AC POWER SOURCE AND CONNECTION
This instrument operates from a single-phase power source and has a three-wire power cord with a two-
pole, three-terminal grounding-type connector. The voltage to ground (earth) from either pole of the power
source must not exceed the maximum rated operating voltage, 250 volts.
Before ma ing connection to the power source, a qualified service person should verify that the instrument is
set to match the voltage of the power source and has a suitable two-pole, three-terminal grounding-type
connector.
GROUNDING THE INSTRUMENT
This instrument is safety class 1 equipment (IEC* designation). Safety class 1 equipment has a 3-wire power
cord with a 3-contact plug for connection to the power source and to protective ground. The plug protective-
ground contact connects (through the cord protective-grounding conductor) to the accessible meta! parts of
the equipment. For electric-shoc protection, insert this plug into a soc et outlet that has a securely grounded
protective-ground contact.
For medical-dental applications (to assure grounding integrity) the hospital-grade input plug must be inserted
only into a mating hospital-grade receptacle with a grounding contact.
To confirm that the soc et-outlet ground contact is securely grounded, refer to qualified service personnel.

MEDICAL-DENTAL APPLICATIONS
Do not use the VIDEO INPUTS for direct patient connection. Signal currents at these connectors, as well as
lea age currents, may exceed values considered non-hazardous for direct patient connection.
Although this instrument is not to be used for direct patient connection, interconnecting this Monitor with
other equipment can result in application of excessive current to the patient. It is extremely important that
the equipment be interconnected in accordance with NFPA 76B-T, Tentative Standard for the Safe Use of
Electricity in Patient Care Areas of Health Care Facilities, section 3038, "Signal Transmission Between
Appliances". Also refer to NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, paragraphs 517-120 through 517-122.
Do not operate this instrument in the presence of flammable gases or anesthetics. Explosion can result from
operation in such an environment.
USE THE PROPER FUSE
Refer fuse replacement to qualified service personnel only. To avoid electric shoc and fire hazard, use only
the fuse specified in the parts list for your instrument and which is identical in the following respects.
A. Type — Slow blow, fast blow, etc.
B. Voltage rating — 250 V, etc.
C. Current rating.
DO NOT REMOVE PROTECTIVE COVERS
High-voltage is present inside the instrument. To avoid electric shoc , operating personnel must not remove
protective covers. Component replacement and internal adjustments must be made by qualified service
personnel only.
LIMIT INPUT SIGNAL VOLTAGE
To avoid electric-shoc hazard and to protect the instrument, do not apply input signals of greater than 5 volts
(dc + pea ac).
PREVENT IMAGE BURN-IN ON CRT PHOSPHOR
To avoid damaging the c rt phosphor, do not allow a stationary bright image to remain on the screen any
longer than necessary.

634 MONITOR (OPTION 23) FEATURES
The 634 Monitor utilizes m gnetic deflection r ster sc n to provide 9 x 12 video displ y re on the crt. The 634 is well
suited for m ny displ y pplic tions in ultr sonic detection systems, electron microscope systems, r di tion nd therm l
sc nning systems, speech ther py, mech nic l pressure, volume nd vibr tion n lysis, nd medic l biophysic l
systems. The 634 m y lso be used to provide video displ ys of lph -numeric nd gr phic inform tion from
me surement systems, computers, nd other d t -tr nsmission systems. The re r p nel VIDEO INPUT connectors
provide me ns to oper te sever l 634 Monitors from single video source.
The extern l physic l dimensions of the 634 Monitor lends itself to e sy r ckmounting to dj cent equipment.

Section 1 — 634 Oper tors
GENERAL INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
The Oper tors M nu l cont ins inform tion necess ry to
effectively oper te the 634 Monitor nd is divided into
three sections: Section 1 provides p ck ging for
shipment inform tion, specific tions, nd list of
st nd rd ccessories. Section 2 cont ins oper ting
inform tion. Inform tion concerning v il ble options for
the 634 Monitor is loc ted in section 3.
WARNING
The Instruction M nu l cont ins ten sections. Oper ting
inform tion is covered in the first two sections, servicing
inform tion is covered in the rem ining eight sections.

INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTION
The 634 Monitor is comp ct, solid-st te instrument
with excellent resolution, providing video displ y of
inform tion input to the VIDEO INPUT connectors on the
re r p nel.
High voltage is present inside the instrument.
To avoid electric shoc , operating personnel
must not remove the protective covers.
Component replacement and interna!
adjustments must be made by qualified
service personnel only.
Video sign ls connected to the VIDEO INPUT connector
re mplified by the Input nd Video Output Amplifiers to
drive the crt control grid.
The Input Amplifier lso supplies synchroniz tion
sign l to the Vertic l nd Horizont l R mp Gener tors.
The vertic l nd horizont l r mps re then geometric lly
sh ped nd mplified to drive the electrom gnetic
deflection yokes.
Sign l s mples from the Vertic l R mp Gener tor nd
Horizont l Yoke Driver provide retr ce bl nking to the crt
c thode. Screen bl nking c n be chieved by supplying
zero input level to the re r-p nel TTL BLANKING
connector.
The Dyn mic Focus circuit provides focus correction for
the displ y when the crt be m is deflected from crt
center. Thus, by v rying the volt ge to the crt focus
element, the Dyn mic Focus Circuit compens tes for
geometric defocusing.
The High-Volt ge nd Low-Volt ge Power Supplies
provide ll the volt ges necess ry for oper tion of this
instrument.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE
CONSIDERATIONS
This instrument c n be oper ted where the mbient ir
temper ture is between 0° nd +50° C (+32° nd +122°
F), nd c n be stored in mbient temper tures between
-40° nd +70° C (-40° nd +1 58° F). After being stored in
temper tures beyond the bove oper ting limits, llow
the ch ssis temper ture to return to within the oper ting
limits before pplying power. Allowing the Monitor to
oper te t n mbient temper ture subst nti lly higher
th n th t specified m y result in poor reli bility s well
s in ccur te perform nce.
When the 634 is mounted in r ck with other
equipment, it is import nt th t the mbient temper ture
surrounding the Monitor does not exceed +50° C (+122°
F). Addition l cle r nce for convection, or forced
ventil tion methods (f n), m y be needed to m int in
mbient temper tures below +50° C (+122° F). Reli bility
nd perform nce of the 634 will be ffected if the
ventil tion holes in the protective p nels re obstructed,
or if the 634 is oper ted t n mbient temper ture
higher th n +50° C (+122° F). Other environments nd
mounting configur tions m y require ddition l cooling
me sures.
CONTROLS AND CONNECTORS
Controls nd connectors necess ry for oper tion of the
634 Monitor re loc ted on the front nd re r p nels of
the instrument. To m ke full use of the c p bilities of this
instrument, the oper tor should be f mili r with the
function nd use of e ch extern l control nd connector.
The front-p nel controls re shown nd described in
Figure 2-1. Brief descriptions of the st nd rd re r-p nel
controls nd connectors re given in Figure 2-2. The
Option 20 re r p nel is illustr ted in Figure 2-3.
INPUT SIGNAL REQUIREMENTS
The 634 Monitor requires neg tive sync-tip video input
sign l for proper oper tion. The input sign l mplitude
r nge should not exceed 0.35 to 2 volts pe k-to-pe k for
norm l oper tion, or m ximum of 5 volts pe k.
OPERATORS CHECKOUT
PROCEDURE
The following procedure is provided to id in obt ining
displ y on the 634 Monitor nd m y be used s check
of b sic instrument oper tion. The procedure m y be
used for incoming inspection to verify proper oper tion,
nd m y lso be used by the oper tor for instrument
f mili riz tion. Only instrument functions, nd not
me surement qu ntities or specific tions, re checked in
this procedure. Therefore, minimum mount of test
equipment is required. If performing the Oper tors
Checkout Procedure reve ls improper perform nce or
instrument m lfunction, first check the oper tion of
ssoci ted equipment, then refer to qu lified service
personnel for rep ir or djustment of the instrument.
TEST EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
The following test equipment w s used s b sis to
write the Oper tors Checkout Procedure. Other test
equipment, which meets these requirements, m y be
substituted. When other equipment is substituted, the
control settings or set up m y need to be ltered.

PRELIMINARY SETUP
1. Connect the 634 Monitor power cord to suit ble
power source.
NOTE
Chec the line voltage information indicated
on the rear panel. If the source voltage is not
within this range, refer qualified service
personnel to the servicing information
sections of the 634 Instruction Manual.
2. Open the ccess door on the front p nel nd set the
controls s follows:

two BNC connectors will be properly termin ted when the 75 Q TERMINATION switch is in the ON position. Sever l
Monitors c n be oper ted from single video source by connecting them in series (utilizing the unused connector)
nd setting the 75 Q TERMINATION switch to the OFF position.

EXTERNAL-POWER INPUT CONNECTOR — Provides me ns to connect power to the Monitor from n extern l

Oper ting Instructions — 634 Oper tors
DISPLAY FUNCTIONS
1. Perform the bove Prelimin ry Set Up procedure.
2. Notice r ster will ppe r on the screen, incre sing in
brightness s you slowly turn the BRIGHTNESS control
clockwise.
A high brightness level combined with a
stationary image may damage the crt
phosphor. Therefore, set the BRIGHTNESS
control to the minimum necessary for good
visibility.
3. Connect the 1470 sign l gener tor to the lower VIDEO
INPUT connector on the re r p nel nd set the 75 Q
TERMINATION switch to ON. Set the 1470 for window
sign l output.
4. Adjust the FOCUS nd CONTRAST controls for
sh rp, well-defined displ y.
5. Set the re r-p nel 75 Q TERMINATION switch to OFF.
6. Notice th t the r ster b ckground level h s incre sed.
7. Set the 75 Q TERMINATION switch to ON.
8. Disconnect the 1470 sign l gener tor.
This completes the Oper tors Checkout Procedure for the
634 Monitor.
