SR225 TREADMILL ASSEMBLY
By SPIRIT Dealer
1. Remove treadmill from carton. Do not discard all packing material.

2. Locate parts bag under motor hood. It will contain several allen wrenches, console end caps,
and other assorted hardware. When practical, SPIRITmounts assembly hardware in appropriate
locations that require removal and replacement.
Note: You will need a 1/2" open end wrench and phillips screw driver to complete assembly.
3. Lift console slightly and remove the cardboard shipping supports. Place the two supports
under the frame directly under the front roller/motor area.
4. Remove the carriage bolt hardware (located in parts bag) that will secure the console. Tilt
console in upright position and install hardware on bracket to frame (flanged nuts on bottom).
Tighten only after all four are started. Also tighten the two side bolts that the console hinged on.
An allen wrench is provided.
5. Remove the two (2) allen screws and nylon shoulder spacers located in the base and the two
(2) on each side of the upper console.
6. Install either RH or LH handle (flair will bend outward) through the access hole in console
display head. Place one black allen screw into the front mounting hole on the handle(s) and start
.into the treaded console hole. Install the second (rear) bolt and nylon spacer for alignment
purposes. Do not tighten. Tighten the front bolt(s). Remove the second (rear) bolt and place the
nylon shoulder sapcer (removed earlier) into the rear handle hole. Locate aluminum L bracket*
over the nylon shoulder spacer and start black allen screw. Position base of L (aluminum bracket)
against bottom on handle and tighten allen bolt.
*Note: Some design L brackets are obvious RH &LH and will mount only one way.

7. The console end caps (RH .& LH) will attach in place via adhesive "patch" (or velcro).
Attached to aluminum L bracket. Remove protective cover from each adhesive "patch" (if
applicable)
8. On cushion-flex equipped models (not on all SPIRIT units) attach each "black oval"
assembly as follows: See drawing.
(A) Remove flat 5/16" nut from each stud on rubber mount. Turn treadmill on its
side(s). Place nut with piliot boss down through frame slot at rear of frame.
(B) Screw stud into nut about two or three rounds (turns) only.
(C) Using 1/2" wrench tighten (jam) flange/nut assembly against "black oval".
Note: "Black oval" assembly runs with opening parallel to frame length. "Black oval"
should not move (rotate) freely.
9. Position treadmill in operating position. Start the unit and set (observe) belt tracking. Unit
must be reasonably level for proper tracking.
Note: Some slight adjustment of torque boost on PWM DC board may be
required to minimize "electronic" caused surging. See dealer manual.
.10. Remove two front motor hood mounting screws from grill. Install motor hood and secure
with previously removed hardware.
11 . Remove protective cover over "SPIRIT' decals (console & base).
Attention
Damage to the treadmill due to improper assembly is not covered under warranty.

GENERAL SAFETY FOR OPERATION
1. Know how to operate your SPIRIT Treadmill before standing on the running belt. Never learn to
use while standing on the running belt - either straddle the running belt with your feet on the
frame black anti-slip strips or stand beside the treadmill.
2. Use handrails provided; they are for your safety.
3. Do not block the rear of the treadmill. Provide a minimum of 3-1/2 feet clearance between the rear
of the treadmill and any fixed object.
4. Wear proper shoes. High heels, dress shoes, sandals or bare feet are not suitable to be used on
your treadmill. Quality athletic shoes are recommended to avoid leg fatigue.
5. Never mount or dismount the treadmill while the belt is moving. SPIRIT treadmills start with zero
speed and it is unnecessary to straddle the belt during "start-up." Simply standing on the belt
during slow acceleration is proper after you have learned to operate the unit.
6. Keep children away from the treadmill. There are obvious pinch points and other caution areas
that can cause harm.
7. Understand Safety Cord (tether) operation and use. It's for your safetyl
8. Always hold on to a handrail to control changes (incline, speed, etc.).
9. Keep hands away from all moving parts.
1O.lf treadmill begins to operate abnormally, discontinue use immediately and refer to general
troubleshooting guide and/or contact your SPIRIT dealer before continuing use.
11. Disconnect your SPIRIT treadmill from the electrical outlet prior to cleaning or service work.
12.Install treadmill on a flat level surface with access to a 120-volt, 20-amp grounded outlet. DO
NOT USE AN EXTENSION CORD: DO NOT
ATIEMPT TO DISABLE THE GROUNDED PLUG
BY USING ADAPTERS, OR IN ANY WAY MODIFY THE CORD SET. A serious shock or fire
hazard may result along with computer malfunctioning.
13. Think safel

GENERAL OPERATIONS
1. Do not install treadmill on deeply padded, plush or shag carpet. Damage to both
carpet and treadmill may result.
2. Before using your SPIRIT treadmill, observe a brief break-in period by walk-
ing on the treadmill at 2-3 mph for 5-7 minutes. This will insure proper distribution
of the wax lubricant and eliminate any hesitation or surging caused by the tacky fin-
ish of a new deck. Never
runljog on a new treadmill until after the break-in
period.
3. Do not use SPIRIT treadmills equipped with CUSHION-FLEX low impact system on
a rubber mat or similar type high friction surface. Incline damage will result if rear
portion of treadmill does not "slide" as unit is raised or lowered.
4. Should any service problem arise you must contact and expect service from your
SPIRIT dealer. SPIRIT is not staffed nor set-up to handle user service require-
ments. Your dealer has been provided special diagnostic tools and information
required to trouble shoot any potential problem. SPIRIT has and will work with its
dealer network to rectify any manufacturing defect.
Any service/use question
must be handled by the authorized SPIRIT dealer. No exceptions.
5. SPIRIT treadmills do not function with a
ground fault circuit i nterruption (GFCI)
wall outlet. Although amp draw (wattage) is low during operation, on initial start-up
it is higher than normal for a fraction of a second.
6. Expect AM radio static when operating your SPIRIT treadmill. SPIRIT offers an
optional dealer installed filter system to minimize AM radio static conditions. TV's,
FM radio's, telephones, etc. are not effected. This is rarely a concern.
7. Expect short treadbelt life if unit is not kept reasonably clean. Dirt causes
friction
(rapid wear) between the deck and treadbelt. A condition SPIRIT has no control
ove
r.
8. Do not use excessive pressure on console control overlays. They are precision
set to function properly with little (finger) pressure. Pushing harder is not going to
make unit go faster or slower. If you feel keys are not functioning properly with
"normal" pressure contact your SPIRIT dealer. Adjustments can be made. All keys
(within reason) should operate/control treadmill functions without excessive
finger effort. Damage to overlay will result if excessive control pressure con-
tinues.

SAFETY CORD
A safety Lanyard (Tether) cord is provided with this unit. It is a simple magnetic
design that should be used at all times. It is for your safety should you fall or move too
far back on the treadbelt. Pulling this cord/magnet assembly will stop treadbelt move-
ment should the situation dictate.
To Use:
1. Place magnet into position on the console control head. Your treadmill will not
start and operate without this. Removing the magnet also secures the treadmill, within
reason, from unauthorized use. Although, many magnet designs can over-ride it.
2. Fasten the black plastic clip onto your clothing securely to assure good hold-
ing "power." Note: The magnet has strong enough power to minimize accidental, unex-
pected, stopping and the clip should be attached securely to make certain it does not
come off instead of the magnet (being pulled). Be familiar with its function and limita-
tions. Use adjustment system to assure proper length of co
rd.
Attention: Expect the treadmill to stop (depending on speed) with a two to three step
"coast" anytime the magnet is pulled off the console. Use the Red STOP switch in nor-
mal operation. The safety lanyard is designed primarily to be used in possible panic sit-
uations.

SR225 PROGRAMMABLE/HEART RATE CONTROL OPERATION
CAUTION -
Do not stand on treadbelt while learning to operate your
treadmill!
• Plug AC power cord directly into a grounded outlet. Turn on red power
switch. The switch will glow red. It is not necessary to turn this switch
off after each use.
• The unit is now ready for Manual, Heart Rate Control or Programmable
operation. Tether Cord must be in position.
MANUAL OPERATION
• Push the START key. TIME/CALORIE display will light to read 150. Usin g
the UP ADOWN T adjust keys, enter your weight. This is f or calorie
computation and this weight value will be held in memory unless changed. If
counting calories is not important to you, you may skip this step by simply
pressing the ENTER key. You may also skip the next step .
•
The unit can now be programmed to count down to shut-off aut omaticall y.
Display will show all zero's in TIME/CALORIE. Using the UP ADOWN T
adjust keys enter the desired time in whole minutes. Also, use this
information to set session time in Programmable mode.
NOTE: The above weight and time adjustments are not necessary to operate
the treadmill.
• Press and maintain FAST" key to display desired speed.
• If an increase incline is desired before belt movement, use the UPA DOWN T
adjust keys to desired incline. You may adjust incline anytime in the workout.
• Push START key to begin belt movement to displayed speed. Belt will slowly
accelerate to that speed.
• To slow treadbelt, push and maintain slow T key to desired speed .
• To
stop motion of the treadbelt, depress and maintain pressure on the
SLOW Tkey, or depress the red STOP/PAUSE switch. The STOP switch als o
clears the accumulated time, calorie, and distance and blanks out the display
if pushed again.

• When operating the treadbelt , the Pause feature may be utilized by pressing
the PAUSE switch. This will slowly decelerate the treadbelt to zero. To resume
previously set speed press START key. Unit will slowly return to the set speed
(as displayed). Time and distance will "hold" while unit is in the Pause mode .
This feature can be used in Manua l, Programmable , Track or Heart Rate
Control mode .
Pressing the START key after any automatic shut-off by the timer, the
treadmill will repeat itself. Or, you can select another program. This will keep
your total calorie count and distance cumulative.
Pace Function - Press SELECT key after treadbelt movement for pace
function . Pace will be displayed in time/calorie/pace window. Press SELECT
key again to exit pace mode. Pace function will scan and adjust up or down as
speed is changed. This mode can be used in manual or programmable
operation.
Dot Matrix Display - This display illustrates in programmable (preset and
user) modes the workout effort. Ten rows of "dots" (7 high) indicate each
segment of a workout. When all the "dots" of a row are lit, this indicates 100%
of the program level. For example: if a program maximum speed is 3.5 mph,
all dots lit mean 3.5 mph. The dots are only to show an approximate level
(speed/incline) of effort. They do no t necessarily indicate aspecific value -
only an approximate percent to compare levels of intensity.
While
in HRC your actual Heart Rate will be displayed and a flashing heart will
"beat" to
your pulse/rhythm . It only displays if receiving a Polar signal.
A 1/4 mile track (440 yards) will be displayed in track mode (between preset &
user programs).
PROGRAM~LEOPE RAT ION
TO SELECT A PROGRAM:
• Press START key to light display.
•
See "Manual Operation" instructions on entering weight and time .
•
The session time will be 20 minu tes unless changed. If more or less time is
desired, use UP ~ DOWN T keys to adjust to desired session time, similar to
"Manual Operation" count down function. This mu st be done before the
next step.
• Press SELECT key. Display will read HC (Heart Rate Control). If you desire
Heart Rate Control turn to the Heart Rate Control Section of this manual at
this time. If you wish to use the programmable capabilities of your SPIRIT 225
simply press SELECT again and the display will read PI (Program 1). Press
again to display P2. Keep momentarily pressing until desired program is
located (up to U4).
•
Press START key to begin workout after a program is selected .

PRESET PROGRAM (PI, P2, P3, & P4)
• These are factory pre-set programs customized by SPIRIT. The values can
not be changed except when operating in a particular segment. Also, the
SHIFT keys do not function in this mode except to review the segments before
starting a workout. Once in a particular segment, the user may adjust speed
or incline. (These will not be held in memory). Operators can not re-program
a Preset Program.
•After selecting one of the preset programs, push the START key. This will
start the first program segment. The incline and speed will be shown along
with the segment number the user is in.
•
The segment time will always be 1/10th of the session time. Within 5
seconds of the end of a segment run (before starting the next), a chime will
alert the user that a change is being made. INCLINE and SPEED displays will
also flash to alert a change. This statement applies to both preset and user
programs.
Track Function -After the 4 preset programs are reviewed a 1/4 mile track is
displayed on the dot matrix computer. The flashing dot is the users location
and will "travel " around the track. The segment time/target window will
display the total number of laps. This track functions at all times if in a
program mode (P2 for example). It however can only be reviewed if in the
pause mode and was selected. The distance (laps) would accumulate.
USER PROGRAM (UI, U2, U3, & U4)
• Up to four programs can be customized and stored in memory. Pressing the
SELECT key past track mode will display the particular user program number.
• To program a user mode; (not already programmed)
[1] Incline will display O. Use the UP ~ DOWN ... adjust keys to adjust to
desired level.

Speed will display at .1. Use the FAST ~ SLOW ... keys to adjust to
desired mph.
[3] Press the shift key. SEGMENT TIME will display segment number (l -
10). Repeat incline and speed adjustment procedure for each segment.
Press SHIFT key again to display segment (number). By repeating these
steps you may set the desired incline and speed levels all 10 segments. if
desired.
[4] Use the SHIFT key to review alower segment number. You may
change any incline or speed level to be held in memory before starting.
Once started, at any time, speed and/or incline may be adjusted. These
settings. while changed in a workout, are not held in memory.

NOTE: Anytime in t he Use r Mode, before sta rt i ng (INCLINE and SPEED
display will flash), the level of inclin e and/ or sp e ed may be c hanged . That
input value will be he ld in m em ory.
• To

HEART RATE CONTROL
Before us ing the He art Rate Con tro l mode y ou s ho uld f am iliarize yo urself
with the treadmill opera tion in the m anual mode while u sin g the Po lar wireless
system to monitor only. Y ou mu st we ar t he wir eless he art rate be lt with a
transmitter attac hed if you wish to use th e He art Ra te Con trol mode . Make
sure it is snugly fitted on th e low er p orti on of your ch e st with th e tr an smi tt er
on the front side of your chest, but above y ou r sto mac h. For best contact, you
should pre-wet the elec tro de with a few dr ops of w at er and p lace it against
your skin . It is wire less, an d y ou m ay w ear any clothing over th e belt.
The purpose of Heart Rate Con tr ol is to ma intain y our he art rate within a
narrow, specified r an ge. Th is is accompli sh ed by the tre admill au t om ati cally
increasing or decreas i ng th e inclin e from zero (0) to a fifte en (15) p er c ent grade.
You
are always in con tro l of the speed.
This feature can be e xtre me ly valu able to your trainin g p rogram an d may
be used during wa r m- u p , tra ining p ortion , or cool -d own ses sion of you r
exercise
program . At any time durin g y our exercise session, y ou m ay ch an ge
your Target Heart R at e (THR). If your ac tual heart rate is m or e than two beats
below the THR that you have se le cte d, t he tr eadmill inclin e will a utoma tically
and gradually increase . On th e othe r hand, if your act ual he art rate is more
than two beats above th e THR, th e tr e admill incline will gr a du ally decrease.
However, the i ncl ine will only o pe rate if y our actual he art r at e is within 20
beats of the targete d v alue y ou entered. YOU are ALWAYS in contro l of the
sp eed. Only the in clin e will be au t omati cally raised or low ered in th is mode.
HEART RATE IDISPLAY DESCRIPTION
Heart R ate Monitor Mode -Pressing the ENTER key will enter y ou into Heart
Rate Mo nitor (not con tr ol) mode at anytim e in the Manual or P rogrammable
mode after treadbe lt mov em ent.
Maximu m Incline - Wh en h eart con tro l is first activ at ed, 15 will be displayed.
This number can be adjus te d to th e user's pr ef err ed maximum inclin e. This
maximum incline n umb er c an n ot be re -adju st ed when th e u ni t is in the Heart
Rate Control mo de . Aft er you h ave se lec te d your maximu m i nc line press
ENTER.
