Introduction
Thank you for purchasing a StarTech.com Gigabit Ethernet switch. Thanks to dedicated
bandwidth of 1000 Mbits/sec for each port, your network will enjoy faster response
times and fewer bottlenecks. This Gigabit Ethernet switch automatically establishes the
fastest transfer speed for each device (1000, 100, or 10 Mbits/sec) and use half- and full-
duplex capabilities to optimize your network performance. Each port automatically
detects and adjusts for MDI (straight) or MDI-X (crossover) cables so there is no need for
a separate uplink port.

Before You Begin
To ensure a quick and easy Gigabit Ethernet switch installation, please read through this
section carefully before attempting to install the switch.
WARNING! The Gigabit Ethernet switch must be installed and operated in an
environment with temperatures between 50-131ºF (10-55ºC) and humidity levels of 0-
90% (non-condensing). Make sure that the switch is kept away from heating sources and
that the vents at the side of the device are not blocked. Do not place any objects on top of
the device. Make sure that no water or moisture enters the unit. If necessary, use a
dehumidifier to reduce humidity near the device.

System Requirements
This Gigabit Ethernet switch can be connected to PC computers with Ethernet
networking cards, or other compatible switches, hubs, or servers.
Note: For each Gigabit network device you want to attach to the switch, you will need
UTP network cables that comply with EIA/TIA 568 specifications and Category 5e
(minimum for Gigabit transfer rates) patch cable. StarTech.com offers a wide range of
these cables in various lengths and colors to suit your network needs. StarTech.com also
carries a wide range of Ethernet cards for both PC and notebook computers. For product

Installation
This section will guide you through the installation of your Gigabit Ethernet switch.
Please read through the instructions carefully and complete each step in the order listed.
1. Plug one end of your network cable into an open port at the rear of the switch.
2. Plug the other end of the cable into the RJ-45 port on your network device.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for any other devices you want to connect.
4. Plug one end of the the power adapter into an open outlet and plug the other end
into the DC connector at the rear of the device. The green Power LED on the front
of the switch should now be lit.
Monitoring Your Fast Ethernet Switch
The LEDs on the front of the switch are the best indication of the switch’s activity.

Troubleshooting
Power LED is not lit.
• Check that the power cord is properly connected at both ends.
Link/Activity LED is not lit when connected to a 1000 or 100 Mbits/sec device.
• Make sure the device is turned on.
• Make sure the network cable is properly connected at both ends.
• Make sure that your network cables comply with EIA/TIA 568 and Category
5e specifications.
If problems persist, power down all devices and disconnect all plugs from the switch.
Wait at least ten seconds and plug the power adapter back into the switch. Then plug the
devices back into the switch and power them back up.
