4.2GeneralDescription
TheLivingHPisextractairventilationunitwithintegratedheatpumpsectiontorecoverheatfromextract
airanddeliverheattobuildingheatingsystem.TheLivingHPunitshouldbeintegratedinbuildingextract
airventilationsystemandisdesignedtocontrolre/smokefanduringnormaloperation.
Thestopsandstartsoftheunitarebasedontheambientairtemperature.Thedefaultvaluesetto
starttheunitis+15°C.Thisvaluecanbechangedinthecontrolpanel.Otherconditionswhichshould
bemetfortheheatrecoverytostart:
•waterowshouldbemorethan0,5m³/h
•extractairtemperatureshouldbemorethan+10°C
•airpressuredropshouldbemorethan30Pa
Thesevaluescanalsobechangedinthecontrolmenu.

Theheatpumpreducestheextractairtemperatureasmuchaspossiblewithoutgoingbelowsafetylimits
andcontrollingtheunittoproducemaximumheatingcapacityatmaximumefciency.Themaxleaving
watertemperaturecanbe+60°C.
TheLivingHPunitcanworkintwomodes:summerandwinter.
4.2.1Summer/Wintermode
Summermode:whenambientairtemperatureexceedssettemperaturevalueinthecontrolpanel(default
+20°C),asignalissenttostoptheextractairfanandheatpump.DampersAandCareclosed.Another
signalissenttoopenre/smokedamperBandtostartre/smokefaninorderforwasteairfromthe
residencetobeventedoutside.Insummermodeheatrecoveryisnotpossible.
Wintermode:whenambientairtemperaturegoesbelowsettemperaturevalueinthecontrolpanel
(default+15°C),asignalissenttostopre/smokefan,re/smokedamperBwillbeclosed.TheLiving
HPextractairfanandheatpumpisturnedon,dampersAandCareopen,airtravelsthroughtheunit.
Theheatrecoveryisfullyoperational.
4.2.2Firefunction
Firefunctionisactivatedbysmokeandresensor.Thesensormustbemountedintheductbefore
re/smokedamperB.FirefunctionisusedtoprotecttheLivingHPunitfromsmokeandheatincaseof
reemergency.Ifsmokeisdetectedinwintermodetheunitisstopped,dampersAandCareclosed.
SignalissenttoopensmokefandamperBandtostartsmokefanatfullcapacityimmediatelyinorder
toextractsmokefromtheresidence.
Inthesummermodeifre/smokealarmisactivated,there/smokefanfromregulationmodewillbe
immediatelyswitchedtofullcapacity.Innormalconditionsre/smokefanspeediscontrolledbytheunit
basedondifferentialpressureinextractairduct.
4.3Heatrecovering
Theheatfromextractairisrecoveredthoughttheheatpumptoproducehotwater,whichthencanbeuse
toheattheradiatorsystem.
4.4Thecoolingfunction
Therefrigerantiscirculatedinacompletelyclosedsysteminthefollowingorder:anevaporator,a
compressor,acondenserandtheexpansionvalve.Atthebeginningofthecycletheliquidrefrigerantgoes
throughtheexpansionvalve,pressuredecreasesandcoldmixtureofliquidandgasenterstheevaporator.
Theexpansionvalvekeepsalowpressureintheevaporatorandcontrolsstablesuperheatingofrefrigerant
gas.Heatistakenfromextractairwhenpassingtheevaporatorandthereforeextractairtemperatureis
lowered.Aftertherefrigerantleavestheevaporatorcoilithasabsorbedheatfromextractairandbecame
agas.Thesuperheatedrefrigerantgasentersthecompressorwhichmechanicallypressurizesthegas.
Thisprocessincreasesrefrigeranttemperaturesotherefrigerantleavesthecompressorasthehotgas.
Afterapressureincreaseinthecompressor,therefrigerantgaspassingthecondenseristransformedinto
uidthroughcondensationandtherebyheatemission.Heatissubmittedtothewatercircuitthatispassing
thecondenser.Heathasaccordinglybeentransferredfromthecondensertothewater.Afterleavingthe
condenserinawarmliquidstatetherefrigerantpassestheexpansionvalvewhichdropsthepressureon
thewarmliquidandthusdropsitstemperature.Therefrigerantleavestheexpansionvalveasamixtureof
coldliquidandgasandtherebytherefrigerationcyclestartsagain.
4.5Powercontrol
Thecompressor(CPR)arestep-lesscontrolledbetween,inthefrequencyconverter(FC),setminimum
andmaximumfrequency.

4.6Powerlimitation
Thefrequencyconverter(FC)iscontinuouslysensingthecondensingpressureviathehighpressure
sensor(HPT)andgraduallyslowsdownthespeedofthecompressor,ifthepressureexceedstheset
limitationvalue.Thisisdonetoavoidahighpressurealarm.
4.7Componentsandfunction
4.7.1Compressor
ThecompressorinLivingHPisahigh-efciency,variablespeedscrollcompressor.Itisdesignedespecially
forspeedcontrolandcannotrunwithoutfrequencyconverter.Speedandbythatcoolingcapacityis
regulatedbychangingtheoperatingfrequency,themaximumworkingrangeofthecompressorisnoless
than20to120rps(revolutionspersecond).Inthesmallerunitsizesthemaximumfrequencyislimitedvia
asettinginthefrequencyconverter.Controllingofthecompressoriscompletelyautomaticaccordingto
theneedofthepremisesandthesignalcomesviathecontrolunitCareltothefrequencyconverter.
4.7.2Compressorprotection
Thecompressorisprotectedbythefollowing:
•Highpressureswitchinthehighpressureside(HPZ)
•Lowpressureswitchonthelowpressureside(LPZ)
•Refrigerantdischargegastemperaturesensor(HTT)
•Ifanyoftheaboveprotectionsaretriggeredtheunitwillbestoppedandcausewillbedisplayedinthe
alarmscreen.Manualacknowledgmentandresetmustbedonebeforethecompressorcanstartagain.
4.7.3Frequencyconverter
Thefrequencyconverterofthecompressorislocatedintheelectricalcabinet.Theprogrammable
controllerreceivesacontrolsignalcorrespondingtothecurrentheatingloadfromthecontrolunitCarel
andthen,viafrequencyconverter,regulatesthecompressorsspeedaccordingtotheactualheating
load.Theprogrammablecontrollerhasalsoahighpressuresensor(HPT)connected.Thissensor
continuouslymeasuringthepressureintheheatingsystem.Ifthepressureexceedsthesetvalueinthe
programmablecontrollertheoutputfrequencyisreducedandtherebythecompressorsspeedwillbe
reducedsothatthepressurewillnotrisetothelevelwerethehighpressureswitch(HPZ)onthehigh
pressuresidewilltrigger.Thecompressorisprotectedfromfaststartandstopsbyanrestartdelay
functionintheprogrammablecontroller.
4.7.4Refrigerant
TherefrigerantisoftypeR410A,thesystemcomespre-lledandtestedatthefactory.Ontopofthe
LivingHParethehighandlowpressuresidemeasuringpoints(tappings).Concerningthecontroland
reportingoftherefrigerantinstallation,seechapter.
4.7.5CondenserandEvaporator
Theevaporatorcoilismadeofcoppertubeswithaluminiumnsandisusedtoabsorbheatfromextract
air.Abrazedplateheatexchangerisusedasacondensertotransferheattothewatersystem.The
condenserismadeofstainlesssteelplatesbrazedtogetherwitheveryplateturned180degreesin
oppositiontoeachother.Thisdesigncreatestwohighlyturbulentuidchannelsthatowinopposite
directionsoveramassivesurfacearea.

4.7.6Filters
LivingHPcomeswiththepairofclassM5ltersandG4pre-ltersinstalledinthefactory.Filtersareused
tolterextractedairfromtheresidenceinordertopreventdustgatheringoncomponentsinsideofthe
unit.Filtersneedtobereplacedwhenpolluted.Newsetsoflterscanbeacquiredfromyourinstallerora
wholesaler.Optionally,lterqualityF7canbeinstalledforextractairltering.
Theltertypeislabelledonthetopofthelter.
4.7.7Damper
Thefunctionofthedamperistodirecttheairow.Whentheunitisoff,extractdamperAandexhaust
damperCareclosedandtheFire/SmokedamperBisopentomakeairowdirectlytotheoutside.When
theunitisoperating,extractandexhaustdampersareopenandtheFire/Smokedamperisclosedtomake

4.7.8Driptray
Thedriptrayislocatedundertheevaporator/brinecoilandcollectsthewatercondensethatperiodically
occurduringthecoolingoperation.Thedriptrayismadeofstainlesssteelandhasa32mmconnection
forconnectingthedrainpipe.Thedriptrayhasanelectricalheatertopreventthewatercondensefrom
