UNLEADED SOLDER
Boards requiring use of unleaded solder are printed with the lead-
free mark (LF) indicating the solder contains no lead.
( Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not come printed with
the lead free mark due to their particular size)
: LEAD FREE MARK
Unleaded solder has the following characteristics.
• Unleaded solder melts at a temperature about 40 °C higher
than ordinary solder.
Ordinary soldering irons can be used but the iron tip has to be
applied to the solder joint for a slightly longer time.
Soldering irons using a temperature regulator should be set to
about 350 °C.
Caution: The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away if
the heated tip is applied for too long, so be careful!
• Strong viscosity
Unleaded solder is more viscous (sticky, less prone to
fl ow)
than ordinary solder so use caution not to let solder bridges
occur such as on IC pins, etc.
• Usable with ordinary solder
It is best to use only unleaded solder but unleaded solder may
also be added to ordinary solder.
NOTES ON CHIP COMPONENT REPLACEMENT
• Never reuse a disconnected chip component.
• Notice that the minus side of a tantalum capacitor may be dam-
aged by heat.

NOTES ON THE AC POWER ADAPTOR
• When operating the unit with the internal batteries, remove the
AC power adaptor from the wall outlet and the DC IN 9 Vjack.
Make sure that the plug of the external power source is discon-
nected before operating the unit.
• Use the supplied Sony AC power adaptor only. The polarity
of the plugs of other manufacturers may be different. Failure
to use the supplied AC power adaptor may cause the unit to
malfunction.

Initial setting for the DAB
When the ACpower adaptorisplugged in, orthe
batteries are installed forthe rst time aer purchase (or
aer resetting), the unitwill automaticallyscanand
create a list ofreceivablebroadcasts.
1Adjust the aerial accordingly.
2Press POWER to turnonthe radio.
“DAB TUNING”U“DABNOSERVICE” U“DAB
INITIAL SCAN”appears in the display,the unitwill
automaticallyscan, create a list ofreceivable DAB
broadcasts and adjusts the clock.
DAB scantakes a few minutes. When nished,the
unitreceives the rstservice in order stored bythe
DABscan.
Notes
[Ifyouchangethe unit’slocationofuse, orwantto
add a newservice aer the initial setting, press and
hold DAB/FM.“INITIAL SCAN?”appears in the
displayand then press ENTER. e unitwill
automaticallyscanand create a list ofreceivable
services.
[Ifyouset the initial settingorscan, anyDAB
services registered as preset are erased.
[Ifno services arefound bythe DAB scan,“NO
SERVICE”appears in the display.Inthatcase, if
DABis selectedagain, the unitwill automatically
scan.

Set the clock
Dothefollowing if DAB broadcasts arenotavailable

becomes invalid.

Operating the radio
e unitcanreceiveDABservices and FM stations.
1Press DAB/FM(RADIO/BAND on the
remote) toturnonthe radio.
When the unitis turnedonagain, thelast bandyou
listened to is received.
2Press DAB/FM(RADIO/BAND on the
remote)repeatedlytoselectthedesiredband.
Each press changes the band as follows:
DABFM
3TurnTUNING/SELECT(press TUNE + or –
ontheremote) totune tothe desired service
or station.
4Adjust thevolumeusing VOLUME.
Notes in FM usage
[e frequencycanbeset in 0.05 MHzsteps for FM.
[Ifthe FM broadcast isnoisy,press andhold MODE on
the unitmorethan 2 seconds (press MODE on the
remote)until“MONO”appears inthedisplayand the
radio will play in monaural.
[When the unitreceives an FM stationtransmitting
RDS data, text informationappears in the display.
[Eachtimeyou press DISPLAY,the displaychanges
current time and frequency.
To listen with headphones
Youcan enjoythe radio and externalequipment
connected tothe line in byheadphones (notsupplied).
Connectheadphones (notsupplied) to theJ
(headphones) jack. e speaker is deactivatedwhen
headphones are connected.
Presetting your favorite
services or stations
Presetting services and stations
Youcanpreset 20 services andstationseachforDAB and
FM.
1Followsteps 1to 3in “Operatingthe radio”
andtune into service orstationyouwish to
preset.
2Hold down MEMORYformorethan 2
seconds.
“ENTER PRESET NO.”appearsand preset number
ashes in the display.
e next preset number fromthe most recentpreset
is displayed (but if the last preset number was 20, 1
will bedisplayed).
3TurnTUNING/SELECTtoselect thepreset
number,thenpressENTER.
“PRESET COMPLETE!”appears in the displayand
service orstationis storedwiththe selected preset
number.
Topreset another service orstation, repeat thesesteps.

[Ifyoutryto storeanother stationwiththe same preset
number,the previouslystoredstationwill bereplaced.

Scan tuning (for FM)

3Hold down SCAN +or –(TUNE +or –on the
remote) formorethan2 seconds.
+: scanstothe higher frequency.
–: scansto the lowerfrequency.
Scanningstarts fromthe frequencybeingtuned in.
When a stationisreceived,scanningstops.
4If necessary,turnTUNING/SELECT(press
TUNE +or –onthe remote) to tune in to the
stationmoreprecisely.

Using the GUIDE
is unit downloads the EPG (electronic programme
guide) included in the DAB data and displays it. e unit
also enables youtoperformtimer operations, usingthe
downloaded EPG (see “Settingthe guide timer”).
To download the EPG
1Followsteps 1to 3in “Operatingthe radio”
andtune into DABservice.
2Press GUIDE formorethan 2 seconds.
“GUIDEDOWNLOAD”appears in the display.
3TurnTUNING/SELECTto select the
“CURRENT”or“ALL.”
“CURRENT”: Onlythe currentstationis
downloaded.
“ALL”: All stationsaredownloaded in order.
4Press ENTER.
“GUIDEDOWNLOADING”ashes in the display
until “%” andcurrent ensemble name appears.
When download is completed,the EPG is displayedas
follows:

Pausing and rewinding radio

as NEWS, SPORTS, etc., in the PTY list, transmitted as
DAB.

is unitis compatible with CD-Rs/CD-RWs but
playback capability may varydependingonthe quality of
the disc, the recording device andapplicationsoware.
Music discs encoded with copyright protection
technologies
is productis designed toplayback discs that conform
to theCompact Disc (CD) standard.
Recently, variousmusic discs encoded with copyright
protectiontechnologies aremarketedbysomerecord
companies. Pleasebeawarethatamongthose discs, there
aresomethat do not conformtothe CD standardand
maynotbeplayable bythis product.
To handle compact discs
Correct

Handle the discbyits edge.
Note on DualDiscs
ADualDiscis a two sided discproductwhich mates DVD
recorded materialonone side with digital audio material
onthe other side. However, since the audio material side
does not conformtothe Compact Disc(CD) standard,
playbackonthisproduct isnotguaranteed.
Notes
[Discswithnon-standardshapes (e.g., heart, square,
star) cannotbeplayedonthis unit. Attemptingto do so
maydamagethe unit.Donotusesuch discs.
[Toprevent a CD frombeingdamaged while inserting/
removingit, set the carryinghandle down when
playing a CD.
[When you eject a disc, handle the discbyits edge. Do
not touchthe surface.

Creating your own programme
(programme play)
Youcanarrangethe playingorder ofupto 20 tracks on a CD.
1Followsteps 1and2in “Playinga CD”
2Press MODE until “PROGRAM”appears in
thedisplay.
3Press .or Nor turn
TUNING/SELECTto selectthe trackand then
press ENTER to add it totheprogramme.
Repeat toprogramme other tracks in the order that
you want.
Aer programmingthe rsttrack, “STEP 1” appears,
followedbyselectedtrack.
Each time you add a track, a step number is added.
4Press V(#ontheremote) tostart
ProgrammePlay.
Tocancel programme play
Stop playingrst. en press MODE until “PROGRAM”
disappearsfromthe display.
To clear the programme you set
[Press CLEAR ontheremote.
[Stop playback rst. en press STOP Y.
Tip
Youcanplaythe sameprogramme again, since the
programme is saved until youeject the CD.
Connecting optional
component
To enhance your system, youcan connectoptional
components. Besuretoturnothepower ofeach
componentbeforemakingany connections. For details, refer
tothe instructionmanual ofthe component tobe connected.
To listen to the sound from optional
components in the unit
1Connect the AUDIO IN jack onthe unit to
thelineoutputjackoftheportable digital
music player orother components usingan
audio connectingcable* (notsupplied).

For a PC: use a cable which lls the connectorof
your PC. For a TVorVCR: use a cable with a stereo-
mini plug onone end and twophono plugs onthe
other end. For a portable digitalmusic player:use a
cable with a stereo-mini plug onboth ends.

Using the timers
e unitoers three timer functions. Ifyouusethe
alarmtimer or guide timer withthe sleep timer,the sleep
timer has priority.
Setting the sleep timer
e sleep timer allows youto fall asleep to thesound of a
CD,the radio,or inputfromthe AUDIO IN function.It
does this byautomaticallyturningothe CD,the radio,or
inputfromthe AUDIO IN functionaer a preset duration.
1Press SLEEP whilethe unitisturnedon.
“SLEEP”appears in the display.
2Press SLEEP to set the sleep timer duration.
Eachtimeyoupress SLEEP,thedurationchangesas
follows:
“AUTO*”
U “60” U “30” U “20” U “10” U “OFF”.
*When youselect“AUTO,”the CD stops playing in
90 minutes atmost and the unitgoeso
automatically.When youare listeningto the radio,
the radio goes oin 90 minutes.
e unitautomaticallyturnsowhen the duration time
ispassed.

andreleasedSLEEP,“SLEEP”appears in the displayand
back lightwill turno,then the sleep timer starts. e
unitwill playforthedurationyouset, andthenshuto.
Note
Even if thedurationispassed,the optional component
connected withAUDIO IN is not turnedo.
To change the sleep timer setting
Repeatstep 2toselectthe desiredsleep timer setting
even aer thesleep timer has been activated.
To deactivate the sleep timer
[Press POWER. e unitwill turno.
[Press SLEEP toset the sleep timer “OFF,”onlythe sleep
timer will becancelled (the unitstays ON).
Setting the alarm timer
Youcanset the unitto turnonautomaticallyat a preset time.
e timer sound is selectable fromDAB, FM, CD and
BUZZER.
Makesureyouhavesettheclock.
To set the alarm timer
1Press MENU to showthe menudisplay.
2TurnTUNING/SELECT(or on the
remote)toselect“TIMERSETTING,”then
press ENTER.

1. CD Block is basically constructed to operate without adjustment.
2. Use YEDS-18 disc (3-702-101-01) unless otherwise indicated.
3. Use an oscilloscope with more than 10 M

4. Clean the object lens by an applicator with neutral detergent when the
signal level is low than speci
fi ed value with the following checks.
5. Check the focus bias check when optical block is replaced.
