Notes on using the test generator
If the display is not functioning
■
Both POWER and SELECT indicators should be on, indicating the ready
state.
■
When using the generator for enabling or disabling the startup page,
the
SELECT indicator blinks for 45 seconds, then stays on.
If the display is functioning
■
Both POWER and SELECT indicators should be on, indicating the ready
state.
■
The display should indicate: ready .
■
When using the generator for enabling or disabling the startup page,
the
SELECT indicator blinks for 45 seconds, then stays on. During this
45 second period, the display alternates between
processing data
and
parallel , then it indicates ready .
Note Do not use the test generator for making test prints. Use it only for
enabling and disabling the startup page.
Entering Factory Mode
1. Turn the printer off and unplug the power cord.
2. Hold down the front panel POWER button and right ( ⇒ ) arrow key at
the same time.
3. While holding down the POWER button and right ( ⇒ ) arrow key, plug
in the printer. The printer produces an audible tone three times; be
sure to continue holding both keys down until the tones stop. When
the printer is in factory mode, the
SELECT and ERROR indicators may
blink.

Troubleshooting in Factory Mode
Selecting tests
In Factory Mode, you can choose from 32 tests. You can only run one test each
time you enter Factory Mode. To leave Factory Mode without executing any
test, press the
POWER button to turn off the printer.
There is no visual indication of what test has been selected. Each time you press
a key or button to step through the tests, the printer produces an audible tone;
count the tones to determine what test you are on.
1. Press the right arrow key to step through the tests. To step back
through the tests, press the
POWER button while holding down the
right (
⇒ ) arrow key.
2. Count the tones to determine what test you are on; press the POWER
button to select the test. The printer produces a different audible tone
to confirm the selection.
3. If the test has a sub-menu, press the POWER button to enter the
sub-menu. Press the right (
⇒ ) arrow key to step through the
sub-menu items. Again, the printer produces audible tones as you
step through each test; count the tones to determine what test you
are on. Press the
POWER button to enter the sub-menu test.

ejects paper. Repeats continuously.
15 Head Life Test (Black) Executes life test of Black head.
16 Head Life Test (Cyan) Executes life test of Cyan head.

17 Head Life Test (Magenta) Executes life test of Magenta head.
18 Head Life Test (Yellow) Executes life test ofYellow head.
19 Dump Print Changes print test to dump print.
20 Service Information Print Prints ROM version, number of pages, and
number of head replacements.
21 ROM Information Print Prints ROM version, FONT version, and
version of each module.
22 Bi-directional Registration
Setting Sets the adjustment value for bi-directional registration. Sub-menus select the type of
pattern (-14 through +14). These are the
same patterns as for test number 6, but in
number 6 they are printed immediately upon
entering the test. In this test, you must select
a test from the sub-menu to get a print.
23 – 31 Undefined Turns Soft Power off. No test is registered.

Front panel service codes
Defective printers often report service error codes on the front panel display.
The format for these codes is:
service call: xx
where xx indicates a two-digit error code. Refer to the following table for
explanations of these codes. The Canon BJC-600 service manual referred to in
the table is Canon part number QY8-1334-000. The page numbers in the table
refer to Rev. 0 of the manual (dated 1993).
