Alwaysoperate
vehicle

neutral
or

Avoid
contact
of
hands
or
testleads
with
fan
blade,
fan
belt,
power

belt
andair
conditioner
belt.

riot
touch
hot
exhaust
manifold,
radiator,high-voltagespark
plugs
or8,
coilterminals.Whilesparkvoltages
arenot
normally
lethal,
an
involun-
taryjerk
ofthe
hands
may
cause
you
injury.
Avoid
high
enginespeeds
in
neutral
gear,
as
this
may
damage
the
engine.
The
gas
formedabove
the
electrolyte
while
a
battery
is
beingcharged
isex-
plosive.
Donot
smoke
or
permit
flame
or
spark
to
occur
near
a
bat-
tery
on
charge.
Neverpuncture
the
spark
plug
cables
to
hook
upa
timing
light
or
othertest
equipment.
Usethe
properadapter.
A
battery
is
capable
of
providingvery
high
currents.
Therefore,
reason-
able
caremust
be
exercised
when,
working
near
the
battery
to
prevent
shorting
it
out.
GENERAL
INFORMATION
•
Prope,r

of
an
automobileengine.Improperignition
timing
may
cause
overheating,
loss
of
power,
poor
acceleration
and
perform-
ance,
andmay
evenshorten
the
service
life
ofthe
engine.
Although
the
Model
244.
2117
timinglight
is
used
for
timing
the
engine
to
man-
ufacturer's
specifications,
it
should
be
remembered
that
timing
is
also
affected
by
the
dwell,
or
period
of
time
that
the
distributor
points
are
closed.
There-
fore,
a
dwellmetermust
be
used
tosetthe
dwell
to
manufacturer's
specifi-
cations
before
the
actualtiming
ofthe
engine
canbe
performed.
Trie
following
instructions
are
intended
asa
generalguide
to
properignition
timing.
For
more
specific
information,
the
operator
should
always
refer
to
the
manufacturer's
specifications
and
test
procedures.
NOTE:
The
Model
244.211?
timinglight
canbe
used
on
magnetosystems
by
connecting
the
leads
as
follows:
1.
Connect
redand
blackleads
toan
external
6 or12
volt
battery,
observing
proper
polarity(redclip
to
positive
terminal,
black
clip
to
negativeterminal).
2.
Connect
a
jumperwire
between
the
negative
post
ofthe
battery
and
the
magnetosystem
ground.
3.
Connect
the
timinglighthigh-tensionlead
totheNo,1
spark
plug.

OPERATION
ENGINE
TIMING
CHECK
With
engine
stopped,
connect
the
tim-
ing
light
as
shown.
NOTE:
Ifthe
engine
is
running,
al-
ways
make
connection
first
to
the
battery
and
then
tothe
spark
plug.
When
discon-
necting,
alwaysremove
the
spark
plug
lead
first.
Allow
engine
to
warm
up.
Timing
must
be
done
at
engine
speed
specified
by
manufacturer.
If
neces-
sary,
use
a
tachometer
toset
idle
RPM.

servetiming
mark.

TIMING
ADJUSTMENT
1.
Loosen
distributor
hold-downbolt.
Rotate
the
distributor
body
inthe
di-
rectionrequired
to
align
timing
mark.
Tighten
distributor
hold-down
bolt
and
recheck
timing.

1.
Withvacuumadvance
line
disconnected
and
engine
at
idle
KPM,
noteposition
of
timing
mark.
2.
Gradually
increase
engine
speed.
3.
The
timing
mark
shouldmoveopposite
to
the
direction
of
enginerotation
to
advance
spark.

VACUUMADVANCE
CHECK
1.
Operate
engine
at
approximately1500
RPM.
2.
Reconnect
vacuum
advance
line
tothe
distributor
and
observemovement
of
timing
mark.
3.
The
timing
mark
shouldmoveopposite
tothe
direction
o£
enginerotation
to
advance
the
spark,
and
will
appear
be-
yond
the
range
of
the
indicator.
IGNITION
SYSTEM
FAULTS
If
the
spark
plug
to
which
the
timinglight
is
connected
isnot
firing
forany
reason,
the
timing
light
will
not
flash.
Ifthe
spark
plug
gapissettoo
wide,
the
light
will
op-
erate,
but
arcing
ofthe
safety
gap
within
the
timing
lightmay
be
heard
andthe
spark
plugmaymisfire.
This
is
normal
and
does
no
harm.
Ifthe
gaps
ofthe
other
spark
plugs
inthe
engine
areset
extremely
wide
orifthe
insulation
onthe
otherspark
plug
cables
is
leaky,
the
timinglight
may
double
flash
or
miss.
Multipleflashing
can
also
be
caused
bythe
timinglighthigh-tension
lead
lying
on,
or-close
to,the
otherspark
plug
wires.
