The projection system uses HIGH PRESSURE XENON
SHORT-ARC LAMPS as a light source. These lamps
have a high internal pressure. Depending upon the lamp,
the internal pressure can exceed 10 ATM or 147 PSI, even
when not in operation. In addition, Xenon arc lamps can
burst when not in operation causing serious injuries! It is
critical to follow the lamp manufacturer’s safety
instructions when handling Xenon arc lamps. Always wear
eye/face and body protection when handling Xenon arc
lamps.
Large XENON short-arc lamps are shipped inside special
protective shields which will contain the envelope
fragments if the lamp is dropped and explodes. The shield
is removed once the lamp is installed in the lamp housing.
When the lamp reaches the end of its useful life, the
protective shield is put back on the lamp, and the spent
lamp is then removed from the equipment and disposed of.
Note: The risk of explosion increases as the lamp is used.
For this reason, it is important to observe the
manufacturer's recommended operating life limits.
Refer to the handling and disposal instructions for the
XENON ARC LAMPS which were provided by the
manufacturer and included with the lamp.
Ultraviolet Radiation
All XENON short-arc lamps generate significant amounts
of ultraviolet radiation while in operation. Xenon has
strong spectral lines in the UV bands, and these readily
pass through the fused quartz lamp envelope. Projector
systems should always be operated with all covers closed
even when testing the system and content security is not an
issue.
The SRX Controller application exercises direct control
over the projector via the projector’s serial control port.
Operations using the SRX Controller can be in conflict
with operations using the Projectionist Terminal or the
SMS Controller. The SRX Controller application should
not be used at the same time the Projectionist Terminal or
SMS Controller is in operation. Once changes using the
SRX Controller are completed, REFRESH the Projector
Data (Maintenance screen) to the SMS Server stored data.

• Valid Use Dates
The right to present any specific show is a complex
issue and may involve licensing restrictions for any or
all Content Elements. The Valid Use Dates group
indicates the date range during which the selected
show can be presented. These dates are validated on a
periodic basis and are subject to change even after the
Content Elements have been loaded into the SMS.
Note: Valid Use Dates apply only to the screen
associated with the current System. Other systems in
the same facility may have different Valid Use Dates
for the same Content Element(s).

Media Block
Chapter 1 User Guide - R110
Media Block
The SMS Media Block is the combined Media Block unit
and any attached storage (RAID) devices. This is generally
referred to as the Media Block. Each Show Playlist is an
assemblage, in presentation sequence, of one or more
Composition Playlist which must be present in the Media
Block/Storage.
The Media Block is the point where playout of the CPL is
managed, the CPL associated files are stored, when
necessary the files are decrypted and, the Content
Elements are decoded and sent to the Projector. Through
the use of “Keys” contained in the Key Delivery Message
(KDM), the Media Block decrypts CPLs as necessary for
presentation as part of a Show Playlist (SPL).
Access Media Block
Controls for Media Block
functions and information
about CPL resident in the
Media Block are available
through the MEDIA
BLOCK CONTROL
pane. To access the Media
Block Control pane, tap
Menu and then tap Media
Block. The MEDIA
BLOCK CONTROL pane
appears.
From the MEDIA
BLOCK CONTROL pane
you can execute a
RESTART of the Media
Block, MUTE the audio
output from the CPL, and
determine how much of
the RAID storage space allocated to DCPs has been used.
Restart Media Block
The Media Block is the central storage unit for all digital
components that make up the screen presentation.
• RESTART
To restart the Media Block, tap Menu and then tap
Media Block. The MEDIA BLOCK CONTROL pane
appears. Tap RESTART. You will be prompted to
confirm the action.
Caution: The RESTART operation will take
approximately 10 minutes during which time the
system is not available for presentation of content.
RESTART of the Media Block provides a controlled
start up process during which time the system verifies
the content of the SMS RAID.
Muting (Audio)
Content Elements include the audio component of the
presentation. However, the audio component exists as one
or more separate data files within the DCP. During
presentation the processing of the Audio Component
occurs in the Media Block. As a result, Muting of the
Audio Component is under control of the Media Block
(“muting” or dousing of the picture occurs in the
Projector).
• Muting (ON/OFF)
To silence the audio output from the Media Block, tap
Menu, tap Media Block, and then tap the Muting
OFF button. This is an alternate action button that
indicates what action will be taken when activated.
•OFF — Audio Output will Mute when tapped.
•ON — Audio Output will un-Mute when tapped.
DCP Storage Capacity
The amount of storage space available on the RAID for
DCPs is set using the SMS Controller application. The
DCP Used Space indicator provides you with a graphic
indication of how much of the allocated space has been
used as a percentage of the space allocated. A numeric
value is also shown.
Available Shows
Show Playlists must be composed in a separate
application, e.g., The SMS Controller. Once created, they
are saved in the SMS Server and can be scheduled as
Shows.

Function Setup
Chapter 1 User Guide - R110
Function Setup
Just as in film projection, there are a number of issues
related to the configuration of the Digital Cinema projector
for the content being presented. One easily called to mind
in film is the aperture plate which is selected based on the
image format. Because the Digital Cinema system can
present content of varying formats the settings are much
more complex. The majority of these are set using the SRX
Controller1application and stored in the FUNCTIONs (F1
through F7). However, some settings may require
adjustment of a more immediate nature. These are
available to you on the FUNCTION SET-UP screen.
Function Setup Controls
are available on the
FUNCTION SETUP
pane. To access the
Function Setup pane, tap
Menu and then tap
Function Setup. The
FUNCTION SET-UP
pane appears.
Below the Current
Function indicator select
the target FUNCTION
using Change
FUNCTION. After
selecting the FUNCTION
(F1, F2, etc.), you can set
the LAMP POWER and
adjust various image
related settings (ADJUST PROJECTOR). The settings are
stored in the selected FUNCTION as they are made for
later recall by selecting the specific FUNCTION.You can
also select from a number of Test Patterns for projection on
the auditorium screen to assist in alignment.
Caution: Any changes made to adjustments on the
FUNCTION SET-UP pane appear as they are made and
will be reflected in the settings returned the next time the
indicated FUNCTION is selected on the Projector Control
panel or recalled as part of a SPL where the included CPL
are associated with a FUNCTION.
Select “Target” Function Key
Prior to making any adjustments to settings appearing on
the FUNCTION SET-UP pane select the desired Function
Number (if necessary).
To select the Function, tap Menu, tap Function Setup,
and then tap Change FUNCTION. The CHANGE
FUNCTION popup appears.
To select the FUNCTION
to be applied to the
projector, tap the target
FUNCTION (F1, F2,
etc.).
The Projector settings
will change, e.g., Focus,
Zoom, Lamp Power, etc.,
to reflect the stored
settings for the selected
FUNCTION. The Current Function indicates the new
selection.
Note: It may take some seconds for the process to
complete as some adjustments are mechanical in nature,
e.g., Zoom, Focus, etc.
MAKE SURE THAT THE CORRECT FUNCTION, e.g.,
F1, APPEARS IN “CURRENT FUNCTION” BEFORE
MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENT ON THIS SCREEN.
THERE IS NO “UNDO” AND THE CHANGES YOU
MAKE WILL EFFECT THE PRESENTATION
EVERYTIME THE INDICATED FUNCTION IS
RECALLED USING EITHER THE PROJECTOR
CONTROL SCREEN OR WHEN THE FUNCTION IS
ASSOCIATED WITH A CPL AS PART OF A SHOW
OR SPL.
1.The SRX Controller exercises direct control over
the projector and therefore should not be used at the

it is practical to use projection lenses that optically zoom
to properly size the image to the auditorium screen. The
lens Zoom setting is associated with the Current Function
and recalled when that FUNCTION is selected on the
PROJECTOR CONTROL screen or associated with a
CPL. This is a mechanical adjustment of the projector lens
and should not be confused with any kind of image
manipulation creating a zoom effect.
To adjust Zoom (the image size), tap Menu, tap Function
Setup, and then either tap, or press and hold, the
(minus) or (plus) button associated with Zoom while
observing the projected image on the screen. It may be
necessary to observe the actual content (CPL) while setting
Zoom to insure that the screen is properly filled will still
not spilling the image onto the screen mask or surround.
Focus Adjust (Image Sharpness)
The Focus setting is associated with the Current Function
and recalled when that FUNCTION key is selected on the
PROJECTOR CONTROL screen or associated with the
CPL. This is a mechanical adjustment of the projector lens
and should not be confused with any kind of electrical
focus adjustments.
To adjust Focus (image sharpness), tap Menu, tap
Function Setup, and then either tap, or press and hold, the
(minus) or (plus) button associated with Focus
while observing the projected image on the screen.
Adjusting Focus is normally realized using a DCP
containing a suitable test image. Observing actual Show
content while adjusting Focus is not recommended.
Shift Adjust (Vertical Image Position)
Allows you to make an adjustment to the vertical position
of the on-screen image to compensate for vertical
displacement of the projector.
To adjust Shift, tap Menu, tap Function Setup, and then
either tap, or press and hold, the (minus) or (plus)
button associated with Shift while observing the projected
image on the screen. It may be necessary to view actual
content (CPL) while setting Zoom to insure that the screen
is properly filled will still not spilling the image onto the
screen mask while leaving an opposite area dark.
Electric V shift Adjust (Image V Centering)
Allows you to electrically compensation for vertical image
displacement when the aspect ratio of the image is changed
from 2.39:1 to 1.86:1. Refer to the Projector
documentation for additional details.
The Electric V shift control shows the relative vertical
“position” of the image on the auditorium screen and is
associated with the Current Function. In addition, this
control has a numeric display which allows you to
reposition the image to a known location.
To adjust the Electric V shift (image V Centering), tap
Menu, tap Function Setup, and then touch & drag the

14 Maintenance
Chapter 1 User Guide - R110
Maintenance
The Maintenance pane allows you to set the way in which
Lamps are used and to Reset Lamp Timer(s) following a
lamp replacement.
CAUTION: When replacing/handling the lamp(s)
observe manufacturer’s recommendations and procedures.
Xenon arc lamps could burst when not in operation
causing serious injuries! It is critical to follow safety
instructions when handling Xenon arc lamps.
Settings available on the
Maintenance screen apply
globally to the projector
and, unlike Functions,
cannot be changed based
on the Show.
Changing settings found
on the Maintenance
screen should be done
with care as these can
effect Lamp usage and
reset the Lamp Hours
information. Lamp Hours
should be carefully
tracked to insure that the
maximum number of
hours are not exceeded.
Exceeding the maximum
number of hours can result in failure of the Lamp
envelope.
To access Maintenance, tap Menu and then tap
Maintenance. The Maintenance screen appears.
Settings available on the Maintenance screen are;
•Lamp Select

In the Lamp Select group you can select the way in which
the two projection lamps are utilized during system
operation.
Single Lamp Mode
In Single Lamp mode you manually select a single lamp to
be used as the source of illumination. Either of the two
lamps can be selected as long as the selected lamp does not
exceed the lamp operating life.
To select one of the two lamps as the single source of
illumination, tap Menu, tap Maintenance, and then tap

illumination. The outputs the two lamps is combined into
a single source of illumination through a prism. The Lamp
A/B mode is provided to accommodate situations where
the screen image may be too dim due to screen size, e.g.,
wide-screen image, or when the content requires
additional illumination.
To select operation where both lamps are combined into a
single source of illumination (Lamp A/B mode), tap
Menu, tap Maintenance, and then tap A/B to select Lamp
A/B mode.
Note: When operation uses Lamp A/B mode care should
be taken to keep lamp usage hours approximately the
same.
Auto Lamp Mode
In Auto Lamp mode a single lamp is used as the source of
illumination. However, the lamp selection is made by the
projector when the projector is switched from STANDBY
to ON. Either of the two lamps will be selected for
illumination with the determination made by the projector
based on which lamp has the most operating hours
remaining.
To select Auto Lamp mode operation where the projector
determines which lamp acts as the illuminating source
(Auto), tap Menu, tap Maintenance, and then tap Auto.
Lamp selection is done by the projector using the
remaining hours for each lamp. The selection is done at the
time the system operating mode is changed from
STANDBY to ON.
Lamp Hours/Reset
Each lamp has an associated timer (and Reset) to allow
tracking of hours of usage following lamp replacement.
Lamp usage must be monitored to insure the quality of the
projected image as the spectral content of the lamp will
change over its useful life with a more rapid change after
the recommended usable hours have been exceeded.
Caution: The risk of lamp explosion increases when the
lamp is used beyond its maximum number of hours. For
this reason, it is important to observe the manufacturer's
recommended operating life limits.
For information related to the recommended maximum
number of useable hours for the lamp refer to the lamp
specification document.
To Reset the individual Lamp Hours Timers, tap Menu,
tap Maintenance, and then tap Reset Timer in either the
Lamp A or Lamp B group. The Hours shown for Lamp A
or Lamp B are hours of operation since the most recent
