HOW COMPOSTING WORKS
Composting is the natu al p ocess of decomposition that can be helped along by
p oviding the ideal conditions to help you composting toilet wo k at peak pe fo mance.
The ideal conditions fo decomposition to occu depend on seve al facto s: oxygen,
tempe atu e, moistu e content, and the ca bon/nit ogen atio.
Oxygen
Oxygen is ve y impo tant in composting. You compost should be ae ated in o de to
encou age ae obic bacte ia g owth. Ae obic bacte ia a e bacte ia that g ow and live in
the p esence of oxygen and a e ve y efficient in b eaking down waste. To ae ate the
compost and encou age the g owth of these bacte ia, the compost d um should be
tu ned th ee times pe week (10 complete tu ns of the d um).
Tempe atu e
Tempe atu e is anothe impo tant conside ation when composting. Optimal composting
tempe atu es ange between 70-100 ° F (21-38 ° C). Decomposition will slow
significantly o stop completely if the compost becomes too cold (below 55 ° F o 13 °
C). If you a e in an a ea that expe iences tempe atu es below 55 °F (13 ° C) additional
heat is equi ed if the composting toilet will be used continually o f equently. If used
fo inte mittent cottage application (3 - 4 weekends th oughout the cold season) no
additional heat is equi ed. The unit will function as a holding tank until the tempe atu e
wa ms up.
Moistu e
Moistu e is necessa y to achieve good compost. You compost should always be
damp, like you ga den afte you have wate ed it. This moistu e allows the bacte ia to
t avel a ound in the compost so that they can speed decomposition by digesting the
waste. If the compost is too d y, the bacte ia cannot su vive and decomposition will
slow o cease. When adding wate to the compost, you a e aiming fo damp compost,
not satu ated. Too much liquid in the compost limits the amount of oxygen that ae obic
bacte ia equi e to su vive. If no mal u ination is not enough to maintain the co ect
moistu e level in the compost, we encou age you to add additional wate to the d um.
Ca bon/Nit ogen Ratio
Almost all o ganic mate ial will compost. The p ope bulking mate ial and human waste
should be added to the composting toilet. In o de to maintain a good balance between
ca bon- ich mate ials (SUN-MAR Compost Su e Blue) and nit ogen- ich human waste
only.

THE SUN-MAR CENTREX 3000 TOILET
The key to the success of the CENTREX 3000 lies in its th ee chambe design. Each of the
th ee chambe s; patented Bio-d um, compost finishing d awe , and evapo ation chambe ,
have thei own independent envi onments fo optimum efficiency. The CENTREX 3000
elect ic ve sion has a the mostatically cont olled heate and fan assembly to help evapo ate
liquid and should be used whe e the e is a constant elect ical supply. The CENTREX 3000
NE (non-elect ic) ve sion is fo use whe e the e is no continuous elect ic supply. The
CENTREX 3000 NE has no heate but does include a 12 volt fan. Odo less ope ation is
achieved by a 4” vent assisted by the fan which acts like a chimney c eating a pa tial vacuum
within the unit.
The Patented Bio-D um
Unique to Sun-Ma , the patented bio-d um p ovides the necessa y mass to maintain good
compost and allows easy ae ation of the compost by simply tu ning the d um. Excess liquid
will exit th ough a sc een in the bottom of the d um into the evapo ation chambe . Mixing the
Bio-d um is accomplished by otating the handle in a clock-wise di ection. Compost moves
automatically th ough the d um with SUN-MAR’s unique Autoflow ® techology.
The Compost Finishing D awe
The compost finishing d awe sits in the opening in the f ont ight of the unit. Since the
CENTREX 3000 automatically discha ges finished compost into the collection chambe at the
end of the unit, this d awe is used only if you need to emove all compost f om the d um.
Removal of the compost finishing d awe and access panel allows access to the evapo ation
chambe fo cleaning and maintenance pu poses.
The Evapo ation Chambe
The evapo ation chambe is the floo of the unit unde the compost finishing d awe . This is
the a ea whe e any excess liquid will gathe fo evapo ation. A safety d ain exits f om the left
side of the composting toilet which will d ain ove -flow liquid that is not evapo ated to an
app oved facility.
The Collection Chambe
CENTREX 3000 units inco po ate SUN-MAR’s
unique Autoflow ® technology. As the d um otates,
compost moves automatically th ough the d um and
into a sepa ate collection chambe located nea the
end of the unit.

When it is necessa y to lead the vent th ough a wall,
connect one 45° elbow on the vent outlet on the unit.
Using a hole saw o othe app op iate tool, cut a
hole th ough the wall boa d behind the unit so that
the vent pipe can be inse ted into the 45° elbow. Cut
a simila hole on the othe side of the wall that is

simply glue the diffuso ve tically on the topmost
section of vent pipe. The diffuso design encou ages
upd aft, and discou ages wind and weathe f om
going down the vent stack. We do not ecommend
installing anything else on the top of the vent as it
could impede the venting. Unlike wind

Line the bottom of the collection chambe with the plastic bag (p ovided). Place the
collection chambe base on the ight side of the CENTREX 3000 so that the base
ests unde the opening in the patented bio-d um. Place the top of the collection
chambe on the base. SUN-MAR Autoflow® technology allows compost to
automatically deposit into the collection chambe .
When installing the waste pipe f om the toilet to the unit, the following should be
conside ed:-
1) The pipe should be eithe 45 ° o ve tical (if composting unit is di ectly below
toilet), o at a 2-3 ° angle (1/8”-1/4” o 3-13mm d op pe foot maximum) so that
the waste t avels with the liquid.
2) Pipe should not slope upwa ds at any point.
3) Connections should be snug so that waste does not cause blockage.
4) It is ecommended that the waste pipe be no longe than 15 feet (460cm)
without installing a clea out po t(a Y fitting with sc ew on end cap) nea the
toilet to p ovide easy access should it be equi ed.
5) Use a soft sealant, such as silicone fo the connection of the waste pipe to the
unit so that the unit can be moved fo se vicing o othe easons should this
eve be equi ed.
6) Insulate pipe if unit is to be used du ing the winte .
7) Fo longe installations of waste pipe, ensu e the waste pipe is suppo ted
to p event sagging.
1) Make su e the cente of the floo flange is at least
11 inches (280mm) f om the back wall.
2) When Installing a new floo flange, ensu e that the
toilet mounting bolts align p ope ly with ult a low
flush toilet mounting patte n.
3) Secu e flange to floo using flat head sc ews
th ough counte -sunk holes in flange. Inse t bolts

Afte installation is completed do the following:
Step 1 :
Sp ay Compost Quick: Remove the finishing d awe
and sp ay the whole inne floo of the unit unde the
finishing d awe . Sp ay Compost Quick into the patented
bio-d um and the inside of the finishing d awe .
Step 2:
Pou 1 bag of Compost Su e Blue into a bucket and add 2 qua ts of
wa m wate . Add 1/2 of the Mic obe Mix packet to the bucket. Allow
the Compost Su e Blue to abso b the wate (about an hou ).
Step 3:
Scoop the Compost Su e Blue mixtu e into the patented Bio-D um
th ough the access doo on the CENTREX 3000. Rotate the d um
to mix. The opening in the d um must emain open unde the waste pipe.
The CENTREX 3000 toilet is now eady fo use.
Step 4:
Fo elect ic units only. The fan will un continuously 24 hou s
pe day.
120 Volt Use: Plug it in to a th ee p ong elect ical outlet.
240 Volt Use: The unit must use a mains plug with an ea th
connection. Replacement of elect ical components (including the
powe co d and mains plug)must be pe fo med by a qualified pe son
to avoid haza d.
When you fi st sta t up the CENTREX 3000, it will take app oximately 6 weeks at optimum tempe atu es (70-90 ° F)
befo e you will have sufficient quantities of mic obes in the d um to actually achieve good compost. Du ing this time, the
contents of the patented bio-d um sta t out as Compost Su e Blue and waste. Ove the fi st 6 weeks, you will notice that
the compost will hold moistu e and will become mo e unifo mly da k in colo .
Du ing the fi st six weeks, you may notice that some Compost Su e Blue has fallen th ough the d um sc een onto the
evapo ation chambe to the left of the finishing d awe . This should be aked out and emoved with the ake tool p ovided
with the unit.
NOTE: Regula toilet pape may be used. Toilet pape is a good sou ce of ca bon fo you compost so it may be
added to the Bio-D um™

d ains do not get clogged.
Add Wate & Mic obe Mix
Add some wa m wate to the emaining compost, enough to ensu e that it is quite moist. Also, add some Sun-Ma
Mic obe Mix (two of scoops) to give the compost pile a “kick-sta t” and otate the d um seve al times to mix. If you
composting toilet is elect ic, plug it in and use fo anothe season.
Winte Use
No Winte Use
Just add wate , lots of wate . Soak the compost in the d um to p event it f om d ying out befo e Sp ing. Make su e to
unplug the unit if elect ic. If you have a non-elect ic unit, it may be a good idea to place something ove the diffuso to
p event animals (who a e looking fo a home at this time of yea ) f om getting in.
Occasional Winte Use
If the unit will be used fo 3-4 weekends th oughout the winte season then it is conside ed occasional use. All of the same
conside ations should be taken with these units to winte ize them. When the tempe atu e dips below 55 ° F (13 ° C),
composting activity will dec ease d amatically. These units do not need to be kept wa m and will act only as a holding tank
du ing the winte months until they wa m up enough in the sp ing to begin composting again. Du ing the winte , the
compost will f eeze into a solid mass so the d um should not be tu ned as it may damage the composting toilet. With this
in mind, it is a good idea to emove enough compost befo e it gets too cold to make oom in the d um fo winte use.
Heavy o Residential Winte Use
These units should be kept in a heated a ea and all winte ization tips should be followed, including the following:
1) Vent Pipe - elect ic models; all 2" vent pipe should be insulated if they a e exposed to the outside o in an unheated
a ea. If you a e in an a ea that expe iences ext eme winte conditions, we ecommend that heat tape should be applied
to the exposed vent pipe to p event ice blockages.
2) Safety D ain - all models; we ecommend that the safety d ain should be installed and insulated above the f ost line.
The e will be less evapo ation in the winte so this will help with any excess liquid. If possible, heat tape can be applied
to the safety d ain to p event ice blockage.
3) Keep it wa m; If the composting toilet is used f equently in the winte then the composting pa t of the unit should be
kept in a wa m place. Below 55 ° F (13 ° C), composting actions slows d amatically so if it is in a place that falls below
this tempe atu e, a sou ce of heat should be p ovided fo the unit so that it can keep up with constant use.
Wa ning: The wate valve must be d ained (o emoved) if the ult a low flush toilet is installed
in an a ea whe e f eezing tempe atu es a e anticipated to p event f eezing and c acking of
valve.

USING THE TOILET
Deposit you toilet pape , step on the foot pedal to flush, close the lid and walk away…you job is
done. If you plan on making a mo e substantial deposit and would like mo e wate in the bowl, simply
lift the foot pedal up and the bowl will fill. When you have the desi ed amount of wate , let the pedal
d op back in place and do what you have to do.
EVERY OTHER DAY
Tu n the handle to mix and ae ate the compost. If the toilet is being used p edominantly fo u ination,
be su e to add at least one cup of bulking mixtu e (added at the composting unit) pe ave age amount
of use s pe day. At the composting unit (not the flush toilet), open the access po t to the d um. Add
Compost Su e at the ate of one cup pe pe son pe day, so, if the e a e two people staying, you
would add 4 cups of Compost Su e all at once (2 people x 2 days = 4cups). To avoid messy waste
pipe obst uctions, Compost Su e should always be added at the composting unit, not the flush toilet.
G asp the c ank handle and tu n in a clock-wise di ection fo 10 complete tu ns of the d um . Keep in
mind that one evolution of the d um = 7 complete tu ns of the handle. When the d um has been

THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT! By tu ning the handle counte clockwise, you a e cente ing
the opening in the d um unde the waste pipe. To ensu e that the e a e no messy accidents, do not
skip this step!!
CHECK THE VOLUME OF THE BIO-DRUM™
To speed up composting, add one scoop of Mic obe Mix eve y second week, and ensu e that the
d um is not mo e than ½ full.
ATTENTION: the Cent ex 3000 elect ic model must emain plugged in to an
