dependingonwhichmodelwasordered.

system near the bottom of the rack to prevent the rack from being top-heavy.

EnsurethatanappropriaterackisassembledandplacedneartheAC
poweroutlets,network,anddataconnections.
TheBlackPearl4Usystemis7inches(17.8cm)tallandoccupies4Uofrack
space.TheBlackPearl2Usystemis3.5inches(8.9cm)tallandoccupies2U
ofrackspace.Botharedesignedtofitinastandard19‐inch,4‐postrack.
Keepthefollowinginmindwhenselectingarack:
Makesurethatthedistancebetweenthemountingsurfacesonthefront
andrearpostsisbetween27inches(68.6cm)and36inches(91cm).
Note: Ifyouareusingtheadaptorstoinstalltherack‐mountkitina
rackwithcircularmountingcutouts,thedistancebetweenthe
frontandrearpostsmustbeatleast28.5inches(72.4cm),and
notmorethan37.5inches(95.25cm).
Allowapproximately3inches(8cm)ofadditionaldepthatthebackof
therackforcableclearance.
Iftherackhasadoor,allowatleast2inches(5cm)clearancebetween
thefrontdoorframeandthefrontmountingpostsoftheracktoallow
thedoortocloseovertheBlackPearlfrontbezel.
Checkyourrack’sspecificationstomakesureitwillaccommodatethe
weightanddepthoftheBlackPearlchassis.
Notes: Theuseofatwo‐postrackisnotsupported.
Anenclosed19‐inch,four‐postrackisavailableforpurchase
fromSpectraLogic.Therackhastwodoorsandremovable
sidepanels.ContactSpectraLogicSalesformoreinformation
(seeContactingSpectraLogiconpage3).
Inearthquakeproneareas,providerestraintsasnecessary.
Caution
The rack must be located on a level, hard-surfaced floor, such as cement or tile. Do
not place the rack on a carpeted floor or anywhere else that poses risk for static
discharge that could damage your system or its drives.

PREPARE THE RACK
Ifyouareusinganenclosedrackwithafrontdoor,identifythefrontofthe
rackandmakesurethatthereisatleast2inches(5cm)ofclearance
betweenthefrontdoorframeandthefrontmountingposts,asshownin
Figure1.Thisclearanceisneededtoallowthefrontdoortocloseoverthe
frontbezel.Ifnecessary,movethefrontmountingpoststowardthebackof
theracktoprovidethenecessaryclearance.
IdentifythelocationintherackwhereyouwanttheBlackPearlsystem
installed.Ifnootherdevicesareinstalledintherack,SpectraLogic
recommendsmountingthesystemnearthebottomoftherack.

SEPARATE THE RAILS
Ifnecessary,removetheinnerrackrailsectionfromtheouterrackrail.
1. Orienttherackrailwiththeopenendtotheleftandtheinnerrail
facingyou(seeFigure2).
2. Pushtheendoftheinnerrailnearthehardstoptowardstheopenend
oftheouterrailuntiltheself‐lockinglatchengages.Thelatchmustbe
releasedtocontinuetoremovetheinnerrailsection.
3. Fliptherailassemblyoversotheouterrailisontopandtheself‐
lockinglatchisfacingyou(seeFigure4).
4. Presstheself‐lockinglatchtowardtheclosestedgeoftheinnerrailand
thenfullyextracttheinnerrailfromtheouterrail.

Ifyouareinstallingtherackkitinacircularcutoutrack,skiptoInstallthe
OuterRailUsingAdaptorsonpage11.
1. Determinethepositionoftherackmountkitintherack.Figure6and
Figure7showtherelationshipoftherackkitpositionintherackand
theresultingpositionofthechassis.
2. Positiontheouterrackrailatthedesiredheightintherackwiththe
openendfacingthefrontoftherack.Makesurethemountinghooks
arebehindthecut‐outsinthepostsandfacedown.
3. Insertthemountinghooksontheopenendoftherailintothecut‐outs
inthefrontoftherack.Thisactionalsodepressestheblacktabsusedto
locktherailintherack.

6. Usealeveltomakesurethattheouterrackrailislevel.
7. Usinga#2Phillipsscrewdriver,securetheouterrailtotherack.
a. Installtwoouterrailscrewsandwashersintheholesaboveand
belowthebottommountinghookinthefrontmountingbracketto
securetherailtothefrontpost(seeFigure9).
b. Installtwoouterrailscrewsandwashersintheupperandlower
holestosecurethebackoftheouterrailtotherearpost.
8. RepeatStep2onpage9throughStep7toattachthesecondouterrailto
theothersideoftherack.
9. Usealeveltomakesuretheinstalledrailsarelevelinrelationtoeach
other.

INSTALL THE OUTER RAIL USING ADAPTORS
Ifyouareinstallingtherackkitinacircularcutoutrack,youwillneedto
installthefourincludedadaptorsontheendsofbothouterrails.
1. Positiontheouterrailsothattheinnersideisfacingupward.
2. Theadaptorsusedonthefrontoftheouterrailaredifferentfromthe
onesusedonthebackoftherail.Useadaptorslabeled“A ” forthefront
oftheouterrails,andadaptorslabeled“B”forthebackoftherails.
3. Withtheinsideoftheouterrailfacingupwards,positiontheadaptor
withthelabelsidefacingupward,andthesquaregapsinthesideofthe
adaptorfacingtowardtheendoftheouterrail.

therailtolockitinplace.

outerrackrailisfacingtowardtheinsideoftherack.
8. Usinga#2Phillipsscrewdriver,securetheouterrailtotherack.
a. Installtwoouterrailscrewsandwashersinthemiddleandlowest
screwholesinthefrontmountingbrackettosecuretherailtothe
frontpost.
b. Installtwoouterrailscrewsandwashersintheupperandlower
holestosecurethebackoftheouterrailtotherearpost.
9. RepeatStep7throughStep8toattachthesecondouterrailtotheother
sideoftherack.
10. Usealeveltomakesuretheinstalledrailsarelevelinrelationtoeach
other.

1. Placethesystemchassisonasturdy,flatsurface.
2. Orienttheinnerrailwiththeselflockinglatchfacingyouandtheblack
plastictabontheendoftherailorientedtowardthefrontofthechassis.
3. Positiontheinnerrackrailoverthehooksextendingoutfromtheside
ofthechassis.Therailiskeyedtoonlyfitoneway.

SLIDE THE CHASSIS INTO THE RACK
1. Pullthecentersectionsoftheouterrailsoutoftherackuntiltheyare
fullyextended(seeFigure21).
2. Ifnecessary,removethefrontbezeloftheBlackPearlsystem.
3. Positionthechassisinfrontoftherackrailsandliftitsothattheinner
railsareatthesameheightastheextendedsectionsoftheouterrails
attachedtotherack.
WARNING
The Spectra BlackPearl 4U system weighs between 66.6 lb (30.2 kg) and 97.8 lb
(44.4 kg)
depending on how many drives are installed
. Spectra Logic requires using
two people, or using a lift to support the weight of the system while installing it into,
or removing it from a rack.
The Spectra BlackPearl 2U system weighs between 46.7 lb (21.2 kg) and 57.5 lb
(26.1 kg). Spectra Logic requires using two people, or using a lift to support the
weight of the system while installing it into, or removing it from a rack.

5. Whilesupportingthefrontofthechassiswithonehandoralift,press
theself‐lockinglatchesonbothinnerrailsdownward.Pushthechassis
therestofthewayintotherackuntilthemountingbracketsonthe
frontofthechassisareflushwiththefrontpostsoftherack.
6. Usinga#2Phillipsscrewdriver,installonechassisscrewintothehole
inthemountingbracketoneachsideofthechassistosecurethechassis
totherack.Donotover‐tightenthescrew.
7. AttachthefrontbezelifyouremoveditinStep2onpage16.
