Getting started
The instructions in this User guide, unless otherwise stated, are written on the basis that you
access your phone's functions from the default Home screen. If you set Timescape™ or another
application as your home screen, the instruction path may differ.

Some of the services and features described in this User guide are not supported in all countries/
regions or by all networks and/or service providers in all areas. Without limitation, this applies to
the GSM International Emergency Number 112. Please contact your network operator or service
provider to determine availability of any specific service or feature and whether additional access
or usage fees apply.

To access the User guide in your phone
•From the Home screen, tap the applications bar > User guide.
Assembly
To insert the SIM card and the memory card
1Remove the battery cover.
2Slide the SIM card and the memory card into the holders with the gold-coloured
contacts facing down.

To remove the memory card
•Remove the battery cover and press the edge of the memory card to release and
remove it.
To insert the battery
1Insert the battery with the label side up and the connectors facing each other.
2Attach the battery cover.
Turning the phone on and off
The first time you turn on the phone, the Welcome menu appears.
To turn on the phone
1Press and hold down the key on the top of the phone.
2Enter your SIM card PIN, if requested, and select OK.
3At first startup, follow the instructions in the Welcome menu.
Your PIN is supplied by your network operator. If you want to correct a mistake made while
entering your SIM card PIN, press .
To turn off the phone
1Press and hold until the options menu opens.
2In the options menu, tap Power off.
3Tap OK.
To activate the screen
•Press or press briefly.
Connect and communicate
Importing contacts from the SIM card
The first time you start your phone, a setup guide lets you import contacts from the SIM
card. You can also import the SIM contacts later.

Internet and messaging settings
For most mobile phone networks and operators, settings for messaging and Internet will
be preinstalled in your phone when you buy it. In some cases you will get the option to
download settings the first time you turn on the phone with a SIM card inserted. It is also
possible to automatically download or manually add and change Internet and network
settings in your phone at any time. See Internet and messaging settings on page 25 for
more information.
Please contact your network operator for any other information on your subscription
settings.
Social web services
You can use your phone with many web-based services, for example, social networking
and media sharing.
•You can set up some of your web service accounts to use them with Sony Ericsson
Timescape™ and your phone contacts.
•You can share photos and videos using a number of web services. See Setting up
accounts for online services on page 68.
Google™ account
You can set up a Google™ account in your phone to use with the Gmail™, Google Talk™
and Google Calendar™ applications.
To set up a Google™ account in your phone
1From the Home screen, tap the applications bar.
2Tap Settings > Online service accounts > Google.
3Follow the registration wizard to create a Google™ account, or sign in if you already
have an account.
4Your phone is now ready to use with Gmail™, Google Talk™ and Google
Calendar™.
It is also possible to create or set up a Google™ account from the Welcome! menu the first time
you start the phone. You can also create a Google™ account by going to
www.google.com/accounts in the web browser of your computer.
To delete a Google™ account from your phone
Performing this task may reset all user data in all Google™ services in your phone. You will need
to sign in with your Google™ account to use these services again. Make sure you have saved
and made backups of all data in your phone before you proceed. For more information on how
to make a complete reset of the phone, see Resetting the phone on page 94.
1From the Home screen, tap the applications bar.
2Tap Settings > Applications > Manage applications.
3Scroll down and tap Gmail™ .
4Tap Clear data.
5Press .
6Scroll down and tap Google Apps.
7Tap Clear data.
Synchronising and handling content
You can synchronise and transfer many types of files, documents and information between
your phone, a computer or the Internet. You can, for example:
•Use a USB cable to connect your phone to a computer. You can then transfer content
between the phone and the computer. See Connecting your phone to a computer on
page 56 for more information.
•Use the Media Go™ application to transfer and handle music, pictures and videos on your
phone and PC. See the Media Go™ section on page 57 for more information.
•Use the Sony Ericsson sync application to synchronise contacts and bookmarks between
your phone and the web. This way, you can access the content from any computer,
wherever you are. See Sony Ericsson Sync on page 45 for more information.

The phone battery is partly charged when you buy the phone.

To charge the phone using the power adapter
•Connect the phone to a power outlet using the USB cable and the power adapter.
To charge the phone using a computer
•Connect the phone to a USB port on a computer using the USB cable included in
the phone kit.
Maximising battery performance
You can use the following methods to improve your battery performance:
•Decrease the brightness of the screen.
•Charge your phone often. The battery lasts longer if you charge it frequently.
•If you are in an area with no coverage, your phone repeatedly scans for available networks.
This consumes power. If you cannot move to an area with better coverage, turn off your
phone temporarily.
•Turn off 3G, Bluetooth™ wireless technology and the Wi-Fi™ connection when you do not
need these functions.
•Do not cover the phone antenna when you are engaged in a call or when transferring data.

Home screen
The Home screen is the starting point of your phone. You can personalise the Home screen
by adding widgets, or by changing the wallpaper and the applications in the corners.
When you add more than one widget, the Home screen extends beyond the screen width.
The corners on the Home screen are used to access applications or bookmarks quickly.
You can add any application or bookmark to the corners.
When you go to the Home screen, some applications may continue to run in the background. If
you do not want applications to run in the background, you should exit each application you have
opened before going to the Home screen.
Widget is a part of an application on the Home screen. It displays important information from
that application, for example the Sony Ericsson Timescape™ widget displays incoming
messages and the Media widget allows you to start the music directly.
To view the extended Home screen
•Drag your finger to the sides to view the entire Home screen.
To add a Home screen item
1From the Home screen, press and tap Add.
2In the Add to Home screen menu, select the item you want to add.
To move an item to an area of the extended Home screen
1Touch and hold an item on the Home screen until it magnifies and the phone
vibrates.
2Drag the item to the left or right.
3Release the item.
To delete a Home screen item
1Touch and hold the item until appears at the bottom of the screen.
2Drag the item to and hold until the bottom of the screen lights up.
3Release the item.

To add a folder to the Home screen
1From the Home screen, press .
2Tap Add > Folder.
3Select the folder type you want to add.
To add items to a folder
1Touch and hold an application icon until it magnifies and the phone vibrates.
2Drag the application icon over to the folder.
To rename a folder
1Tap the folder to open it.
2Touch and hold the folder's title bar to open the Rename folder dialog box.
3Enter the Folder name and tap OK.
To add widgets to the Home screen
1Touch and hold on the Home screen until the Add to Home screen menu appears.
2Tap Widgets.
3Select an option.
To create a shortcut from the applications screen
1From the Home screen, tap the applications bar.
2Touch and hold an application until it appears on the Home screen.
To change the Home screen wallpaper
1From the Home screen, press .
2Tap Wallpaper.
3Tap Pictures or Wallpaper gallery.
4Tap Save or Set wallpaper.
Creatouch™ application
Mix different backgrounds, colors and shapes to create your own unique wallpapers. You
can also create free-hand drawings, and add text or photos. Share your self-designed
wallpapers with friends by uploading them to Facebook™ and Picasa™.
To open Creatouch™
•From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Creatouch™.

To add shapes and text to your wallpaper
1Touch and hold or to scroll to the left or right, and choose which home
screen pane you want to start working on.
2Tap the icon to open the menu.
3Choose which shape or text you want to add to your wallpaper. If you tap the text
icon, you also need to tap the text input field and enter the desired text.
4Tap the icon to go back to the workspace.
5Tap the screen to apply the shapes or text to the current pane. You can also hold
and drag your finger across the screen to scatter the shapes or text.
Status bar
A status bar at the top of the screen displays phone status information and notifications.
Notification icons appear on the left side of the status bar. Phone status icons appear on
the right side.

You can view and access recently used applications from this window.
To open the recently used applications window
•From any application, press and hold down .
Notification LED
The Notification LED is located at the top right corner. It provides information on the phone
status and on pending notifications.
LED status
Status Indication
Green The battery is almost charged (90-100%)
Flashing green You have a pending notification
Flashing red The battery level is low. The battery is charging and the battery level is still low
Yellow The battery is charging. The level is between low and full
The LED is turned off when charging is completed.
Sensors
Your phone has two built-in sensors – a light sensor and a proximity sensor. The light sensor
is used for automatic LCD backlight control. The proximity sensor turns the touch screen
off when your face touches the screen. This prevents you from unintentionally activating
phone functions when you are engaged in a call.
Using the touch screen
To open or highlight an item
•Tap the item.
To zoom
•When available, tap or to zoom in or out.
You may have to drag the screen (in any direction) to make the zoom icons appear.
To pan
•When this option is available, drag the screen to pan.
To mark or unmark options
•Tap the relevant checkbox or radio button to mark or unmark an option.

Scrolling
You can scroll up or down, and on some webpages you can also scroll to the sides.
Dragging or flicking will not activate anything on the screen.
To scroll
•Drag up or down to scroll. •Flick to scroll quickly. You can wait for the
scrolling to come to a stop or you can stop
it immediately by tapping the screen.
Orientation
When you turn the phone sideways, the screen orientation changes automatically between
portrait and landscape view. You can also set the phone to stay in portrait orientation by
disabling the automatic orientation setting.
To prevent the screen orientation from changing automatically
1From the Home screen, tap the applications bar.
2Tap Settings > Sound & display.
3Unmark the Orientation check box.
Preventing the screen orientation from changing automatically means that the phone stays in
portrait orientation.
To set the screen orientation to automatic
1From the Home screen, tap the applications bar.
2Tap Settings > Sound & display.
3Mark the Orientation check box.
List
Some lists have an alphabetic index on the side. Drag your finger along the index to scroll
through the index letters.

To jump directly to an index letter
•From any list with index letters, tap the letter you want to select on the index.
Screen lock
The screen lock prevents unwanted actions on the touch screen when you are not using
your phone. When the phone is left idle for a set period of time, the screen locks
automatically. You can change the direction of the screen lock path to get a better feel,
depending on if you are left- or right-handed.
To lock the screen
•Press briefly.
To unlock the screen
•Drag the screen lock arrow along the screen lock path.
To set the time interval for the automatic screen lock
1From the Home screen, tap the applications bar, then tap Settings.
2Tap Sound & display > Screen timeout.
3Select an option.
To change the direction of the screen lock path
•Touch and hold the upper part of the screen lock path, then drag it to the opposite
side of the screen.
