Using the FT-5Using the FT-5
IntroductionIntroduction The FT-5 TerminalFT-5 Terminal, used in conjunction with your telephone system,
offers greater control of telephone traffic by means of single key access
and flashing lamp indications.
Exchange lines can be answered and accessed selectively rather than in
the normal queued mode, giving increased flexibility in traffic
management.
An FT-5 TerminalFT-5 Terminal has 14 Selection Keys and Busy Lamps which can be
programmed to represent a Line, an Extension, a Group of Lines or a
Group of Extensions. The FT-5 TelephoneFT-5 Telephone can take a headset via a
switched junction box for headset/handset operation. The headset fitted
mustmust be an SDX headset.
Answering CallsAnswering Calls To answer an incoming call from a line or group (Medium flash of aTo answer an incoming call from a line or group (Medium flash of a
field lamp)field lamp)::
1. Press the associated key to answer the call.
2. When field lamp goes to Fast Flash.Fast Flash.
3. Lift handset and speak.
If your terminal is ringing when there is no incoming call appearing on a
field lamp, the call is either an internal or external line which does not
have a lamp appearance on your FT-5.

Making CallsMaking Calls Any call can be dialled on-hook; lift handset when called party answers.
To call another extensionTo call another extension::
1. Key extension number.
To call an external numberTo call an external number::
1. Press 99 then key external number.
To call a personal stored numberTo call a personal stored number::
1. Press ## then select from the 00/0400/04 stores (see Storing ExternalStoring External
NumbersNumbers).
To call a central directory numberTo call a central directory number::
1. Press ## then select from the Central Speed Store.
To repeat last number dialledTo repeat last number dialled::

Call an Extension with a Field LampCall an Extension with a Field Lamp
To call an idle extension (lamp Off)To call an idle extension (lamp Off)::
1. Press the required extension key.
2. Field lamp flashes at Medium RateMedium Rate if ringing extension is an FT-1, 2,
3 or 4.
3. Field lamp goes to Fast FlashFast Flash during the call.
Note: You cannot transfer an external call to an extension in this manner.
External Call on a specific LineExternal Call on a specific Line
To select an external line (lamp Off)To select an external line (lamp Off)::
1. Press the appropriate key to seize the line.
2. Field lamp goes to Fast FlashFast Flash during the call.
PagePage You can pagepage over the loudspeakers of all free extensions in a group or
on the system and optionally wait for an answer from an extension.

1. Press and dial 7.7.
2. Dial in extension or group number.
3. Lift handset and make announcement.

If you hear another extension ringing that you wish to answer (butIf you hear another extension ringing that you wish to answer (but

1. Press FunctionFunction and Pick-upPick-up.
2. Lift the handset.
You must define the scope of the call Pick-up feature by programming a
Pick-upPick-up number to indicate which ringing extensions you wish to answer.
The Pick-upPick-up number can either be an extension or a group number. The
original programming of your SDX puts allall extensions in group 10. See
your System Manager for details of local group numbers.
To program pick-up numberTo program pick-up number::
1. While off-hook, press , dial 0101 and press .
2. Dial Pick-upPick-up group or extension number.
3. Replace handset.
Call BackCall Back If you dial an extension and hear busy tone, you can tell SDX to ring you
when the extension becomes free. Similarly, if you call an extension and
there is no answer, then you can tell SDX to call you back after that
extension is next used.
To request another extension to call back when freeTo request another extension to call back when free::
1. Dial extension and hear busy tone.
2. Press 22 and replace handset (if off hook).
You will be automatically called back when the extension becomes free:

You can make and receive calls whilst waiting for a call back.

1. Press the line key on the FT-5.
2. Field lamp shows Slow FlashSlow Flash (on hold) on your extension.
3. To return to the call press the line key again.
4. The field lamp shows Fast FlashFast Flash again.
Automatic System HoldAutomatic System Hold
If you are connected to an external line and you wish to answerIf you are connected to an external line and you wish to answer

1. Press the key indicating the incoming call (Medium FlashMedium Flash).
2. The connected line (Fast FlashFast Flash) is automatically placed on system
hold (Slow FlashSlow Flash) and you are connected to the new caller.

1. Press HH and replace handset.
2. To return to the call press and dial 9.9.
3. Lift the handset.
Transferring CallsTransferring Calls To transfer an external call to another extensionTo transfer an external call to another extension::
1. Press HH and dial the internal extension (announce call if necessary).
2. Press Ans/RlsAns/Rls or replace handset to transfer the call.

3. Press HH to return to caller.
If the call is transferred over a DPNSS network to a busy extension, you
may need to dial 33 before replacing the handset.
ConferencingConferencing You can set up a conference between an external line, another internal
extension and yourself or yourself and up to 30 other internal extensions.
To conference one call to anotherTo conference one call to another::
1. Press HH.
2. Dial the internal extension and wait until answered.
3. Press FunctionFunction.
4. Press ConfConf to establish a three party conference.
GroupGroup Group Working is used to ensure that there is always someone to answer
external calls. If you are a member of a group you can join or leave your
Group at will.
To join your answering groupTo join your answering group::
1. Press and dial 3.3.

When you are connected to an external line you can enter an AccountAccount
CodeCode of up to 12 digits which will be included on the billing record and
printed on the call log.
To enter the account codeTo enter the account code::
1. Dial the external number and press ##.
2. Dial 0101, press and enter the account code.
If the account code is entered incorrectlyIf the account code is entered incorrectly::
1. Press to delete Account CodeAccount Code and re-enter correct code.
You can only delete an incorrectly entered account code prior to dialling
the last digit.
Forced Account Code (Outgoing Calls Only)Forced Account Code (Outgoing Calls Only)
A terminal may be programmed by the System Manager to force a user
to enter an account code (up to 12 digits) before an external call can be
made.
To make an external call when terminal has been set up for forcedTo make an external call when terminal has been set up for forced

1. Dial 99. You will hear an intermittent tone.
2. Enter the account code. If dial tone is not returned, then press ##.
3. Then, when you hear dial tone, dial the required external number.

to enter a PIN number (up to 6 digits) before an external call can be
made.

1. While off-hook, press the associated key - you will hear busy tone
2. Press FunctionFunction.
3. Press Camp-onCamp-on to camp-on to extension or group. Do not hang-upDo not hang-up.
4. Line lamp remains on.on.
If the call is unanswered after the time-out period it is returned to the FT-5
with the line lamp On.On.
Loudspeaker MonitorLoudspeaker Monitor
An FT-5 TelephoneFT-5 Telephonehas a loudspeaker that is used when you choose to
set up a call while on-hook.
If during a call you are using the handset and you wish to listen overIf during a call you are using the handset and you wish to listen over
the loudspeakerthe loudspeaker::
1. Press FunctionFunction followed by SpeakerSpeaker. Do notnot replace handset.
This feature allows you to monitor (or listen to) calls only. It does not
allow conversation.

Programming Selection KeysProgramming Selection Keys
The 14 Selection Keys can be programmed to represent either lines,
extensions, groups of lines or groups of extensions.
To program the Selection KeysTo program the Selection Keys::
1. Lift the handset.
2. Press and dial 0.0.
3. Press the Selection Key to be programmed.
4. Enter 4-digit personal password (consult your System Manager).
5. Press to cancel any current designation.
6. Enter new designation as follows:
–Exchange Lines:Exchange Lines: Key the line number (e.g. 738).
–Extension:Extension: Key in the extension number.
–Group:Group: Key in the group number.
7. Press the next FT-5 Selection Key you wish to program.
8. Press to cancel any current designation.
9. Enter new designation and repeat sequence.
10.To leave programming mode, replace handset or press Ans/RlsAns/Rls.
Whilst programming, if a key is not pressed within a preset time, the
terminal will automatically leave the programming mode.
Storing External NumbersStoring External Numbers
To store an external number (up to 5) under the keypadTo store an external number (up to 5) under the keypad::
1. Take the FT-5 off-hook, press and dial 0.0.
2. Select store number from 0000 to 04.04.
3. Press to clear current value.
4. Enter external number (including 99 for an external line).
5. To leave programming mode, replace handset or press Ans/RlsAns/Rls.

Ringing ModeRinging Mode There are three ringing modes for the FT-5 TelephoneFT-5 Telephone which can be
selected for each line key. When an incoming call is signalled (lamp on
Medium FlashMedium Flash) the terminal can either ring continuously, given an
intermittent single burst or not ring at all.
To select the ringing modeTo select the ringing mode::
1. Press FunctionFunction.
2. Press selection key to be programmed.
3. Press OnOn for continuous ringing.

4. Press OffOff for no ring.

5. Press Int.Int. for intermittent single burst.
Changing From LD To MF SignallingChanging From LD To MF Signalling
If switchable trunks have been fitted and set to LD, changing from LD to
MF can be done, by selecting an outgoing line and dialling . Any digits
dialled after will be signalled in MF. Once switched to MF, the line will
only revert to LD when the outside line is released.
Lamp StatesLamp States FT-5 selection keys and lamps can be programmed to represent lines,
extensions or extension groups. The significance of the associated lamps
is as follows:
