Use of Third Party Software
TAC software is delivered for use on IBM and compatible PCs. While your PC is capable of
running other third party software while running I/NET, trying to do so may present
general operational difficulties. This is particularly true if the other third party software is
memory resident. When used as it is intended, the TAC software is also memory resident.
The use of more than one memory resident program at the same time may impose unre-
solvable PC system parameter conflicts and may cause one or more of the memory resident
programs to fail.
No computer system is immune to software viruses, and they can be extremely damaging
should they attack databases and/or operating programs. Such an attack on the I/NET
system may be particularly damaging since its database output is directed towards control.
The only absolute safeguard against viral attack is to prevent any third party software from
being installed on the same computer with the TAC software. An acceptable safeguard is to
allow only authorized operators to run third party software and to make sure that all such
software is original, direct from a reputable vendor, and that the software has not been
copied from some other machine: i.e., if the seal is broken, don’t use it.
TAC makes no claims or commitments regarding the use of any third party software, other
than MS-DOS and Windows 95/98/NT in conjunction with the PC programs supplied by
TAC, and offers no support in accommodating the use of same. Furthermore, TAC accepts
no liability for system failures that may result from the use of any third party software with
TAC software.

Workstation Requirements
Following is the recommended minimum configuration for a
workstation running I/NET:
✦Pentium (200 MHz)
✦32 MB of RAM
6

Workstation Requirements Before You Begin
1-2 I/NET 2000 Getting Started
Note: If AMT filtering is vital to your I/NET system, we highly recommend
the implementation of at least a Pentium II, 400 MHz, with 128 MB
of RAM.
✦200 MB of available hard drive space
✦CD-ROM drive
✦Video display of 800 x 600 (minimum)
✦Microsoft Windows 98 or NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later
Note: If your workstation will be used as a Filemaster, it must be configured
with Windows NT and Service Pack 3 or later. A Windows 98 work-
station cannot be used as the Filemaster.
You must have administrative privileges to install programs on a
Windows NT workstation.
✦While not required, an uninterruptable power supply (UPS)
is highly recommended.
If you plan to use I/NET with an Ethernet LAN, you must also have
a valid LAN connection that includes the following:
✦Microsoft TCP/IP
✦Properly assigned static IP address
✦IP Mask
✦Gateway IP address
If you plan to print event action messages from your workstation,
you must also have the following:
✦A printer capable of printing single lines of text without
ejecting the page between each line. Dot-matrix printers typi-
cally support this single line feed capability and are recom-
mended for use as the event printer.
✦In order to print extended ASCII characters on the event
printer, a Windows 98 workstation must load an ANSI driver
from the CONFIG.SYS file. This driver is typically included

Before You Begin Installation Requirements
I/NET 2000 Getting Started 1-3
within the Windows “Command” directory or within the
system’s “DOS” directory.
Example CONFIG.SYS entry:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ANSI.SYS
(A Windows NT workstation does not require this driver.)
Please contact your network system administrator if you have any
questions on these requirements.
Installation Requirements
The I/NET 2000 software requires approximately 35 MB of hard
disk space. Make sure you have enough space before you install
I/NET. You will need to allocate additional hard drive space for data
files.
Before beginning the installation procedures, it is important to
consider the following:
✦Determine whether you will use synchronous or asynchro-
nous communication. Setup’s Typical option (the default)
installs asynchronous BIN files. You should choose the
Synchronous option to install synchronous BIN files. You
may switch from synchronous to asynchronous, or vice versa,
at a later date by choosing the Custom option and then
selecting the appropriate controller binary files. Instructions
are provided in Chapter 2, Installing I/NET.
Note: Refer to the Communication chapter in TCON237, I/NET 2000
Technical Reference Guide for information on synchronous versus
asynchronous communication.
✦If you want to use an Ethernet LAN, make sure you have a
valid LAN connection. Refer to “Workstation Requirements”
for the definition of a valid LAN connection.

Upgrading Previous Versions of I/NET Before You Begin
1-4 I/NET 2000 Getting Started
Upgrading Previous Versions of I/NET
If you are upgrading from I/NET 4.x or earlier, please refer to the
Upgrade file located on your I/NET 2000 CD-ROM for detailed
instructions. The information in this section is only applicable to
I/NET 2000 system upgrades.
Note: Before upgrading a Filemaster workstation to I/NET 2000 version 2.0
or later, ensure that the workstation is configured to use the Windows
NT 4.0 operating system with Service Pack 3 or later. The Windows
98 operating system is not supported for Filemaster workstations.
The data and AMT database files for version 2.0 are not compatible
with any previous version of I/NET. You must convert the data files
on each host workstation before running this version of I/NET
2000. Once the workstation is upgraded, do NOT run I/NET 2000,
Configure, or the IO Server until all host workstations that equalize
files have also been upgraded. A nonrecoverable data corruption
will occur if a workstation running version 2.0 or later attempts to
equalize or otherwise read any unconverted files.
Follow the steps below to upgrade an existing I/NET 2000 system:
1. Shutdown I/NET 2000 and/or Configure, if running.
2. If necessary, shutdown I/O server. (Depending on the
settings in your configuration profile, I/O server may shut
down automatically.)
Note: If your system configuration uses file equalization, it is important
that the I/O server be shut down, and remain shut down, until ALL
host machines have been upgraded and the appropriate files have
been converted to the new format.
3. Backup the files on your host workstation. The files recom-
mended for backup are listed in Tab le 1- 1.
4. Install I/NET 2000 using the installation instructions
detailed in Chapter 2, Installing I/NET. If possible, use the
default installation directory names.

5. I/NET 2000 supports asynchronous communication and the
.BIN files required for asynchronous files are installed under
the Typical option. If you are using synchronous modems,
as required by I/NET 4.x, select the Synchronous option.
6. Run the conversion programs as outlined in Chapter 3,
I/NET Conversions. Depending on your system configura-
tion, some conversion programs may launch automatically
during the upgrade installation process.
Caution: If your system uses file equalization, do NOT run the configuration
program until all host machines have been upgraded, and the files
have been converted to the new format. An unrecoverable file corrup-
tion will occur if a system running version 2.0 or later of I/NET 2000
attempts to read or otherwise access files from an earlier version.
7. Complete the I/NET 2000 configuration process as detailed
in Chapter 4, I/NET Configuration.
