Introduction 1
1.1 Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this manual is to provide support for the customer when installing, maintaining
and servicing the Optics Housing CD 6 for the LDS 6 laser gas analyzer. This manual describes the
preparations, installation and maintenance. It also speci󹪝es the environmental conditions and
space requirements.
How to use this manual
All instructions in this manual are marked with the symbol to the left. In "Preparations for
installation" and "Installation guidelines" the instructions shall be followed in given order. The
preparation checklist shall be used to check that all has been prepared and considered at the
measurement site before start of installation.
Chapter overview
The operating manual begins with a description of the Optics Housing CD 6. In the chapter
"Technical description" all parts of the Optics Housing CD 6 are described.
Before the Optics Housing CD 6 can be installed there are a few things that must be prepared at
the measuring site. For example, 󹪞anges have to be welded into the measuring site and
provisions for purging the Optics Housing CD 6 must be installed. This is described in the chapter
"Preparations for installation".
The chapter "Installation guidelines" gives instructions for the installation of Optics Housing CD
6 and cables.
At the end of the manual there are some Appendices containing reference documents. These
documents provide information such as ATEX set-up and instructions for purging.

components of the system, i.e. to the central unit, the barrier box, the optics housings, and
the connections.
This device left the factory in good working condition. In order to maintain this status and to
ensure safe operation of the device, observe these instructions and all the speci󹪝cations relevant
to safety.
Observe the information and symbols on the device. Do not remove any information or symbols
from the device. Always keep the information and symbols in a completely legible state.
WARNING
Loss of explosion protection properties
The test certi󹪝cate for your explosion-proof device only applies to the original con󹪝guration as
well as to the installation and connection according to the switching and piping plans of
Siemens. If one or more components are changed, the explosion protection properties of your
device are abolished.

Risk to personnel, system and environment can result from modi󹪝cations to the device,
particularly in hazardous areas.

If the device or its components have already been operated in non-intrinsically safe circuits or
the electrical speci󹪝cations have not been observed, the safety of the device is no longer
ensured for use in hazardous areas. There is a risk of explosion.
• Connect the device with type of protection "Intrinsic safety" solely to an intrinsically safe
circuit.
• Observe the speci󹪝cations for the electrical data on the certi󹪝cate and/or in Technical
speci󹪝cation (Page 37).
2.1 Requirements for special applications
Due to the large number of possible applications, each detail of the described device versions for
each possible scenario during commissioning, operation, maintenance or operation in systems
cannot be considered in the instructions. If you need additional information not covered by
these instructions, contact your local Siemens o󹪟ce or company representative.
Note
Operation under special ambient conditions
We highly recommend that you contact your Siemens representative or our application
department before you operate the device under special ambient conditions as can be
encountered in nuclear power plants or when the device is used for research and development
purposes.
2.2 Safety information
The device complies with the applicable safety standards. If the handling instructions and safety
information are observed, no dangers exist when using the device which could endanger the
health of personnel or result in damage to property.

WARNING
Improper power supply
Observe the speci󹪝cations of the examination certi󹪝cate valid in your country.
Check whether the available power supply is compliant with the power supply speci󹪝ed on the
nameplate and speci󹪝ed in the examination certi󹪝cate valid in your country.
WARNING
Opening device in energized state
Danger of explosion in areas subject to explosion hazard.
Only open the device in a de-energized state.
• Check prior to commissioning that the cover, cover locks, and cable inlets are assembled in
accordance with the directives.
Exception: Devices having the type of protection "Intrinsic safety Ex i" may also be opened
in an energized state in dust-free hazardous areas when all necessary measures for
explosion protection are ensured.
Note
The equipment does not provide 500 V insulation between intrinsically safe circuits and ground
as required by EN/IEC 60079-11 Clause 6.3.13.
Materials in the optics housings
WARNING
Impact or friction of device enclosure
The device enclosure contains aluminum and is considered to constitute a potential risk of
ignition by impact or friction.
• Take precautions to avoid any ignition hazard caused by impact or friction due to the content
of light metals in the optics housings.
The optics housing (transmitter and receiver) is built mainly using stainless or surface treated
steel and an aluminum alloy (content of aluminum >85 %; content of magnesium, titanium and
zirconium <0.7 %) and an O ring made of FKM or FFKM.

Pressure safety
For pressure speci󹪝cations refer to the Technical speci󹪝cation (Page 37).
WARNING
Damage to operating sta󹪜
Whenever the optics housings heads are to be opened or disconnected from the process
interface or the gas tubing make sure that any overpressure in the optics housings heads is
removed prior to any work. Opening optics housings under overpressure may result in
dangerous injuries to the operator.
WARNING
Damage caused corrosive by process gas
When the optics housing purging is connected to the process purging, it may be necessary to
use non-return valves to ensure no process gas can enter the purging gas line in the event of
failure of the purging gas supply. This applies especially in the case of cascaded process and
optics housing purging where there is otherwise the danger that, for example, corrosive
process gases could enter the optics housing enclosure.
WARNING
Damaged optics
The high pressure-proof glass in the optics housings must not be subject to any mechanical
impact which might cause damage to the glass (scratch, gash etc.). Only use a soft cloth for
cleaning of the glass. Make sure that it is safe to dismount the optics housing before cleaning.
WARNING
Malfunction of sealing
Make sure all plugs and tube 󹪝ttings are sealed with the enclosed pipe thread sealant.
Instructions given on the sealant tube must be carefully followed.
Laser safety
CAUTION
Change of laser class
The analyzer is classi󹪝ed as a class 1 laser product. The emitted laser light is invisible (near
infrared) and not hazardous to the unprotected eye. The analyzer has warning labels at
appropriate positions according to EN 60825-1:2014.

Laser safety
The analyzer is classi󹪝ed as a class 1 laser product. The emit‐
ted laser light is invisible (near infrared) and not hazardous to
the unprotected eye. The analyzer has warning labels at ap‐
propriate positions according to EN 60825-1.
WARNING
Maintenance during continued operation in a hazardous area
There is a risk of explosion when carrying out repairs and maintenance on the device in a
hazardous area.
• Isolate the device from power.

• Ensure that the atmosphere is explosion-free (hot work permit).
2.3 Quali󹪝ed personnel for hazardous area applications
Quali󹪝ed personnel for hazardous area applications
Persons who install, connect, commission, operate, and service the device in a hazardous area
must have the following speci󹪝c quali󹪝cations:
• They are authorized, trained or instructed in operating and maintaining devices and systems
according to the safety regulations for electrical circuits, high pressures, aggressive, and
hazardous media.
• They are authorized, trained, or instructed in carrying out work on electrical circuits for
hazardous systems.
• They are trained or instructed in maintenance and use of appropriate safety equipment
according to the pertinent safety regulations.
2.4 Laws and directives
Observe the safety rules, provisions and laws applicable in your country during connection,
assembly and operation. These include, for example:
• National Electrical Code (NEC - NFPA 70) (USA)
• Canadian Electrical Code (CEC Part I) (Canada)

3.1 Flanges
3.1.1 Flange installation requirements
Before the gas analyzer and its optics housings can be used, a pair of process 󹪞anges should be
installed at the measurement site. The 󹪞anges must be installed at a safe and accessible position
to make installation and service easy to accomplish.
The 󹪞anges should be welded to the wall of the furnace or funnel as shown in the 󹪝gure below.
The 󹪞ange must protrude at least 100 mm (4") from the wall and 0-30 mm (0-1.2") into the
furnace/funnel.

There are applications where furnace walls move due to variations in temperature. If the furnace
walls move the optics housings will be miss-aligned and the measurement interrupted. To
overcome this, the Optics Housing CD 6 can be 󹪝xed to a girder or other structure that is not
in󹪞uenced by the temperature and the 󹪞exible metal tube is 󹪝tted between the process 󹪞ange
and the optics housing 󹪞ange. Remember that the 󹪞anges 󹪝tted for the optics housings must not
deviate more than ±2°.
Note
It is very important that the 󹪞anges are mounted so that they are aligned. Otherwise the
measurements will not be correct.

3.1.2 Installation of 󹪞anges
Make sure there is enough room for the Optics Housing CD 6. Especially take into consideration
that it should be easy to mount or dismount and that the optics housings lid should be able to
open fully. Safe working space around the optics housings are also needed, guardrails, ladders,
etc. The 󹪝gure below illustrates the process for installation of 󹪞anges.
Flange alignment deviation
When both 󹪞ange-tubes are permanently 󹪝xed the deviation from the theoretical optical path
must not exceed ±2°. This is because the alignment 󹪞anges can be adjusted maximum ±2°. See
the 󹪝gure below.

The required precision of the 󹪞ange alignment
The aim should always be to achieve the best possible alignment of the 󹪞anges, i.e. to get the
center of the dot as close as possible to the center of the crosshair on the alignment tool. This
will allow for small changes, for example caused by thermal movement later on.
For a normal installation using standard 400 mm purging tubes the alignment is usually good
enough if the center of the dot is within 3 mm from the center. The lines closest to the center of
the crosshair are about 3 mm from the center.
Note
If long purging tubes will be used, a greater e󹪜ort should be made to align the 󹪞anges perfectly.
Depending on the diameter and length of the stubs the possibility to align the optics housings
is more restricted when long purging tubes are used.

3.1.3 Measurement of path length
It is recommended that the open end of the purging tubes be the reference points from which
the path length is determined. When the 󹪞anges are permanently installed, measure the
distance between the outside of the 󹪞anges with an accuracy of at least ±10 mm (±0.4"). This
distance is used to calculate the path length by subtracting the length of the 󹪞ange tubes and
will later be used in the analyzer when it calculates the gas concentration. In the area where the
purging gas and the measurement gas are mixed there will be a zone of uncertainty. This zone
will depend on the purging 󹪞ow and the 󹪞ow of the measurement gas.
3.2 Optics Housing CD 6 installation requirements
The following requirements must be considered before installing the optics housings at the
measurement site.
For systems with purging, do not install the optics housings without access to purging air or
steam. Be sure to have su󹪟cient space around the optics housings, to ensure easy service. There
must be enough space to enable removing of the optics housing lids and adjustment of the
optics housings.

3.3 The hybrid and sensor connection cables
3.3.1 Cable installation requirements
The following requirements must be considered before installing the cables at the measurement
site.
The hybrid cables should be installed in a way that protects them from mechanical wear such as
sharp edges or moving parts. Operating temperature for the cables is -40 to +80°C (-40 to +
176°F). Installation temperature for the cables is -20 to +80°C (-4 to + 176°F). These
temperatures refer to both ambient temperature and any parts the cables come in contact with.
Always protect the single mode 󹪝ber (E2000 connector with green color) from dust. Cables are
supplied with a protective tube at each end and inside these a plastic protective cap for the single
mode 󹪝ber.
CAUTION
DO NOT remove the protective tube until the cable is installed and ready to be connected to LDS
6 and Optics Housing CD6. DO NOT remove the plastic protective cap until the cable is routed
inside the LDS 6/Optics Housing CD 6. The protective tubes should only be removed by
authorized personnel.

The bending radius of the cable may never be smaller than 100 mm (4"). If clamps are used there
must be a minimum of 0.5 mm (0.02") clearance between cable and clamp or use rubber coated
clamps. Take extra care of hybrid cables for HCl systems since the cables are very sensitive due
to the wavelength used in these systems. The 󹪝gure below shows the pre-requisites for
installation of the cables.

3.3.2 Identi󹪝cation of cables
All cables are marked with identi󹪝cation tags, as follows:
HXXXA or HXXXB, where H means Hybrid cable, is used for all types of systems. XXX is the serial
number for the cable and A/B depends on the direction in which the cable is oriented. Before
cables are shipped from Siemens they are tested in both directions A to B and B to A. It does not
matter which way the cable is installed. Hybrid cables are installed between the LDS 6 and the
transmitter optics housing.
LXXX are sensor connection cables and are the same for all systems. Sensor connection cables
are installed between the transmitter optics housing and the receiver optics housing.
CAUTION
Make sure the operating and installation temperatures for the hybrid and sensor connection
cables are not exceeded.

3.4 Check list
Go through the following points before beginning the installation of the LDS 6 laser gas analyzer
to make sure all preparations are completed.
• The 󹪞anges shall be welded to the wall of the furnace or funnel and properly aligned from
both sides.
• Make sure that the positions of the 󹪞anges are stable. The 󹪞anges 󹪝tted for the optics
housings must not deviate more than ±2°.
• Make sure that the 󹪞anges protrude at least 100 mm (4") from the wall and 0-30 mm (0-1.2")
into the furnace or funnel.
• There must be enough room for the optics housings to allow easy access for maintenance
and service.
• Make sure the path length is measured properly.
• Make sure that the environment where the central unit is to be installed has the right
temperature conditions.
• Make sure there is enough space to allow free air󹪞ow around the central unit (500 mm/20"
behind, 50 mm/2" above and 30 mm/1.2" below).
• Make sure the operating and installation temperatures for the hybrid and sensor connection
cables are not exceeded.
• Make sure the process 󹪞ange has an inner diameter which allows the purging tube to be
adjusted ±2 deg. (The outer diameter is 44.5 mm for the 400 mm purging tube and 54 mm
for the 800 and 1200 mm purging tubes).

4.1 Installation
This chapter provides instructions for the installation of the LDS 6, Optics Housing CD 6 and its
cables. The 󹪝gure below shows the principle set-up of the LDS 6 central unit, optics housings and
cables.

Note
Do not install the optics housings unless the purging media is accessible (for optics housings that
require purging). Never leave a optics housing without purging since the wedge optics is easily
damaged.
At installation of the cross duct optics housing, the 󹪝ber end and the photo-detector have to be
aligned to the optical axis of the optics housing pair. Note that each optics housing has an optical
axis of its own which is its axis of symmetry. Normally the process 󹪞anges are mounted with an
angle error. The optics housings are however, equipped with a 󹪞ange pair with a spherical
interface. This is used when the optics housing pair is aligned to each other. In this way an angle
error of up to ±2° on each side can be adjusted for.
Installation of optics housings
1. Check that the 󹪞anges are installed properly, according to the instructions earlier in this
manual.
2. Mount the optics housings, receiver and transmitter, with gaskets on the 󹪞anges and cross
tighten the bolts.

4.2 Electrical connections
Installation of transmitter optics housing
Install the cables, hybrid and sensor connection cable, at the transmitter optics housing
according to Figure 3.2. Cables are 󹪝xed in the optics housing with gaskets. Always use lubricant
on the gaskets before installing, otherwise these will be very di󹪟cult to remove later. Multi-
mode 󹪝ber (SMA connector) and 24 V are just connected straight through to the receiver.
Note
Always protect the single-mode 󹪝ber (E2000 connector) from dust. Do not remove the plastic
vial until the cable is 󹪝rmly fastened in the optics housing.

Installation of receiver optics housing
Install the sensor connection cable in the receiver optics housing. Cables are 󹪝xed with gaskets.
Always use lubricant on the gaskets before installing, otherwise they will be very di󹪟cult to
remove later.
Connect the multi-mode 󹪝ber to the sensor-board as shown below.

4.3 Alignment
Mount the optics housings, receiver and transmitter, with gaskets on the 󹪞anges and cross
tighten the bolts.
When mounting the optics housings the large springs of the alignment 󹪞anges must be located
in the lower section of the 󹪞ange. All purging outlets must face downwards.
