Introduction
The AP 100 802.11b Access Port provides area RF coverage to 802.11b wireless network
devices. The AP 100 Access Port includes different installing options, allowing best
placement for optimum range.
The standard mounting base allows securing the unit to most surfaces with two screws.
The above-ceiling mounting option secures the unit to the ceiling using the ceiling-
mount light pipe screw.
The AP 100 Access Port receives power and transfers data through the same
(Ethernet) cable.

6
The AP 100 Access Port has two separate antenna configuration models: an internal
antenna model and external antenna connector model. The external antenna connector
model allows for Symbol approved antennas to be attached to the AP 100 Access Port.
The two models are shown in the following figures.

Surface Mounting
The AP 100 Access Port will mount to most surfaces using the mounting screws and
surface-mount assembly.
Note: Refer to installation plans for the designated connector.
10

Specifications & Installation
11
Above-Ceiling Mounting
Some installations require AP 100 Access Port mounting above the ceiling tile. This type
of installation hides the unit and cable away from visual access.
Use this installation in plenum-rated ceiling configurations. Verify that the
attaching Ethernet cable is also plenum rated.
To prevent damage to the device, use care when pulling cables attached to a
mounted unit.

Ethernet cable should be strain relieved by tie wrapping the cable to a nearby
building structure. Do not tie wrap to electrical wiring.
For external antenna connector model, cable away to a Symbol approved
antenna.
External Antenna Power Levels
For external antenna power settings, please refer to the WS 5000 Wireless Switch
Reference Guide.
Power/Data (RJ-45) Connection
The AP 100 Access Port receives power from the Ethernet cable. It supports the
following Symbol-branded Power-Over-Ethernet devices:
• Symbol Power Injector 1 Port
• Symbol Power Injector 12 Port
Review installation plans to determine device placement and cable routing.

FCC RF Exposure Guidelines
To comply with FCC RF exposure requirements, antennas that are mounted
externally at remote locations or operating near users at stand-alone desktop
of similar configurations must operate with a minimum separation distance of 20cm
from all persons.
Radio Frequency Interference Requirements
Note: This equipment has been tested and found to
comply with the limits for a Class B digital device,
pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are
designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful
interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses, and can
radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the
instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However there is
no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this
equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can

18
be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to
correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:
• Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna
• Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver
• Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which
the receiver is connected
• Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.
For External Antenna Model
To comply with FCC regulations the following antennas must be installed with cables as
long or longer than the minimum configuration:
• ML-2499-BMMA1-01 Heavy Duty, High Gain Outdoor Mast Mount Omni
• ML-2499-BPDA1-01 Heavy Duty 10° Directional High Gain Parabolic Dish

• ML-2499-BYGA2-01 Heavy-duty Outdoor 35° High-gain Directional Yagi
The minimum configuration consists of PN ML-1499-LAK1-01 N-to-RBNC jumper and
lightning arrestor followed by at least 10 ft. of low loss cable PN ML-1499-10JK-01.
Shortening either cable, substituting a lower loss cable, or omitting the lightning arrestor
violates the conditions of the FCC Grant covering this equipment and is prohibited.
To comply with European and International regulations, use only Symbol approved
antennas. To ensure the correct antenna configuration and power settings are used, refer
to the Wireless LAN Switch System Reference Guide.
