Tidland 900 KA Series Manual

Series 900 KA Shaft
Operation & Maintenance Manual
Operation
§Keep the Series 900 KA Shaft clean and dry.
§Make sure that there are no scratches or burrs on the shaft body.
§Tidland Slitter Shafts are designed for holding anvil blades in place during
slitting operations. Check your PSDS, Product Safety Data Sheet to confirm
your shaft's design parameters.
To inflate shaft:
Caution! Do not inflate while the shaft is spinning.
1. Position anvil blades.
2. Connect air hose to a convenient dry air source.
3. Use the Tidland inflation tool.
4. Push the air nozzle firmly into the valve receiver.
5. Inflate the shaft until the air gauge indicator registers
a minimum of 80psi (5.4 bar). Do not exceed the
maximum air pressure of 120psi (8.3 bar).
Note: Keeping the shaft pressure above 80psi (5.4 bar)
will ensure optimum safety and performance.
To deflate shaft:
Caution! Only use the air release tool. Do not deflate while the shaft is spinning.
1. Using air release tool, push in the quick release air valve.
2. Position the anvil blades.
Note: Optional rotary union air connections should be controlled
by valves (not supplied).

Maintenance
§Keep the Series 900 KA Shaft clean and dry.
§Make sure that there are no scratches or burrs on the shaft body.
To Remove the Internal Bladder Assembly from the Shaft:
1. Release all air from shaft and disconnect air supply.
2. Remove the bolts from the valve journal.
3. Remove the valve from the air valve end of the shaft.
Note: Mark journal and shaft for alignment during reassembly.
4. Alternately tighten the bolts into the jacking threads.
5. Valve journal will slide out as the bolts are tightened.
6. Remove journal.
Note: Due to the retraction of the internal leaves, the external leaf may need to be held
in the expanded position for ease of removal of the internal bladder.
a. Remove a few button head cap screws from the external leaves.
b. Form a bridge across the leaf to allow tightening of the bolt to lift the leaf enough to allow
clearance.
c. Make sure that the shaft surface is not scratched or damaged.
d. This may need to be completed in several places.
7. Disconnect the bladder assembly from the valve journal.
8. Pull the bladder assembly out of the shaft.
Note: Inspect the inside of the shaft for debris. Blow out with clean, dry air if
necessary. Check for burred edges and remove if applicable.
To Replace the Internal Bladder:
1. Remove the jam nuts, one per end.
2. Remove the end caps, one per end.
3. Pull the tube fittings out of the bladder. There is one valve fitting and one non-valve fitting.
4. Cut the new bladder to length with the removed bladder as reference.
5. Insert the tube fittings into the bladder ends until the bladder is just over the tube fitting
threads.
6. Add the end caps to both ends.
7. Secure the end caps with the jam nuts.
3
To Replace the O-rings on the O-ring Connector:
1. Locate the O-ring connector inside the valve journal.
2. Using a deep-well socket, remove the O-ring connector.
3. Remove the used O-rings (2).
4. Place new O-rings (2) on the O-ring connector.
5. Add a light layer of non-curing sealant to the O-ring connector threads.
6. Insert the O-ring connector into the valve journal.
7. Tighten using a deep-well socket.
To Install the Internal Bladder Assembly into the Shaft:
Note: Due to the retraction of the internal leaves, the external leaf may need to be held
in the expanded position for ease of installation of the internal bladder.
a. Remove a few button head cap screws from the external leaves.
b. Form a bridge across the leaf to allow tightening of the bolt to lift the leaf enough to allow
clearance.
c. Make sure that the bolt slots are not scratched or damaged.
d. This may need to be completed in several places.
1. Slide the non-valve end of the bladder assembly back into the shaft body.
2. Push the valve end of the bladder assembly into the valve journal.
3. Place the valve journal in the shaft.
4. Loosen and remove the bolts from the jacking threads.
5. Replace the bolts in the tapped holes in the shaft body.
6. Tighten the bolts to secure the valve journal.
7. Remove all items used in the bridge across the leaf to hold the leaves expanded.
8. Apply a locking compound to the button head cap screw threads.
9. Replace all the button head cap screws that connect the external leaves to the internal
leaves.
10. Inflate the shaft and check for leaks.
11. Replace the air valve.
