The ongoing evolution of
the high definition video format demands an
evaluation monitor of the highest performance. For precise, stable
image quality that meets the most exacting professional requirements, Sony introduces
the new HDM Series.
Using HR Trinitron®technology for superb picture reproduction, the HDM Series
incorporates performance features derived from Sony’s popular BVM Series—including a
modular unit design, for proven system flexibility and ease of operation.
Sony’s HD SDI* option also allows you to connect to the latest generation of high
definition equipment.
The HDM Series combines the advantages of Sony experience in conventional monitor
design with innovative HD-related features, making it the ideal professional choice to
meet the essential needs of HD picture evaluation.
*HD SDI: High Definition Serial Digital Interface. Requires optional HD SDI input adaptor BKM-41HD or BKM-42HD.

Picture Reproduction
The Sony HDM Series incorporates HR Trinitron
technology for ultra-precise image reproduction. The
HDM-20E1U achieves center resolution* of 850 TV
lines and the HDM-14E1U/14E5U delivers 700 TV
lines, for ultra-fine image detail in both screen sizes.
And with SMPTE-C standard color phosphors and
Sony’s beam current feedback circuit, the HDM Series
delivers highly stable color reproduction over time—a
primary requirement for the reliable picture
evaluation.
* The number of vertical white-and-black stripes visible in an area where the
screen width is the same as screen height in 16:9 aspect.
The HDM Series provides flexible input capability,
accepting both 1080 or 1035 signal formats in either
59.94 or 60 Hz vertical rates. These monitors
incorporate high bandwidth signal paths, allowing
extremely flat frequency response to 30 MHz.
With the optional Sony HD SDI (High Definition Serial
Digital Interface) input adaptor installed, HDM Series
monitors can receive full data rate 10-bit component
serial digital data transmission through a single BNC
cable. Up to 4* HD SDI inputs can be available with a
combination of adaptors. Input for analog high
definition video (YPBPR) signals and analog GBR
signals with loop-through is also standard.
* Applies to HDM-20E1U/14E5U; requires 2 BKM-42HD input adaptors
equipped with 2 HD SDI inputs.

Integration
With a flexible configuration that divides monitor and
control units into separate components, the HDM
Series provides the same system flexibility as Sony’s
proven BVM Series monitors. Up to 32 monitors can be
controlled with one BKM-10R/11R Control Unit—and
because the same control protocol is used, conventional
BVM E/F/G Series monitors can also be controlled in a
single integrated system.

A maximum of 32 monitors can be controlled via RS-485 which enables
mutual communication between the monitors and one BKM-10R/11R
control unit.

For situations where final distribution will be in a
conventional NTSC format, Sony’s 4:3 area marker
makes it simple to take this into account during
acquisition and editing. The HDM Series has a 4:3
area marker which clearly delineates the 4:3 aspect
area within the 16:9 widescreen picture. The area
marker can be displayed in several formats including
line, translucent mat, and full black mat.

HD SDI Input Adaptor
◆ BKM-41HD/42HD
Designed to provide the HDM-20E1U, HDM-14E1U
and HDM-14E5U monitors with a powerful, convenient
digital signal interface—and accommodate a new
generation of advanced Sony HDVS equipment.
• HD SDI decoding capability enables transmission
of full data rate 10-bit component digital signals
with a bit rate of 1.5 Gbps (conforms to the
SMPTE-292M standard).
• With HD serial digital signals, 1080 or 1035 active
lines are automatically selected.
• Analog Component Input/Output (YPBPR, GBR) is
provided through a BNC connector with loop-
through output capability.
