1Safety precautions
• This section describes safety measures to prevent harm to users and other people, and damage to property.
• Understand the following indications and symbols before reading the rest of this manual, and follow the
instructions.
WARNING

WARNING
This indicates that failure to adhere to the
directions in the warnings could result in
serious bodily harm (*1) or loss of life if the
product is handled improperly.
The sign indicates a prohibited action. The
specific prohibited action is indicated by a
pictograph or warning text placed inside or next to
the symbol.
CAUTION
This indicates that failure to adhere to the
directions in the caution could result in
serious bodily injury (*2) or damage to
property (*3) if the product is handled
improperly.
This sign indicates a mandatory action, an
action that must be performed. The actual contents
of the instructions are indicated by a picture or text
placed inside or next to the symbol.
*1: Serious bodily harm indicates loss of eyesight, injury, burns, electric
shock, bone fracture, poisoning, and other injuries which leave after
effects and injuries which require hospitalization or long-term
treatment as an outpatient.
*2: Moderate injury indicates injury, burns, electric shock, and other
injuries which do not require hospitalization or long-term treatment
as an outpatient.
*3: Damage to property indicates damage extending to buildings,
household effects, domestic livestock, or pets.
The pictograph inside and nearby text indicates
additional information about cautions.

Installation requires specialised technical expertise.

2Description of terminology

Terminology Description
Group connection A method of connecting multiple indoor units, as 1 group, to the same remote controller.
Header/Follower
To use 2 remote controllers for 1 (1 group of) indoor unit, so that one of the remote
controllers is set as the “Header remote controller” and the other as the “Follower remote
controller”.
Header remote controller The one set as the “Header remote controller” can operate all the functions.
Follower remote controller
The one set as the “Follower remote controller” cannot operate some functions.
(For the functions that cannot be operated, refer to <Header/Follower (Settings required
to use 2 remote controllers to do operations)>. (Page 19))
Central control device A device that batch controls multiple air conditioners.

4About installation
Installation location and installation dimensions
• Install the remote controller at a height of 3′3″to 4′9″(1 to 1.5 m) from the floor in a location that seems to be the
average temperature of the room.
• Do not install the remote controller in a place where it will be exposed to direct sunlight or outside air (near a
window or the like).
• Do not install the remote controller behind obstacles or where it is blocked from air flowing in the room.
• The remote controller is not built to waterproof or humidity-proof specifications, so do not install it in a freezer or
refrigerator.
• Install the remote controller vertically on a wall, or the like.
Remote controller wiring and remote controller inter-unit wiring
The remote controller wiring (communication line) and AC208 - 240 V wires cannot make contact with each other
and cannot be put in the same conduits. It may cause problems in the control system due to noise or other factors.

■How to install on a wall
NOTE
• Avoid bundling the remote controller wiring with power wires or putting the wiring in the same metal conduits, which can
cause malfunctions.
• Install the remote controller away from sources that generate electronic noise.
1Insert a flat head screw driver or the like under the 2 hooks on the bottom of the bottom case (rear
case) of the remote controller to remove the bottom case.
2Use the supplied wood screws (2 pcs.) to secure the bottom case of the remote controller.
CAUTION
Do not use an electric screwdriver.
Be careful to not over-tighten the screws. (Torque up to 1.5 ft·lbs) The bottom case could break.
3Connect the wires from the indoor unit to the terminal block of the remote controller.
For connection, refer to <Connection diagram>. (Page 8)
CAUTION
Wire the remote controller after checking the connector numbers of the indoor unit to prevent miswiring. (Applying
AC208 - 240 V causes damage.)

CAUTION
Do not leave the excess remote controller wiring inside the remote controller case but instead bring it outside the case.
Peel off the sheath (outer skin) of wires inside the remote controller case. Excess wires may compress parts inside the
product and damage the remote controller body (including the LCD).

■Installing 2 remote controllers
1 or multiple units can be controlled by using 2 remote controllers. (Up to 2 remote control can be installed.)
NOTE
• Set one of the 2 installed remote controllers as the “Follower remote controller”. (They are set to “Header remote controller”
as the factory default setting.)
• If you are installing 2 remote controllers, one of which is a Wired remote controller (RBC-AWSU52-UL), set the Wired remote
controller (RBC-AWSU52-UL) as the “Header remote controller” and the other remote controller as the “Follower remote
controller”.
How to set follower remote controller
Set it in “Header/Follower” under “Initial setting” in “Menu”. (Page 19)

■For group connections
• When configuring a group connection consisting of indoor units of 4-way air discharge type (including compact
type) and indoor units of other type (including air to air heat exchanger), set the 4-way ceiling cassette type
indoor unit as the header. Otherwise, the “Individual louver” and some other settings cannot be performed.
• When configuring a group connection consisting of indoor units with auto grille function and other types of indoor
unit, set an indoor unit with auto grille function as the header. Otherwise, the “Auto grille” cannot be performed.
■First time use
When the unit is used for the first time, it takes a while for the remote controller to recognize operation input after
the power is turned on. This is not a malfunction.

It takes approximately 10 minutes until you can operate the remote controller.

■Air conditioner main screen
This screen is for confirming or changing settings that are used every day, such as temperature, operating mode,
air flow volume and wind direction.
You can check the current state according to the setting items on the bottom of the screen.
You can switch the setting items by pressing [ ] and [ ], and change them by pressing [ ] and [ ].
NOTE
• The temperature setting is changed in the main screen.
• Functions and items that cannot be set are not shown, according to the model.
• While changing settings, if you press [ Return] or if there are no button operations for about 60 seconds, the main screen
returns.
Switching between the detailed display and simple display
(air conditioner main screen only)
You can change the main screen to the simple display, depending on the “Display mode” setting. For switching
between the detailed display and the simple display, refer to <Display setting>. (Page 15)
The detailed display is set as the factory default setting.

standby.
While this is being displayed, the air to air heat exchanger
remains stopped.

6Initial setting
■1. Clock
You can set the year, month, date, and time.
NOTE
• Use the same procedure to change a “Clock” that has been set.
• The year, month, and date can be set from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2099.
• The clock display flashes if the clock data is lost, such as due to a blackout. If a blackout happens, the time is maintained
for about 3 days.
• The clock accuracy is an average monthly deviation of +/- 60 seconds.

■2. Name of room
(Set the name of the location that the remote controller is
installed)
You can set the name of the location that the remote controller is installed. (The air conditioner can be operated
even if this is not set.)
1In the “Initial setting” screen, press [ ]
and [ ] to select “Name of room”, and
then press [ Set/Fix]
2Set the name of the remote controller
You can input numbers and letters in screen (1).
Press [ ], [ ], [ ], and [ ] to move the
black highlight to the desired character, and then
press [ Set/Fix] to display the character at the top
of the screen.
Up to 16 one-byte characters can be entered for “Name
of room”.
When you want to delete a character, select “Del”, and
then press [ Set/Fix] to delete a character.
When you want to fix the name of the remote controller,
select “Fix” and press [ Set/Fix] to fix the name of
the remote controller.
Name is displayed here.

■4. Screen contrast
You can adjust the contrast of the LCD.
1In the “Initial setting” screen, press [ ]
and [ ] to select “Display setting”, and
then press [ Set/Fix]
2Press [ ] and [ ] to select an item
You can set the items that are black highlighted in the
display.
Press [ ] and [ ] to switch to the setting you
want.
3After setting each item, press [ Set/Fix]
The changes are fixed.
Clock selection
You can set the clock display in “Clock selection”. (Factory default setting: “24h”)
If you select “24h”, a 24-hour system is used (13:15, etc.), and if you select “AM, PM”, a 12-hour system is used
(01:15PM, etc.).
Clock display
You can delete the clock display in “Clock display”. (Factory default setting: “ON”)
Selecting “OFF” removes the clock display from the main screen.
Power level
By selecting “OFF” in “Power level”, you can set the main screen and “Monitor” screen to not display operating power
levels, or flags when set temperatures are met. (Factory default setting: “OFF”)
Display mode
Selecting “Simple” in “Display mode” changes the main screen to the simple display. (Factory default setting: “Detailed”)
For details about each screen, refer to <Air conditioner main screen>. (Page 12)

Select whether to enable lighting of the operating LED and the backlight of the LCD.

You can set the sound of button operations on the remote controller.

and [ ] to select “Light & LED”, and then
press [ Set/Fix]

want to change

■7. Key lock (Select operations to lock)
You can select operations to lock by using operation lock. (For operation lock, refer to the Owner’s Manual.)
• If you select “Lock” for “ALL”, then all operation items are locked, regardless of other item selections.
• Even if you select “Unlock” for “ALL”, the operation of “Wind direction” and [ Menu] are locked.
• If you select “Unlock” for “ALL”, then the operations for which “Lock” is selected in “Wind direction” and [ Menu], as well
as “ON/OFF”, “Set temp.”, “Mode”, and “Fan Speed”, are locked.

■8. Password setting
You can set an administrator password for functions of the “Schedule timer” and “Night operation”.
You can select “ON” or “OFF” the administrator password and change the administrator password.
NOTE
• You can individually set “ON” or “OFF” for the passwords for “Schedule timer” and “Night operation”. You can also set
different numbers for a password.
• All of the initial passwords are “OFF” and set to “1111”.
1In the “Initial setting” screen, press [ ]
and [ ] to select “Password setting”, and
then press [ Set/Fix]

If the password is set to “OFF”, do the procedure

When using 2 remote controllers, you need to set “Header remote controller” and “Follower remote controller”.

• When using 2 remote controllers, be sure to use the RBC-AWSU52-UL
as the “Header remote controller”.
• If you are using a pair of RBC-AWSU52-UL 1 can be used as the
“Follower remote controller”.
• The following settings cannot be done on a “Follower remote controller”.
“Schedule timer”, “On timer”, “Off timer”, “Off reminder timer”, “Night
operation”, “Energy saving operation”, “Return back”, and “Saving
operation”, “Power consumption”, “Reset Power Consumption data”
• When 2 remote controllers are used, the most recent operations are
enabled.
• They are set to “Header remote controller” as the factory default setting.
If “Header/Follower” is not done correctly, then the check code “E01”,
“E03”, or “E09” is displayed.
