location, dial
from your PCS phone. (Transaction fee applies; payment is
credited to your account within 12 hours.)
• Dial from your PCS phone (posting time is 12
hours)
How we will help you keep your service turned on:
• In the event that your service has been turned off, you will receive a
text message stating: "Your PCS service has been turned off. Tap
to make a payment and turn service on."

• The first time your service has been turned off, you will be
connected to a live PCS Clear Pay Program Specialist who will
explain why your service has been turned off. You will be asked to
pay your balance to get service turned on (payment will be credited
and service turned back on within 12 hours).
• For any additional times that your service has been turned off, you
will be connected to our automated payment process. You will have
to pay your balance to have your service turned back on (payment
will be credited and service turned back on within 12 hours).
