1 Introduction
1.1 Overview
This user manual describes the features and functionalities of the Pro Spectrum eye tracker. The Pro Spectrum can be used in
various setups, either with an attached monitor or as s standalone unit, to perform eye trackin with physical objects. The typical
setup is havin the Pro Spectrum connected to a PC runnin Pro Lab, see the ima e below.
The desi n enables the subject to move naturally durin recordin while still achievin hi h accuracy and precision.
1.2 Basic operating principles
The Pro Spectrum use infrared illuminators to enerate reflection patterns on the corneas of the subject’s eyes. These patterns,
plus other visual data about the subject, are collected by ima e sensors. Sophisticated ima e-processin al orithms identify
relevant features, includin the eyes and the corneal reflection patterns. Complex mathematics is used to calculate the 3D posi-
tion of each eyeball and the aze point on the screen (or when a screen isn’t used, for the aze point on the object); in plain
words, it tells you where the subject is lookin .
Eye trackers from Tobii Pro are desi ned for use in indoor office environments and for trackin on humans.
1.3 Product Versions
The Pro Spectrum is available in four product versions: 1200 Hz, 600 Hz, 300 Hz and 150 Hz. The values denote the eye track-
er’s maximum samplin frequency, but it can be used at lower settin s as well. The 600 Hz, 300 Hz and 150 Hz versions can
be up raded to a faster version. Contact your sales representative or Tobii Pro for more information.

3 Product Care
3.1 Transportation and storage
For transportation and stora e, the recommended ran e for temperature and humidity for the device is as follows:
•Temperature: -40°C to 70°C (-40°F to 158°F)
•Humidity: 20% to 95% (no condensation on the device)
The Pro Spectrum is not waterproof or water resistant. The device should not be kept in excessively humid, damp or
wet conditions. Do not submer e the device in water or in any other liquid. Be careful not to spill liquids on the
device.
3.2 Cleaning
Before cleanin the Pro Spectrum, unplu all cables. Use a soft, sli htly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid ettin moisture in openin s
on the device. Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean
the device.
Keep in mind that scratches on the front surface of the eye tracker may cause impaired eye trackin performance.
3.3 Transporting the Pro Spectru
Before stora e or shippin , disconnect all cables and use the travel case and packa in materials provided.
3.4 Disposing of the Pro Spectru
Do not dispose of Pro Spectrum in eneral household or office waste. Follow your local re ulations for disposal of electronic
equipment.

4 Setting up the Pro Spectru
4.1 Ventilation
As with most electronic devices, the Pro Spectrum enerates heat durin use and needs adequate ventilation. Allow for free air
flow around the unit and never cover it as this will restrict the air flow and lead to overheatin .
4.2 Testing Environ ent
The Pro Spectrum is best kept in dry conditions at room temperature. The recommended ran e for temperature and humidity
durin operation is as follows:
•Temperature: 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F)
•Humidity: Max 20% to 95% (no condensation on the device)
4.3 Mounting the onitor to the eye tracker unit
The Pro Spectrum is delivered with the monitor already mounted. If this for any reason is not the case, e. . someone has been
usin the unit as a standalone eye tracker, you need to reattach the monitor to the base. You mount and remove the monitor
swiftly thanks to its one-screw fastenin .
Procedure for affixin the mountin bracket:
1. Make sure the eye tracker is placed on an even and steady surface.
2. Hold the monitor firmly and insert the lower end of the mountin bracket into the slot on the top of the eye tracker.
3. When the lower end of the mountin bracket is fully inserted into the slot, ently tilt the screen forward.
4. When the mountin bracket is in place, secure it by pushin the lock knob downwards and turnin it until it is firmly in
place.

If you need to remove the monitor, repeat the above steps in the reverse order.
4.4 Connecting the eye tracker
The Pro Spectrum is connected to a standard Ethernet network with a RJ–45 connector.
Procedure for attachin the power supply:
1. Attach the supplied Ethernet cable to the correspondin Ethernet socket on the eye tracker.
2. Attach the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet socket on your PC. It is also possible to connect the eye track-
er to a switch connected to your LAN.
3. Attach the supplied power adapter cable to the correspondin outlet on the eye tracker.
a. Choose the power cable with the power plu suited for the electrical outlet and connect the other end to the AC
adapter.
b. If neither of the power plu s suits your needs, please contact your sales representative or Tobii Pro Support for
assistance.
c. Insert the power cable plu to a mains power outlet.
4.4.1 Powerin on the Pro Spectrum
The Pro Spectrum’s power switch is located on its back side. We recommend that you shut off the unit after the workday or for
lon er periods of inactivity.
Durin startup, the illuminators in the front of the Pro Spectrum, lit up one by one to indicate that the LED-hardware is OK.
Approximately 20 seconds after you power on, a short beep is heard, indicatin that the processor module has loaded the BIOS
and now be ins to load the operatin system.
After another 20 seconds two lon beeps are heard, indicatin that the system is ready for use.
If anythin oes wron (no matter the cause), you hear three short beeps about 40 to 50 seconds after the powerin -on se-
quence, followed by a short pause and then another three short beeps.

You turn off the eye tracker by pressin the power switch. Durin shut down, the power switch indicator lamp flashes. Depend-
in on the unit’s internal state, powerin down can take up to 20 seconds.
You force a shutdown of the Pro Spectrum by pressin the power switch for at least 5 seconds.
4.5 Monitor settings
The Pro Spectrum is supplied with a pre-mounted 23.8” monitor.
Note that the monitor has two power switches: one main power switch on the backside and one ON/OFF switch on
the front. Make sure the main switch is ON before startin the monitor with the ON/OFF switch.
1. Attach the supplied DisplayPort or HDMI cable to the correspondin connector on your computer.
It is possible to use any of the other display interfaces on the monitor as well. However, for the best perform-
ance we recommend DisplayPort or HDMI, dependin on what your PC is equipped for.
2. Choose the power cable with the plu suited for the wall outlet and connect the other end to the correspondin outlet
on the monitor.
3. Insert the power cable plu to a power outlet.
4. If neither of the plu s works with your power outlet, please contact your sales representative or Tobii Pro Support for
assistance.

5 Setup Options
1. The Pro Spectrum as delivered with the monitor mounted on the eye tracker
2. The Pro spectrum as a standalone eye tracker without monitor
3. Eye tracker and monitor to ether on a VESA 100x100 mount.
(Instructions of how to remove the stand and mount the eye tracker and monitor on the VESA mount are in the section
below.)
4. Standalone with monitor
You can use the eye tracker with another monitor, but that is not recommended (see Appendix B).

5.1 Mounting the Pro Spectru on a VESA ount (setup 3 in the i age
above)
The Pro Spectrum can be mounted on a standard VESA 100x100 mount. Proceed in the followin way:
1. Remove the stand by unscrewin the two screws from the underside (see ima e below).
2. Fold the two le s upwards so they lie neat a ainst the eye tracker’s side panels (as in setup 3 in the Setup Options-im-
a e above). Make sure they don’t cover the ventilation holes on the side panel.
3. Attach the VESA mount to the bracket with four screws.
5.2 Mounting a scene ca era
Beneath the eye tracker there is a mount used for attachin a scene camera (purchased separately).
Mountin procedure:
1. Attach the enclosed mountin bracket to your camera unit.
2. Slide the assembly into the scene camera mount and ti hten the screw.

6 Eye Tracker Configuration
6.1 Configuration and Pro Eye Tracker Manager
The Pro Spectrum is confi ured via Pro Eye Tracker Mana er (ETM); a confi uration and settin utility by Tobii Pro that is pro-
vided online free of char e. It enables you to confi ure different settin s for your connected eye trackers, such as samplin fre-
quency, stand-alone usa e and more. Pro Eye Tracker Mana er also enables you to up rade and down rade your eye tracker
firmware. Please see the documentation for the software you are usin for more information.

6.2 Updating the eye tracker’s fir ware
From time to time, Tobii Pro releases updates for the eye tracker firmware that improve its performance and/or introduce new
functionality. The latest firmware can be downloaded from the Tobii Pro Support website http://www.tobiipro.com/learn-and-
support. Make sure to re ularly check for and update to the latest version of the software and firmware.
Procedure for updatin the firmware:
1. Download the firmware update file from the above website and save it on your computer.
2. Start the Pro Eye Tracker Mana er on your computer. After a short network scannin period, available eye trackers will
show up in the “Connected Eye Trackers” pane.
3. Select the Pro Spectrum eye tracker for which you want to up rade the firmware. The “Eye Tracker Information” pane
displays information about the selected eye tracker.
4. If the stated firmware version is lower than the downloaded one, open the “Choose firmware update packa e” dialo by
clickin ‘Browse’.
5. Browse to the directory containin the file you downloaded in step 1.
6. Select the downloaded firmware file and click ‘Open’.
7. Durin the firmware update, a “Work in Pro ress” indicator appears in the “Eye Tracker Information” pane. Also, Pro
Spectrum may restart several times. This is not an error.
8. When the update is complete, the new firmware version is displayed in the eye tracker information. There is no need to
restart your Pro Spectrum.
You can down rade the firmware by resettin the eye tracker to factory defaults and then reinstallin the desired firm-
ware version:
1. Turn on the eye tracker and confirm that it appears in Pro Eye Tracker Mana er.
2. Restart Pro Spectrum by insertin a pointy device (i.e. a strai htened paper clip) into the recessed reset button
hole, located between the power connector and the data port on the connector panel at the back of the eye
tracker. Keep pressin the reset button till you hear a beep.
3. The Pro Spectrum eye tracker restarts one or more times. This is not an error. After a while, your eye tracker ap-
pears in Pro Eye Tracker Mana er a ain.
4. Install the desired firmware version accordin to the firmware up rade procedure outlined above.

6.3 Configuring the Pro Spectru in the Pro Eye Tracker Manager
In the Pro Eye Tracker Mana er you can chan e some settin s for your Pro Spectrum. For instance, you can create and recall
setups for usin the eye tracker in standalone mode and chan e the eye tracker’s frequency.
6.3.1 Chan in the Pro Spectrum's frequency settin
1. Start the Pro Eye Tracker Mana er. All available eye trackers appear in the “Connected Eye Trackers” pane.
2. Select the eye tracker whose frequency settin s you want to chan e.
3. The ri ht pane expands to show settin s for the eye tracker. Under “Tracker Specific Settin s,” you will see the name of
the eye tracker and the available frequencies.
4. Select the desired frequency settin .
Option with reduced infrared li ht: If you chan e the samplin frequency to 60 or 120 Hz, you reduce the bri htness
of the infrared li ht from the eye tracker. This is useful when you want a hi hly unobtrusive setup for the participant.
This low visibility option is only available for 60 and 120 Hz.
6.3.2 Confi urin the Pro Spectrum for standalone use
1. Start the Pro Eye Tracker Mana er on your computer. All available eye trackers appear in the “Connected Eye Trackers”
pane.
2. Select the eye tracker you want to confi ure for standalone use.
3. Under “Physical Eye Tracker Setup”, click on the drop down list called ‘Preset’ and select ‘Create new preset’. The win-
dow “Stimuli Area” appears.
4. Enter the required settin values for your confi uration and click on ‘Next’.
5. In the “‘Eye Tracker” window, set the eye tracker’s physical an le values and click on ‘Next’.
6. In the window “Name your settin ”, ive your new preset a name and press ‘Finish’.
7. The main window of Pro Eye Tracker Mana er appears with your new preset selected. If you want to o back to the
standard preset, select it in the drop down list box.

7 Specific Features
7.1 User Calibration for Pro Spectru
Pro Spectrum calibration procedure enables robust eye trackin research by facilitatin workflows that take into consideration
your research questions, as well as your participant’s characteristics. Pro Spectrum supports:
1. Binocular calibration
2. Monocular calibration:
a. Monocular calibration, only one eye
b. Monocular calibration, any or both eyes
7.1.1 Binocular calibration
The binocular calibration is successful if sufficient data ets collected to successfully calibrate both eyes. This is an efficient
and powerful method to calibrate your participant’s eyes, suitable for most research questions and for most participants.
Available in:
• Pro Eye Tracker Mana er, when selectin the Default calibration.
• Pro Lab, when selectin the Calibration stimuli in the Desi n Timeline.
• Pro SDK, when usin Screen based calibration class/methods.
General binocular calibration flow:
1. Start a calibration.
2. Collect data for a number of points for both eyes.
3. Calibration result for both eyes:
• Calibration succeeded: sufficient data has been collected for both eyes. Calibration results are presented on the
screen for all points that have successfully collected data for both eyes.
• Calibration failed: insufficient data has been collected for both eyes, You should restart the calibration procedure.
4. Improve a successful calibration by recalibratin the points with missin data for both eyes or where data is insufficient
for your research.
5. Accept calibration.
7.1.2 Monocular calibration
The monocular calibration functionality in Pro Spectrum enables you to collect eye-trackin data that is optimized for each of
the participant’s eyes. Pro Spectrum identifies the left and ri ht eyes, no matter whether only one or both eyes are visible to the
eye-trackin sensors. In some cases, you can increase confidence by coverin the untracked eye, but that is not required.
Use this functionality if one troublesome eye causes the binocular calibration process to fail, for example when the participant
suffers from severe strabismus, or when he has one prosthetic eye.
Separate eye calibration is also useful when researchin binocular coordination and fixation disparity, or in situations where you
want the calibration to pass even when only one eye is tracked.
A default calibration is used for the eye that was not selected for calibration or failed to calibrate. Durin the recordin ,
Pro Spectrum still searches for both eyes, thou h it is less likely to obtain data for the uncalibrated eye. Nevertheless,
Pro Spectrum reports data for the uncalibrated eye when it can do so.

There are two types of monocular calibration:

7.1.2.1 Monocular calibration: only one eye
This calibration functionality enables you to calibrate one of the participant’s eyes, while i norin the other.
Available in:
• Pro Eye Tracker Mana er when selectin the Monocular – left or Monocular - ri ht calibration.
• Pro SDK when usin Screen based Monocular calibration class/methods.
General Monocular Calibration flow for one eye:
1. Start a Monocular calibration for the eye of interest. Maskin the other eye is not necessary, enablin the participant to
et a natural viewin experience.
2. Collect data for a number of points for the eye of interest.
3. Calibration result for the eye of interest:
• Calibration succeeded: sufficient data has been collected for the eye of interest. Calibration results are presented
for the points that have successfully collected data for the eye of interest.
• Calibration failed: insufficient data has been collected. You should restart the calibration procedure.
4. Improve a successful calibration by recalibratin points with missin data for the eye of interest or where data is insuffi-
cient for your research.
5. Accept calibration.
7.1.2.2 Monocular calibration, any or both eyes
This calibration functionality provides better ranularity for your calibration results by tellin you whether the participant’s left,
ri ht or both eyes have been successfully calibrated for each point. Also, you can complete the calibration even when only one
eye has been successfully calibrated.
Each calibration performed will replace the previous calibration. This means that one cannot calibrate first the left eye, by per-
formin a Monocular-left calibration, and then the ri ht eye, by performin a Monocular-ri ht calibration, and expect to have cali-
bration for both left and ri ht eyes. In this case only the ri ht eye will be calibrated at the end.
Available in:
• Pro SDK when usin Screen based Monocular calibration class/methods.
General Monocular Calibration flow for any or both eyes:
1. Start a Monocular calibration for any or both eyes.
2. Collect data for a number of points for both eyes.
3. Calibration result for both eyes:
• Calibration succeeded: sufficient data has been collected for both eyes, or only for the left or for the ri ht eye. The
calibration results indicate the quality of the calibration for any of the points, for any of the eyes.
• Calibration failed: insufficient data has been collected. You should restart the calibration procedure.
4. Improve a successful calibration by recalibratin the points with missin data for any of the eye, or where data is insuffi-
cient for your research.
5. Accept calibration.
7.2 Using the TTL input port for external event recording
The Pro Spectrum is equipped with a di ital data input port that records events in up to ei ht parallel TTL si nals. The events
are recorded with a time-stamp accuracy better than 50 µs. The detected events are available in decimal format (0–255)
throu h either Pro Lab or the Pro SDK. The TTL si nal can be combined to obtain up to 256 different events.
Any di ital si nal source fulfillin the electrical specification can be connected to the tracker, for example the Cedrus
Stimtracker.

Connector shieldin : connected to system chassis round
Input confi uration: inputs (pin 1-8) are connected to pull up resistors and are opto-isolated.
7.3 Eye I ages
Eye ima es are available in 10Hz from the Spectrum eye tracker. Each eye trackin camera provides 5Hz ima e stream. Durin
trackin mode (i.e. when the eye tracker detects eyes), the ima e resolution is 496x175, except when for 1200 Hz when the
resolution is 384x105. Durin aze recovery (i.e. when the eye tracker doesn’t detect eyes), the ima e resolution is 640x512.
The eye ima es are accessed via Pro SDK. They are also visible in Eye Tracker Mana er.

A1 Eye tracking specifications
The characteristics of the aze data from an eye tracker are described in terms of accuracy and precision. Accuracy indicates
the an ular avera e distance from the actual aze point to the one measured by the eye tracker. Gaze precision indicates the
spatial variation between successive samples collected when the subject fixates at a specific point on a stimuli.
