Sureguard ScareCrow®Motion Activated Sprinkler is an innovative and
humane way to keep most unwanted animals and birds out of an area.
It’s environmentally friendly and a safe alternative to chemical repellents.
Sureguard ScareCrow uses a Motion Sensor to detect the body heat of
animals and birds. Once triggered, it deploys a burst of water combined
with unexpected noise and motion, creating a safe and effective deterrent.

Parts Guide

Sprinkler Outlet: Screw the Sprinkler-head Outlet to the body of the Controller.
Spray Spread Adjustment: Adjust anticlockwise for a long-throw fine stream.
Up/Down Distance Adjustment: Rotate dial clockwise for maximum distance.
Left/Right Angular Adjustment: Adjust the two rings and check the left and right stop
angles by rotating the Sprinkler by hand in each direction, noting where it clicks and
stops. Adjust to no more than the Sensors 110-degree viewing angle. Adjust to suit
the circumstances; For example, if the animal always enters at a specific point, you
could just direct the Sprinkler there.
Motion Sensor: This is behind the sensor window. It detects body heat from the
animal or bird as it moves across the viewing area (not cold-blooded animals).
Low Battery: Behind the window is a Red LED to indicate when to replace batteries.
Battery Compartment: Slide the battery door down to open. An extra sealed cover
protects the batteries. Pull it free. Insert two ALKALINE AA 1.5 Volt batteries before
use. Do not substitute other types of battery. Remove batteries for storage.
In-Line Water Filter: The filter is a wire mesh to stop dirt and stones from entering
and damaging the Sprinkler valve. Please check the filter regularly and remove any
debris. Failure to do so could cause damage. TIP: Before connecting the hose to the
Sprinkler, run water through the hose to clear any debris carried in by ants, etc.
Hose Inlet: Attach a 12mm hose here and connect to your tap. Always fully open the
tap so the Sprinkler gets the correct water flow. If your water pressure is low and the
spray is weak, try using a shorter hose or larger diameter hose.
Daisy Chain: To install several ScareCrow Sprinklers, you can economise on hoses
using this Daisy-Chain feature. Attach another hose to connect any number of
Sprinklers in the chain. (Extra hose connector not included). NOTE: Each Sprinkler
activates independently and responds to the motion in its viewing field.
Metal Ground Peg: Push the entire length into firm soil.
Night Mode Sensor: The Sensor responds to light and dark. Remove the Sensor Cap
so the Sprinkler only activates at night. Attach the Cap for 24-hour operation.
Sensitivity Adjustment: Setting 0 is OFF. Setting 9 is maximum sensitivity
(recommended for Night-Mode usage). For 24-hour use, adjust between 1 and 9
according to your circumstances.

Sureguard ScareCrow 5

* For best detection, animals or birds must move ACROSS the Motion Sensor’s 110-degree
viewing area rather than moving directly towards the Sensor.
* The Sensor has three vertical detection bands. The main one detects horizontal movement.
Another points upwards for detecting taller targets or incoming birds. Another points
downwards for detecting birds paddling in pools.
* The Motion Sensor must have an unobstructed view of the detection area. Avoid obstacles
and never cover the Sensor.
* Avoid pointing the Sensor toward foliage as that may cause false triggering during windy
daylight hours. (Not applicable if using Night-Mode).
* Avoid pointing the Sensor towards the sun or dappled sunlit areas.
* Around pools, place the Sensor at less than 1.5m from the pool’s edge so it will detect
motion both on the water and around the pool’s edge. If you move it further away from the
edge, you have to raise the Sensor’s height so it can see the water. However, the Sensor may
no longer detect motion around the pool’s edge.
* To protect areas larger than 10m x 16m, install several Sureguard ScareCrows facing into
the protection area. For example, to cover a large swimming pool, locate them at either end of
the pool or elsewhere at no more than 10m intervals.
* The Metal Ground Peg must be placed firmly in the ground to avoid false triggering due to
device movement from strong winds. For non-soil areas, place the Metal Ground Peg into a
movable soil-filled heavy pot.
* Leave the Sureguard ScareCrow switched ON even if the wrong behaviour ceases.
* Select a 12mm hose in good condition, of sufficient length, and avoid using joiners. Water
pressure will decrease with increasing hose length, and this will reduce spray coverage.
Check operation with a short hose to become familiar with the performance at typical
operating pressure. If necessary, use 18mm hose for more pressure.
* Before disconnecting the hose, turn the water OFF and activate the Sprinkler with your hand
to de-pressurise the hose.
* To test your installation, connect the hose and switch the water ON. Stand behind or to the
side of the Sprinkler. Slowly move your hand left to right about 1m in front of the Motion
Sensor. Confirm the Sprinkler sprays where you want. TIP: Three activations in 60 seconds
will trigger a water-saving feature, disabling the device for 5 minutes. To manually reset,
remove the Night Mode Sensor Cap, wait 5 seconds, then re-cap it.
Placement Guide
Sureguard ScareCrow 6

The Sureguard ScareCrow has the ability to modify animal behaviour, but animals
have natural behaviours and motivations that should also be considered. It may take
longer to get results when an animal has strong motivation. For example, an animal
eating your garden plants is probably doing so because little food is available.
Persistent behaviours can sometimes take longer to control. For example, deterring a
neighbour’s dog from visiting will likely get quick results because the dog is aware it’s
out of its territory. However, your dog may not be initially controlled, until the
deterrent becomes a nuisance to your dog.
How long the modified behaviour persists can vary. For example, ducks may stop
visiting your swimming pool and never return, whereas a possum may stop visiting
for a time but return when food is in short supply. Therefore, however quick the result
should be, don’t be to quick to switch the Sureguard ScareCrow OFF. You want to
send a strong message if the animal returns: “this deterrent is always here to
protect”. An exception might be when the bird or animal visits at a predictable time,
for example, at sunrise, and then leaves. You may want to attach a programmed water
timer to your hose to more finely control the activation of the Sprinkler.
Bush Turkeys: Leave the device active continually.
Cats: Visiting cats should quickly learn to stay away. Your pet cat may require more
time to control. Leave in place for the deterrent effect to persist.
Chickens: Leave the device active continually.
Cockatoos: If the birds are at or close to ground level, the Sureguard ScareCrow can
deter them. NOTE: It is not suitable if the birds are in trees or high up.
Dogs: Visiting dogs should quickly learn to stay away because they are intruding on
another’s territory. Your pet dog may require more time to understand the deterrent,
and it should be left in place for the deterrent effect to persist. Don’t allow your pet to
play with the device as a toy. Some dogs enjoy water on a hot day. So, don’t
introduce your dog to the deterrent on a hot day, or it may become his/her toy!
Deer: Leave the device active continually.
Ducks & Geese: If these birds are fouling your swimming pool area, you can expect
quick results but leave the device active for a few weeks. Pool areas generally require
Sureguard ScareCrow 7
Animal Control Guide

two or more Sureguard ScareCrows installed, usually one at either end. If the pool is
more than 15m long, install extra ones along the length of the pool.
Foxes: Use the Night-Mode setting with Sensitivity on maximum. Leave switched ON
as long as required.
Possums: Use the Night-Mode setting for best results with Sensitivity on maximum
and leave the device active continually. If the possum is walking along a fence, up a
tree, climbing a building structure, etc., then ensure the Sensor is rigidly mounted at
that height. If the possum is at ground level, install it at ground level.
Rabbits: Leave the device active continually.
Seagulls and Pelicans: Place the Sureguard ScareCrow as close to the protected
area as practical. Do not point toward moving water, moving boats, etc. Do not fix to
a boat because the movement will cause false activation.
Wallabies and Kangaroos: Leave the device active continually.
•Inspect and clean the filter mesh whenever attaching a hose
•
If temperatures are expected to drop below 0°C move the ScareCrow indoors to prevent
damage from freezing.
•
DO NOT use with bore water, saltwater, dam water or brackish water. Connect only to
clean drinking water.
•The water pressure supplied from taps can vary significantly from location to
location. If your water pressure is too high, you MUST use a pressure reducer in-line
between the tap & hose. Sureguard has tested and recommends the Pope 300kPa
model, which is available at many hardware stores for around $10. If you choose
another brand, do not go higher than 300kPa. Going lower will reduce the spray
distance.

Sensor does not ‘see’ animals:
1/ The Sensor needs an unobstructed view of the animal. 2/ Install so the Sensor
views animals walking ACROSS the viewing area, not toward the Sensor. 3/ The
Sensor must be installed about the same height as the animal. 4/ Clean the Sensor
with a damp cloth. 5/ On hot days, the Sensor may not detect the animal’s heat. This
is unavoidable if the temperature of the animal and surroundings are about equal. 6/
An animal moving very slowly or very fast may not be detected. 7/ Cold-blooded
animals can’t be detected. 8/ Try a new set of batteries.
Sprinkler is spraying as soon as water is connected.
Install batteries or replace the batteries.
Sprinkler is not spraying:
1/ Your water tap might be switched off. 2/ Water pressure may be too high or too
low. 3/ Your hose might be kinked. 4/ Your hose might be blocked. 5/ Check for
blockage at the In-Line Water Filter. 6/Try a new set of batteries.
Sprinkler is spraying without much force:
1/ Your water tap MUST be fully on. 2/ Debris may be blocking the In-Line Water
Filter. Check and clean. 3/ Your hose may be kinked. 4/ Your hose may be blocked.
Sprinkler is activating when no animal is present:
1/ If the device has moved recently, allow 10 minutes to stabilise to its new heat
environment. 2/ Try a lower Sensitivity Control number. 3/ Avoid pointing toward:
◊ Areas where people or pets regularly pass by.
◊ Foliage that might move about in the breeze.
◊ Dappled sunlit areas that might fluctuate in brightness and heat intensity.
◊ Upwards toward the sky.
◊ Sources of hot air movement, e.g. Air-conditioning equipment, roof areas, etc.
◊ Moving water.
◊ Car headlights.
