ordertobenefitfromalladvantagesandpossibilitiesofferedandpreventunnecessarydamage,
carefullyreadthismanualandfollowinformationcomprised.
Themanufacturerwillnotbeliablefordamagecausedbyfailuretofollowtheseinstructions,misuse
orabuseoftheequipment,oranypartthereof,negligence,accidentfireorforceoftheelements.

Theevaluationofthemeasuringresultsdependsonmaterialandsubsoil.Itisalways
requiredtodetermineonatrialbasiscorrelationvaluestothedomestictestmethodforthe
pre‐existinggroundorgroundintendedforbackfilling.Thewatercontentofthesoilmustnot
varywidely.Homogenoussoilisaprerequisitetoobtainacorrelationbetweenthe
measuringmethods.

AccordingtoASTME2583,thelightweightdeflecometermustbecalibratedatleastoncea
year.Testresultsofadevicethathasnotbeencalibratedorofadevicewithexpired

calibrationdatemustnotbeusedforevaluationofthebearingcapacityofsoilorrock.
Prescribedcalibrationintervalsmustbeobserved.
WARNING
Thelightweightdeflectometer„TERRATEST9000LWD“shouldneverbeplacednearany
inflammableliquidssuchasalcohol,thinneretc.Thereisariskoffireifsuchinflammable
liquidsmakecontactwiththeelectriccomponentsintheinteriorofthedevice.

Neverplaceorchargetheinstrumentinareaswithexcessivehumidity,hightemperatures,

1.3.2 MainsPowerSupply
ATTENTION
Inordertochargetheelectronicsofthelightweightdeflectometer,thepowerpack
(SYS1308‐1809‐W2E)withLEMOplugshouldexclusivelybeused.Thechargingprocedureon
thebasisofthispowerpackshouldbeperformedindryindoorlocations.Theinnerpoleis
thepositive(+)pole.
1.4 SAFETYPRECAUTIONSDURINGOPERATION

TERRATESTLWDGmbHshallnotbeliableforanydamage,consequentialdamageorfinancial
lossthatoccursasaresultofimproperuseand/orlackofprofessionalknowledgewhen
evaluatingthetestdata.Itisessentialtoensurethatthecalibrationisuptodateandthatthe
deviceisoperatedinaccordancewiththeinstructionsofthisdocumentandlocalstandards.

andliftitonlyimmediatelybeforeperformingatest.Engageitatthetopintothereleasing

1.5 PACKAGING
Itisrecommendedtostorethepackagingofthedevicefortransportatalaterdate(e.g.for
calibration).Upondelivery,checkimmediatelythatallgoodsareundamagedandcomplete.Checkin
particularthatthereisnovisibleexternaldamagetothepackaging.Ifthedeviceoranyotheritem
includedinthedamageprovestobedamaged,immediatelyrecordthetypeofdamageandinform
thecarrier.TERRATESTLWDGmbHmustbeinformedaswell,sowecanenterintocommunication
withthecarrier.

The serial number of the instrument consists of a four-digit number, attached in the form of a sticker to
the cylinder of the central geophone. This sticker should never be removed or become unreadable. The
serial number of external geophones and measuring instrument is identical. Additionally, external
geophone 1 carries designation /G1, the second designation /G2.

3.7 CHARGINGPROCEDURE
Onlythechargingequipmentsuppliedbythemanufacturer
shouldbeusedforcharging.Plugthepowercableintothe
socketlabelledwith„Charger9V/max1,25A“ofthe
electronics,whichislocatedbelowtheSTARTbutton.The
chargingproceduretakesca.4‐5hdependingonambient
temperature.Inthecaseofexhaustivedischarge,the
batterymustbechargedforca.18hours.Maximum
fluctuationinvoltagemustnotexceed10%.Duringthe
chargingprocess,placetheinstrumentinadryroomand
takecarethatitispossibletodisconnectthepowerpack
frompoweratanytime.

Forthatpurpose,onlythepowerpack(SYS1308‐1809‐W2E)
withLEMOplug,approvedbythemanufacturer,shouldbe
used.
Thechargingprocedureonthebasisofthispowerpack

resultindamagetothewires.
ThechargingcableisequippedwithaplugwithLEMO„PUSHPULL“lockandanti‐kinkprotection.To
connectthecable,firstopenthehingedlidofthesocket,andinserttheplugcarefullyuntilstop.The
plugautomaticallylocksinsidethesocket,fordetachingitmustbeunlocked.Grasponlyfromthe
plugitself,otherwisecableandsocketmaybedamaged.
ATTENTION:
Inthecourseofthechargingprocedure,nomeasurementsshouldtakeplace,asnoreliable
resultscanbeexpected.

3.8 EXCHANGEOFBATTERY
Batteryexchangeisreservedtoqualifiedpersonnel.
ThebatteryshouldonlybereplacedbytheoriginalmodeltypeSonyUS18650VTC6,3.6Volt,3.12Ah.
Procedure:
1. TheelectronicsmustbeswitchedOFFbeforehand.
2. UseanAllenkey2.5mmtodetachthe4hexagonsocket
screwsofthecaseplateoftheelectronicsbyturning
counterclockwise.
3. Carefullyremovethecoverplateoftheelectronics.The
circumferentialEMCgasketshouldnotbedamaged
meanwhile.
4. Removethebatteryandinsertthenewitem
(typeSonyUS18650VTC6,3.6Volt,3.12Ah).Correct
polaritymustbeobserved!
5. Securethebatterybyattachingastripofhotglue.
ATTENTION:
Neverattempttoopenthebattery.Improperhandlingorshortcircuitmaygiverisetofire
hazard.
Lithiumisahighlyreactivelightmetal,sothatcorrespondingdirectivesfortransportand
disposalmustbeobserved.Alsoforthisreason,theinstrumentorthebatteryitselfshould
neverbelefttopersonsunawareofpossibledanger.

whichthegroundissubjectedonanimpactload(Fmax).Thisimpactloadisgeneratedbyaweight
fallingontoaloadplatewithdefineddiameter.Theparameterforthedeformabilityofthesoilunder
thisdefinedverticalimpactloadisthesocalledEmodvalue.
Toensurehomogenousandrepeatableresultsitisrecommendedtoestablishgeneralprocedures
anddirectivesbeforeperformingtests.TheDanishinstituteforroadconstructiondefinedintheyear
of2006guidelinesfortest,analysisandreportintheformofan“approachforapreliminarytest
method”,summarizedinthefollowing.
Inordertoestimatelayerthicknessanddeterminenon‐linearity,eachtestingpointshouldbe

Beforereleasingthefallingweight,thegeophonemustbecenteredagain.Forthatpurposeunlock
thetransportsecurity,pullitup,putitdownagainandreinsertthelockofthetransportsecurityin
lowestposition.Verifythevaluesstoredinthesmartphone‐App„TERRATEST9000LWD“,particularly
withrespecttotheplateradius.
Betweenthetests,contaminationofthedevicemustberemovedtoensureaccurateresults.
Onverycohesiveormoistenedsubsoil,performmeasurementwithoutmakinguseofthetappetof
thecentralgeophone.Toachievethis,fixthecentralgeophonebymeansofthetransportsecurityin
lowestposition,andboltthecoverscrewfrombelowintothegeophone.
4.4 SCOPEOFAPPLICATION
Thedynamicloadplatetestwithlightweightdeflectometerissuitablefortestingthebearing
capacityandassessingthecompactionqualityofunboundorpartiallyboundsoilforearthworksand
roadconstruction.‘Soil’shouldbeunderstoodasincludingbackfillmaterials,basecourseswithout
binders,soilimprovements,coldrecyclinglayers,mineralsealinglayers,asphaltandnotyetcured
concrete.Thetestingmethodisespeciallysuitableforcoarse‐grainedandmixed‐grainedsoilswitha
maximumgrainsizeof63mm.
4.5 CALIBRATION
„TERRATEST9000LWD“beforedeliveryiscalibratedacc.tomanufacturerspecification.Duringthis
procedure,allcomponentsareattunedspecificallytooneanother.Aftercompletion,respective
calibrationtagswiththeexpirydateareattachedtothecentralgeophonebetweentransport
securityandelectronics.Acalibrationcertificateisprovidedaswell.Atleastonceperyear,
recalibrationbyTERRATESTLWDGmbHisrequired.Testresultsofadevicethathasnotbeen
calibratedorofadevicewithexpiredcalibrationdatemustnotbeusedforevaluationofthebearing
capacityofsoilorrock.Prescribedcalibrationintervalsthereforemustbeobserved.
4.6 RULESFORPROPERUSE
1. Removeanyexistingloosematerialfromthetestarea;createasmoothandlevelsurfaceon
whichtoplacetheloadplate.Ensurefullandevencontactbetweenloadplateandground.
Inthecaseofsoilirregularities,spreadathinlayerofsandonthesurfaceandreducethe
thicknessofthelayerbymovingtheplatebackandforth.
2. Beforeeachmeasurement,thegeophonehastobecenteredagain,byshiftingupanddown
thetransportsecurity.
3. Atightconnectionoftheguiderodmustbeensured.Thereforebetweenthemeasurements,
repeatedlycheckitsscrewing.
4. Graspcablesfromtheplug.Pullingthecableitselfmayresultindamagetothewires.
5. Beforeeachtest,makesurethatthebottomsideoftheplateisclean,andremoveadhering
coarsematerial.
6. Thegrainsizeofthematerialtobeinspectedislimitedtomax.63mm.
