Introduction
You can use the Walkman™ player to listen to music, audio books and podcasts. You can
use Sony Ericsson Media Manager to transfer content between your phone and a
computer. You can also extract audio tracks from CDs and transfer them to your phone.
Installing Sony Ericsson Media
Manager
You can install the Sony Ericsson Media Manager software from the Sony Ericsson PC
Suite CD that comes with your phone or you can download it from
www.sonyericsson.com/support.
Required operating systems
To use the software included on the CD, you need one of the these operating systems:
•Microsoft® Windows Vista™ 32 bit or 64 bit versions of: Ultimate, Enterprise, Business,
Home Premium or Home Basic
•Microsoft® Windows® XP (Pro or Home), Service Pack 2 or higher
Installing from the CD
To install Sony Ericsson Media Manager from the CD
1Turn on your computer and insert the CD. The CD starts automatically and the
installation window opens.
2Select a language and click OK.
3Click Install Sony Ericsson Media Manager and follow the instructions.
Downloading from the Web and installing
To download the latest version of Sony Ericsson Media Manager
1In your Internet browser, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support.
2Select a region and country.
3Select Software downloads.
4Select a phone from the list.
5Select Read more and download under Media Manager.
6Select Download now and save the file to your computer.
To install Sony Ericsson Media Manager from the downloaded file
1Double-click the downloaded Sony Ericsson Media Manager file.
2Installation wizard: To continue the installation, click Next.
3Read and accept the licence agreement, then click Next.
4To install to the default folder, click Next.
5To begin the installation, click Install.
6To exit the wizard, click Finish.
Connecting using a USB cable
You can connect your phone to a computer using a USB cable compatible with your phone.

To connect your phone to a computer using a USB cable
1Connect a USB cable to your phone and the computer.
2Computer: If the Found New Hardware Wizard appears, click Cancel to exit the
wizard.
3Phone: Select Media transfer.
4Computer: Your phone memory is added as a removable disk in Windows®
Explorer.
5Computer: If a dialogue box asks what to do with the files on the removable disk,
select Take no action.
If your phone has a memory card, this is also added as a removable disk in Windows® Explorer.
Transferring content
To connect a USB cable, see Connecting using a USB cable on page 4.
To transfer content using Sony Ericsson Media Manager
1Connect the phone to a computer with a USB cable supported by your phone.
2Computer: Start/Programs/Sony Ericsson/Sony Ericsson Media Manager.
3Phone: Select Media transfer.
4Computer: Select Portable device and click OK.
5Wait until the phone appears in Sony Ericsson Media Manager.
6Move files between your phone and the computer in Sony Ericsson Media
Manager.
Do not remove the USB cable from your phone or computer during transfer, as this may corrupt
the memory card or the phone memory.
For details on transferring music, click in the top right corner of the Sony Ericsson Media
Manager window.
Accessing music in your phone
You can access your music from Media and File manager. For more information about
how to handle content in File manager, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support and
download the Managing content Feature guide.
To access media
•From standby select Menu > Media.
To navigate your media
1From standby select Menu > Media.
2Scroll to a menu item and press .

Shake control
To switch track
•When music is playing, press and hold down and move the phone to the right
with a flick of your wrist to go to the next track. To go to the previous track, use the
same action to the left.
To shuffle tracks
•When music is playing, press and hold down and shake your phone.
To change the volume
1When music is playing, hold the phone out in front of you facing upwards.
2Press and hold down and bend your arm upwards towards you to increase the
volume. To decrease the volume, repeat the action in the opposite direction.

Clear stereo and clear bass
Clear stereo and clear bass are turned on when you set the equaliser manually.
To set the equaliser manually
1Press .
2Select Options > Settings > Equaliser.
3Make sure you are in Manual view. If you are not, select Manual.
4To scroll between the frequency bands, press or .
5To change the value for a selected frequency band, press or .
6To go back to the player view, select Done.
To turn on clear stereo and clear bass using equaliser presets
1Press .
2Select Options > Settings > Equaliser.
3Make sure you are in Preset view. If you are not, select Preset.
4To scroll between the presets, press or .
5Select any of the presets, except Normal.
Walkman™ player options
The following Options may be available when you listen to music:
•My music – browse your music tracks.
•Settings
•Play mode – select Shuffle to play tracks randomly in a playlist or Loop to restart a
playlist after the last track ends.
•Equaliser – change the settings of the treble and bass when playing a track.
•Visualisations – change visualisation to accompany your tracks.
•Stereo widening – change the output sound to enhance the stereo experience.
•Landscape – change the orientation of the screen to landscape (if available).
•Portrait – change the orientation of the screen to portrait (if available).
•File
•Send – send a track using an available transfer method.
•Information – view information about a track you have selected.
•Delete – remove tracks. Tracks are only removed from the current playlist.
•Save playlist – save a play queue to a new playlist.
•Minimise – minimise the Walkman™ player and return to standby with music still playing.
Browsing your music
You can browse for tracks by category:
•Artists – list tracks by artist.
•Albums – list tracks by album.
•Tracks – list all music tracks.
•Playlists – create your own lists of tracks and access playlists that have been created
automatically, based on your selections.
•SensMe™ – list tracks by mood.
•Genre – list music by genre.
•Year – list tracks by year.
•Audio books – list audio books you have transferred from your computer.
•Podcasts – list all podcasts.
For SensMe™ to work, the tracks need to be analysed and transferred to your phone using
Sony Ericsson Media Manager. For information on how to analyse your music, click in the top
right corner of the Sony Ericsson Media Manager window.
Browsing options
The following Options may be available when you browse your music:
•Menu order – show or hide categories.

•Resume – start playing the track you last listened to. If music is playing, Resume takes
you back to the player view.
•Information – view information about a track you have selected.
•Delete – delete a track from the phone.
•Send – send a track using an available transfer method.
•Queue – add a track to the play queue.
For playlist options, see Playlist options on page 9.
Playlists
You can create playlists to organise your music. You can add tracks to more than one
playlist. You can also add folders to a playlist. All tracks in a folder are then added to the
playlist. It may take a few minutes for the phone to create a playlist.
Deleting a playlist, or a track from a playlist, does not delete the track from the memory,
just the reference to the track in that list.
To create a playlist
1From standby select Menu > Media > Music > Playlists.
2Scroll to New playlist and select Add.
3Enter a name and select OK.
4For each track you want to add, scroll to the track and select Mark.
5Select Add to add the marked tracks to the playlist.
To add tracks to a playlist
1From standby select Menu > Media > Music > Playlists.
2Select a playlist.
3Scroll to Add music and select Add.
4For each track you want to add, scroll to the track and select Mark.
5Select Add to add the marked tracks to the playlist.
To delete a track from a playlist
1From standby select Menu > Media > Music > Playlists.
2Select a playlist.
3Scroll to a track and press .
To delete a playlist
1From standby select Menu > Media > Music > Playlists.
2Scroll to a playlist and press .
Playlist options
The following Options may be available:
•Add music – add tracks or folders to the playlist.
•Delete –delete a playlist or a track from a playlist. Only the reference to the track is removed
and not the track itself. The tracks are still listed in File manager.
•Information – view information about a track you have selected.
•Rename – rename a playlist. You can only rename user-created playlists.
•Resume – start playing the track you last listened to. If music is playing, Resume takes
you back to the player view.
•Send – send a track using an available transfer method.
•Queue – add a track to the play queue.

SensMe™
With SensMe™ you can create playlists in two ways, by mood or from all the tracks in your
phone. By mood, you first use Sony Ericsson Media Manager to analyse and transfer tracks
to your phone. Information such as mood, tempo and chords is then added. The tracks
are displayed as dots on a map with two axes. In the All view, all the tracks in your phone
are placed randomly on the map. You can create a playlist by selecting an area of tracks.
For information on how to analyse your music, click in the top right corner of the
Sony Ericsson Media Manager window.
To create a playlist by mood
1Select Menu > Media > Music.
2Scroll to SensMe™ and select Open.
3Press , , or .
4Make sure you are in Mood view. If you are not, select Mood.
5To preview different tracks, press , , or .
6To choose an area of tracks, select Add and press or .
7To create the playlist and play it in the Walkman™ player, select Create.
8Select Options > Save playlist.
9Enter a name and select OK.
To create a playlist from All view
1Select Menu > Media > Music.
2Scroll to SensMe™ and select Open.
3Press , , or .
4Make sure you are in All view. If you are not, select All.
5To preview different tracks, press , , or .
6To choose an area of tracks, select Add and press or .
7To create the playlist and play it in the Walkman™ player, select Create.
8Select Options > Save playlist.
9Enter a name and select OK.
Audio books
You can listen to audio books you have transferred to your phone from a computer using
Sony Ericsson Media Manager.
It may take a few minutes before a transferred audio book appears in the list of available audio
books.
To access audio books
•From standby select Menu > Media > Music > Audio books.
You can find audio books in formats other than M4B and those that do not have ID3v2 chapter
tags in the Tracks folder.
Podcasts
Podcasts are files, for example, radio programmes or video content, that you can download
and play. You subscribe to and download podcasts using Web feeds.

To access audio podcasts
•From standby select Menu > Media > Music > Podcasts.
To access video podcasts
•From standby select Menu > Media > Video > Podcasts.
Buy Now
If you subscribe to a music service allowing limited, non-permanent use with your phone,
you can mark a track you are interested in buying later. The next time you synchronise your
music with Windows Media® Player on a computer with enabled Internet access, you
should be asked if you want to buy the track you marked earlier. If you accept, the track is
downloaded to your computer and your selected music service account is charged. This
service requires a subscription and account with a downloadable music service, a
computer with Microsoft® Windows Media® Player 11 or subsequent compatible version
of Windows Media® Player, and a USB computer connection.
You cannot see that a track is marked. You cannot unmark tracks you have already marked.
To mark a track
•When the track you want to mark is playing, press and hold down .
Online music and videos
You can listen to music and view videos by streaming them to your phone from the Internet.
In order to stream, you must have a data account. Your phone may be pre-configured with
a data account. If it is not, please contact your network operator or go to
www.sonyericsson.com/support to download the Using the Internet Feature guide.
To select a data account for streaming
1From standby select Menu > Settings > the Connectivity tab > Streaming
settings > Connect using:.
2Select the data account to use.
3Select Save.
To stream music and video clips
1From standby select Menu > Internet.
2Select Options > Go to > Bookmarks.
3Select a link to stream from.
TrackID™
TrackID™ is a music recognition service. You can search for song title, artist and album
name for a track you hear playing through a loudspeaker or on the radio in your phone. For
best results, use TrackID™ in a quiet area. Online search also lets you enter text to search
for track information. You can save search results.
For cost information contact your service provider.
To search for track information when you hear a track through a loudspeaker
•From standby select Menu > Entertainment > TrackID™ > Start.
To search for track information when you hear a track on the radio in your phone
•When the radio is playing, select Options > TrackID™.

To access Online search
•From standby select Menu > Entertainment > TrackID™ > Options > Online search.
To access Saved results
•From standby select Menu > Entertainment > TrackID™ > Options > Saved results.
PlayNow™
You can connect to PlayNow™ to download ringtones, games, music, themes and
wallpapers. You can preview or listen to content before you purchase and download it to
your phone. If you cannot use PlayNow™, see I cannot use Internet-based services on
page 14.
This service is not available in all countries.
You can access PlayNow™ in two ways:
•From standby select Menu > PlayNow™.
•Go to www.playnow-arena.com.
Using sounds
You can use a sound as a ringtone, an alarm signal, a message alert or a contact ringtone.
To use a sound
1From standby select Menu > Organiser > File manager > Music.
2Find an item and select Options > Use as.
3Select an option.
Radio
Do not use your phone as a radio in places where this is prohibited.
To turn on the radio
1Connect a handsfree to the phone.
2From standby select Menu > Radio.
To search for channels automatically
•Select Search.
To search for channels manually
•Press or .
To change the volume
•Press the volume key up or down.
To minimise the radio
•Select Options > Minimise.
To return to the radio
•From standby select Menu > Radio.

You can save up to 20 preset channels.

1When you have found a radio channel, select Options > Save.
2Scroll to a position and select Insert.

To switch between saved channels

Radio options
The following Options are available:
•Turn off – turn off the radio.
•TrackID™ – search for track titles, artists and album names to identify music using the
Internet.
•Save – save the current frequency in a position.
•Channels – select, rename, replace or delete a saved channel.
•Auto save –find and save FM channels with a strong signal in positions 1 to 20. Previously
saved channels are replaced.
•Turn on speaker – use the speaker.
•Set frequency – enter a frequency manually.
•RDS – set options for alternative frequency (AF) and station information.
•Turn on Mono – turn on mono sound.
•Minimise – return to standby to use other functions when listening to the radio.
