Thank you for purchasing a Sealey Product. Manufactured to a high standard this product will, if used according to these instructions
and properly maintained, give you years of trouble free performance.

1. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
!WARNING! Ensure Health & Safety, local authority and general workshop practice regulations
are adhered to when using this equipment.
"Familiarise yourself with the applications, limitations and potential hazards of this spring compressor.
"Maintain the spring compressor in good condition. Replace or repair damaged parts. Use genuine
parts only. Unauthorised parts may be dangerous and will invalidate the warranty.
"Keep the work area clean, uncluttered and ensure there is adequate lighting.
!
WARNING! Wear approved safety eye protection (standard spectacles are not adequate).
"Keep hands and body clear of the work when operating the spring compressor.
"Maintain correct balance and footing. Ensure the floor is not slippery and wear non-slip shoes.
"Remove ill fitting clothes. Remove ties, watches, rings, other loose jewellery. Contain or tie back long hair.
"Wear appropriate protective clothing.
"Keep children and unauthorised persons away from the working area.

DANGER! Stop compressing the spring before it becomes coil bound. Exercise particular caution
when using air impact wrench. Failure to observe this rule may damage the shear pin.
"When the spring is released, ensure the spindle jaw does not contact the spring pan.
$DO NOT operate spring compressor if parts are damaged or missing as this may cause failure and/or
personal injury.
$DO NOT use compressor on coil springs which have a compressed load greater than
25,000N (2500kg).
$DO NOT use the spring compressor for a task it was not designed to perform.
$DO NOT allow untrained persons to use the spring compressor.
$DO NOT operate spring compressor if you are tired, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or intoxicating
medication.

common sense and caution are factors which cannot be built into this product, but must be
applied by the operator.
2. INTRODUCTION AND TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
2.1 2500kg Maximum loading. Heavy-duty, lightweight unit made from hi-tech steel alloy.
Supplied with one pair of yokes that will cover 90% of the car market. Safety yokes, with
polyurethane inserts for improved grip, are carefully shaped to prevent the coil spring from
bowing. Yoke brackets are adjustable to suit all types of springs, including conical. 1/2"Sq drive for
direct use with most air wrenches.
2.2 Applications: Alfa, Audi, BMW, Citroen, Daihatsu, Fiat, Ford, GM, Honda, Jaguar, Lada, Lancia,
Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Rover, Saab, Seat, Skoda, Subaru,
Suzuki, Toyota, Volvo, VW.

3.1. TO COMPRESS STRUT FITTED TO VEHICLE.
3.1.1. Put the jaws into position and engage them on the spring as far apart as possible
and in line with one another. Ensure the safety lips are correctly engaged.
3.1.2. Put the RE227 body into position as show in Fig 1, (A = MacPherson strut),
and engage the interlocks into the jaws.
3.1.3. Ensure that the jaws and the body are correctly aligned, see Fig 3.
3.1.4. Extend compressor by hand then turn the 1/2”Sq drive clockwise using
air or hand tools and compress the spring without allowing it to become coil
bound.
3.1.5. Remove spring when it is fully compressed and is free to rotate on the strut.
3.1.6. To decompress the spring, reverse the compression procedure.
3.2. TO COMPRESS STRUT REMOVED FROM VEHICLE.
3.2.1. Align the body mating interlocks, ensuring that they face in the correct
direction and engage the jaws.
3.2.2. To keep jaws from moving, extend the compressor using the 1/2”Sq drive.
Span as many spring coils as possible and ensure that the spring is
correctly seated in the jaws.
3.2.3. Turn the 1/2”Sq drive clockwise using air or hand tools to compress
the spring.
3.2.4. Observe end of stroke restrictions to keep the spring from becoming coil
bound.
4.1. Before each use check the compressor to ensure it is not damaged or worn. If suspect do not use the
unit, but contact your your local Sealey Dealer who will be able to advise you regarding repair kits and
spare parts.
4.2. Keep the compressor spindle lubricated. IMPORTANT: Use “Molycot GN” lubricant only.
4.3. Keep the compressor clean, and when not in use store in a safe, dry, childproof location.

!WARNING! Determine the outer diameter and the compressed load of the spring and check that the
compressor is suitable.
!WARNING! Do not compress the spring to an extent where the coil windings touch, Fig 2A.
!WARNING! Do not compress the spring to an extent where the jaws touch, Fig 2B.
"Ensure the jaws and the body of the compressor are correctly aligned at all times during spring
compression Fig 3A. For conical springs, the centre line of the spring should remain parallel to the
compressor body, Fig 3B.
"Secure the strut with a clamp, vice or other adequate holding device.
3.3. CONICAL AND BALL SPRINGS
3.3.1. When compressing a conical or ball spring you must remember that the body
of the compressor should be parallel with the centre of the spring, see fig.3.
Study the diagram below (Fig 4) to determine where to position the sliders.

This spring compressor has a built-in shear pin. If you apply an overloading force the
shear pin will break. Remove the broken pin and replace with a new shear pin before
removing the spring.
