1 Foreword
Dear Customer,
Stiegelmeyer has built this bed to give you the best possible help with the challenges
posed by nursing and caregiving. We passionately pursue the goal of developing
products that are durable and of a high-quality. Our products should make patients
and residents feel as safe and comfortable as possible during their stay in bed and
also maximise the safety and lighten the workload of nursing and care staff. For this
reason, the electrical safety and all functions are tested prior to delivery. Each bed
leaves our factory in perfect condition.
Correct operation and care are necessary to keep the bed in excellent condition
during long-term use. Please therefore read and observe these instructions carefully.
They will help you to put the bed into service for the first time and to use it on a daily
basis. This instruction manual contains all the information you will need to make it as
easy and safe as possible to control and handle this bed, both for you as the operator
and your users. It is a practical reference book and should be kept close to hand at
all times.
Even after purchasing a bed, Stiegelmeyer is still on hand to help at any time. Our

2 General Information
The Libra care bed is simply referred to as the 'bed' or 'care bed' in this
instruction manual. In addition to the standard functions of the bed, this
instruction manual also describes optional functions and special bed equipment
which might not apply for the model that you have selected.
This care bed fulfils all the requirements of the 93/42/EEC Medical Devices Directive. It is
classified as a Class 1 active medical device in accordance with § 13 of the German
Medical Devices Act (Medizinproduktegesetz (German abbreviation: MPG).
Please observe your obligations as the operator in accordance with the Medical Devices
Operator Ordinance (Medizinprodukte-Betreiberverordnung, German abbreviation:
MPBetreibV), to ensure that this medical product is always operated safely and with no
risk to residents, users or third parties.
This instruction manual contains safety information which must be followed. All users
working on and with the care bed must be familiar with the contents of this instruction
manual and follow the safety advice provided.
Instructions for the operator:
Any item of technical equipment, electrical or otherwise, can prove hazardous if not used
properly.
You are obligated to instruct users in the proper use of this care bed in accordance with
§ 5 of the German Medical Devices Operator Ordinance (MPBetreibV § 5).
Ensure that users know where this instruction manual is kept, in accordance with § 9 of
the German Medical Devices Operator Ordinance (MPBetreibV § 9).
Before putting the bed into service for the first time:
Remove all transport securing devices and packaging film.
Clean and disinfect the bed before using it for the first time.

2.1 EFINITION OF THE GROUPS OF PERSONS INVOLVED
In this instruction manual, the following groups of persons are defined as:
Operator
The operator (e.g. nursing homes operators) are all natural and legal persons with
property rights to the Libra care bed. The operator is responsible for the safe
operation of this medical device.
Users
Users (nursing staff, carers and attendants, ...) are persons who, based on their
training, experience or briefing, are qualified to operate the bed on their own authority
or to carry out work on it, or have been instructed on how to handle this bed.
Furthermore, they are able to recognise and avoid potential hazards and assess the
clinical condition of the resident.
Residents
In this instruction manual, a resident is defined as a person who is infirm or in need of
care and occupies this bed.
It is a requirement that the operator or user instructs each new resident in the bed
functions that are important for him/her.

2.2 SAFETY INFORMATION
At the time of leaving the factory, this bed represents state-of-the-art technology.
Only use the bed if it is in perfect working order.
The most important objective of the safety information is to prevent personal injuries.
2.2.1 Explanation of the Safety Symbols Used
The following safety symbols are used in this instruction manual.
Risk of injury to persons
This symbol indicates hazards due to electrical voltages. There is
danger to life.
This symbol indicates general hazards. There is danger to life and
health.
Risk of damage to property
This symbol indicates possible damage to property. It is possible that
damage may occur to the drive, materials or the environment.
Other advice
This symbol indicates a generally useful tip. If you follow it, you will find
it easier to operate the bed. This tip is provided to give you a better
understanding.
Please note:
The safety symbols used are not a substitute for the written safety information.
It is important therefore to read the safety information and follow the
instructions exactly!

2.2.2 Safety Information for the Operator
Using this instruction manual, which must be provided with the bed, ensure that
every user is instructed in the safe operation of this bed before using it for the first
time.
Draw every user’s attention to the possible hazards that can arise if the bed is
improperly used. This applies in particular to the use of electrical drives and safety
sides.
Please observe your obligations in accordance with the Medical Devices Operator
Ordinance (Medizinprodukte-Betreiberverordnung, German abbreviation:
MPBetreibV), to ensure that this medical product is always operated safely and
with no risk of danger to residents, users or third parties!
If the bed is in long-term use, test the functions and check for any visible damage
(see Chapter 6.2) after a reasonable period of time (recommendation: once a
year).
Only persons who have been properly instructed in its use must be allowed to
operate this bed.
Make sure that substitute staff are also sufficiently well instructed in the safe
operation of this bed!
If any additional devices (such as compressors for positioning systems) are
attached, ensure that these are securely fastened and are working properly. Pay
particular attention to:
oSafe routing of all loose connector cables, tubing, etc.
oEnsuring that no multiple socket outlets are located under the bed (fire hazard
due to ingressing liquids).
oChapter 2.3.1 of this instruction manual
If you have any questions or concerns, consult the manufacturer of the additional
equipment or Stiegelmeyer.
Check that your staff are complying with the safety information!
Allergic reactions when using upholstered components
Please note: The headboards, footboards and side-panels of the Libra
bed can be supplied in the upholstered version according to customer
specifications. If the resident is especially sensitive and tends to allergic
reactions, it is not possible, however, to completely exclude such
allergic reactions in the case of extended intensive skin contact with
upholstered parts. In these rare cases, please do not use the
upholstered parts.

2.2.3 Safety Information for the User
Route the mains cable in such a way that it cannot be pulled, driven
over or damaged by moving parts when the bed is operated.
At regular intervals, carry out a visual inspection of the mains cable to
check for mechanical damage (scuffing, exposed wires, kinks,
pressure points, etc.). Such a check should be performed:
oWhenever the cable has been subjected to any mechanical load,
e.g. has been driven over by the bed itself or by an equipment
trolley, has been bent, stretched or violently pulled due to the bed
rolling away while still plugged into the wall socket.
oBefore plugging it back into the power socket after the bed has
been moved or relocated.
oRegularly by the user when the bed is in constant operation.
If any damage or malfunction is suspected,
oUnplug immediately from the mains supply,
oIndicate clearly that the bed is “Out of Order”,
oTake the care bed out of service and
oReport this immediately to the operator responsible.
Check the strain relief for the mains cable regularly to ensure that the
screws are tight.
When using external electrical components such as patient lifts,
reading lamps, or compressors for positioning systems, ensure that
their power cables will not become entangled or damaged by moving
parts of the bed. This will prevent potential hazards due to electric
shocks, fire, etc.
Do not use multiple socket outlets placed loosely on the floor to
connect external electrical components. These could cause electrical
hazards due to damaged mains cables or the ingress of liquids.
Before moving the bed, unplug the power supply unit and place the cable
in the mains cable holder provided to ensure that the power supply unit
will not fall off or trail on the floor.

Ensure that the operator instructs you in the safe operation of this bed.
Each time before using the bed, check that it is in perfect working
order to prevent unnecessary hazards for the resident and delays to
work procedures (see also Chapter 3.1).
Adjust the mattress base to its lowest position before leaving the
resident unattended. In this way, you considerably reduce the risk of
injury to the resident due to a fall when getting in or out of bed.
To safeguard the resident against unintentional motorised
adjustments, place the handset out of reach (e.g. at the foot end of
the bed) or lock the adjustment functions of the handset on the
control panel, if:
oThe resident is unable to operate the bed safely or to free
himself/herself from potentially dangerous situations.
oThe resident could be at risk due to unintentional motorised
adjustments,
oThe safety sides are raised (danger that the occupant's limbs could
be trapped when adjusting the backrest and thigh rest).
oChildren are left unsupervised in the room with the bed.
Adjustments may then be made only by, or in the presence of, a
person who has received appropriate instruction.
Ensure that no obstacles such as bedside cabinets, window sills,
sloping ceilings, floor cable ducts or chairs could impede adjustments
to the bed, to prevent damage to load-bearing parts of the bed and to
the obstacles.
When not in use, stow the handset in such a way that it cannot
inadvertently fall off (hang it up by the hook). Make sure that the cable
cannot be damaged by moving parts of the bed.

2.3 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
2.3.1 Purpose
This bed is designed for positioning and transporting patients, as an aid to
diagnosing, monitoring, treating, and alleviating illnesses or compensating for
injuries or disabilities. For detailed instructions for use, see Chapter 9.7.
This bed is suitable for accommodating adult patients only (= persons whose
height is at least 146 cm).
The bed itself is not life sustaining or life supporting.
The bed has no medical indication.
2.3.2 Use for the Intended Purpose
-The bed is intended for use in senior residences and care homes and comparable
medical institutions with qualified personnel within closed rooms. For detailed
instructions for use, see Chapter 9.5.
-Qualified personnel must be skilled in handling the beds through being thoroughly
conversant with the instruction manual.
-This bed may be operated without restrictions with a permanent
maximum load of 225 kg (resident and accessories). Symbol:

-If the owner of the hospital bed changes, the instruction manual must be handed
over with the bed.
-The bed with its castors is designed for being moved together, with the resident,
within the room.
-This bed is suitable for repeated use.
-This bed must not be used in explosive environments caused, for example, by
cleaning agents or anaesthetics.
-This bed must not be used in combination with high frequency surgical equipment.
-Before using the safety sides, assess and take into consideration the clinical
condition and particular physical build of the patient. Observe the special safety
information in Chapter 4.5!

This bed may only be used under the operating conditions described in this
instruction manual. Any other use shall be regarded as contrary to the intended
purpose!
2.3.2 Contraindications
This bed is only suitable for residents who do not fall below the
following minimum body size/weight:
oHeight: 146 cm,
oWeight: 40 kg
oBody mass index1“BMI”: 17.
Owing to the smaller limbs of patients with a body size/weight that is less than this,
there is an increased risk of entrapment between the open spaces of the safety
sides when safety side systems are used.
2.3.3 Side Effects
Unless suitable measures are taken, residents who spend prolonged periods in bed
may develop decubitus.
2.3.4 Particular Features of the Bed

2.3.5 Optional Electrical Features
-Electrical setting of Trendelenburg position: An external operating device (handset)
allows medical staff to place the resident in an emergency position whenever necessary
-LED reading light: Energy-saving, no hazardous heating as with conventional lamps,
resistant to jolts and vibrations; approx. 50,000 hour lifetime of the LED bulb
-Discreet LED night light under the bed provides orientation for the resident and prevents
falls from occurring at night
2.3.6 Optional Mechanical Features
–Combined safety sides (Mobivit): These combine the advantages of the familiar full-
length and split safety sides and provide maximum protection and flexibility in use
–Split safety sides on both sides (D): Our 2-stage telescopic safety sides can be
adjusted across a range of settings to suit individual needs. Can be quickly assembled or
removed without tools,
–Removable head and footboards: With a split safety side, both the head and footboard
have the option of being quickly removed to provide easier access to the resident.
–Thanks to its deep venting slits, the removable polypropylene hygiene mattress base
is also highly breathable. It can be easily placed on the mattress base and removed. It is
also easy to care for and can be cleaned with conventional cleaning agents.
–Removable comfort mattress base comprises 50 individual spring elements. These
elements are designed to mould themselves closely to the shape of the body and help to
ventilate the mattress. Their flexibility also ensures that the pressure is optimally
distributed. The comfort mattress base also significantly contributes to preventing
pressure ulcers.
–Easy and rapid mechanical lowering of the backrest (CPR).
–Adaptable bed extension, extends the bed by approx. 10 cm or approx. 20 cm.
If full-length or combined safety sides are used, longer safety side bars must be fitted. If
required, please consult our sales department (see Chapter 6.4)
–Pillow storage mounted at the foot end; can be drawn out from under the mattress base
–Wall deflection roller effective in horizontal and vertical directions
–Wall spacers, on the head end + sides; prevent damage to walls and on-site equipment
when the height of the bed is adjusted.

2.3.7 Materials Used
For the most part, the bed was manufactured from steel profiles whose surfaces were
finished with a polyester powder coating or a metal coating of zinc or chromium.
The head and footboards and safety sides are made of wood or wood-based material
with sealed surfaces. All surfaces are safe for contact with the skin.
2.3.8 Structural Design
Mattress base
The mattress base is divided into a backrest, a fixed seat section, a thigh rest and a
lower leg rest. The rests are adjustable. The mattress base can be raised and
lowered horizontally or set to the reverse-Trendelenburg position with the foot end
lowered (optional Trendelenburg position also available).
Chassis
The chassis is constructed from welded steel tubing with an optimised scissor lift
design and is equipped with four castors which can all be locked in pairs on the foot
and head end.
Safety sides
The bed has a full-length safety side to protect the resident from falling out of bed (2)
or optionally,
a combined safety side (Mobivit) (6),
a split telescopic safety side (D).
The safety sides can be raised, one after the other, from the lowered position to
protect the resident and then lowered again.
Electric drive System
The bed’s electrical drive system is first-error-secure, flame-resistant (UL94V-0) and
consists of:
An ‘external’ power pack. The power pack consists of:
oA voltage transformer and a low-voltage connection cable. The voltage
transformer generates a protective low voltage that is safe for both the
resident and user. The power pack provides the control unit of all drives
(motors) with protective low voltage via a connection cable and a cable
harness.
the central control unit. All drive motors and the handset are connected to the
central control unit via plug connections which work with protective low voltage.
Electric motors for the backrest and thigh rest.
Two electric motors for the height adjustment of the mattress base.

3 Putting into Service
No electrical measurements are necessary prior to putting this bed into service for
the first time, since the bed has been tested by the manufacturer for electrical safety
and functionality and left our factory in perfect condition.
Before putting the bed into service for the first time:
Remove all transport securing devices and packaging film.
Clean and disinfect the bed.
Before putting the bed into service each time:
The user must check that:
-The bed has been cleaned and disinfected.
-The castors are braked
-The power supply is compatible with the bed (100 - 240 volt AC, 50/60 Hz).
-Allow easy access to the mains plug at all times so that the bed can be
disconnected from the mains, if necessary.
-The plug-in power pack is connected and the cable is routed in such a way that it
cannot be damaged through bed adjustments/being driven over. Hang any cable
which is not being used on the cable holder (see Chapter 4.4.1)
-The power pack, drive cables and handset cable cannot be damaged by the
moving parts of the bed
-This bed is not used in explosive environments caused, for example, by cleaning
agents or anaesthetics.
-This bed is not used in combination with high frequency surgical equipment.
-No obstacles such as bedside cabinets, supply rails or chairs will inhibit
adjustments.
-All adjustment functions are in proper working order and have been checked (see
Chapter 3.1).
The care bed may be put into operation only after carrying out these checks.

If damage or a malfunction is suspected, the care bed must be withdrawn
from service immediately and disconnected from the mains supply until

3.2 LOCATION REQUIREMENTS
There must be sufficient room available to accommodate the bed’s entire range of
adjustments. Furniture, window sills, must not be in the way.
Before using the bed on parquet flooring, check whether the castors could leave
marks on the parquet varnish. The bed can be used on tiles, carpet, linoleum or
laminate flooring without causing any damage.
A properly installed mains socket must be available as close as possible to the
head end of the bed. Position the bed so as to allow easy access to the mains
plug at all times so that the bed can be disconnected from the mains, if necessary.
Features of the Power Supply Unit
The power supply unit is simply plugged into
an electrical socket.
The cable outlet must hang downwards.
The wall socket which you wish to use for the power pack must NOT
be under the bed.
oOtherwise, the moving mattress base frame can rip the power
pack out of the electrical socket during horizontal adjustments.
oIt is possible that irreparable damage can occur to the power
supply unit and a short-circuit in the electrical socket.
Hang any cable which is not being used on the cable holder under
the headboard.
Be careful when moving the bed away: Ensure that the cable is
long enough; unplug the power pack.
Take care when adjusting the height: Maintain a sufficient
distance at the side between the bed and the plug-in power pack to
avoid damage from occurring. (Use a wall spacer, if necessary)

If any other additional equipment is attached to the bed, (e.g. compressors for
positioning systems, etc.), ensure that this is securely fastened and is functioning
properly. Pay special attention here to the safe routing of all loose connector
cables, tubing, etc. If you have any queries or concerns, consult the manufacturer
of the additional equipment or Stiegelmeyer Pflegemöbel.
Observe the following points when positioning the bed to help
minimise the risk of fire due to external influences. Instruct users
on these points!
Preferably use only flame-retardant mattresses and bedding.
Avoid smoking in bed, since the mattress and bedding used may not be resistant
to smokers' accessories.
Only use additional equipment (e.g. electric blankets) and other electrical devices
(e.g. lamps, radios) that are in perfect working order!
Ensure that this equipment is used only for the purpose intended and that devices
are not left unintentionally on or under bedding (danger of overheating)!
To avoid the risk of fire, do not use extension cables or multiple socket bars under
the bed.
