Programmable Monitoring
The G3 has an extensive monitoring system which is employed via the keypad. The information
given in the monitor displays is useful while troubleshooting or commissioning applications.
Key Display Description
MOTOR RUN DIRECTION:
FORWARD Indicates direction associated with speed reference. Keypad direction reference
is separate from terminal strip direction reference.

S3:-- S4:-- S5:-- As these input terminals are shorted to CC, the “--” will change to “ON”. Use

S6:-- S7:-- S8:-- As these input terminals are shorted to CC, the “--” will change to “ON”. Use
this as a troubleshooting tool. S6, S7, and S8 exist only on option card.
RCH:-- LOW:-- FLT:--
OUT:-- FAN:-- MC:ON As these output terminals close, the “--” will change to “ON”. Use this as a
troubleshooting tool. OUT exists only on option card. MC always says “ON”.
“FAN” shows “ON” when the drive’s muffin fan is on.
CUMULATIVE RUN TIME
0.00 .01 represents one hour. The timer is not resettable. An output contact can be
programmed to change state based on the CRT.

The following are the possible functions that can be assigned to the four programmable monitors

Programming
The following example will make the monitors one through four frequency reference, torque
current, peak input voltage, and peak output current respectively.

If you want the current values to be displayed as amps, change Current Units Selection in the
UTILITY PARAMETERS group to “1”. If you want the voltage values to be displayed in percent,
change Voltage Units Selection in the UTILITY PARAMETERS group to a “0”.

Setting of RR Input Special
Function Select Comments
1 With 10 volts on ‘RR’ terminal, this monitor shows FH. Effective FH is
displayed as ‘RR’ input is changed. Zero volts on ‘RR’ makes effective
FH 30 Hz.
2 Displays acc/dec multiplier. Zero volts on ‘RR’ results in a display of
“1.0”. Ten volts on ‘RR’ results in a display of “10.0”.
3 Displays effective voltage boost. Zero volts on the ‘RR’ terminal results
in a “0.0” display. At ten volts, Voltage Boost is displayed
4 Displays effective Stall Protection Current Level. Minimum is 10%. A
bug: If Current Units Selection in UTILITY PARAMETERS is set to
show current in amps, no units will be displayed with the value in this
monitor.

Binary Input
Introduction
Among the many types of speed reference the G3 can accept is a binary coding. The binary code is based
upon the value of the programmed value of the Maximum Output Frequency (MOF) in the UTILITY
PARAMETERS group. A maximum of seven bits is available to code for the desired speed (ten with the option
board). The speed reference is a sum of digits whose value is the MOF divided by a power of two.
The following example allows a frequency setting resolution of 1 Hz when MOF is 64 Hz. Six bits will be
used. The Reset function will not be available in this scenario. F-CC and ST-CC must be hardwired on the
terminal strip to run.
Terminals S1, S2, S3, S4, RES, and R are assigned the functions of binary bits 10 through 5 respectively.
Binary bits 10 through 5 have reference values of MOF/21, MOF/22, MOF/23, MOF/24, MOF/25, and MOF/26
respectively. In this example, these values are 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, and 1.

Notes:
Be careful to connect to “R” and not to “RR”.
You may want to set an unused terminal’s function to “42” (binary data write) to store the frequency
command in the drive’s RAM. The drive will keep running at the speed commanded when the binary
data write was given (i.e. the terminal was shorted to CC) even though the contact closures that coded
for the reference may change.This RAM-written reference is lost when the drive is powered down.

Pattern Run
Introduction
Like the G2/G2+, the G3 has a Pattern Run feature. Pattern Run allows the user to associate a time, direction,
accel/decel time, and volts/hertz pattern with each preset speed. Any seven of the fifteen preset speeds can be
strung together to create a pattern; the G3 stores four such patterns. The number of times a pattern repeats is
programmable from one to infinity.

The drive can store programming for four different pattern runs - each can be remotely run by
programming an input terminal’s function (TERMINAL SELECTION PARAMETERS group) with a
value of 14 (for Pattern Run #1), 15 (for Pattern Run #2), 16 (for Pattern Run #3), or 17 (for Pattern Run
#4).
With normal programming, when a STOP command is given (i.e. ‘F’-’CC’ or ‘R’-’CC’ is opened or
STOP is pressed on the keypad) and the RUN command is remade (i.e. ‘F’-’CC’ or ‘R’-’CC’ is remade or
the RUN button is pressed), the Pattern Run starts over with the first speed. If an input terminal’s function
is programmed to “Pattern Run continue signal” (see value 18 in Guideline 10, Input Terminals), and this
terminal is shorted to ‘CC’, the drive resumes the pattern run at the speed after the speed at which it was
running when the STOP was given. Note: opening and reclosing ‘ST’-’CC’ is not considered a
STOP/RUN command in this scenario; the pattern’s clock keeps ticking. The continue signal must be
active when the pattern is started for correct Continue operation.
Speed #0 in any pattern is only run on the initial pass of the pattern (repeats of pattern don’t include Speed
#0) Press the MON button during the run to see the special information displayed during Pattern Run.
* If Preset Speed Mode Activation is set to “0”, the drive ignores direction, accel/decel times, and V/Hz
programmed into Preset Speed n Operating Mode and looks for direction and/or ACC/DEC and/or V/Hz
from terminal strip.
** With this parameter set to “5” and an input terminal’s function set to “19” (“Pattern Run step signal” ;
see Guideline 10, Input Terminals), the drive steps through the pattern’s speeds every time a momentary
contact closure is made to ‘CC’. Any programmed speed time is ignored.
