Pit Assessment
1. Ensure the pit, PitEdge, and surrounding area are free from debris.
2. Measure the length from the entrance end to the exit end on both the passenger and
driver sides of the pit.

4
Office:
705-728-4868
Fax: 705-728-2047
www.sticonveyor.com
Enter both dimensions in the “Overall Pit Dimensions” table of the install calculation
spreadsheet.
3. Starting from the entrance end, mark the concrete every 10’ until the bumpout at the
exit end on both the passenger and driver sides.

Office:

4. Measure the width at both the entrance and exit ends.
Enter both dimensions in the “Overall Pit Dimensions” table of the install calculation
spreadsheet.

5. Position the provided 1’ long 1” X 1” angle (one at each end of the pit) using the
centre line dimension given in the “Overall Pit Dimensions” table. The value will give
you the distance the flat edge should be from either side of the pit. There are two
measurements: one for each end of the pit.

6. Drill holes in the concrete using the top guide holes of the angles and secure them
with screw anchors.
7. Connect a string line between the tops of the two angles (on the flat sides). Ensure
the string line is attached at least 5” above the pit and clearly mark where it is
attached on the angles (as it will need to be realigned later).
Ensure the string line is taut.

Office:
705-728-4868
Fax: 705-728-2047

8. At each 10’ mark, measure from the vertical face of the pit steel (on both sides) to
the string line.
Note: make sure the angles don’t rotate when taking string line measurements!
Enter these measurements into the “Pit Centre Line Measurements” table of the
install calculation sheet.

Office:

Fax: 705-728-2047

9. If the install calculation sheet determines the string line needs to be adjusted, turn
the angle to achieve the correct positioning of the string line.
Tip: use a square to project the position of the string line onto the concrete face when
measuring the string line distance for best results.
10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 until the final string line variance in the “Pit Centre Line
Measurements” table is green. If the cell is still red after 2 passes through the table
(4 sets of measurements total), CALL STI (877-784-2358).
The string line should now be centered in the pit.

11. Once the string line is centred, drill another set of holes in the concrete (aligned with
the bottom guide holes of the angles) and secure them with screw anchors.
Note: make sure the angle doesn’t rotate when drilling the second set of holes;
recheck the first and last measurements to make sure the values match.
12. Set up a transit laser in the pit with the datum at the center of the entrance end wall.
Measure the relative elevation on the horizontal pit steel face at every 10’ mark
down both sides of the pit.
Enter the dimensions into the “Elevation Measurements” table of the install
calculation spreadsheet.

Truck Unloading
1. The drive and idler frames have to be unloaded first – this must be done using a
forklift. For both frames, slot forks through open sections of the frame from the side
so that the ends of the forks brace against the frame and the heels of the forks form
a fulcrum. Tilting the forks upward, lift the frames.
Note: make sure to angle the forks upwards when lifting so that the frames do not
slide off; frames can be lifted as shown above, from either end.
2. The rest of the parts can now be unloaded. All remaining parts are on skids and can
be unloaded normally (using e.g., pallet jacks, forklifts, etc.).
3. A packing list should be contained in the crate; verify that all parts are possessed
prior to starting the install. If the packing list is not present, or if parts are missing
from the shipment, contact STI.

Frame Installation Part 1
1. Take down the string line without disturbing the angles. Using a forklift (or
comparable equipment), place the drive frame in the pit at the exit end and the idler
frame in the pit at the entrance end.
2. Use two pieces of exit grating to space the drive frame from the pit wall.
Note: ensure veneers are on when spacing frame from wall to ensure proper
fitment.

13
Office:
705-728-4868
Fax: 705-728-2047
www.sticonveyor.com
Ensure the grating touches the vertical face of the pit steel and position the drive
frame to fit both pieces of grating loosely.
Note: leave the exit grating in place when making adjustments to make sure the
frame remains at the correct spacing (re-space the frame as necessary to retain the
proper distance from the wall).
3. Set the string line back up so that it sits above both frames.

4. Mount the setup bar to the gearbox and square it to the frame.
Note: ensure the cross mounts are square to the setup bar.

Office:

Fax: 705-728-2047

5. Measure from the far corner of the drive-off plate to one corner of the setup bar.
6. Measure from the opposite side to the same corner of the setup bar. Adjust the
placement of the setup bar until both measurements are equal.

16
Office:
705-728-4868
Fax: 705-728-2047
www.sticonveyor.com
7. Adjust the placement of the frame so that the edge of the setup bar is in line with the
string line and the frame is centered and square.
8. Check the height of the frame; the height of the drive-off plates relative to the pit are
given in the job specific drawings.
Note: drive-off plates are typically 3/16” higher than the pit. Verify with drawing.

17
Office:
705-728-4868
Fax: 705-728-2047
www.sticonveyor.com
Tip: to check if a standard frame is at the correct height, place a 3/16” spacer on the
concrete and place a level between it and the drive frame; adjust the height of the
frame until it is level with the spacer.
9. Adjust the height of the drive frame legs (6 total) if needed.
Tip: use the leg holes to make coarse adjustments, and the carriage bolt threading to
make fine adjustments.

10. Ensure the frame is positioned properly by placing levels on the gearbox mounting
plate as shown.
11. Recheck that the drive frame is square, centered, level, and at the correct height.
Anchor the frame to the concrete using the toe clamps.
Note: only anchor the fixed hole using wedge anchors, NOT the slotted hole (the
slotted hole is for a chemical anchor – to be installed later).
At this point, remove the exit grating.

12. Install the support braces on the drive frame. Leave the anchor holes unbolted for
now (these bolts will be installed with the other chemical anchors).
Note: do not walk on the drive frame prior to installing the chemical anchors as it
can misalign the frame.

Beam Installation Part 1
1. Measure out each beam location and the location of the idler frame relative to the
drive frame (see job specific drawings for placement).
Note: do not take measurements relative to each other – this can lead to a build-up
of errors, and can ruin the final spacing. Take all measurements to the edge of the
frame hat as shown.
Mark each location on the horizontal face of the pit steel.
