Thank you for purchasing the P-N-P H.A.L light and sound kit
from Starling Technologies™.
We are excited to release our light and sound kit for the infamous
computer from the mo ie "2001: A Space Odyssey."
Features red glowing eye and 30 phrases with extremely high quality life like
sound acti ated by a motion sensor.
Volume is adjustable by small blue trim-pot.
Kit is completely assembled, all you do is add batteries and turn on the switch.
Note: after 30sec of non-acti ation of the sound card, the sound will start o er
from the beginning of the phrases when next acti ated.

Startup:
After adding batteries, turn the unit on. HAL will greet you with “Good E ening
Da e”. He may also acti ate another sound at this time, as the motion sensor is
analyzing its en ironment, which is normal.
Mo ing your hand past the sensor or walking past it will set off another
phrase. If left inacti e for 30sec, the sound will start o er from the beginning of
the phrases when next acti ated.

Very simple install of the kit.
Hot-glue can be used to install e erything but the lenses.
Looking at the soundboard, next to the battery holder below, there is a blue
square trim pot. Turn the screw clock-wise to increase olume, turn counter
clock-wise to reduce olume.

This was my choice for the motion sensor installation. I discarded the dome
lens so that I could hide the sensor. I drilled all holes in the speaker area of HAL.
Placing the sensor behind one of the holes ga e me a motion range of about 4ft.
I enlarged one of the holes, shown abo e, gi ing a range of about 10ft. E en
though this hole is larger, when looking at the front of HAL, this hole still blends
in.
This installation limited the annoying acti ation of e ery mo ement in my
office, gi ing me more control of when HAL acti ates. You may also choose to
install the sensor outside the model to use it with the dome if you need more
sensiti ity.
Line up the motion sensor chip, the round protrusion with rectangular
window, centered o er the large hole you drilled. Hot glue it in place. Make sure
the sensor is mounted flat, not angled in one direction or else the sensor will be
more sensiti e to one side than the other. Mine is a bit off but I don't mind it :)
Test the sensiti ity, if it works well for you, add a little more hot-glue.

I hot glued it on 3 edges. While your at it, glue the speaker in place as well as
the switch. Looking at the first photo in this manual, hot-glue the soundboard
and the 3xAAA battery holder as shown. If the red eye LED is loose, use a little
hot-glue around the edges to hold it in place.
Here is my completed model of the HAL9000. Lea e it on its stand or do as I and
hang him on the wall. Enjoy the life like sound coming from your ery own
HAL :)

Board supported voltage: 4.5 olts supplied by 3x AAA batteries.
Troubleshooting
When the batteries begin to degrade, phrases may play incomplete, or distance
from motion detection will decrease. The LED red eye will remain bright.
This is normal and it is time to change the batteries.
