It is recommended that all tapes are removed from drives by customer before
procedure to avoid potential stuck tapes after power-up
Verify customer has a current backup of the following (if applicable):
oLibrary configuration
oMLM and DLM databases
oEncryption keys
Refer to the “Spectra T50e Robotics Replacement Instructions”service guide
for a list of information that should be documented/backed-up by customer
prior to service
If you attempt to remove magazines without depressing magazine release
buttons, internal magazine latches may break. This type of failure cannot be
repaired in the field and the library must be returned to Spectra Logic

Considerations

Ensure you select the correct option (Robotics) upon reboot of library.
Selecting the wrong option (Controller) at the prompt results in library option
keys being erased and will require manual re-entry of all keys
Fully loaded magazines can weigh several pounds and tapes can fall out of the
magazine when the magazine is out of the library. Handle carefully to avoid
damaging media or magazines
Replace removed magazines back into their original locations to prevent
possible inventory corruption

1. Power off library and disconnect power cables
2. Remove left/right magazines
If you attempt to remove magazines without depressing the magazine release
buttons, the internal magazine latches may break. This cannot be repaired in
the field, the library must be returned to Spectra Logic
3. Loosen screws securing front panel, then tilt front panel towards you
Note routing of front panel ribbon cable under two retention tabs
4. Disengage ZIF connector and remove front panel ribbon cable
Cable should require little/no force to remove. If not, ZIF connector is not
disengaged on both sides
ZIF connector is easily damaged and not field replaceable. If damaged, a new
front panel must be ordered
5. Carefully pull robotics to front of library to access robotics ribbon cable
Do not remove robotics from library at this time
6. Disconnect robotics ribbon cable
Remove plastic clip securing cable to circuit board
oNote orientation of clip. It must be replaced in the same orientation
Grasp ribbon cable and pull upward to remove from connector
7. Hold both ribbon cables down to keep them out of the way, then pull robotics out
of library
8. Move gear rail in chassis slightly to the left to facilitate installation of replacement
robotics

9. Hold ribbon cables down and under base of replacement robotics
10. Align center slot in base of robotics with center guide rail in chassis, position
robotics approx. 2 - 3 inches into the library after engagement with center guide
rail then STOP
11. Verify center guide rail is correctly engaged with center slot in base of robotics
Gently attempt to lift robotics upward. It should not be free in this direction
Powering library on with center guide rail not engaged with robotics will result in
move failures and/or robotics damage
12. Route gear rail in chassis into gear rail channel in base of robotics (left side)
It may be necessary to flex the gear rail to properly install
13. Verify gear rail engages gears in robotics assembly
Gently rotate robotics counter-clockwise
Rotate only - do not push on robotics
Robotics should move into the library
oIf not, gear rail is not correctly routed in base of robotics
14. Verify both ribbon cables are protruding out front of library and underneath
robotics assembly
15. Reconnect robotics ribbon cable
Reseat cable into connector
Reinstall plastic cable clip in same orientation as it was removed
16. Hold front of gear rail down firmly to prevent it from buckling
Then push robotics into the library until it stops at back of library
17. Reconnect front panel ribbon cable
Ensure both sides of ZIF connector are seated
ZIF connector is easily damaged and not field replaceable. If damaged, a new
front panel must be ordered
18. Route front panel ribbon cable under two retention tabs
19. Verify ribbon cable has not been pulled out of ZIF connector

20. Reinstall front panel by tilting it up and at same time latching hook on end of gear
rail into small notch at bottom left side of front panel to secure end of gear rail to
the front panel
Ensure you do not pinch ribbon cables as front panel is rotated into place
21. Reinstall front panel screws
22. Before replacing magazines, verify front of gear rail is correctly engaged with front
panel
Powering library on with gear rail incorrectly engaged to front panel will result
in move failures and/or robotics damage
Reach into library and attempt to move front of gear rail (where engaged to the
front panel) left to right
oIt should not move more than approx. 1/8” in either direction
oIf gear rail moves more than above amount, remove screws holding front
panel in place (not necessary to disconnect ribbon cables), reposition gear
rail, replace front panel and verify engagement
23. Reinsert magazines into their original locations
Magazine releases do not need to be depressed to reinsert magazines
24. Reconnect library power cords, power on library
25. After library boot up is complete the user interface will prompt you to select
whether the controller (LCM) or robotics have been replaced - select Robotics
26. Test robotics by initiating the following tape moves from the host software (if no
access to host software, perform the moves through BlueScale front panel):
Slot-to-slot
Slot-to-drive
Drive-to slot
27. Check access port functionality by performing an import/export operation
General > Import/Export > Open Door
If access port does not open/close easily:
oRemove front panel, verify ribbon cables are not causing an obstruction
oReinstall front panel, ensuring gear rail is correctly engaged to front panel
(ref. step 13). Retest robotics and access port
oIf robotics and/or access port are still not functioning properly, contact

28. Create an Auto-support Log File (ASL) and forward to Spectra Technical Support
Obtain permission from customer prior to performing this step
ASL’s do not contain sensitive customer information such as passwords,
encryption keys etc.

29. Host backup processes can resume normal operation
30. Package faulty robotics and return it to Spectra Logic
