HDD Handling
Precautions
This unit is equipped with a hard disk drive
(called “HDD” below). An HDD is a
delicate and sensitive data storage device
that can be damaged by shocks, vibrations,
static electricity, high temperatures, high
humidity, and noise, resulting in damage to
data in the HDD or failure of the HDD to
record properly. Read the following
precautions carefully before using the unit,
and handle the unit with care.
Protect from excessive shock and
vibrations
Exposure to excessive shock or vibrations
can damage the HDD and destroy data
stored in the HDD.
• Although the HDD in this unit is
protected by shock absorbing material, it
can still be damaged by exposure to
excessive shocks. To prevent exposure to
shocks, be sure to store the unit in its
cartridge case when transporting it as a
stand-alone device. When handling the
unit, be careful not to drop it or throw it.
• When you place the unit on a desk or
other surface, place it so that it rests
stably on all four corners, in a location
where it is in no danger of tipping over or
falling off. Data in the HDD may be
damaged if the unit tips over or falls off
the desk. If you think the unit may have
been subjected to excessive shock, check
to be sure that it is operating properly
before using it.
• Do not place the unit near equipment that
generates vibrations.
Do not use in areas of low
atmospheric pressure
Do not use the HDD in areas of low
atmospheric pressure (areas 3,000 m
(9,843 feet) or more above sea level).
Doing so can damage the unit, destroy data,
or result in failure to record properly.
Do not use the unit at elevations of 3,000 m
(9,843 feet) or more above sea level or in
environments where the atmospheric
pressure is 0.7 atm or lower.
Do not use in high-noise
environments
When the unit is used in an environment
subject to loud noise, the HDD may fail to
record properly due to vibration or shock.
Power off before disconnecting AC
adaptor
Do not disconnect the AC adaptor during
recording or playback. Inadvertent removal
can destroy data in the HDD. Before
disconnecting the AC adaptor, check to be
sure that the unit is powered off (the
POWER indicator is off).
Use within specified temperature
and humidity ranges
Store and use the unit only in locations
where the temperature and humidity are
within the specified storage and operating
ranges. The HDD may fail to record
properly in environments where the
temperature is too high or too low, and use
in such environments may damage the unit.
Save video data to archive media
To guard against inadvertent data loss,
regular saving of video data to archive
media is recommended.

Destroy or erase data before
disposal
Note that data in the HDD may not be
completely erased when the HDD is
formatted. We recommend using
commercially available data erasure
software to completely erase all data on the
HDD before selling or giving the unit to
someone else.
If you plan to dispose of the unit, physical
destruction is recommended. You can make
it very difficult to recover previously
recorded data by physically destroying the
HDD.

Features
The PXU-HC240 is a removable 240 GB
HDD cartridge that can be installed in a
PXU-MS240 Mobile Storage Unit. SxS
memory cards used when recording with an
XDCAM EX-series camcorder can be
inserted into the PXU-MS240, and the SxS
memory card data can be copied onto this
unit. The HDD allows you to back up hours
of recorded data with storage of up to about
800 minutes of data in HQ mode (about
1,040 minutes in SP mode). The unit can be
stored in the supplied cartridge case when
not in use. This can be useful when using
the unit as temporary storage media for pre-
editing data, for example.
In addition to installing the unit in a
PXU-MS240, you can also connect the unit
directly to a computer via a USB cable.
Note
Recording times may vary depending on the
camera model and configurations used for
recording. Use the recording times
mentioned above as a reference when using
XDCAM EX-series camcorder models.

ALabel attachment areas
Affix the supplied label sheets to these
areas. There are three label attachment
areas on the unit.
Write information such as the content of the
recorded data on the label sheets, and use
them to keep cartridges organized.
BPOWER indicator
Lights green while power is supplied via the
AC adaptor.
CACCESS indicator
Lights orange during HDD access.
DUSB connector
Connect to a computer using a USB cable.
EHDD cartridge connector
When the unit is installed in a PXU-MS240,
data is transferred via this connector.
FDC IN connector
Connect the AC adaptor here to supply
power to the unit.

Computers
You can connect this unit directly to a
computer and transfer data stored on the
unit to the computer for editing and other
operations.
When using this cartridge as a stand-alone
device, connect the AC adaptor to the DC
IN connector on the unit, connect the power
cord to the AC adaptor, and connect to an
AC power source.
For safety, use only the Sony AC adaptor
listed below.
• AC-NB12A AC Adapter (supplied with
the PXU-MS240)
Note
Power cannot be supplied from the computer.
Connecting the Computer
1Connect the AC adaptor supplied with
the PXU-MS240 to this unit.
2Connect this unit to the computer using
a USB cable.
When the unit is connected, the
computer recognizes it as one of its
hard disks.
In Windows, the unit is added as a
local disk in My Computer.
In Macintosh, a “NO NAME” or
“Untitled” device icon is created on the
desktop. (You can change the device
name freely.)

installed on your computer to edit the
clips stored on the unit directly.
For more information on how to edit, refer to
the operating instructions of the video editing
software.

1If you are editing data on the computer,
quit the video editing software.
2Disable connection to the unit from the
computer.
For Windows
1Click the “Safely Remove
Hardware” icon on the Windows
taskbar.
2Select “Safely Remove USB Mass
Storage Device” from the menu that
appears.
3After the message notifying that it
is safe appears, confirm that the
ACCESS indicator on the unit is off
and disconnect the USB cable.
For Macintosh
1Drag the icon for the unit to the
trash can (eject icon) on your
desktop. If the icon for the unit is in
the Finder, click the eject icon next
to it.
2After the icon disappears, confirm
that the ACCESS indicator on the
unit is off and disconnect the USB
cable.

Cartridge Case
When storing or carrying the unit, be sure to
store it in its cartridge case. By doing so,
you can reduce exposure shocks during
storage and carrying.
Storing the unit
When you store the unit in the cartridge
case, be sure to close the case securely.
When inserting the unit into the cartridge
case, be sure to align the indicators on the
unit with the protrusion on the case as
shown below. If the unit is inserted in any
other direction, the case will not close.
Using the case card
A case card is inserted in the cover of the
cartridge case.
You can write information such as the
content of the recorded data on the reverse
side of this card. Use this to keep cartridges
organized.
Open the cartridge case fully when
removing or inserting the case card.
Attaching label sheets
When attaching label sheets to the unit, be
sure to affix them completely within the
label attachment areas.
There are three label attachment areas on
the unit.
Note
If you affix the label sheets to areas other than the
label attachment areas, the label sheets may
become an obstruction when installing the unit
into a PXU-MS240.
