TheWorkmanwasdesignedandtestedtooffersafeservice
whenoperatedandmaintainedproperly.Improperuseor
maintenanceofthemachinecanresultininjuryordeath.
Thisisaspecializedutilitymachinedesignedforoff–roaduse
only.Itsrideandhandlingwillhaveadifferentfeelthanwhat
driversexperiencewithpassengercarsortrucks.Sotaketime
tobecomefamiliarwithyourWorkman.
NotalloftheattachmentsthatadapttotheWorkmanare
coveredinthismanual.PleasereadthespecicOperator’s
Manualprovidedwitheachattachmentforadditionalsafety
instructions.
Toreducethepotentialforinjuryordeath,complywith
thefollowingsafetyinstructions:
Supervisor’sResponsibilities
•Makesureoperatorsarethoroughlytrainedandfamiliar
withtheOperator’sManualandalldecalsonthemachine.
•Besuretoestablishyourownspecialproceduresand
workrulesforunusualoperatingconditions(e.g.slopes
toosteepformachineoperation).Usethe3rdHigh
Lockoutswitchifhighspeedcouldresultinasafetyor
machineabusesituation.
BeforeOperating
•Operatethemachineonlyafterreadingandunderstanding
thecontentsofthismanual.
•Neverallowchildrentooperatethemachine.Never
allowadultstooperateitwithoutproperinstructions.
Onlytrainedandauthorizedpersonsshouldoperate
thismachine.Makesurealloperatorsarephysicallyand
mentallycapableofoperatingthemachine.
•Thismachineisdesignedtocarryonlyyou,the
operator,andonepassengerintheseatprovidedbythe
manufacturer.Nevercarryanyotherpassengersonthe
machine.
•Neveroperatethemachinewhenundertheinuence
ofdrugsoralcohol.
•Becomefamiliarwiththecontrolsandknowhowtostop
theenginequickly.
•Keepallshields,safetydevicesanddecalsinplace.Ifa
shield,safetydeviceordecalismalfunctioning,illegible,
ordamaged,repairorreplaceitbeforeoperatingthe
machine.
•Alwayswearsubstantialshoes.Donotoperatethe
machinewhilewearingsandals,tennisshoes,orsneakers.
Donotwearloosettingclothingorjewelrywhichcould
getcaughtinmovingpartsandcausepersonalinjury.
•Wearingsafetyglasses,safetyshoes,longpants,anda
helmetisadvisableandrequiredbysomelocalsafetyand
insuranceregulations.
•Keepeveryone,especiallychildrenandpets,awayfrom
theareasofoperation.
•Beforeoperatingthemachine,alwayscheckallpartsof
themachineandanyattachments.Ifsomethingiswrong,
stopusingmachine.Makesuretheproblemiscorrected
beforemachineorattachmentisoperatedagain.
•Sincegasolineishighlyammable,handleitcarefully.
–Useanapprovedfuelcontainer.
–Donotremovethecapfromthefueltankwhenthe
engineishotorrunning.
–Donotsmokewhilehandlingfuel.
–Fillthefueltankoutdoorsandtoaboutoneinch
belowthetopoftank(bottomofllerneck).Donot
overll.
–Wipeupanyspilledfuel.
•Operatethemachineonlyoutdoorsorinawellventilated
area.
•Useonlyanapprovednonmetal,portablefuelcontainer.
Staticelectricdischargecanignitefuelvaporsina
ungroundedfuelcontainer.Removethefuelcontainer
fromthebedofthemachineandplaceitontheground
awayfromthemachinebeforelling.Keepthenozzle
incontactwiththecontainerwhilelling.Remove
equipmentfrommachinebedbeforelling.
•Checkthesafetyinterlocksystemdailyforproper
operation.Ifaswitchshouldmalfunction,replacethe
switchbeforeoperatingmachine.
WhileOperating
•Theoperatorandpassengershoulduseseatbeltsand
remainseatedwheneverthemachineisinmotion.The
operatorshouldkeepbothhandsonthesteeringwheel,
wheneverpossible,andthepassengershouldusethehand
holdsprovided.Keeparmsandlegswithinthemachine
bodyatalltimes.Nevercarrypassengersintheboxor
onattachments.Rememberyourpassengermaynotbe
expectingyoutobrakeorturnandmaynotbeready.
•Neveroverloadyourmachine.Thenameplate(located
underthemiddleofthedash)showstheloadlimitsfor
themachine.Neveroverllattachmentsorexceedthe
machinemaximumgrossmachineweight(GVW).
•Whenstartingtheengine:
–Sitonoperator’sseatandensurethattheparking
brakeisengaged.

–DisengagePTO(ifsoequipped)andreturnthehand
throttlelevertotheOffposition(ifsoequipped).
–MoveshiftlevertoNeutralandpressclutchpedal.
–Makesurethehydraulicliftleverisinthecenter
position.
–Ifengineiscold—pressandholdtheaccelerator
pedalabouthalfwaydownandpullthechokeknob
outtotheOnpositionwhilecrankingtheengine.
–Ifengineishot—pressandholdtheaccelerator
pedalabouthalfwaydownwhilecrankingtheengine.
–Ifengineisooded—fullypressacceleratorpedal
andholdittotheooruntiltheenginestarts.Never
pumptheacceleratorpedal.
•Usingthemachinedemandsattention.Failuretooperate
machinesafelymayresultinanaccident,tipoverofthe
machine,andseriousinjuryordeath.Drivecarefully.
Topreventtippingorlossofcontrol,takethefollowing
precautions:
–Useextremecaution,reducespeed,andmaintain
asafedistancearoundsandtraps,ditches,creeks,
ramps,anyunfamiliarareas,orotherhazards.
–Watchforholesorotherhiddenhazards.
–Usecautionwhenoperatingthemachineonasteep
slope.Normally,travelstraightupanddownslopes.
Reducespeedwhenmakingsharpturnsorwhen
turningonhillsides.Avoidturningonhillsides
wheneverpossible.
–Useextracautionwhenoperatingthemachineon
wetsurfaces,athigherspeeds,orwithafullload.
Stoppingtimewillincreasewithafullload.Shiftinto
alowergearbeforestartingupordownahill.
–Whenloadingthebed,distributetheloadevenly.Use
extracautioniftheloadexceedsthedimensionsof
themachine/bed.Operatethemachinewithextra
cautionwhenhandlingoff-centerloadsthatcannot
becentered.Keeploadsbalancedandsecureto
preventthemfromshifting.
–Avoidsuddenstopsandstarts.Donotgofrom
reversetoforwardorforwardtoreversewithoutrst
comingtoacompletestop.
–Donotattemptsharpturnsorabruptmaneuversor
otherunsafedrivingactionsthatmaycausealossof
machinecontrol.
–Donotpassanothermachinetravelinginthesame
directionatintersections,blindspots,oratother
dangerouslocations.
–Whendumping,donotletanyonestandbehind
machineanddonotdumptheloadonanyone’sfeet.
Releasethetailgatelatchesfromthesideofbox,not
frombehind.
–Keepallbystandersaway.Beforebackingup,lookto
therearandensurethatnooneisbehindthemachine.
Backupslowly.
–Watchoutfortrafcwhennearorcrossingroads.
Alwaysyieldtherightofwaytopedestriansandother
machines.Thismachineisnotdesignedforuseon
streetsorhighways.Alwayssignalyourturnsorstop
earlyenoughsootherpersonsknowwhatyouplanto
do.Obeyalltrafcrulesandregulations.
–Neveroperatethemachineinornearanareawhere
thereisdustorfumesintheairwhichareexplosive.
Theelectricalandexhaustsystemsofthemachinecan
producesparkscapableofignitingexplosivematerials.
–Alwayswatchoutforandavoidlowoverhangssuch
astreelimbs,doorjambs,overheadwalkways,etc.
Makesurethereisenoughroomoverheadtoeasily
clearthemachineandyourhead.
–Ifeverunsureaboutsafeoperation,stopworkand
askyoursupervisor.
•Donottouchengine,transaxle,mufer,ormufer
manifoldwhiletheengineisrunningorsoonafterithas
stoppedbecausetheseareasmaybehotenoughtocause
burns.
•Ifthemachineevervibratesabnormally,stopimmediately,
turntheengineoff,waitforallmotiontostopandinspect
fordamage.Repairalldamagebeforeresumingoperation.
•Beforegettingofftheseat,dothefollowing:
–Stopmovementofthemachine.
–Lowerthebed.
–Shuttheengineoffandwaitforallmovementtostop.
–Settheparkingbrake.
–Removethekeyfromignition.
Maintenance
•Beforeservicingormakingadjustmentstothemachine,
stoptheengine,settheparkingbrake,andremovethekey
fromignitiontopreventaccidentalstartingoftheengine.
•Neverworkunderaraisedbedwithoutplacingthebed
safetysupportonthefullyextendedcylinderrod.
•Makesureallhydrauliclineconnectorsaretight,andall
hydraulichosesandlinesareingoodconditionbefore
applyingpressuretothesystem.
•Keepyourbodyandhandsawayfrompinholeleaksor
nozzlesthatejecthydraulicuidunderhighpressure.
Usepaperorcardboard,nothands,tosearchfor
leaks.Hydraulicuidescapingunderpressurecanhave
sufcientforcetopenetrateskinanddoseriousdamage.
Ifuidisinjectedintotheskinitmustbesurgically
removedwithinafewhoursbyadoctorfamiliarwiththis
formofinjuryorgangrenemayresult.
•Beforedisconnectingorperforminganyworkonthe
hydraulicsystem,allpressureinthesystemmustbe
relievedbystoppingtheengine,cyclingthedumpvalve
fromraisetolowerand/orloweringboxandattachments.
Placetheremotehydraulicsleverintheoatposition.

Iftheboxmustbeinraisedposition,secureitwiththe
safetysupport.
•Tomakesuretheentiremachineisingoodcondition,
keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewsproperlytightened.
•Toreducethepotentialrehazard,keeptheenginearea
freeofexcessivegrease,grass,leaves,andaccumulation
ofdirt.
•Iftheenginemustberunningtoperformamaintenance
adjustment,keephands,feet,clothing,andanypartsof
thebodyawayfromtheengineandanymovingparts.
Keepeveryoneaway.
•Donotoverspeedtheenginebychangingthegovernor
settings.Themaximumenginespeedis3650RPM.To
ensuresafetyandaccuracy,haveanAuthorizedToro
Distributorcheckthemaximumenginespeedwitha
tachometer.
•Ifmajorrepairsareeverneededorassistanceisrequired,
contactanAuthorizedToroDistributor.
•Tobesureofoptimumperformanceandsafety,always
purchasegenuineTororeplacementpartsandaccessories.
Replacementpartsandaccessoriesmadebyother
manufacturerscouldbedangerous.Alteringthismachine
inanymannermayaffectthemachine’soperation,
performance,durabilityoritsusemayresultininjuryor

AcceleratorPedal
Theacceleratorpedal(Figure3)givestheoperatortheability
tovarytheengineandgroundspeedofthemachinewhen
thetransmissionisingear.Pressingthepedalincreasesthe
enginerpmandgroundspeed.Releasingthepedaldecreases
theenginerpmandgroundspeedofthemachine.

Theclutchpedal(Figure3)mustbefullypressedtodisengage
theclutchwhenstartingtheengineorshiftingtransmission
gears.Releasethepedalsmoothlywhenthetransmissionis
ingeartopreventunnecessarywearonthetransmissionand
otherrelatedparts.
Important:Donotridetheclutchpedalduring
operation.Theclutchpedalmustbefullyoutorthe
clutchwillslipcausingheatandwear.Neverhold
themachinestoppedonahillusingtheclutchpedal.
Damagetotheclutchmayoccur.
BrakePedal
Thebrakepedal(Figure3)isusedtoapplytheservicebrakes
tostoporslowmachine.
CAUTION
Wornormaladjustedbrakesmayresultinpersonal
injury.Ifthebrakepedaltravelstowithin3.8cm
(1-1/2inches)ofthemachineoorboard,the
brakesmustbeadjustedorrepaired.
GearShiftLever
Fullypresstheclutchpedalandmovetheshiftlever(Figure
5)intothedesiredgearselection.Adiagramoftheshift

damage.Shiftsmoothlytoavoidgrindinggears.
DifferentialLock
Thedifferentiallockallowsrearaxletobelockedfor
increasedtraction.Thedifferentiallock(Figure5)maybe
engagedwhenthemachineisinmotion.Movethelever
forwardandtotherighttoengagethelock.
Note:machinemotionplusaslightturnisrequiredto
engageordisengagedifferentiallock.
CAUTION
Turningwiththedifferentiallockoncanresult

HydraulicLift
Thehydraulicliftraisesandlowersbed.Moveitrearwardto
raisethebed,andforwardtolowerit(Figure5).
Important:Whenloweringthebed,holdtheleverin
theforwardpositionfor1or2secondsafterthebed
contactstheframetosecureitintheloweredposition.
Donotholdthehydraulicliftineithertheraiseorlower
position,formorethan5seconds,oncethecylinders

HydraulicLiftLock
Thehydraulicliftlocklockstheliftleversothehydraulic

High–LowRangeShifter
Thehigh–lowrangeshifteradds3additionalspeedsfor

grades,difcultterrain,heavyloads,slowspeedbuthigh
enginespeed(spraying).
Important:ThereisalocationbetweenHighandLow
inwhichthetransaxleisinneitherrange.Donotuse
thispositionasaneutralpositionbecausethemachine
couldmoveunexpectedlyiftheHigh–Lowshifteris
bumpedandthegearshiftleverisingear.
IgnitionSwitch
Usetheignitionswitch(Figure6)tostartandstopthe
engine.Ithas3positions:Off,Run,andStart.Rotatethekey
clockwisetotheStartpositiontoengagethestartermotor.
Releasethekeywhentheenginestarts.Thekeywillmove
automaticallytotheOnposition.Toshuttheengineoff,
rotatethekeycounterclockwisetotheOffposition.
