Th s manual w ll ntroduce you to the Sharp EL-512 sc ent f c calculator.
Some sect ons n th s manual may be d v ded nto bas c and advanced mater al. The
advanced mater al s labeled "supplementary." The supplementary sect ons may be skpped
w thout hamper ng your ab l ty to operate the calculator. You may w sh to return to the
supplementary sect ons as your sk ll n operat ng the EL-512 ncreases.
OPERATIONAL NOTES
S nce the l qu d crystal d splay s made of glass material, treat the calculator w th
care. Do not put your "EL-512" n your back pocket as t may be damaged when
you s t down.

To nsure trouble-free operat on of your SHARP calculator, we recommend the follow ng:
1. The calculator should be kept n areas free from extreme temperature changes mo sture'
and dust.
Dur ng warm weather, veh cles left n d rect sun l ght are subject to h gh temperature
bu ld up.
Prolonged exposure to h gh temperature may cause damage to your calculator.
2. A soft, dry cloth should be used to clean the calculator. Do not use solvents or a wet
cloth.
3. If the calculator w ll not be operated for an extended per od of t me, remove the bat
ter es to avo d poss ble damage caused by battery leakage.
4. If servce of your calculator s requ red, use only an author zed SHARP serv ce center.

Now, EL-512 has solved the problem. S mply enter a number n base 16 or 10, the
EL-512 w ll then g ve you the answer nstantly.

TURNING THE POWER ON POWER —|
ON
To turn the power on press the red (Sra) key. To turn the power off press the [off] key.
Sharp calculator has the A.P.O. (Automat c Power OFF). If the calculator s turned on n
error, or no calculat on s performed, the calculator w ll turn tself off after about n ne
m nutes, sav ng battery power. To turn the EL-512 back on press the !C-CEI key.
To float ng dec mal system, depress the |2ndF] and I • I keys.

CLEARING

An ncorrectly entered number can be replaced as long as the number has not already been
followed by a "funct on key."

To clear the latest entry press the @ key once. If the @ key s pressed tw ce, the
calculator w ll be completely cleared except for mater al n memory. All prev ous calcu

3. Use of parenthes s
The parentheses keys are needed to cluster together a ser es of operat ons when t s
necessary to overr de the pr or ty system of algebra. When parentheses are n use on the
EL-512 the symbol ( ) w ll appear n the d splay.
Calculat ons n parentheses have pr or ty over other calculat ons. Parentheses can be
used up to 15 t mes n a s ngle level. Calculat ons w th n the nner-most set of paren
theses w ll be calculated f rst.

EL-512 has many preprogrammed funct ons, but the space ava lable on the keys t(

The yellow key n the upper left of the calculator marked "2nd F" must be used t(
