XperiaTM Z2 Tablet Quick Reference Guide
The world's slimmest and
lightest waterproof tablet*
The best of Sony’s TV and audio
technologies
XperiaTM Z2 Tablet: Introduction
Xperia Z2 Tablet is the world's slimmest and lightest
waterproof tablet with Sony's best ever entertainment
experience. Designed for ultimate comfort, Xperia Z2
Tablet is easy to hold with just one hand. The 10.1"
Full HD TRILUMINOS display is the world's first tablet
display with Live Colour LED. Combined with The
world’s first digital noise cancelling technology built
into a tablet***, it makes for the ultimate viewing
experience. Like its predecessor Xperia Tablet Z,
Xperia Z2 Tablet follows Sony's OmniBalance design
and is waterproof with The world’s first tablet display
with Live Colour LED**
This review guide is designed to help you (media and bloggers) quickly understand and make the
most of some of the key features. Also provided are some quick, easy to use assets that you are
free to use as you like.
A viewing experience that's true to life
Whether you're watching movies or playing
games, Xperia Z2 Tablet uses the latest Sony TV
display technologies, including The world’s first
tablet display with Live Colour LED** for
increased colour depth and gradation. No
matter what angle you look at Xperia Z2 Tablet,
IPS technology ensures you get sharp images
and accurate colours.
The 10.1" Full HD display uses TRILUMINOS ™
Display technology to create a wider palette of
rich natural colours, whilst intelligent backlight
technology works to reproduce more tones and
textures. The overall effect is one of rich, authentic
colours with subtle tones, including hard-to-reproduce reds, blues and greens. Combined with
TRILUMINOS technology, LEDs emit purer reds and greens, which make for a brighter and more
uniform light with true colours of the source. Live Colour LED gives you the world's deepest and
most intense colours on a tablet display, capturing true colours without the risk of oversaturation.
The X-Reality for mobile picture engine analyses
images, reproduces lacking pixels, optimises
quality and enhances composition and contrast to
produce a cleaner, clearer image. Noise reduction
features work on images prior to up-scaling
(automatic conversion of a low-resolution image
or video to high-resolution), while our display technology analyses each image to optimise pixels,
texture, outline, colour, contrast and noise. All this combines to give Xperia Tablet 2 the world's
fastest processor in a tablet****
It reproduces pixels that are lacking so you get
sharp images, improved texture and sharpened
outlines, reproduced vividness of images in
original colour, and decreased noise that can
occur in high-motion footage in low-light
conditions.
What does all this mean? It means that images
are reproduced to actually look how you
remember them, and videos look so good you’ll
forget you’re watching them on a tablet.
Suggested demos:
If you want to demo the X-Reality Engine, you can use the settings for ON and OFF, and then
screen capture (long press on the power button and volume down key simultaneously) so that you
can easily compare the results. There is a split screen shot here that demonstrates the difference
made by X-Reality for mobile.
From the engineers:
"The combination of the two technologies
tunes the display to "natural" for human
skins and "vivid" for standout colours.
Traditionally, these factors usually force
emphasis one way or another, but the
algorithm balances both to have equal
visual impact."
- Takashi Ozaka, TRILUMINOS™engineer.
The world's first digital noise cancelling technology in
a tablet***
Noise cancelling technology cancels out 98% of all
ambient noise and is supported by Xperia Z2 Tablet,
meaning you can hear noise-free sound with Digital Noise
Cancelling Headphones MDR-NC31EM. The headphones
sample surrounding noise through a microphone, and
combined with the DNC circuit in the tablet, you'll
experience clear, noise-free sound. Active noise control is
the technology that removes the lower frequency portions
of noise, preventing high-frequency noise from ever
reaching the ear.
Add to that our S-Force®Surround technology that gives
you a powerful surround sound effect without the need for
multiple stand-alone speakers. Xperia Z2 Tablet has four
3D surround sound speakers instead of two, and we've
carefully placed the speakers so that your hands don’t
block the sound when you hold your tablet. You'll hear
dynamic sound as it was intended at over 100dB.
A truly amazing camera
Xperia Z2 Tablet's 8MP camera has been optimised to take stunning HD shots in any light. It
features the Exmor RS™for mobile sensor that produces pictures with low noise level, even in low
light conditions.
A bigger sensor = clearer photos. Xperia Z2
Tablet's Exmor RS™for mobile sensor is
similar to that used in Sony's Cyber-shot
digital cameras. Sony's sensor tech ensures
more pixels can fit on the sensor and that
each pixel on the sensor can be larger than
usual. The result? The camera can capture
more light, image noise is heavily reduced
and quicker exposure times give sharper
images.
Digital noise cancelling works by
attaching two small microphones to the
earpieces of the MDR NC31EM
headset. These feed sound back to the
innovative software in Xperia Z2 Tablet
that reads it, turns the sound waves
upside-down and plays it back into the
earpiece. When the two sound waves
meet, because they are the opposite of
each other, they cancel each other out,
and in this way we are able to eliminate
98% of background noise. We
combine this technology with a bigger
driver in the earpieces to produce a
better, clearer sound - all of which is a
long way of saying you get to
experience your audio in brilliant clarity
without being distracted by
background hum.
Superior auto is the default mode for Xperia Z2 Tablet and is designed to help everyday
photographers get it right by using intelligent scene recognition technology to make sure you
always shoot with the optimal camera settings. For example, Superior auto recognises up to 36
scene types and automatically adjusts the settings. It also turns HDR on or off depending on the
scene; with HDR mode, the camera takes multiple pictures with varied exposures and merges
these to make photos look natural. For the more advanced photographers, Z2 Tablet camera also
comes with a full set of manual settings, which allows you to control white balance, scene selection,
as well as over- and under-exposure control.
Xperia Z2 Tablet is perfect for video calling with its combination of Exmor RS for mobile sensor and
the 2MP HD front camera.
Apps that take your camera further
With a full range of innovative apps, Xperia Z2
Tablet offers a camera experience that goes
beyond traditional image making. Sony’s Xperia
camera app tray was announced alongside Xperia
Z1 and now boasts a wealth of great apps
designed to deliver new functions.
To check out the range of available apps, hit the
button in the bottom left of the camera's user
interface then hit the plus sign at the top of the next
screen. You’ll be taken to a selection of the best
smart social camera apps and from there you can
install them in the normal way through the Google
Play store.
Why we call it "the world's slimmest and lightest
waterproof tablet*"
Xperia Z2 Tablet is designed with premium materials
according to Sony's OmniBalance design language. We've
made sure it's not only beautiful to look at, but extremely
portable and comfortable to hold with just one hand.
Weighing just under 450g and measuring 6.4mm, it is safe to
say Xperia Z2 Tablet is the world's lightest and slimmest
waterproof tablet.
The edges are rounded
and smooth, while all
surfaces have reflective
surfaces held together
by a skeleton frame. The
10.1" display is scratch
resistant and the body is
entirely waterproof so
that you can enjoy a
movie on your tablet
while having a bath or
recording a video in the
pool.
The IP55/IP58 waterproof and dust-resistant rating means it's protected against the ingress of dust
and can be kept under 1.5 metres of freshwater for up to 30 minutes, provided all ports and covers
are firmly shut. Sony has also listened to feedback from earlier releases and included wet finger
tracking, an open headphones jack and a dedicated camera button. Long pressing on this button
opens the camera app instantly.
If you want to demo the waterproofness and underwater use of the camera, simply drop the phone
into fresh water and start taking pictures. Pick the phone up from the water and, without wiping off
the water, start using the phone as normal. Some design-focussed images are included here.
IP ratings for phones:
IP ratings are made of two
numbers the dust rating (0 - 6)
and the water resistance rating
(0 - 8)

Walkman, Movies, PlayStation and Album apps. The
latest versions of Walkman and Movies come with Sony's

entertainment wherever you go. Through the PlayStation

DUAL SHOCK 3 PlayStation™Controller for intuitive game

The world's most powerful tablet
Xperia Z2 Tablet combines the fastest processor in a tablet with Sony's latest battery saving
technology, Battery STAMINA Mode 3.0 for fast and long-lasting performance. The Qualcomm
Snapdragon™ 801 quad-core processor delivers speed of up to 2.3 GHz, which means ultra-fast
performance and breath taking graphics. Taking the concept of speed further, Xperia Z2 Tablet
supports super-fast 4G LTE networks, giving you access to entertainment anytime, anywhere,
meaning you get 4G user speeds that are twice as fast. The Adreno 330 GPU delivers a 20%
performance improvement compared to the previous generation; you can enjoy sharp, realistic
mobile 3D gaming with enhanced graphics capabilities.
The processor does not drain the battery as it's asynchronous, which means each core is powered
independently. Xperia Z2 Tablet receives the right amount of power when needed, without wasting
power when not.
A longer-lasting battery
Three things are in focus in Sony’s approach to battery life in
Xperia Z2 Tablet:
1. The asynchronous technology in the SD801 produces less
heat and uses less power.
2. The 6000mAh battery is designed to handle heavy-duty
usage, and provides outstanding standby time.
3. Battery STAMINA Mode 3.0 significantly improves standby time by 15% and offers you over 100
hours of music playback time. When the display is switched off, all the functions that don’t need to
be running are automatically switched off, whilst keeping the important functions (such as
notifications) switched on. As soon as the power button is pressed to wake up the screen,
everything is up and running again.
Suggested demos:
Both ZenBound (family friendly) and ShadowGun (not so much) are well known for being processor
and battery intensive games. It’s also worth comparing the estimated battery life stat on the Power
Management screen in the settings with STAMINA mode turned off and on. There’s also a video
here that goes through the basics of Battery Stamina Mode
Did you know?
The Battery in Xperia Z2
Tablet delivers:
Music listening time
up to 188 hours
Video playback time
up to 13 hours
Standby time (LTE)
up to 1200 hours
