Instructions for add drive upgrade for Sony SVR-3000
A FEW WORDS OF CAUTION:
First and foremost, please be aware that upgrading a TiVo presents a few physical
hazards. As with most consumer electronics devices, components in the TiVo may still
carry a lethal charge, even after disconnecting the power cord. Be aware of this while
working inside your TiVo. Allow sufficient time for discharging of components and avoid
contact as much as possible with potential hazards. While we have done everything we
can to provide accurate, easy-to-follow instructions, we cannot be responsible for any
damage done to your TiVo or to yourself as a result of your upgrade. By opening your
TiVo, you agree that neither Adberg Consulting LLC nor any of its members or affiliates is
responsible in any way for any harm done. Please be VERY careful when upgrading.
NEVER open the TiVo while the unit is plugged in and NEVER operate the TiVo if the lid is
not securely fastened.
Please Note: Opening the TiVo voids the warranty.
THIS KIT INCLUDES:
1 Hard drive IDE cable
1 Hard drive power cable
1 Set of 4 hard drive screws
1 Upgrade hard drive
1 Set of upgrade instructions
1. OPENING THE TIVO
Unplug the power cord from your electrical outlet
and wait five minutes for the TiVo to discharge. Do
not plug the TiVo back in until you are completely
finished. Be very careful of static electricity, which
can destroy your TiVo’s internal parts. You should
not perform this upgrade on carpet.
Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, unscrew the two
screws on the back of your TiVo. The two screws
are surrounded by silver from the top of the TiVo’s
lid.

Next, remove the four, large-head screws, two on
each side of the unit.
Once the six screws are removed, remove the lid.
The cover should slide back and then up. Remove
the cover from the TiVo, and set it in front of the
TiVo unit, top up. You will use this as a platform for
the drive bay.
2. DISCONNECTING THE DRIVE BAY
With the cover off and looking underneath the front
lip of the TiVo, you will be able to see (1) one hard
drive, (2) an IDE ribbon cable that runs from the
greenish motherboard underneath the drive to the
hard drive, (3) a multi-colored (red, black, yellow)
power cable that runs from the power supply to the
hard drive, and (4) a fan cable that runs from the
hard drive bay to the motherboard.
Gently remove the fan cable from the motherboard.
Pull straight up and out. Using your second and
middle fingers, reach down in between the front of
the hard drive and the front of the TiVo to remove
the power cable from the hard drive.
Using your screwdriver, unscrew and remove the
four drive bracket screws securing the drive bay to
the TiVo chassis. Set these black screws aside and
do not confuse these screws with the other screws
you have removed from your TiVo.
Once the screws are removed, you will be able to lift
the drive bay up and out of the TiVo. Lift the drive
bracket up and then flip it so that it is perpendicular
to the TiVo. (If you are facing the TiVo, you will tilt
the drive bracket so that the two drive labels are
facing you.) With one hand holding the bracket, use
your other hand to remove the IDE cable connecting
the hard drive to the TiVo.
3. CHECKING THE JUMPERS

Pick up the hard drive bay and look at the hard drive
with the label facing up. Your TiVo’s factory hard
drive has a small plastic “jumper” that is located
between the IDE cable and the power cable
connectors. In a Maxtor hard drive, the jumper
should be moved to the furthest left-hand position.
Gently remove the jumper with the end of a paper
clip or your fingernail and move it to the proper
position. NOTE: the jumper must be vertical and
must be carefully inserted so that the left-most pins
fit inside the plastic jumper.
Now, look at the back of the drive that you received
in your kit (with the label facing up). If the drive in
your kit is a Samsung drive, you should see two
jumpers that are horizontal. If the drive in your kit
is a Maxtor drive, you should see either one
horizontal jumper or two horizontal jumpers (either
is fine). If you see jumpers in any configuration
other than the ones described above, please email
us.
4. MOVING THE EXISTING DRIVE AND CONNECTING THE NEW HARD
DRIVE TO THE DRIVE BAY
After you have moved the jumper to the proper
setting, place the hard drive bay upside-down on the
TiVo lid, with the drive label down and the drive
connectors facing the front of the TiVo.
With the hard drive bay upside down on the TiVo lid,
use your screwdriver and remove the four screws
connecting the hard drive to the hard drive bay.
Set these four screws aside, and do not confuse the
drive screws with the other screws that you
removed. These screws are silver and are the
shortest screws that you will remove.
Slide the hard drive that you just unscrewed to the
end of the hard drive bay, being sure that four
screwholes in the drive are aligned with the four
previously unused holes in the drive bay. Reconnect
the hard drive to the drive bay using the four screws
that you just removed. We have found that the
easiest way to attach the drive to the bracket is to
turn the bracket upside down. Using one hand, hold
the drive against the bottom of the bracket and look
through the holes in the drive bay to align the screw
holes. Using your hands, screw the screws into each
of the four holes. Tighten them with the screwdriver.

Align your new hard drive on the drive bay, next to
the existing hard drive (the new drive sits between
the existing drive and the fan, where the existing
hard drive was located). Using your hands, screw
the screws into each of the four holes. Use a
Phillips-head screwdriver to tighten the screws. You
should now have two drives connected to the drive
bay.
5. REPLACING THE POWER CABLE AND IDE CABLE
Your upgrade kit contains two cables. The first is a
multi-color (black, red, yellow) power splitter cable.
The second is a hard drive IDE cable. The hard
drives and hard drive bay should still be outside of
the TiVo. First, install the IDE cable into the two
drives. The gray connector connects to the drive you
received in your upgrade kit (the drive closer to the
fan). The black connector connects to the TiVo’s
original drive. Note the grooves on one edge of each
connector—these must align with the notch in the
drive connector.
Take the red/yellow/black power splitter cable
included with your upgrade kit and connect the short
end to the drive closer to the fan cable. (The small
end of the power cable connects to the drive that you
received in your drive kit.) Now, connect the long
end of the power splitter cable to the other drive.
(The long end of the power cable connects to your
TiVo’s original/factory drive.)

6. RE-ATTACHING THE DRIVE BAY
The TiVo drive bracket should still be sitting on top
of the TiVo lid. The IDE and power cables should be
connected. Now, slide the bracket to the edge of
the TiVo lid and insert the blue end of the IDE cable
into the TiVo motherboard. Be careful to insert the
cable properly. There is a groove in the blue
connector that must align with the notch in the
motherboard connector.
Now, attach the (red/yellow/black) drive power
connector from the TiVo into the power connector
coming out of the drives.
Once the cables are connected, carefully flip the
drive bracket over and install it into the TiVo. The
drive bracket will move fairly freely inside the TiVo,
and you will have to be careful to align the four
holes in the TiVo with the four holes on the drive
bracket. Be sure that the IDE and power cables are
in front of the two drives. They should NOT be under
the drives as you turn the bracket over.
Once the four holes are aligned and the drive
bracket is installed, again be sure that the IDE and
power cables are tucked under the front lip of the
TiVo. It is critical that all of these cables are tucked
underneath the gold AND silver tabs on the lip of the
TiVo. The silver tabs are circled in the picture.
Screw the four black screws back into the holes on
the drive bay.
Insert the fan cable back into the
motherboard. (This is easy to forget,
which is why it is in bold!)
7. RE-ATTACHING THE TIVO LID
Place the TiVo lid back over the TiVo. Align the clips
on each side of the lid so that they clip down on the
sides of your TiVo. Slide the lid toward you while
simultaneously pushing down on the top of the lid.
Once the lid is in place, reattach the six screws to
secure the lid to the TiVo.
