Introduction
The sun’s UV rays can penetrate your skin and
cause damage such as freckles, skin aging, liver
spots, cataracts, sunburn, and skin cancer. Knowing
the strength of these rays allows you to take the
necessary steps to help avoid skin damage from UV
exposure. UV-Smart measures UVA and UVB indi-
vidually, giving you a more complete picture of your
UV exposure risk.
What is UV?
UV stands for ultraviolet, and in this case, is used
in reference to the ultraviolet radiation waves that are
emitted from the sun. UV is invisible and cannot be
detected by the eye.
The two most prevalent types are UVA and UVB. UVA
is linked to accelerated skin aging, liver spots and
freckles. UVB causes the familiar sunburn and is
also related to skin cancer and cataracts. UV levels
change depending on the season, weather, time of
day, altitude and light reflection from land—poten-
tially putting your skin at risk year round. UV-Smart
measures the amount of UVA and UVB exposure
immediately and monitors changes in UV as they occur.
UV-Smart measures the amount of UVA/B in your
vicinity in W/m2, or watts per square meter, which is
how light is commonly measured. UV-Smart classifies
both UVA and UVB results into four levels: weak,
medium, strong and very strong. These levels are
based on the numeric results, which are shown on
the display with a corresponding graphic symbol.

Setting the Clock
Press the release button to open the cover. Use the
H (hour) and M (minute) buttons, set the clock. Press
H once and “12”will start blinking. Press H button
repeatedly (or hold to scroll

Press M button repeatedly to find minutes (or hold to

reading appears, press Mode button to set time.
To Obtain Readings
Open the cover of UV-Smart and hold the unit with the
sensors facing towards the sun. Be sure the sensors
are clean and unobstructed (ensure that they are not
blocked by your fingers or your
shadow, and that they are free
from lint, grit, grease, etc.).
Press the Mode button repeat-
edly to scroll through the
clock, UVA or UVB modes.
When in UVA or UVB mode, the display will show the
number and icon that corresponds to each reading.

Checking UVA
Open cover and press the Mode button until the
display indicates the UVA mode. Angle the sensor
toward the sun. (UV reading may fluctuate depending
on angle of the sensor.)
UV-Smart will show you the
highest reading in two ways—
a numerical reading (in W/m2) and a corresponding
symbol that categorizes the reading as weak, medium,
strong, or very strong (see Symbol Definitions).
Checking UVB
Open cover and press the Mode button until the
display indicates the UVB mode. Angle the sensor
toward the sun. (UV reading may fluctuate depending
on angle of the sensor.)
UV-Smart will show you the
highest reading in two ways—
a numerical reading (in W/m2) and a corresponding
symbol that categorizes the reading as weak, medium,
strong, or very strong (see Symbol Definitions).

Symbol Definitions
Weak: Exposure to UVA/B rays is minimal and
least harmful, but some protection is still neces-
sary. Most people can stay in the sun during
peak hours (10 am–4 pm) up to an hour.
Medium: Low risk of harm from exposure. Fair
skin might burn in less than 20 minutes. Use a
sunscreen with a minimum of Sun Protection
Factor (SPF) 15, cover exposed skin, and wear a
hat and sunglasses.
Strong: High risk of harm. Fair skin may burn
in less than 10 minutes. Use minimum SPF 15
sunscreen cover exposed skin, wear a hat and
sunglasses, and seek shade when outside.
Very Strong: UVA/B rays are most damaging at
this level. Fair skin may burn in less than 5 min-
utes. Avoid going outside between peak hours
(10 am–4 pm) if possible. If you are outside, try
to avoid direct sunlight, use minimum SPF 15,
cover exposed skin, wear a hat and sunglasses,
and seek shade.

Calibration Check
To make sure the UV-Smart is calibrated correctly, you
may perform the following procedure from time to time:
1. Place the UV-Smart in a shaded area or in a place out
of direct sunlight.
2. Press the Mode button to take a reading.
3. UV-Smart should read “0”for UVA and “0.0”for UVB.
If the UV-Smart does not read “0”for UVA and “0.0”for
UVB, reset the unit as follows:
Resetting the Unit
1. Place UV-Smart in a shaded area
2. Press the Mode button 1 time.
3. Press and hold the “H”button for more than
2 seconds.
All symbols will appear on the display, then disappear.
UV-Smart has been reset and is ready for use.
Replacing the Battery
If batteries are low, the display will show “Lo.”
Replace with new batteries. Remove the battery cover.
Replace old battery with new one. Insert battery
positive (+) side up (facing you). Slide the cover back
into place. After batteries are inserted, the display will
show 12:00 am (you will need to reset the clock).

Important Notes
•The unit should be closed when replacing
batteries.
•If you do not intend to use the product for a long
period of time, it is recommended to remove the
batteries.
•Store batteries out of reach from children, in a
temperate place free of excessive humidity.
•Do not apply pressure or subject the unit
to vibration.
•Clean occasionally by wiping with a soft
dry cloth.
•Do not use any liquids when cleaning the unit
(water, benzene, thinner, etc.).
•Do not disassemble or wash the unit.
About Sunburn
Erythema, reddening of the skin, commonly known
as sunburn, occurs when your skin has been
exposed to too much UV. While attributed to UVB,
UVA also plays a role in causing sunburn. Your risk
of skin cancer grows with every sunburn you get.
Sunburn is not connected with the sensation of heat.
You can feel heat but incur no damage when sitting
inside a UV absorbing window pane. Or you can have
UV related skin damage on cold, cloudy days without
any heat sensation. So although you may not see the
sun or feel the heat, you are still at risk. UV exposure
increases at higher altitudes, is substantially greater
during the summer months in temperate climates,

and is higher overall in tropical climates. Sunburn
is best prevented by avoiding exposure during the
periods of highest UVB intensity, generally between
10 am and 2 pm.
Protecting Your Skin
The majority of UV damage may occur before the age
of 20. Protecting the skin in the first 18–20 years of
life can reduce the risk of skin cancer by more than
50%.* However, because the effects of UV damage
are cumulative, it is important to continue to protect
yourself from harmful UV rays even after the age of
20. Start by checking the UV level before leaving your
house. You can protect your skin by applying sun-
screen or foundation with an appropriate SPF (Sun
Protection Factor). SPF protects your skin from UVB
rays. Refer to the sunscreen manuals included with
the product to find out more about SPF values (i.e.
products with a higher SPF value will protect you
from UVB rays for a longer time), and for instructions
on how often to reapply it to your skin. Also, wearing
tightly woven clothing, hats, and sunglasses can also
help protect your skin from UV rays.
Note: Consult your physician about appropriate
precaution for sun exposure. Always use
common sense.
