Chapter 1 Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the CS-5100 LAS.
The CS-5100 LAS enables the CS-5100 to automatically analyze the samples coming from the tracks of the
facility.
When the CS-5100 detects the sample that was transported by the LAS (Laboratory Automation System) to
the sample aspiration position, the sample arm A of the CS-5100 automatically aspirates and analyzes the
sample.
After the aspiration, the LAS removes the sample automatically from the sample aspiration position.
You can analyze the sample on the CS-5100 sampler and the STAT sample while CS-5100 is connected to
the LAS (for the track sample).
This manual explains the following procedures when operating the CS-5100 using the tracks:
• Specifications
• Basic operations
• Analyzing a sample
• Checking an analysis result
• QC analysis
• System settings

• Creating calibration curves
• Troubleshooting
See the CS-5100 Instructions for Use for handling and operation of the CS-5100, such as installation of the

(LAS-related communication settings are not explained in this manual and the CS-5100 Instructions for Use
as your service representative does these settings.)
In addition, procedures to handle and operate the LAS are not explained in this manual. For details on the
procedures, please contact the LAS manufacturer.
In this manual, “tracks” are referred to as the mechanical lines on the LAS whereby samples are conveyed.

1.2 Protected names

1.3 Conditions of use
Please be advised that the following conditions apply when analyzing a sample from the tracks:
Analysis method
The instrument analyzes the sample on the tracks after it acquired the order information from the host computer
according to the sample ID that was identified by the LAS. You cannot register an order manually.
Analysis mode
All of the analysis will be carried out in normal mode.
This system does not support the micro-sample mode.
Usable sample tubes
A capped sample tube cannot be used for any analysis.
* The usable sample tube type and required sample volume are the same as the ones required for the CS-5100.

Risk of infection
This symbol indicates a possible hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in
infection by pathogens and others.

1.4 Design and function
(1) Sample aspiration position
The samples on the tracks are aspirated at this position.
* Product image is for illustrative purposes only. The shape of
the protective cover in the sample aspiration position may
differ from that of the actual product.
(2) Cautions for probe
This symbol indicates the following precautions.
Risk of infection
Never touch the tip of the probe.
The probe tip is sharp and very dangerous. Handle it with care.
Accidentally touching the probe tip could cause injury and infection by pathogens.

Chapter 2 Basic Operations
This chapter explains what you need to know before operating the instrument and the basic operations.
2.1 Turning ON the power
Follow the procedure below to turn ON the power of this instrument (steps 1 and 2 may be reversed).
1Turn ON the power of the CS-5100.

2 Turn the LAS power ON.
The method to turn the LAS power ON differs depending on the instrument you use.
For details, see the LAS manual.
2.2 Checking the LAS connection status
After the power is turned ON, the status bar on the IPU indicates the connection status between the CS-5100 and the
LAS.

2.3 Disconnecting the LAS
Follow the procedure below to disconnect the CS-5100 and LAS before analyzing a sample with CS-5100 by itself
without any LAS connection, replacing the reagent, or discarding the waste fluid from the instrument.
1On the IPU status bar, press the LAS setting button of the LAS connection
status display.

The dialog box on the right appears.
2 Tick the [Suspend Processing of LAS Samples and use the instrument] check
box and press [OK].
The CS-5100 and the LAS are now disconnected and the dialog box closes.
* To reconnect the CS-5100 and the LAS, remove the [Suspend Processing of LAS Samples and use the
instrument] checkbox in the same dialog box and press [OK].
2.4 Shutting down
To shut down the instrument properly, refer to the procedures described in the CS-5100 Instructions for Use.

LAS setting button Disconnects or reconnects the connection between the CS-5100 and the
LAS.

Instrument control
status
Lights orange or turns OFF depending on the control status of the
instrument.
Indicator Control status
Lit • The analysis of the sample on the tracks is disabled.
• The LAS is disconnected by the LAS setting button.
OFF The instrument is ready to analyze a sample on the
tracks.

This chapter explains the sample analysis when operating the CS-5100 using the tracks.
3.1 Analyzing the sample on the tracks
Analyze samples using the tracks.
The instrument analyzes the sample on the tracks after it acquired the order information from the host computer
according to the sample ID that was identified by the LAS. You cannot manually register an order that is going to be
analyzed on the tracks.
See the CS-5100 Instructions for Use for more details on the prerequisite settings for the analysis through the host
inquiry.

Check that the communication status is green on the LAS connection status display of the status bar.

Note:
Even after the analysis on the track sample is completed, the CS-5100 status will remain at
[Processing] (analyzing) for the subsequent analysis.
When you open the light shield lid to refill the consumable supplies or to carry out maintenance
work, press the LAS setting button on the status bar and disconnect the LAS.

Note:
• All of the analysis on the track sample will be carried out in normal mode.
The instrument analyzes the sample in normal mode even if the mode was set to [Micro-
Sample Mode] in the [System Settings] dialog box (under [Instrument Settings] →[Sampling
Mode]).
• In the case where you cannot connect the instrument to the host computer, you can set and
analyze the sample on the tracks with specific analysis parameters.

• The order on the track sample cannot be edited on the IPU.

2 Press the start button on the CS-5100’s Main Unit.
Or press the [Start] button on the IPU toolbar.
According to the sample ID that was identified by the LAS, the instrument acquires the order information from
the host computer.
The sample on the tracks is carried to the sample aspiration position for the analysis.
3.2 Analyzing a sample while analyzing another sample on
the tracks
While analyzing a sample on the tracks, you can analyze another sample placed on the CS-5100 sampler and the
STAT sample.
3.2.1 Analyzing a sample on the sampler while analyzing another
sample on the tracks
Through the host inquiry or manual order registration, you can also analyze a sample that is set on the sampler
while analyzing another sample on the tracks.
See the CS-5100 Instructions for Use for more details on the sample analysis on the sampler.

1Register the order.
An order registration is not required if you are analyzing through the host inquiry.
2 Set the sample rack containing a sample to the right rack pool of the CS-5100
sampler.
This halts the analysis on the tracks and starts the analysis on the sampler’s sample.
After aspiration of the sampler's sample is completed, the analysis on the tracks resumes automatically.
Note:
The sample on the tracks, sample on the sampler and STAT sample are analyzed in the
following priority order:
1. STAT sample
2. Sample on the sampler
3. Sample on the tracks

3.2.2 Analyzing the STAT sample while analyzing the sample on the
tracks
Through the host inquiry or manual order registration, you can also analyze a STAT sample while analyzing
another sample on the tracks.

1Set a STAT sample to the CS-5100.
2 Register the order.
An order registration is not required if you are analyzing through the host inquiry.
3 Close the STAT/buffer table cover and press the start button.
Or press the [Start] button on the IPU toolbar.
This halts the analysis on the tracks and proceeds the analysis on the STAT sample.
After aspiration of the STAT sample is completed, the analysis on the tracks resumes automatically.

This chapter explains how to check the analysis results of the track sample.
4.1 [Joblist] screen
The analysis results of the track sample can be reviewed on the [Joblist] screen.
See the CS-5100 Instructions for Use for more details on the [Joblist] screen.

For the analysis results of the track sample, the [Rack No. - Pos.] field will appear on the [Joblist] screen as follows:
4.2 Displaying the analysis results of the track sample only
You can specify the display conditions for the [Joblist] screen and display the analysis results only of track sample.
1Register the display conditions through the [Display Condition] dialog box for
the [Joblist] screen.
The following procedures explain how to set the display to only show the analysis results of the track sample.
(1) Press the [Joblist] icon on the menu screen or the [Joblist] button on the toolbar.
The [Joblist] screen appears.
(2) Press [Customize] on the operation panel.
The [Customize] dialog box appears.
* If [Customize] is not displayed, press [More] to switch the page.
(3) Press the [Display Condition] tab.
(4) Press [Add].
The [Filter / Sort / View] dialog box appears.
(5) Press the [Filter] tab.
(6) Enter the display condition name in the [Display Condition] field.
(7) Tick the [Use Filter] checkbox.
(8) Select both [Specify Sample Distinction Code.] and [LAS Sample].
Remove all other checkboxes.
(9) Press [Save].
The [Filter / Sort / View] dialog box closes and the conditions are saved.
[Rack No. - Pos.] The number is a sequential number with [L] at the beginning, which is obtained after
turning ON the IPU (e.g. L00001).

2 Select the item that you specified at step 1 for the display conditions of the
[Joblist] screen.

The analysis results only of track sample appear on the [Joblist] screen.

This chapter explains the QC analysis when operating the CS-5100 using the tracks.
5.1 Performing the QC analysis with the control set on the
CS-5100 before analyzing a sample on the tracks
Before analyzing a sample on the tracks, disconnect the CS-5100 from the LAS and perform the QC analysis with the
control that is set on the CS-5100.
1Disconnect the CS-5100 from the LAS.

2 Set the control on the CS-5100 to perform QC analysis.

Through the host inquiry or manual order registration, you can perform the QC analysis with the control that is set on
the CS-5100 while analyzing a sample on the tracks.

5.2.1 Performing the QC analysis with the control set into the sample
rack while analyzing a sample on the tracks
1Register the order.
An order registration is not required if you are analyzing through the host inquiry.
2 Set the sample rack containing controls in the right rack pool of the CS-5100
sampler.
This halts the analysis on the track sample and starts the QC analysis.
When aspiration of the control is completed, the analysis on the track sample will resume automatically.
5.2.2 Performing the QC analysis with the control set on the reagent
table while analyzing a sample on the tracks
1Check that the control is set on the reagent table.
If not, set the control on the reagent table.

2 Register the order.
This halts the analysis on the track sample and starts the QC analysis.
When aspiration of the control is completed, the analysis on the track sample will resume automatically.

Perform QC analysis using the tracks.
The instrument analyzes the sample on the tracks after it acquired the order information from the host computer
according to the sample ID that was identified by the LAS. You cannot register an order manually.
