Precautions
On safety
l Caution - The useof optical instruments with
this product will increaseeye hazard.
l Should any solid object or liquid fall into the
cabinet, unplug theplayer andhaveit checked by
qualified personnel before operating it any
further.
On power sources
l The player is not disconnected from the AC
power sourceaslong asit is connectedto the wall
outlet, evenif the player itself hasbeen turned
off.
l If you arenot going to usethe player for a long
time, be sureto disconnect the player from the
wall outlet. To disconnect the AC power cord,
graspthe plug itself; never pull the cord.
l Should the AC power cord needto be changed,
have it done at a qualified service shop only.
On placement
l Placethe player in a location with adequate
ventilation to prevent heatbuild-up in the player.
* Do not place the player on a soft surface such as
arug that might block the ventilation holes on the
bottom.
l Do not place the player in a location near heat
sources,or in aplace subject to direct sunlight,
excessive dust, or mechanical shock.
On operation
* If the player is brought directly from a cold to a
warm location, or is placed in avery damp room,
moisture may condenseon the lensesinside the
player. Should this occur, the player may not
operateproperly. In this case,remove the disc
and leave the player turned on for about half an
hour until the moisture evaporates.
l When you move theplayer, take out any discs. If
you don’t, the disc may be damaged.
On adjusting volume
Do not turn up the volume while listening to a
section with very low level inputs or no audio
signals. If you do, the speakersmay be damaged
when apeak level section is played.
On cleaning
Clean the cabinet, panel, and controls with a soft
cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent
solution. Do not useany type of abrasive pad,
scouring powder or solvent such asalcohol or
benzine.
If you have any questions or problems concerning
your player, pleaseconsult your nearestSony
dealer.
On cleaning discs
Do not useacommercially available cleaning disc.
It may causea malfunction.

back of the unit and only will play DVD
VIDEO discs (playback only) labeled with
identical region codes.
DVDs labeled e will also play on this
player.

If you try to play any other DVD, the
message“Playback prohibited by area
limitations.” will appearon the TV screen,
Depending on the DVD, no region code
indication may be labeled even though
playing the DVD is prohibited by area
restrictions.
The player cannot play the following discs:
l CD-ROMs (PHOTO CDs included)
l All CD-Rs/CD-RWs other than music and
VCD format CD-R&D-RWs
l Data part of CD-Extras
l DVD-ROMs
l DVD Audio discs
Also, the player cannot play the following
discs:
l A DVD with adifferent regioncode(page97).
l A disc recorded in acolor system other than
NTSC, suchasPAL or SECAM (this player
conforms to the NTSC color system).
l A disc that hasa non-standard shape(e.g.,
card, heart).
l A disc with paper or stickers on it.
l A disc that has the adhesive of cellophane
tape or a sticker still left on it.

Some DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, CD-Rs. or CD-RWs
cannot he played on this player due to the recording
quality or physical condition of the disc. 01.the
characteristics of the recording device. DVD-RWs in
VR mode may also take time to play hack due to the
recording condition.
Furthermore, the disc will not play if it has not been
correctly finalized. For more information. seethe
operating instructions for the recording device.
Some playback operations of DVDs and
VIDEO CDs may be intentionally setby
software producers. Since this player plays
DVDs andVIDEO CDs according to the disc
contents the software producers designed,
someplayback featuresmay not be available.
Also, refer to the instructions supplied with
the DVDs or VIDEO CDs.

Notesaboutthe Discs
On handling discs
l To keepthe disc clean,handle thedisc by its
edge.Do not touch the surface.
l Do not exposethe disc to direct sunlight or
heat sourcessuch ashot air ducts, or leave
it in acar parked in direct sunlight asthe
temperature may rise considerably inside
the car.
l After playing, store the disc in its case.
On cleaning
l Before playing, clean the disc with a
cleaning cloth.
Wipe the disc from the center out.
l Do not usesolvents such asbenzine,
thinner, commercially available cleaners,or
anti-static spray intended for vinyl LPs.

Guideto the RemoteControlLCDScreen
The supplied remote has anLCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screenand scroll key for controlling
the player without using the Control Menu Display. By pushing the scroll key up or down, you
can call up various displays and functions such as“TIME/TEXT” and “SUBTITLE.”

“OFF.” (“SURROUND, ” “PROGRAM,” “SHUFFLE,” “REPEAT,” “A-B REPEAT,” “BNR,” “DIGITAL VIDEO
ENHANCER” only). The “ANGLE” indicator lights up in green only when the angles can be changed. The “VIDEO
EQUALIZER” indicator lights up in green when any setting other than “STANDARD” is selected. The “VIEWER”
indicator lights up in green when a bookmark is set.

Step1:Unpacking
Check that you have the following items:
l Audio/video cord (pinplug x 3 t, pinplug x 3) (1)

l Size AA (R6) batteries (2)
Step2: InsertingBatteriesintothe Remote
You can control the player using the supplied remote. Insert two size AA (R6) batteries by
matching the @ and0 endson thebatteries to the markings inside the compartment. When using
the remote, point it at the remote sensor q on the player.
. Do not leavetheremotein anextremelyhot or humid place.
l Do not dropanyforeign object into theremotecasing,particularly whenreplacingthe batteries.
l Do not exposetheremotesensorto direct light from thesunor alighting apparatus.Doing somaycausea
malfunction.
l If you do notusetheremotefor anextendedperiodof time, removethebatteriesto avoid possibledamagefrom
batteryleakageandcorrosion.

Step3: TVHookups
When connecting to a wide screen TV
Depending on the disc, the image may not fit your TV screen.
If you want to change the aspectratio, pleaserefer to page 82.

When connecting to a TV that accepts progressive (480~) format signals
You needto usethe COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks to view progressive signals. Hook up
your TV using pattern @ on page 20, and then run Quick Setup on page 31.
If your TV has an S-LINK (control S) input jack
You cancontrol the player from aSony TV, or control aSony TV using the player. For instance,
when you play a DVD, the TV’s input will automatically switch to thejack to which you
connected the player.
Correct the TV via the S-LINK/CONTROL S IN jack using an S-LINK cord (not supplied).
Refer to the instructions supplied with the TV.

Step4: Playinga Disc
q Turnonthe TV.
a Switchthe input selector onthe TVto the player.
With the playback side facing down

Press I/& on the remote. The player is set to standby mode and the power indicator lights up in
red. PressPOWER on the player to turn off completely.

HookingUpthe Player
Follow Steps 1to 4 to hook up and adjust the settings of the player.
Before you start, turn off thepower, check that you have all of the supplied accessories,andinsert
the batteries into the remote (page 16).
l Plug cords securely to prevent unwanted noise.
l Refer to the instructions supplied with the components to be connected.
Step1:ConnectingtheVideoCords
Connect this player to your TV monitor, projector, or AV amplifier (receiver) using a video cord.
Selectoneof thepatterns0 through 0, according to theinput jack on your TV monitor, projector,
or AV amplifier (receiver). In order to view progressive signal (480~) pictures with acompatible
TV, projector, or monitor, you must useconnection @.
