are located at the name plate on the bottom
of the unit. Record the serial number in the
space provided below. Refer to these
numbers whenever you call upon your Sony
dealer regarding this product.

Note about the battery terminal
The battery terminal of this unit (the
connector for battery packs and battery
chargers (AC adaptors)) is a consumable
part.
Power may not be supplied to the unit
properly if the pins of the battery terminal
are bent or deformed by shock or vibrations,
or if they become corroded due to
prolonged outdoor use.

HDD Handling
Precautions
This unit is equipped with a hard disk drive
(called “HDD” below). An HDD is a
delicate and sensitive data storage device
that can be damaged by shocks, vibrations,
static electricity, high temperatures, high
humidity, and noise, resulting in damage to
data in the HDD or failure of the HDD to
record properly. Read the following
precautions carefully before using the unit,
and handle the unit with care.
Protect from excessive shock and
vibrations
Exposure to excessive shock or vibrations
can damage the HDD and destroy data
stored in the HDD.
• Although the HDD in this unit is
protected by shock absorbing material, it
can still be damaged by exposure to
excessive shocks. Be sure store the unit in
a shock-resistant container when you
detach and transport it. When handling
the unit, be careful not to drop it or throw
it.
• When you place the unit on a desk or
other surface, place it so that it rests
stably on the feet at all four corners, in a
location where it is in no danger of
tipping over or falling off. Data in the
HDD may be damaged if the unit tips
over or falls off the desk. If you think the
unit may have been subjected to
excessive shock, check to be sure that it is
operating properly before using it.
• Do not place the unit near equipment that
generates vibrations.
Do not use in areas of low
atmospheric pressure
Do not use the HDD in areas of low
atmospheric pressure (areas 5,000 m
(16,400 feet) or more above sea level).
Doing so can damage the unit, destroy data,
or result in failure to record properly.
Do not use the unit at elevations of 5,000 m
(16,400 feet) or more above sea level or in
environments where the atmospheric
pressure is 54 kPa (0.5 atm) or lower.
Do not use in high-noise
environments
When the unit is used in an environment
subject to loud noise, the HDD may fail to
record properly due to vibration or shock.
Power off before disconnecting
battery pack or battery charger
(AC adaptor)
Do not remove the battery pack or
disconnect the battery charger (AC adaptor)
during recording or playback. Inadvertent
removal can destroy data in the HDD.
Before removing the battery pack or
disconnecting the battery charger (AC
adaptor), check to be sure that the unit is
powered off (the POWER indicator is off).
Use within specified temperature
and humidity ranges
Store and use the unit only in locations
where the temperature and humidity are
within the specified storage and operating
ranges. The HDD may fail to record
properly in environments where the
temperature is too high or too low, and use
in such environments may damage the unit.
The unit is equipped with a sensor to
measure the ambient temperature and may
stop operating when the temperature is too
low or too high. The indicators allow you to
check the temperature detected by the unit.
If the unit stops operating because the
detected temperature is out of the operating
range, wait until the temperature returns to

the operating range before using the unit
again.
Save video data to archive media
To guard against inadvertent data loss,
regular saving of video data to archive
media is recommended.
Destroy or erase data before
disposal
Before selling the unit or giving it to
someone else, you should take steps to
make it harder to recover previously
recorded data, for example by filling the
entire HDD with data shot in a quiet place
with the lens cover on. Note that data in the
HDD may not be completely erased when
the HDD is formatted.
If you plan to dispose of the unit, physical
destruction is recommended. You can make
it very difficult to recover previously
recorded data by physically destroying the
internal HDD.

This unit is a Professional Harddisk Unit for
Sony XDCAM EX camcorders and
recorders. It is equipped with a 1.8-inch,
220 GB hard disk.

Features
Long recording times on 1.8-inch,
220 GB HDD
The unit is equipped with a 220 GB HDD
that allows for long recording times. You
can select between using the HDD as a
single 220 GB drive or as three 73 GB
drives, based on the connected equipment.

The unit is also equipped with
CYBERCAPTURE™ 3) technology,
enabling it to record up to a maximum of
730 minutes in HQ-mode.
Its high-capacity lithium ion battery pack
allows up to approximately 12 hours of
continuous operation in the camera’s
recording mode.
3) CYBERCAPTURE
Software control technology for hard disk
drives that optimizes the recording and
playback of AV data. By enabling high
effective throughput even under stressful
environmental conditions (temperature,
vibration, shocks, etc.), it helps to suppress
dropped frames.
HDD protected from drop shocks
An HDD damping system featuring a newly
developed shock absorbing material
protects the HDD against falls from as high
as 150 cm (4.9 feet) 4).
The unit is also equipped with a 3G sensor
to protect the internal HDD against fall
shock. The 3G sensor detects differences in
acceleration and momentarily retracts the
HDD heads when acceleration rises above a
certain level.
Up to nine seconds can be recorded in
shockproof memory while the heads are
retracted.

Integration with camcorder by
special shoe adaptor
The special shoe adaptor allows the unit to
be safely and easily installed on the
camcorder. The mounting angle is
adjustable, allowing the unit to be installed
in the most convenient way for your
shooting style.
Begins recording instantaneously
The unit operates in tandem with the
recording and playback functions of the
XDCAM EX camcorder or recorder when
either recording device is turned on. Built-
in buffer memory allows the unit to begin
recording instantaneously, without waiting
for the HDD activation.
Using the CD-ROM Manual
The supplied CD-ROM includes versions
of the Operating Instructions for this unit in
Japanese, English, French, German, Italian,
Spanish, Korean, Dutch, Portuguese and
Russian, in PDF format.
Preparations
The following program must be installed on
your computer in order to read the
Operating Instructions contained in the CD-
ROM.

Parts
ABattery release button
Releases the battery pack. Keep this button
pressed and slide out to remove the battery
pack.
BBattery slot
Mount the battery pack here.
CBATTERY indicator
Flashes at 1-second intervals when
remaining battery capacity is low. Flashes
at 0.5-second intervals when remaining
battery capacity declines further to the point
where the unit cannot operate.

DPOWER indicator
Lights in green when the unit is powered on.
For more information on this indication, see “Status

EACCESS indicator
Lights in orange while the HDD is being
accessed.

FDC IN (DC power input) connector
Supply power to this unit by connecting the
DC power output cord that is supplied with
the BC-U1 or BC-U2 battery charger.
Attach the protective cover when this
connector is not in use.
GPower switch
Power the unit on by pressing the switch for
about three seconds. Power the unit off in
the same way, by pressing the switch for
about three seconds.

settings.

If you change the switch setting, the change
will be detected the next time you turn on
the unit, and all of the indicators
(BATTERY, POWER, and ACCESS) will
flash. Perform the mode switching
operation while the indicators are flashing.

Mounting the Battery Pack
Use this unit with a battery pack mounted.
The BP-U30 Battery Pack is recommended.
You can also use the BP-U60 Battery Pack,
but be sure to observe the following
precautions when doing so.
• Depending on the installation position,
this battery pack may interfere with
operation of the camcorder.
• The BP-U60 is heavier than the BP-U30.
If this unit should be dropped with the
BP-U60 mounted, the impact is greater
than when the BP-U30 is mounted.
Handle this unit with care, being careful
not to drop it or allow it to tip over.
Note
This unit does not have a recharging
function. Before mounting the battery pack,
charge it with the special BC-U1 or BC-U2
battery charger.
For information on how to charge the battery pack,
refer to the Operating Instructions of the battery
charger.

To mount a battery pack
Insert the battery pack into the battery slot,
and slide it in to lock.
To remove the battery pack
Keep the battery release button pressed and
slide out to remove.
Selecting the Drive Mode
Select whether to use the unit’s HDD as a
single 220 GB drive or three 73 GB drives
using the MODE SELECT switch.
The modes that can be used will differ
depending on the model of the device to
which the unit is connected.
[220GB] mode can be used with the
following model.
•PMW-EX1R
•PMW-350K
•PMW-350L
•PMW-320K
•PMW-320L
•PMW-F3K
•PMW-F3L
•PMW-500
When using the following models, use
[73GB×3] mode.
•PMW-EX1
•PMW-EX3
•PMW-EX30
Select the drive mode before turning on the
power.
Note
You will need to reformat the HDD

1Set the MODE SELECT switch while

power switch again for about one
second, and release the switch when
the indicators remain steadily lit.
If you do not press the power switch
within 30 seconds, the unit will turn
off.
4Press and hold the power switch again
until all of the indicators turn off
(about 10 seconds), and then release
the switch.
After you release the switch, all of the
indicators will light again.

All of the indicators will light, and the
mode switching process will begin.
When the process is complete, the unit
turns off.
6Press and hold the power switch for
about three seconds to turn the unit on.
The selected drive mode is enabled.
Connect the unit to a camcorder or
recorder, and format the HDD.
For more information on formatting, see
“Formatting” (page 18).
If you accidentally changed the
MODE SELECT switch
When all of the indicators are flashing,
leave the unit alone for about 30 seconds
and wait for the unit to turn off. After the
unit turns off, return the MODE SELECT
switch to its original setting.
Selecting the drive
When using the unit’s HDD as three 73 GB
drives, select which of the drives to use (A,
B, or C) using the DRIVE SELECT switch.
1Press the power switch while holding
down the DRIVE SELECT switch.
The DRIVE SELECT indicator (A, B,
or C) of the currently selected drive
will flash.
2Press the DRIVE SELECT switch to
select a drive to use.
Each press of the DRIVE SELECT
switch changes the drive selection in
order from A tB tC tA.
If the unit is not operated for five
seconds, the drive selection will be
applied, and the DRIVE SELECT
indicator of the selected drive and the
POWER indicator will remain lit.
Note
The DRIVE SELECT switch cannot
be used when the POWER indicator
is lit. You must select the drive
before the unit is turned on.
Installing on the
Camcorder
Note
When installing this unit onto the
PMW-EX1, be sure to consult your Sony
representative.
Use the shoe adaptor and PHU connection
cable to install this unit on the camcorder.
Camcorder installation

To use this unit, install it on the accessory
shoe of your supported camcorder.
The following illustrations show the typical
mounting positions.

Depending on the installation position, this
unit may come into contact with other
accessories mounted on the camcorder, or
interfere with operation of the camcorder.
Be careful when adjusting the installation
angle and the position of the cable.
Installation on the camcorder
1Attach the shoe adaptor to this unit.
Align the hooks of the shoe adaptor
with the grooves of the attachment
ring, insert them into the grooves, and
then turn the shoe adaptor clockwise.
Note
To remove the shoe adaptor, hold
down the release knob of the shoe
adaptor and turn the shoe adaptor
counterclockwise.
2Adjust the angle of the shoe adaptor.
The shoe adaptor attachment angle can
be adjusted across the range from 0
degrees (horizontal) to 45 degree. To
change the angle, turn the dial of the
shoe adaptor to loosen it. Adjust the
angle, then turn the dial in the opposite
direction to lock it.
3Mount the shoe adaptor on the
camcorder.
Mount the shoe adaptor on the
accessory shoe of the camcorder, and
lock it with the lock lever.

Video on This Unit
Select the drive
When the MODE SELECT switch is set to
[73GB×3], use the DRIVE SELECT switch
to select the drive that the camcorder
records to or plays back from.
Power the unit on
After turning on the camcorder, power the
unit on by pressing the power switch and
holding it for at least three seconds.
The POWER indicator flashes and
initialization starts. The POWER indicator
lights in green when initialization finishes
and the unit is ready to record. The
camcorder recognizes this unit as a hard
disk inserted into one of its card slots. When
the camcorder recognizes this unit, the
media status (A or B icon) that corresponds
to the slot in which the PHU connection
cable is inserted appears on the camcorder’s
LCD monitor, just as it would for an SxS
memory card.
Press the SLOT SELECT button of the
camcorder to select the card slot where this
unit is connected.
Start recording
Recording to this unit starts when you press
the REC button on the camcorder.
For information on shooting methods, refer to the
operating instructions of the camcorder.

This unit supports the Quick Motion
shooting mode of the XDCAM EX
camcorder, but it does not support Slow
Motion shooting. Normal recording is not
guaranteed with Slow Motion shooting.
Play back video
By pressing the PLAY button on the
camcorder, you can play back recorded
video clips.
For information on playback, refer to the operating
instructions of the camcorder.
Formatting
As this unit is formatted at the time of
shipping, it is ready for use immediately
after purchase. However, if you change the
drive mode using the MODE SELECT
switch, formatting will be required.
To format the unit’s HDD, connect the unit
to a camcorder or recorder.
1When using the unit in [73GB×3]
mode, select the drive to format.
2Connect the unit to the camcorder or
recorder.
3Turn on the unit.
4Confirm that the unit is recognized by
the camcorder or recorder, and
perform formatting from the
camcorder or recorder.
Perform formatting for each drive.

Note
Depending on your camcorder model, the
“Cannot Use Media (A)/Unsupported File
System” message may appear when you
connect this unit to the camcorder
immediately after changing the drive mode.
Even if this message appears, you can still
perform formatting from the camcorder’s
menu screens.
Recording and playback
precautions
Recording operation in high-
vibration environments
• If the unit is exposed to a constant
vibration during operation, recording or
playback may be stopped to protect the
HDD. In such cases, integrity of the data
during vibration is not guaranteed.
• If recording is stopped due to vibration,
you may need to restore the HDD to start
recording again after removing the
source of vibration. However, the data
recorded immediately before the forced
stop may be lost even after HDD
restoration. The duration of data that
cannot be restored differs depending on
the camcorder model and recording
mode.
For more information on restoring the HDD,
refer to the section on memory card restoration in
the operating instructions of your camcorder.
Recording operation and data
integrity when battery power is low
or power is cut off
• When the remaining battery capacity is
low, the BATTERY indicator flashes. If
you continue to use the unit, the unit
automatically stops recording for safety
and eventually powers itself off.
For more information on the BATTERY indicator
flashing, see “Status Indications” (page 24).
• If the battery pack or battery charger is
disconnected during recording, integrity
of the data recorded is not guaranteed. All
of the data stored on the HDD may be
damaged.

• If the PHU connection cable is
disconnected during recording, recording
will stop. The data recorded up to that
point is stored, but integrity of such data
is not guaranteed.
• If the power is accidentally turned off
during recording, recording will stop.
However, the data recorded up to that
point is stored normally.
• The unit may stop operating if it detects
that the ambient temperature is lower or
higher than the HDD guaranteed
operation temperature range. This is done
to protect the unit. If this occurs, wait
until the ambient temperature returns to
the guaranteed operation temperature
range before trying to use the unit. See
“Specifications” (page 22) for the
guaranteed operation temperature range.
• If the unit stops responding during power
off (including automatic power off
because of low battery power), power the
unit off by pressing the power switch and
holding it for at least three seconds.
However, recorded data is not guaranteed
in this case.
Forcibly cutting power by disconnecting
the battery pack or battery charger may
damage the unit.
About the drop detection function
This unit is equipped with a 3G sensor to
protect the internal HDD when the unit is
dropped or overturned. The sensor detects
differences in acceleration and may activate
the drive protection function if you jump
down from a high place, run down a flight
of stairs, or otherwise cause the unit to
detect acceleration similar to that of the unit
being dropped. In such cases, the integrity
of the recorded data is not guaranteed. In
addition, the drive protection function may
not activate if a drop is combined with
vibration and flipping of the unit.
Playing Back Video Clips
on a Recorder
When you connect this unit to a
PMW-EX30 recorder, video clips stored on
the unit can be displayed as thumbnail
(reduced size) images and played back on
the LCD panel of the recorder.
Note
If the MODE SELECT switch is set to
[220GB], the PMW-EX30 will not
recognize the unit and playback will not be
possible.
1Connect this unit to the BC-U1 or
BC-U2 battery charger using the DC
power output cord supplied with the
battery charger.
Connect the AC power cord of the
battery charger, and set the mode select
switch on the battery charger to the DC
OUT.
For details, refer to the operating instructions
of the battery charger.
2Connect this unit to the recorder with
the PHU connection cable.
Insert the card of the PHU connection
cable into one of the card slots on the
recorder.
Connect the connector of the PHU
connection cable to the USB connector
on this unit.

Copying Video Clips to
Editing Equipment
You can connect this unit to a video editing
computer, and copy the video clip stored on
this unit to the computer. The XDCAM EX
Clip Browsing Software supplied with the
camcorder must be installed in the
computer.
Connecting to a computer
We recommend using the BC-U1 or BC-U2
battery charger to ensure a steady supply of
AC power during data transfer.
Note
Power cannot be supplied from the
computer.
1Connect this unit to the BC-U1 or
BC-U2 battery charger using the DC
power output cord supplied with the
battery charger.
Connect the AC power cord of the
battery charger, and set the mode select
switch on the battery charger to the DC
OUT.
For details, refer to the operating instructions
of the battery charger.
2Connect this unit to the computer using
the USB cable supplied with the
camcorder.
Note
When you connect this unit to the
computer, make sure that the USB
connector on the computer is the right
shape and that the USB connector on
the cable is oriented correctly.
