Before operating the unit, please read this manual
thoroughly and retain it for future reference.

Owner’s Record
Your S-AIT library is assigned model number CSM-20S for regulatory compliance certifications. The
number is indicated on the model number label on your library along with the rated voltage and current.
Warning
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose the unit to rain or moisture.
To avoid electrical shock, do not open the cabinet.
Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.
Caution
The mains plug on this equipment must be used to disconnect mains power.
Please ensure that the socket outlet is installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.
Notice
Use the power cord set approved by the appropriate testing organization for the specific countries where this unit is to be
used.

A certified power supply cord has to be used with this equipment.

Introduction
Overview
CSM-20S is an S-AIT (Super Advanced Intelligent Tape) library with a built-in
S-AIT drive. Up to 20 cartridge volumes can be set and used. The unit can also
be connected to, and used with, a workstation or server.
S-AIT Technology
The S-AIT library is a highest capacity tape library that makes use of “S-AIT”
(Super Advanced Intelligent Tape) technology. The S-AIT library stores large
amounts of image data on a single half-inch tape cartridge, making it the
industry’s highest capacity tape library.
Helical Scan Recording Technology
Helical scan technology, based on a very stable rotating drum/head platform,
permits accurate and reliable data recording at very high track densities. This
efficient packing density provides the industry’s leading, space-efficient
solution.
Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) Tape
S-AIT media is based on AME technology. This technology represents the
culmination of over 50 years of Sony innovation and experience in magnetic
tape technology. The AME tape formulation, with diamond-like carbon coating,
offers an extraordinary durability and reliability, up to 30,000 media passes, and
an estimated media archival life of up to 30 years.
Remote Memory in Cassette (R-MIC)
The non-volatile R-MIC chip built into the data cartridge provides quick media
loads and allows fast searches of data. The R-MIC chip contains the tape’s
system log, search map and user-definable information, allowing the drive to
advance at high speed directly to any file on the tape.
Reliability
The reliability of the S-AIT drive is in part the due to its innovative features,
such as its automatic head cleaning system and effective “leader block” tape
threading system with simplified tape load path. The drive cooling system is
also isolated from the sealed tape mechanism, thereby preventing airborne
contaminants from entering the tape path and affecting sensitive components.

Product Features
Up to 20 cartridge volumes can be set
Up to 20 S-AIT cartridge volumes can be set. Cartridges can be replaced from
the Import/Export slot on the front panel. Since the S-AIT library has a built-in
bar code reader, bar code labels can be used to manage cartridges.
The following types of cartridges can be used in this library:
CSM-20S/S1 models
• SAIT-1 Cartridge:
2.6:1 data compression: up to 26 TB of data
Without compression: up to 10 TB of data
Up to 12 cartridges can be changed at once with two magazines
With a removable magazine, up to 12 cartridges (2 magazines) can be replaced
at once from the front panel.
Up to two S-AIT drives can be installed
Up to two S-AIT drives can be installed and used. Since S-AIT drives are hot-
swappable units, they can be added or replaced even while the power is on. If
you want to install an additional S-AIT drive, please contact your dealer.
The S-AIT library can be remotely controlled
A browser can be used to configure individual settings. It can also be used to
view library and maintenance information. For details, see the operating
instructions of “S-AIT Library Administration Tool.” Like the Operating
Instructions, you can download it from the Sony Web site.
LVD SCSI-compliant
CSM-20S/S1 models are Ultra 160 LVD SCSI-compliant.
Suitable for rack mounting
With the rack mounting kit, ACY-RKSL (sold separately), the S-AIT library
can be installed on an EIA STANDARD, universal pitch 19-inch rack. (The
height of CSM-20S is five rack units.) Rack mounting kits are available from
your dealer. For specifications of rack mounting kit, refer to the operating
instructions of rack mounting kit. Like the Operating Instructions, you can
download it from the Sony Web site.

Compatible Cartridges
Data Cartridges
Tape cartridges used with the S-AIT library must be marked with the SAIT-1
logo.
Caution
Only use cartridges designed specifically for S-AIT.
Cleaning Cartridges
To clean the read/write heads, use the S-AIT Cleaning Cartridge SAIT1-CL. For
details about cleaning, see “DRV CLEANING” on page 50.
Supported Software
For details about software that can be used with the S-AIT library and supported
operating systems, contact your dealer.
Usage Precautions
Important Information About Safety
Power Precautions
• Only use 100-240 V AC.
• Avoid plugging the unit to the same power outlet as high-current equipment
such as copiers or shredders.
Power Cable Precautions
• Do not crush the cable or place heavy objects on it. If the cable insulation
appears worn or broken, do not use the cable.
• Always unplug the cable by holding the plug. Never pull the cable itself as this
may break it.
• If the unit is not used for a prolonged period, unplug the cable from the power
outlet.

Caution When Setting the Cartridges from the Import/
Export Slot
• The shutter of the Import/Export Slot opens/closes automatically. Do not put
your hand or fingers inside the shutter. It may cause an injury.
Caution When Setting the Cartridges with Magazines
• When you remove a magazine, never put your hand inside the dock while the
library is powered on. If you put your hand at the back of magazines, it may
cause an injury with your hand caught in the dock.
• Do not touch the parts other than magazine lock releases and magazines when
the front door is opened. It may cause a failure of the library.
Important Information About Installation
• With a single drive installed, the S-AIT library weighs approximately 27 kg/
59.5 lbs. At least two people are needed in order to handle the library.
Handling the S-AIT library on your own could result in back injury or other
accidents resulting in injury or damage to the S-AIT library.
Usage Precautions
Environmental Considerations
Do not store or use the unit in locations subject to:
• high humidity
• high temperature
• direct sunlight
• excessive dust
• intense vibrations
• sudden changes in temperature
Proper Ventilation
To avoid overheating, install the unit where air can circulate freely around the
case, and do not cover it during operation. The unit may malfunction if the
internal temperature rises too high.
Avoid Sudden Changes in Temperature
If the unit is moved from a cool to a warm place, or if the room temperature
suddenly rises, moisture may condense inside the case. After a sudden change
in temperature, wait at least one hour before turning on the unit. Turning on the
unit with condensation inside and inserting a cartridge may damage the tape or
the unit.
Abnormal Occurrences
If the unit behaves abnormally, or it begins to smell or smoke, unplug it
immediately from the power outlet and contact your Sony service center.

Front
Front door closed
ADoor Lock Key
Locks the front door using the supplied door lock key.
BFront Door
Opened to set up or replace a set of cartridges with a magazine.
CImport/Export Slot (Mail Slot)
The shutter automatically opens when a command is executed in your
application software. And the shutter automatically closed when a cartridge is
inserted. The port is protected by a shutter that prevents dust from entering the
device.
DControl Buttons
Used to execute commands.
See “Commands” on page 34 for details.
ELCD Panel
Displays the commands and operation mode on two, 16-character lines.
See “LCD Panel and Control Buttons” on page 23 for details.
FError/Warning LED
Lights when an error occurs, and flashes when a warning occurs.
GPower LED
Lights when the unit is on.

Front door opened
ABMagazine
Up to 6 cartridges can be inserted in a magazine. Up to 2 magazines can be
inserted.
CDMagazine Lock Release
Used to replace a magazine. The magazine is unlocked when pushing it down.
Caution
• Do not touch the parts other than magazine lock releases and magazines when
the front door is opened. It may cause a failure of the library.
• When you remove a magazine, never put your hand inside the dock while the
library is powered on. If you put your hand at the back of magazines, it may
cause an injury with your hand caught in the dock.
Note
Cartridges are not assembled when the front door is open.
Make sure to close the front door after replacing magazines. Once the door is
closed, the library is initialized automatically to check the cartridges that are just
set.

Rear
APower Switch
Press this switch to turn the library on and off.
BAC IN Connector
Connect the power cable.
CTransport Screws for Drives (M3)
Place for attaching the transport screws for Drives after removing them during
installation.
DLAN Connector
Connect a 10 Base-T/100 Base-TX network cable here.
EAccess Cover for Service Use
Remove the cover when adding or replacing drives. Do not open this cover. For
service use only. Contact your dealer for information about how to add or
replace drives.
FSCSI Connector 1 (right side), SCSI Connector 2 (left side)
Connect the SCSI cable to this connector. For details about connection, see
“Connecting the SCSI Bus Cable” on page 20.
GRS-232C Connector
For service use only. You do not normally need to use this connector.
HCooling Fan, Ventilation Hole
Be careful not to block the ventilation holes. If you do, the drive in the unit may
overheat, resulting in damage.
IDoor Lock Key
Place for attaching the door lock key for front door.
JTransport Screw 1 (M4, upper), Transport Screw 2 (M4, center),
Transport Screw 3 (M3 with nut, lower)
Place for attaching the transport screws after removing them during installation.

Installation
Overview
This chapter describes the general procedures for positioning the S-AIT library,
connecting it to the host computer, and turning it on. This chapter also describes
initial setup. Installation and setup procedures may vary slightly depending on
your system.
Unpacking
Caution
With a single drive installed, the S-AIT library weighs approximately 27 kg/
59.5 lbs. At least two people are needed in order to handle the library. Handling
the S-AIT library on your own could result in back injury or other accidents
resulting in injury or damage to the S-AIT library.
Note
You will need the box and packing materials if you wish to move or transport
the unit. Retain them for future use.
1 Remove the unit from the box as indicated below.
Remove the packing materials, such as plastic covers and tapes.

2 Inspect the unit for shipping damage.
If there is damage, do not use the unit. Report the damage immediately by
contacting your dealer.
3 Remove transport screws 1 and 2 (M4) on the left side, as illustrated.
4 Remove transport screw 3 (M3 with nut) on the right side, as illustrated.

After opening the package, make sure that all the following items are present.

Notes
• In addition to the above, other items may be included in the package.
• All the items included with the S-AIT library are indicated on the package.

Preparing the Host Computer
Prepare the host computer before installing the S-AIT library.
1 Make sure that a SCSI host adapter card is installed in the host computer.
2 Install all the necessary software supporting the unit on the host computer.
For details about the software that can be used with the S-AIT library and
supported operating systems, contact your dealer.
Note
The S-AIT library is an LVD SCSI device, thus it does not support single-ended.
Make sure that you use an LVD-compliant host bus adapter card.

Installing the S-AIT Library
The S-AIT library weights about 27 kg/59.5 lbs. (with a single drive installed)
and has the following dimensions. With two drives installed, the S-AIT library
weighs approximately 31 kg/68.3 lbs. Make sure that the surface where you will
install the S-AIT library is appropriate before installing the unit.
With the rack mounting kit (sold separately), the S-AIT library can be installed
on an EIA STANDARD 19-inch rack (universal pitch). Contact your dealer for
information about the rack mounting kit.
Note
Install the S-AIT library on a horizontal surface near an AC power outlet. Make
sure that you leave gap of about 150 mm (5.9 in.) behind the rear of the unit to
allow air to circulate.
Recommended positioning of the unit
• Always position the unit horizontally.
• Away from moving air, such as fans, open windows, or air conditioners.
• Away from devices such as facsimiles to avoid toner and paper dust.
Caution
• The S-AIT library should not be stacked. Do not place anything on top of the
unit.
• Do not place the S-AIT library in locations subject to rapid temperature
changes. This could cause condensation to form inside the library, leading to
malfunctions.

Connecting the Power Cable
Note
Make sure that the electrical outlet you use to connect the unit is properly
grounded.
1 Verify the power cable plug to make sure that it matches the AC IN
connector receptacle.
2 Connect one end of the power cable to the AC IN connector and the other
end to the power outlet.
Note
If the S-AIT library does not come with a power cable, make sure that you
connect a power cable appropriate for your country to this connector.
Note
When you remove the cartridge magazine, DO NOT touch inside the unit
while it is on. Doing so may lead to injury.

Connecting the SCSI Bus Cable
Connect the S-AIT library and the host computer with a SCSI cable. This
section describes how to do so. Use an Ultra 160/m SCSI LVD cable commonly
sold in stores to connect the unit to the SCSI bus. The S-AIT library uses a 68-
pin half pitch connector.
Caution
• The S-AIT library does not support single-ended.
• Do not connect the S-AIT library to an HVD (High Voltage Differential)
SCSI bus. If you do, the unit or other devices on the SCSI bus may be
damaged.
• Turn off all the connected devices before connecting the SCSI cable,
including the S-AIT library and the host computer.
• If the S-AIT library is the last or only device on the SCSI bus, make sure that
you connect the supplied terminator to the open connector.
• Make sure that the SCSI connectors are securely connected.
• With LVD (Low Voltage Differential) SCSI, make the total length of the
SCSI cable (internal and external) connecting the host computer and the
device at the end of the SCSI bus shorter than 12 m (39.4 ft.). The S-AIT
library internal cable length is 2 m (80 in.).
• SCSI cables cannot be branched.
A SCSI bus allows you to connect up to fifteen peripherals to the host computer,
including the unit.
Notes
• The default factory settings of the SCSI IDs are as follows.
- Library: 0
- S-AIT Drive 1: 1
- S-AIT Drive 2: 2 (with two drives installed)
• Do not use repetitive SCSI IDs on the same SCSI bus.
• For details about the SCSI ID settings, see “Setting the SCSI ID” (page 27).
1 Make sure that the host computer and the S-AIT library are off.
2 Connect the SCSI cable and terminator as shown below.
