This chapter describes the instructions that guide you through the proper hardware installation of
your 11Mbps Wireless LANCFCard for Pocket PC 2002 and Windows CE 3.0 operating
system.

Inorder to use the 11Mbps Wireless LANCF Card, your computer must be equipped with the

2-2 Before Getting Started
Before installingthe driver and utilityof the Wireless LANCF Card for the Pocket
PC/Handheld PC, you need to first establish a connection between hostPC and PDAdevice with
Microsoft Active Sync. Instructions are as follows:

Step 1: Installthe MicrosoftActive Sync program that camewith your PDA ProductCD.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Active Sync on the host computer.
Step 2: Upon completion of installation, establish an ActiveSync connection between the host
computer and the Pocket PC usingaserial cable, aUSB cable, or an infrared link. (Refer to
your PocketPC manual for instructions. A“Get Connected “messagewillpop-up. Click
Next to proceed.

Step 3: The ActiveSync willstartlookingfor your Pocket PC/Handheld PC to get connected.
Step 4: Once the connection has been made, you will see the “connected”messageshown as
belowfigure.

2-3 Install the Setup Utility
Step 1: After successfullyforming aconnection between host PC and PDA device with
ActiveSync Program, insert the CD-ROM intothe CD-ROM drive and run the setup utility
(nb825.exe)for Windows CE operatingsystem. The InstallShield Wizard willlaunch
automatically.Click Next to continue.
Step 2: An InstallShield Wizard windowappears. Click Next to proceed.

Step 3: Click YES when prompted to installthe CompactFlash Card driver and utilityinthe
default application install directory.
Step 4: Follow on-screen instructions to installthe Setup Utility.Click Finish to complete
the installation.

Step 1: Insertthe 11Mbps Wireless LAN CF Card into the CF sloton your PDA. The PDA
willauto-detectthe Wireless LANCF Card and automaticallyinstallthe correspondingdriver
and utility.
Step 2: Assignan IPaddress to your Wireless LAN CF Card. You mayeither setthe
Wireless LANCFCard to obtain an IPaddress fromyour DHCP server, or to be assigned with a
fixed IP address.
Step 3: Resetyour PDA.
Upon completion of installation, the Wireless LANCFCard willstart to look for an Access
Point withGreen LED blinking.The Green LED willstaysteadyonce the Wireless LANCF
Card successfullyassociates with an Access Point.To configure the Wireless LAN CFCard
please proceed to the next chapter.

3-1 Using Wireless LAN Utility Under Pocket/Handheld PC
The 11Mbps Wireless LAN CF Card is a ready-to-use device. Its defaultsettingsperform for a
typical Infrastructure Wireless LAN.Simplyinstall the Wireless LAN CF Card onto your
computer and itis readytouse. Inspecial situations however, you mayadjust configuration
settingsdependingon howyou wouldlike to manageyour wireless network. The Wireless
LAN Utilityprovides you an easyinterface to make configuration changes and perform
user-level diagnostics on your Wireless LAN CF Card.
Step 1: Go to Start --> Settings.Goto the System tab, and click the “
Wireless LAN
Setting”icon.

A configuration window appears. The Wireless LANUtilityprovides the 5 followingitems for
you to configure and monitor the 11Mbps Wireless LANCF Card.
Status
The Status tab displays the current status of the Wireless LAN CF Card.
Adapter - Displays the name of the Wireless LANCF Card.
Firmware - Displays the firmware version of your Wireless LAN CF Card.
Domain - The regulated operatingfrequencyper country.
Channel - Displays the current channel that the Wireless LANCF Card is using.
MAC Address - It is a hardware identification number that distinguishes the unit fromothers.
Sync to AP - Displays the ESSID of the Access Point thatthe Wireless LANCF Card associates
with.
BSSID - ShowsMACAddress of the Access Point that the Wireless LAN CFCard associates
with.
Link Quality - Link qualitymonitors the qualityof the data transmission between the Wireless
LAN CF Card and an Access Point.
Signal Level - Thisbar graph displayssignal strength as reported bythe radio, averaged over all
frames that are received fromthe Access Point.

Configuration
The Configuration tab contains several fields where the currentparameters of the Wireless
LAN CF Card can be viewed and changed. You willsee current configuration information in
terms of ESSID,Network Type, Power SavingMode and TxRate. Upon modification of
parameters for the Wireless LANCF Card, click the Apply button to make the changes take
effect.
ESSID
The ESSID isan unique IDgiven tothe Access Point.Wireless clients associatingtoAccess
Points must have the same ESSID. The defaultvalue Auto Detect means when the Wireless
LAN CF Card startsto work, itwill associatewithanyAccess Pointthat gives the fastest
response. You mayalso enter aspecific ESSID(Access Point) you desire to connectwith. It
is recommended that you specifyan ESSID for your Wireless LANCF Card. This willprevent
your computer from unintentionallyconnectingtoadifferentwireless network. The ESSID
can be set up to 32 characters and is case sensitive.
Network Type
There are3network types for the 11Mbps Wireless LANPC Card tooperate. Ifyou need to
access companynetwork or Internetvia Access Point, select “Infrastructure”.To set up a
group of wireless stations for file and printer sharing,select “Ad-Hoc”or “802.11 Ad-Hoc”
(withoutAccess Point). If Ad-Hoc (without access point) is selected, you need to set wireless
stations with the samechannel.For 802.11 Ad-Hoc,the sameESSID are required to the
wireless stations.

Power Saving Mode
The Power Saving Mode option is designed to conserve batterylife of you computer. When
the Power SavingMode is activated byselectingthe Enable button, your 11Mbps Wireless
LAN CF Card will go into sleep mode to minimize power consumption.
Note: When power savingmode is enabled, the Access Pointsyou use need to
support power savingas well so that the communication can be established.
TX Rate
The 11Mbps Wireless LAN CF Card provides various data rateoptions for you to select. Data
rates options include Auto, 1Mbps, 2Mbps, 1M/2Mbps, 5.5Mbps,and 11Mbps.Inmost
networkingscenarios, you will see that the factory-set default“
Auto”willprove the most
efficient. This settingwill allow your 11Mbps Wireless LANCF Card to operate atthe
maximumdata rate. When the communications qualitydrops belowacertainlevel,the
Wireless LANCF Card willautomaticallyswitch to alower data rate. Transmission at lower
dataspeed is usuallymore reliable. However, when the communications qualityimproves
again, the Wireless LANCFCard will graduallyincrease the data rateagain, until it has reached
the highest available transmitrate.

Similar to PingCommand, this tool allows you to point-to-pointdata transmission quality
between twostations. Byentering IP address of another station and set the timeout and
packet size, you maycheck whether the communication has been made successfullyor not.

Security
To preventunauthorized wireless stations fromaccessingdata transmitted over the network, the
11Mbps Wireless LAN CFCard offers highlysecure data encryption, known as WEP (Wired
Equivalent Privacy). Ifyou desire touse WEP encryption to secure your data, please selectthe
Enable check boxand setthe followingvalues.
Ø There are two types of WEPKey Length described as follows:
40 Bit –Requires wireless stations to use dataencryption with 40 Bitalgorithm when
communicatingwith the Access Point also with WEP 40 enabled.
128 Bit –Allowswireless clientstocommunicate with the Access Point with data 128 Bit
encryption algorithm.

Ø WEPKey Type offers two methods to set the WEP keys, as described below:
Create Encryption Keys by Using a Passphrase
Step 1. To create encryption keysbyusingapassphrase, pulldown the WEPKey Type
and select Passphrase.
Step 2. Type acharacter string in the Key inthe phrase to generate keys field, then click
OK.As you type, the utilityuses an algorithm to generate 4 keys automatically.
