Training
•Readtheoperator'smanualandothertrainingmaterial
carefully.Befamiliarwiththecontrols,safetysigns,and
theproperuseoftheequipment.
•Iftheoperatorormechaniccannotreadthelanguage
ofistheowner'sresponsibilitytoexplainthismaterial
tothem.
•Neverallowchildrenorpeopleunfamiliarwiththese
instructionstouseorservicethemachine.Local
regulationsmayrestricttheageoftheoperator.
•Neveroperatewhilepeople,especiallychildren,orpets
arenearby.
•Keepinmindthattheoperatororuserisresponsiblefor
accidentsorhazardsoccurringtootherpeopleortheir
property.
•Donotcarrypassengers.
•Alldriversandmechanicsshouldseekandobtain
professionalandpracticalinstruction.Theowneris
responsiblefortrainingtheusers.Suchinstructionshould

Preparation
•Whileoperating,alwayswearsubstantialfootwear,long
trousers,hardhat,safetyglasses,andearprotection.Long
hair,looseclothing,orjewelrymaygettangledinmoving
parts.Donotoperatetheequipmentwhenbarefootor
wearingopensandals.
•Warning—Fuelishighlyammable.Takethefollowing
precautions:
•Replacefaultymufers.
•Evaluatetheterraintodeterminewhataccessoriesand
attachmentsareneededtoproperlyandsafelyperform
thejob.Onlyuseaccessoriesandattachmentsapproved
bythemanufacturer.
•Checkthatoperator'spresencecontrols,safetyswitches
andshieldsareattachedandfunctioningproperly.Donot
operateunlesstheyarefunctioningproperly.
SafeHandlingofFuels
•Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamage,use
extremecareinhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely
ammableandthevaporsareexplosive.
•Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipes,andothersources
ofignition.
•Useonlyanapprovedfuelcontainer.
•Neverremovefuelcaporaddfuelwiththeengine
running.
•Allowenginetocoolbeforerefueling.
•Neverrefuelthemachineindoors.
•Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainerwherethereis
anopename,spark,orpilotlightsuchasonawater
heateroronotherappliances.
•Neverllcontainersinsideavehicleoronatruckor
trailerbedwithaplasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainerson
thegroundawayfromyourvehiclebeforelling.
•Removeequipmentfromthetruckortrailerandrefuelit
ontheground.Ifthisisnotpossible,thenrefuelsuch
equipmentwithaportablecontainer,ratherthanfroma
fueldispensernozzle.
•Keepthenozzleincontactwiththerimofthefueltank
orcontaineropeningatalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.
Donotuseanozzlelockopendevice.
•Iffuelisspilledonclothing,changeclothingimmediately.
•Neveroverllfueltank.Replacefuelcapandtighten
securely.

Donotrunengineindoorsorinanenclosedarea.
•Donotoperatetheengineinaconnedspacewhere
dangerouscarbonmonoxidefumescancollect.
•Operateonlyindaylightoringoodarticiallight.
•Beforeattemptingtostarttheengine,disengageall
attachments,shiftintoneutral,andengagetheparking
brake.
•Donotputhandsorfeetnearorunderrotatingparts.
•Usingthemachinedemandsattention.Topreventtipping
orlossofcontrol:
–Watchforholesorotherhiddenhazards.
–Usecautionwhenoperatingthemachineonasteep
slope.Reduceyourspeedwhenmakingsharpturns
orwhenturningonhillsides.
–Avoidsuddenstopsandstarts.Donotgofrom
reversetofullforwardwithoutrstcomingtoa
completestop.
–Beforebackingup,looktotherearandensurethat
nooneisbehindthemachine.
–Watchoutfortrafcwhennearofcrossingroads.
Alwaysyieldtherightofway.

•Stayalertforholesintheterrainandotherhiddenhazards.
•Usecarewhenpullingloadsorusingheavyequipment.
–Useonlyapprovedhitchpoints.
–Limitloadstothoseyoucansafelycontrol.
–Donotturnsharply.Usecarewhenreversing.
•Watchoutfortrafcwhencrossingornearroadways.

interlocksareattached,adjustedproperly,andfunctioning

–stoponlevelground;
–releasethetractionpedalandlowertheattachments;

–stoptheengineandremovethekey.
•Disengagedrivetoattachmentswhentransportingornot
inuse.
•Stoptheengineanddisengagedrivetoattachment
–beforerefuelling;
–beforechecking,cleaningorworkingonthemachine;
–afterstrikingaforeignobjectorifanabnormal
vibrationoccurs.Inspectthemachinefordamage
andmakerepairsbeforerestartingandoperatingthe
equipment.
•Reducethethrottlesettingduringenginerun-outand,if
theengineisprovidedwithashut-offvalve,turnthefuel
offattheconclusionofoperation.
•Lookbehindanddownbeforebackinguptobesureof
aclearpath.
•Slowdownandusecautionwhenmakingturnsand
crossingroadsandsidewalks.
•Donotoperatethemachineundertheinuenceof
alcoholordrugs.
•Lightningcancausesevereinjuryordeath.Iflightning
isseenorthunderisheardinthearea,donotoperate
themachine;seekshelter.
•Usecarewhenloadingorunloadingthemachineintoa
trailerortruck.
•Usecarewhenapproachingblindcorners,shrubs,trees,

MaintenanceandStorage
•Keepallnuts,boltsandscrewstighttobesurethe
equipmentisinsafeworkingcondition.
•Neverstoretheequipmentwithfuelinthetankinsidea
buildingwherefumesmayreachanopenameorspark.
•Allowtheenginetocoolbeforestoringinanyenclosure.
•Toreducetherehazard,keeptheengine,mufer,
batterycompartmentandfuelstorageareafreeofgrass,
leaves,orexcessivegrease.
•Keepallpartsingoodworkingconditionandallhardware
andhydraulicttingstightened.Replaceallwornor
damagedpartsanddecals.
•Ifthefueltankhastobedrained,dothisoutdoors.
•Becarefulduringadjustmentofthemachinetoprevent
entrapmentofthengersbetweenmovingpartsand
xedpartsofthemachine.
•Disengagedrives,lowertheattachment,setparkingbrake,
stopengineandremovekey.Waitforallmovementto
stopbeforeadjusting,cleaningorrepairing.
•Usejackstandstosupportcomponentswhenrequired.
•Carefullyreleasepressurefromcomponentswithstored
energy.
•Disconnectbatteryandremovesparkplugwirebefore
makinganyrepairs.Disconnectthenegativeterminal
rstandthepositivelast.Reconnectpositiverstand
negativelast.
•Keephandsandfeetawayfrommovingparts.Ifpossible,
donotmakeadjustmentswiththeenginerunning.
•Chargebatteriesinanopenwellventilatedarea,away
fromsparkandames.Unplugchargerbeforeconnecting

ordisconnectingfrombattery.Wearprotectiveclothing
anduseinsulatedtools.
•Makesureallhydrauliclineconnectorsaretightandall
hydraulichosesandlinesareingoodconditionbefore
applyingpressuretothesystem.
•Keepyourbodyandhandsawayfrompinholeleaksor
nozzlesthatejecthydraulicuidunderhighpressure.
Usepaperorcardboard,notyourhands,tosearchfor
leaks.Hydraulicuidescapingunderpressurecanhave
sufcientforcetopenetratetheskinandcauseserious
injury.Seekimmediatemedicalattentionifuidis
injectedintoskin.
•Beforedisconnectingorperforminganyworkon
thehydraulicsystem,allpressureinthesystemmust
berelievedbystoppingtheengineandloweringthe
attachmentstotheground.
•Checkallfuellinesfortightnessandwearonaregular
basis.Tightenorrepairthemasneeded.
•Iftheenginemustberunningtoperformamaintenance
adjustment,keephands,feet,clothing,andanypartsof
thebodyawayfromtheattachmentsandanymoving
parts,especiallythescreenatthesideoftheengine.Keep
everyoneaway.
•Toensuresafetyandaccuracy,haveanAuthorizedToro
Distributorcheckthemaximumenginespeedwitha
tachometer.
•Ifmajorrepairsareeverneededorifassistanceis
desired,contactanAuthorizedToroDistributor.Use
onlyToro-approvedattachmentsandreplacementparts.
Thewarrantymaybevoidedifusedwithunapproved
attachments.

TractionandStoppingPedal
Thetractionpedal(Figure7)has3functions:tomakethe
machinemoveforward,tomoveitbackward,andtostopthe
machine.Usingtheheelandtoeoftherightfoot,depressthe
topofthepedaltomoveforwardandthebottomofpedal
tomovebackwardortoassistinstoppingwhenmoving
forward(Figure8).Also,allowthepedaltomoveormove
ittotheneutralpositiontostopthemachine.Foroperator
comfort,donottherestheelofthefootonreversewhen
operatingforward.

Groundspeedisproportionatetohowthefartractionpedal
isdepressed.Formaximumgroundspeed,thepedalmust
befullydepressedwhilethethrottleisintheFastposition.
Togetmaximumpowerorwhenascendingahill,havethe
throttleintheFastpositionwhiledepressingthepedalslightly
tokeeptheengineRPMhigh.WhentheengineRPMbegins
todecrease,releasethepedalslightlytoallowtheRPMto
increase.
Important:Formaximumpullingpower,thethrottle
shouldbeintheFastpositionandthetractionpedaljust
barelydepressed.

Theengineisshippedwithoilinthecrankcase;however,the
oillevelmustbecheckedbeforeandaftertheengineisrst

Crankcasecapacityisapproximately1-3/4USquarts(1.66
l)withthelter.
Usehigh-qualityengineoilthatmeetsthefollowing
specications:
•APIClassicationLevelRequired:SJ,SK,SLorhigher.
•Preferredoil:SAE30(above40degreesF)

3.Pulloutthedipstick(Figure13)andwipeitwithaclean
rag.Insertthedipstickintothetubeandmakesurethat
itisseatedfully.Removethedipstickfromthetube
