1. General
1.1. DSL(xDSL)
Digital Subscriber Line, or DSL, refers to a family of technologies that provide a digital connection over copper wires of
the local telephone network.
SVR-1630 can be connected on Internet through DSLas follows.
 The simplest configuration is SVR-1630 is to connect to DSL Modem directly.
 If DSL router and s switch are added onto the above network, several clients (PC and SVR-1630) can be
installed onto the network by sharing an IP address.
 There are also some routers that are integrated with a switch, so that the router itself mayrun as a switch.
*Please note that crossover cables might not be necessary for connection between DSL modems and the respective
connected device(s). Regular straight through cables maybe used.
Each network environment requires setting SVR-1630 and DSL router differently. However, the basics on setup are
similar to each other. The major difference is whether DSL router supports PPPoE or SVR-1630 is configured for
supporting the PPPoE function.
Examples of DSL technologies (sometimes called xDSL) include IDSL, ADSL, HDSL, RADSL, SDSL, VDSL, and
G.SHDSL.

1.2. Modem
1.2.1. Modem
The word is from Pierre Lacoste "modem", a portmanteau word constructed from "modulator" and "demodulator", refers
to a device that modulates an analog "carrier" signal (such as sound), to encode digital information, and that also
demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be
transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Primarily used to communicate via telephone lines,
modems can be used over any means of transmitting analog signals, from driven diodes to radio.
1.2.2. DSLModem
DSL modems are also a kind of modem, the main difference being that they are not limited to the "voiceband" audio
frequencies carried over the telephone line.
1.2.3. ModemPort Description
Each modem mayhave different buttons and LEDs. However modems mayhave following buttons or ports.
- Power Switch: This button is to turn on the Modem.
- Power Connector: This is to supply power to the Modem.
- Ethernet: This port is to connect Ethernet cable to DSL Router (or SVR-1630, PC etc)
- DSL: This port is to connect telephone line.

1.3. DSLRouter
1.3.1. Router
A router consists of a computer networking device that determines the next network point to which to forward a data
packet toward its destination, a process known as routing. Arouter must be connected to at least two networks, or it will
have nothing to route. A router creates and/or maintains a table, called a "routing table" that stores the best routes to
certain network destinations and the "routing metrics" associated with those routes.
 Routing is a core concept of the Internet and many other networks. Routing provides the means of forwarding
logically addressed packets from their local subnetwork toward their ultimate destination. In large networks
packets may pass through many intermediarydestinations before reaching their destination.
 A router creates and/or maintains a table, called a "routing table" that stores the best routes to certain network
destinations and the "routing metrics" associated with those routes.
1.3.2. DSLRouter
DSL router is a router that processes PPPoE to make Internet connection through DSLModem. Most of the routers used
in home or small business has PPPoE feature. To share a DSL Modem with more than one networked device such as a
PC or SVR-1630, a router is necessary.
1.3.3. Router Port Description
EveryDSLrouter mayhave following buttons or ports.
 Power Switch: This button is to turn on the router.
 Power Connector: This is to supply power to the router.
 LAN Port: This port is to connect clients like SVR-1630, PC etc. Normally there is one LAN port unless
the DSLrouter is a switch-integrated model.
 WAN Port: This port is to connect DSL Modem.
 Uplink Port: This port is to connect to another switch or HUB. There is no Uplink port unless the DSL
router is a switch-integrated model.

2. Installing SVR-1630 to DSL Modem without DSL Router
2.1. Network Configuration
This configuration is typical with a network that onlyhas a dynamic IP address.
2.1.1. Connection
In this network configuration, each device should be wired as below.
 Telephone line (DSL) is connected to DSLModem
 DSL Modem and SVR-1630 should be connected with the Ethernet cable that is provided by ISP (usually
a crossover cable).

2.1.2. How it works
For this configuration, the SVR-1630 does PPPoE process to get an IP address from ISP to be connected onto Internet.
1) SVR-1630 does PPPoE process through DSLModem.
2) SVR-1630 gets a dynamic IPaddress from ISP.
3) SVR-1630 register the assigned IP address to SWR on Internet.
4) User accesses SVR-1630 with the registered IP address through SVR Manager on Internet.
For the first three steps, please refer to following Chapter (2.2 SVR Configuration). And for the last step of accessing
SVR-1630 over Internet, please refer to ‘TN 3016 Accessing SVR-1630 on WAN’.

2.2. SVR-1630 Configuration
With this network, SVR-1630 should set the network values as follows. There is no need to set DSL Modem.
2.2.1. Network Configuration
1) Press ‘Menu’ button.
2) Go to [System] – [Network] - [Network] menu.
3) Set ‘Type’ as ‘xDSL’.
4) Leave ‘DHCP’ as ‘Off’.
5) Leave ‘IP address’, ‘Netmask’, and ‘Gateway’ with default values.
6) Set ‘DNS1’, ‘DNS2’, and ‘DNS3’ properly. If you do not have the value, please find out from your ISP (the
Internet service provider that bills you for the service) and ask the values. (At least DNS1 should be set.)

2.2.2. PPPoE Configuration
1) Press ‘Menu’ button.
2) Go to [System] – [Network] - [xDSL] menu.
3) Enter ‘User ID’with your ID.
4) Enter ‘Password’with your password. User ID and password is provided byISP

2.2.3. SWR Configuration
1) Press ‘Menu’ button.
2) Go to [System] – [Network] - [SWR] menu.
3) Set ‘SWR Interval’. The minimum value is 60 seconds. ‘0’ second means the SVR-1630 is not set to register to
SWR.
4) Leave ‘SWR URL’ as ‘webthru.to’. If you do not have DNS address, set ‘SWR URL’ as ‘210.116.114.37’.
5) Enter ‘Group ID’ with a desired one. The ID is limited to 16 characters.

2.2.4. Configuring through SVR-1630 ConfigStation
Access SVR-1630 with ConfigStation program and go to ‘Network’tab and configure as below.
2.2.4.1. Ethernet
- Leave the values as default.
- Do
not check ‘DHCP Enable’ menu
2.2.4.2. XDSL[PPPoE]
- Click ‘xDSL[PPPoE] menu
- Enter ‘User ID’and ‘Password’.

2.2.4.3. DNS
- Enter DNS #1, #2 and #3.
- At the very least DNS #1 should be inputted with correct values.
2.2.4.4. SWR
- Set ‘Registration Interval’. Minimum value is 60 seconds.
- Leave ‘Registration server’ as default value of ‘webthru.to’. If you don’t know DNS address, change the
value with the SWR IP address of 210.116.103.42
- Enter ‘Group ID’ with a desired one. The ID is limited to 16 characters.

3. Installing an SVR-1630 to DSL Router
3.1. Network Configuration
This configuration is to share an IP address with multiple PCs and a single SVR-1630.
3.1.1. Connection
For this network configuration, each device should be configured as below.
 Telephone line (DSL) is connected to DSLModem
 DSLModem and DSL router should be connected with the Ethernet cable that is provided by ISP (usually
a crossover cable).
 PC and SVR-1630 should be connected to DSLrouter with Ethernet cables (must be direct cables).

3.1.2. How it works
For this network configuration, the DSL router does PPPoE process to get an IP address from ISP. It is necessary to set
DSLrouter to do ‘Port Forwarding’ so that SVR-1630 can be accessed by SVR Manager over Internet.
1) DSLrouter does PPPoE process through DSLModem.
2) DSLrouter gets a dynamic (official) IP address from ISP.
3) SVR-1630 goes out to Internet by translating the local IP address to the official IP address that is acquired by
DSLrouter.
4) SVR-1630 register the translated official IP address to SWR on Internet.
5) User accesses SVR-1630 with the registered IP address through SVR Manager on Internet.
6) DSL router translates the official IP address to the local IP address of SVR-1630 and routes the traffic to SVR-
1630.
For the first four steps, please refer to following Chapter (3.2 SVR Configuration and 3.3 DSL Router Configuration).
For the last two steps of accessing SVR-1630 over Internet, please refer to ‘TN 0016 Accessing SVR-1630 on WAN’.

SVR-1630 Configuration
3.2.1. Network Configuration
1) Press ‘Menu’ button.
2) Go to [System] – [Network] - [Network] menu.
3) Set ‘Type’ as ‘Ethernet’.
4) Leave ‘DHCP’ as ‘Off’.
5) Set ‘IP address’ with a certain IP address which belongs to the DSL router’s sub-network range. Please refer to
the below examples. This example is assuming that the Netmask is ‘255.255.255.0’

If the router limits IP addresses for the clients, SVR-1630 should be assigned an IP address of the
range.
6) Supposing DSLrouter has ‘Netmask’as 255.255.255.0, enter ‘Netmask’as 255.255.255.0
7) Enter ‘Gateway’ with the same value as the DSL router’s IP address. (See for the Gateway address of each
manufacturer. However this maydiffer among models ofthe manufacturer. Most cases, it is 192.168.xxx.1)

8) Set ‘DNS1’, ‘DNS2’, and ‘DNS3’ properly. If you do not have the value, contact your ISP (from where you
purchased the Internet line) and ask for values. (At the very least DNS1 should be set.)

PPPoE Configuration
In most cases, DSL router does the PPPoE process. Therefore, SVR-1630 should be configured not to do PPPoE in
most cases. Skip this menu leaving each menu with default value.
3.2.2. SWR Configuration
1) Press ‘Menu’ button.
2) Go to [System] – [Network] - [SWR] menu.
3) Set ‘SWR Interval’. The minimum value is 60 seconds. ‘0’ second means the SVR-1630 is not set to register to
SWR.
4) Leave ‘SWR URL’ as ‘webthru.to’. If you do not have DNS address, set ‘SWR URL’ as ‘210.116.103.43’.
5) Enter ‘Group ID’ with a desired one. The ID is limited to 16 characters.

3.2.3. Port Setting
1) Press ‘Menu’ button.
2) Go to [System] – [Network] - [Port Settings] menu.
3) Leave ‘Monitoring Port’as ‘8001’through which SVR Monitor program accesses SVR-1630.
4) Leave ‘Playback Port’as ‘8105’, through which SVR Playback program accesses SVR-1630.
 The ports for Monitor (8001) and Playback (8105) are configurable, so that user may change the ports of the
default setting if they are not available on the network. If only one port is open to public, then user may use
‘Firewall’ menu to make SVR Monitor and SVR Playback programs access SVR-1630 through the same port.
However, the video transmission speed will be decreased.
 Should the port be changed, please use following ports. SVR-1630 uses some ports internally, and SVR-1630 will
not work if those ports are assigned for Monitoring and Playback. And it is also important to check if the port-to-
use is not occupied byother device or not on the network before assigning the port to SVR-1630.

3.2.4. Configuring through SVR-1630 ConfigStation
Access SVR-1630 with ConfigStation program and go to ‘Network’ tab to configure as below.
3.2.4.1. Ethernet
- Change ‘IP Address’, ‘Network Mask’, and ‘GatewayAddress’ properly by referring to Page 32.
- Do
not check ‘DHCP Enable’ menu
3.2.4.2. XDSL[PPPoE]
- Do
not check ‘xDSL[PPPoE] menu. DSLrouter should support PPPoE.

3.2.4.3. DNS
- Enter DNS #1, #2 and #3.
- At the very least DNS #1 should be inputted with correct values.
3.2.4.4. SWR

3.2.4.5. PortAssignment
- Check if the ‘Monitor’ and ‘Playback’ ports’ values.
- If the default ports are not open on the network, change the ports with available ones.
- Should the port be changed, please use following ports. SVR-1630 uses some ports internally, and SVR-
1630 will not work if those ports are assigned for Monitoring and Playback. And it is also important to
check if the port-to-use is not occupied by other devices or not on the network before assigning the ports
to SVR-1630.
