Before operating the unit, please read this manual
thoroughly and retain it for future reference.

Owner’s Record
Your S-AIT library is assigned model number CSM-20S for regulatory compliance certifications. The
number is indicated on the model number label on your library along with the rated voltage and current.
Warning
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose the unit to rain or moisture.
To avoid electrical shock, do not open the cabinet.
Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.
Caution
The mains plug on this equipment must be used to disconnect mains power.
Please ensure that the socket outlet is installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.
Notice
Use the power cord set approved by the appropriate testing organization for the specific countries where this unit is to be
used.

Hinweis

Leitungsquerschnitt kann 0,5mm2betragen wenn die Anschlußleitung eine Länge von 2m nicht überschreitet.
Anderenfalls muß der Leitungsquerschnitt mindestens 0,75mm2betragen.

A certified power supply cord has to be used with this equipment.
The relevant national installation and/or equipment regulations shall be considered.
A certified power supply cord not lighter than ordinary polyvinyl chloride flexible cord according to IEC 60227
(designation H05VV-F 3G 0.75 mm2or H05VVH2-F2 3G 0.75 mm2) shall be used. Alternative a flexible cord be of
synthetic rubber according to IEC 60245 (designation H05RR-F 3G 0.75 mm2) shall be used.

Introduction
Overview
CSM-20S is an S-AIT (Super Advanced Intelligent Tape) library with a built-in
S-AIT drive. Up to 20 cartridge volumes can be set and used. The unit can also
be connected to, and used with, a workstation or server.
S-AIT Technology
The S-AIT library is a highest capacity tape library that makes use of “S-AIT”
(Super Advanced Intelligent Tape) technology. The S-AIT library stores large
amounts of image data on a single half-inch tape cartridge, making it the
industry’s highest capacity tape library.
Helical Scan Recording Technology
Helical scan technology, based on a very stable rotating drum/head platform,
permits accurate and reliable data recording at very high track densities. This
efficient packing density provides the industry’s leading, space-efficient
solution.
Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) Tape
S-AIT media is based on AME technology. This technology represents the
culmination of over 50 years of Sony innovation and experience in magnetic
tape technology. The AME tape formulation, with diamond-like carbon coating,
offers an extraordinary durability and reliability, up to 30,000 media passes, and
an estimated media archival life of up to 30 years.
Remote Memory in Cassette (R-MIC)
The non-volatile R-MIC chip built into the data cartridge provides quick media
loads and allows fast searches of data. The R-MIC chip contains the tape’s
system log, search map and user-definable information, allowing the drive to
advance at high speed directly to any file on the tape.
Reliability
The reliability of the S-AIT drive is in part the due to its innovative features,
such as its automatic head cleaning system and effective “leader block” tape
threading system with simplified tape load path. The drive cooling system is
also isolated from the sealed tape mechanism, thereby preventing airborne
contaminants from entering the tape path and affecting sensitive components.

Product Features
Up to 20 cartridge volumes can be set
Up to 20 S-AIT cartridge volumes can be set. Cartridges can be replaced from
the Import/Export slot on the front panel. Since the S-AIT library has a built-in
bar code reader, bar code labels can be used to manage cartridges.
The following types of cartridges can be used in this library:
CSM-20S/S1 models
• SAIT-1 Cartridge:
2.6:1 data compression: up to 26 TB of data
Without compression: up to 10 TB of data
Up to 12 cartridges can be changed at once with two magazines
With a removable magazine, up to 12 cartridges (2 magazines) can be replaced
at once from the front panel.
Up to two S-AIT drives can be installed
Up to two S-AIT drives can be installed and used. Since S-AIT drives are hot-
swappable units, they can be added or replaced even while the power is on. If
you want to install an additional S-AIT drive, please contact your dealer.
The S-AIT library can be remotely controlled
A browser can be used to configure individual settings. It can also be used to
view library and maintenance information. For details, see the operating
instructions of “S-AIT Library Administration Tool.” Like the Operating
Instructions, you can download it from the Sony Web site.
LVD SCSI-compliant
CSM-20S/S1 models are Ultra 160 LVD SCSI-compliant.
Suitable for rack mounting
With the rack mounting kit, ACY-RKSL (sold separately), the S-AIT library
can be installed on an EIA STANDARD, universal pitch 19-inch rack. (The
height of CSM-20S is five rack units.) Rack mounting kits are available from
your dealer. For specifications of rack mounting kit, refer to the operating
instructions of rack mounting kit. Like the Operating Instructions, you can
download it from the Sony Web site.

Compatible Cartridges
Data Cartridges
Tape cartridges used with the S-AIT library must be marked with the SAIT-1
logo.
Caution
Only use cartridges designed specifically for S-AIT.
Cleaning Cartridges
To clean the read/write heads, use the S-AIT Cleaning Cartridge SAIT1-CL. For
details about cleaning, see “DRV CLEANING” on page 50.
Supported Software
For details about software that can be used with the S-AIT library and supported
operating systems, contact your dealer.
Usage Precautions
Important Information About Safety
Power Precautions
• Only use 100-240 V AC.
• Avoid plugging the unit to the same power outlet as high-current equipment
such as copiers or shredders.
Power Cable Precautions
• Do not crush the cable or place heavy objects on it. If the cable insulation
appears worn or broken, do not use the cable.
• Always unplug the cable by holding the plug. Never pull the cable itself as this
may break it.
• If the unit is not used for a prolonged period, unplug the cable from the power
outlet.

Caution When Setting the Cartridges from the Import/
Export Slot
• The shutter of the Import/Export Slot opens/closes automatically. Do not put
your hand or fingers inside the shutter. It may cause an injury.
Caution When Setting the Cartridges with Magazines
• When you remove a magazine, never put your hand inside the dock while the
library is powered on. If you put your hand at the back of magazines, it may
cause an injury with your hand caught in the dock.
• Do not touch the parts other than magazine lock releases and magazines when
the front door is opened. It may cause a failure of the library.
Important Information About Installation
• With a single drive installed, the S-AIT library weighs approximately 27 kg/
59.5 lbs. At least two people are needed in order to handle the library.
Handling the S-AIT library on your own could result in back injury or other
accidents resulting in injury or damage to the S-AIT library.
Usage Precautions
Environmental Considerations
Do not store or use the unit in locations subject to:
• high humidity
• high temperature
• direct sunlight
• excessive dust
• intense vibrations
• sudden changes in temperature
Proper Ventilation
To avoid overheating, install the unit where air can circulate freely around the
case, and do not cover it during operation. The unit may malfunction if the
internal temperature rises too high.
Avoid Sudden Changes in Temperature
If the unit is moved from a cool to a warm place, or if the room temperature
suddenly rises, moisture may condense inside the case. After a sudden change
in temperature, wait at least one hour before turning on the unit. Turning on the
unit with condensation inside and inserting a cartridge may damage the tape or
the unit.
Abnormal Occurrences
If the unit behaves abnormally, or it begins to smell or smoke, unplug it
immediately from the power outlet and contact your Sony service center.
