Introduction
This First Step Guide assumes the following conditions and usage for your system, and explains the procedures up until
actual operation. Use this document as a guide for setting up the unit before actual operation.
1) Be aware that if you decide to partition the internal hard disk later on, data that has already been recorded will be lost.

If your operating environment or purpose of use requires the more advanced functions and settings available on the
NSR, refer to the Installation Manual (separate document) or User’s Guide (PDF) for details.
Examples of advanced operations
• Using non-Sony network cameras.
• Recording to storage expansions.
• Partitioning the internal hard disk or external storage, and assigning different storage locations based on the camera
or type of recording.
• Alarm recording.
• Controlling pan, tilt, and zoom on analog cameras.
• Using audio.
• Using client software (RealShot Manager Advanced).
• Customizing the layout.
• Advanced searching.
• Consolidating user management operations for multiple servers.
• Exporting video or still images to external media.
• Automatically presetting the camera in response to external alarms, and adjusting options such as the layout.
Conditions and usage assumed in this guide
• System includes only Sony network cameras and analog cameras.
• Pan, tilt, and zoom operations for analog cameras are not used.
• Audio is not used.
• Only scheduled recording is performed.
• Internal hard disk is not partitioned (partition settings not configured).1)

Installation and Setup Procedure
This document provides general explanations on installation and setup of systems that are constructed as follows.
1)The NSR-1050H is standard equipped with an NSBK-A16 analog encoder board, but the NSR-1200/1100 requires an optional NSBK-A16 or NSBK-
A16H expansion.
To use the NSBK-A16H, the software on the NSR must be updated to version 1.4 or later.
Notes
• Be sure to read the Safety Regulations (separate document) before installing the unit.
• For details on optional NSBK-A16/A16H expansions, contact your Sony dealer.
• PDF manuals are included with this unit. For details on how to use the PDF manuals, refer to the Installation Manual
(separate document).

Step 1: Installation
Installing the Unit
Before setting up, be sure that the location for
installation provides sufficient space and strength to
support the unit.
For details on installation, refer to the Installation
Manual (separate document).
Preparing Devices
Prepare the following devices based on your intended
use.
• Monitors ×2 (operations/settings; hot spot
monitoring)
• Monitor cable (if necessary)
•Keyboard
•Mouse
• System Controller
• Network cameras
•Networkswitch
•LANcable
• Analog cameras (when using an NSR-1050H unit or
an NSBK-A16/A16H expansion)
Installing Devices
Connecting the Monitors
Connect the monitor for operations and settings to
monitor connector 1, and connect the monitor for hot
spot monitoring to monitor connector 2.
For systems with only one monitor, be sure to connect
the monitor to monitor connector 1.

Caution
• There are restrictions on the combination of monitor
connectors that you can use. Be sure to read
“Connecting a Monitor” and “Monitor Connection
Examples” in the Installation Manual (separate
document) before connecting the monitors.
• When monitors are connected via a monitor switch,
images may not always display. We recommend
connecting monitors directly to the unit.

Step 1: Installation
Connecting the Keyboard, Mouse and
System Controller
Connect the devices to the USB connectors on the front
and rear of the unit.
Example) When connecting to the USB
connector on the rear
Connecting the Network Cameras
Connect the network cameras and the unit to the same
network segment.
Connecting the Analog Cameras (only
with the NSR-1050H or NSBK-A16/A16H
expansion)
Use the supplied analog camera input cable to connect
the analog cameras.
Connect the analog cameras to the black video input
connectors. Each of the connectors on the analog camera
input cable is labeled with a BNC number from V1 to
V16. The connected cameras are assigned as “Analog
camera 1,” “Analog camera 2,” and so on, based on the
order of the BNC numbers to which they are connected.
Note
We recommend connecting the cameras in an order that
will make it easy to operate them on the screen.
Note
The white connectors (A1 to A4, 4 total) on the analog
camera input cable are used for audio input.
Connecting the Power Cord
Connect the power cord to the power supply connector.
Attach the safety clip to prevent the power cord from
disconnecting.

Step 2: System Setup
Turn on the unit and configure initial settings with the
Setup Wizard.
Turning On the Unit
Press the power switch to turn on the unit.
The power LED on the front panel is lit green when the
unit is turned on.
When you turn on the unit for the first time, the Setup
Wizard starts automatically.
Continue to the following section, “Configuring Initial
Settings with Setup Wizard.”
Notes
• The fan noise may be loud for about 2 seconds after
turning on the unit. This is not a malfunction.
• Turn on the peripheral devices before turning on the
unit.
Configuring Initial Settings with
Setup Wizard
When you turn on the unit, the Setup Wizard starts after
the following screen appears.

Click [Next].

Read the user license agreement, click [Accept], and
then click [Next].

Select a display language, and click [Next].

Select a language for the keyboard, and click [Next].
↓
Select a time zone, and click [Next].
↓
Set the date and time, and click [Next].
↓
Set the IP address for each server, and click [Next].
↓
Set the IP address for LAN connector 1, and click
[Next].
Note
Connect a network camera to LAN connector 1.
↓
Set the IP address for LAN connector 2, and click
[Next].
↓

Set the IP address for LAN connector 3, and click
[Next].
Caution
Do not configure LAN connectors 1 to 3 to the same
network segment.

Configure settings for monitor 1.
Select the [Dual Head] check box, select [Auto], and
then click [Next].
Note
When an HDMI monitor is connected, the image may be
compressed to fit the screen and text may appear blurry,
even if you adjust the resolution of the monitor and the
resolution of the image data to match. You may be able
to improve the image quality by selecting the [Dot By
Dot] check box so that each pixel of image data is
displayed as one dot on the monitor, without expansion
or compression processes. You may also need to
configure settings on the monitor side. Refer to the
operating instructions for your monitor.

Configure settings for monitor 2.
Select [Auto], and click [Next].
↓
Select which audio connector to use, and click [Next].
When using audio output from an HDMI monitor, select
[HDMI].
↓
Select the RAID type for the internal hard disk drive,
and click [Next].
Note
This screen only appears for models that support RAID
level modification.
Caution
If you change the RAID level, the RAID will be
restructured after the wizard is completed. RAID
restructuring may take a few hours depending on the
selected level and capacity.

Configure partitions for the internal hard disk drive, and
click [Next].

Step 2: System Setup
Specify the number of partitions, and select the
percentage of the total capacity to assign each partition.
This document assumes that you clicked [Next] with this
configuration unchanged at 100%.

Set the server name, and click [Next].
↓
Configure analog camera connection settings, and click
[Next].
Select the serial connector standard to which the camera
you want to control will be connected, and configure
settings such as baud rate and parity bits.
This document assumes that you will not be controlling
pan, tilt, and zoom operations for analog cameras and,
therefore, clicked [Next] with this configuration
unchanged.
(This screen only appears when an NSR-1050H or
NSBK-A16/A16H (optional) is connected.)

Select the video format for the analog cameras to be
connected, and click [Next].
(This screen only appears when an NSR-1050H or
NSBK-A16/A16H (optional) is connected.)

Verify configurations, and click [Next].
↓
Click [Finish] when the restart confirmation message
appears.

The unit restarts.

Step 3: Software Setup
Log on to NSR, and configure basic settings for
automatic camera registration and automatic
scheduling.
Logging On
Enter the user name and password, and click [Logon].
Default user name: admin
Default password: admin
When logon is successful, the Automatic Camera
Registration dialog appears.
Click [No] for now.
For details on automatic camera registration, refer to the
Installation Manual (separate document).
Performing Basic Configuration
Perform basic configuration for automatic camera
registration and automatic scheduling.
Registering Cameras
Follow the instructions of the wizard to configure each
setting.
1 Select [Easy Setup], and click [Next].
The Easy Setup wizard appears.
2 Register the cameras.
If you do not want to register cameras, select [Skip
configuration] and click [Next], and proceed to
step 3.
1Select [Configure], and click [Next].
Note
To return to the previous screen and
reconfigure settings, click [Back].
The Camera Registration screen appears.
2Select the check boxes for the cameras you
want to register, and click [OK].
The cameras are registered in the order that
they appear in the list.
Note
If you clear the check box for a camera that is
already registered and click the [OK] button,
the registration will be canceled.
When registration completes, the following
screen appears.
Images from the camera are displayed.
Click on a text string to enable
text entry modification.

3Click [Finish].
Proceed to “3 Recording Schedule”.
3 Configure recording settings.
If you do not want to configure recording settings,
select [Skip configuration] and click [Next], and
proceed to step 4.
1Select [Configure], select the recording
method, and click [Next].
Automatic Schedule Record
Configuration
Perform schedule recording using settings
automatically configured based on the number
of cameras and storage capacity.
When you select this setting, be sure to also
select [Duration Priority] or [Resolution
Priority].
Duration Priority
Configures schedule recording within the
limits of the storage duration entered.
Resolution Priority
Configures schedule recording using the
cameras’ maximum resolution.
Automatic Alarm Record Configuration
Configures alarm recording using the cameras’
maximum resolution.
Notes
• Schedule recording settings are applied to all
registered cameras.
• The settings configured here will overwrite
any schedule recording settings already
configured.
A Schedule Recording Setting screen appears.
2Verify the automatically configured settings,
and click [OK].
You can change codec and resolution settings
as necessary.

An estimated storage duration also appears for
automatic alarm recording settings.
Proceed to “4 Layout Tour Execution”.
4 Execute the layout tour.
If you do not want to execute the layout tour, select
[Skip configuration] and click [Next], and proceed
to step 5.

1Select [Configure].
2Click [Execute].
3Click [Next].
Proceed to “5 Add User”.
5 Register users, and configure logon passwords and
permission settings for various functions.
If you do not want to register users, select [Skip
configuration] and click [Next], and proceed to
step 6.
1Select [Configure], and click [Next].
The User Management screen appears.
2Click [Add].
The Add User screen appears.
3Configure each setting, and click [OK].
User Name
Enter the user name that will be used to log onto
the NSR. The name can be up to 32 characters
long and consist of alphanumeric characters,
hyphens (-), and underscores (_).
User names are case sensitive.
Password
Enter the password that will be used to log onto
the NSR. The password can be up to 32
characters long and consist of alphanumeric
characters, hyphens (-), and underscores (_).
Passwords are case sensitive.
Confirm Password
Reenter the same password for confirmation.
User Level
Select the permission level to grant the user.
You can only select user level 3 or 4 here.
For details on user levels and permissions, refer
to the User’s Guide (PDF).
The user is added to the list in the User
Management screen.

4Click [Close].
Proceed to “6 Open Ports for External
Network”.
6 Configure settings for opening the port to external
networks.
These settings are required to access the NSR from
an external network.
Click [Skip configuration] for now.
For details on opening the port to external
networks, refer to the Installation Manual (separate
document).
The Complete screen appears.
7 Click [OK].
This completes the setup.
8 The Main screen appears in a 2×2 layout, and
recording starts automatically for all cameras.
Notes
• The recording settings are automatically
configured based on the number of cameras and
storage capacity.
• If you want to change the recording settings, click
(Configuration) at the top right of the Main
screen, and select [Easy Setup] in the Recorder
Settings screen that appears.

Step 4: Verification
Check whether camera images can be monitored in the
“Main” screen, and confirm that the images can be
recorded or played back.
Verifying Monitoring
Check whether images from automatically registered
cameras can be properly monitored.
Verifying Images from a Fifth Camera or Later
Click a monitor frame in which to display the images
(1), and then drag and drop or double-click a camera
(fifth camera or later) from the Camera pane to display
the images (2).

Images from the camera are displayed.
↓
In the same way, check whether images from all
registered cameras can be monitored.
Verifying Image Recording and
Playback
As automatic recording should already be in progress,
verify that “SCHEDULE” appears in the monitor frame.

Step 4: Verification
To play back recordings
Click the monitor frame to which the source camera of
the recordings you want to play back is assigned.
↓
Enter the date and time of the recording you want to play
back, and click [Go].
↓
The recorded images appear in a paused state in the
selected monitor frame.
Click (play) to play back the recorded images.
This concludes basic verification.
To use other NSR features and configure
advanced settings
For details on using pan, zoom, and tilt functions to
control the camera, enabling motion detection and alarm
recording, and using other NSR features, refer to the
User’s Guide (PDF).
